The Rotary Club of Tortola was delighted to welcome Ms. Janice Nibbs Blyden and Ms. Bernadine Louis as our guest speakers to our weekly luncheon meeting on 13 August 2026. Together, they took members on an informative and memorable journey through the evolution of Festival in the Virgin Islands, sharing stories, experiences and reflections that highlighted the development of our Festival celebrations and the importance of preserving our Virgin Islands heritage.
With a colourful Festival float highlighting Rotary’s Areas of Focus, Rotarians took to the parade route to celebrate alongside residents and visitors while showcasing Rotary’s commitment to service and creating lasting impact in communities locally and around the world.
Three automated external defibrillators will be placed at the Road Town and West End Ferry Docks and the Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport, an initiative by the Rotary Club of Tortola. The initiative will also include training for staff at the receiving facilities to ensure the AEDs can be used effectively in an emergency.
Dr. Carolyn Betty delivered an insightful and thought-provoking presentation on “The Truth About Infertility,” at the Rotary Club of Tortola's weekly luncheon meeting on 23 July 2026. Her presentation helped raise awareness, dispel common misconceptions, and encourage greater understanding during Rotary's Maternal and Child Health Month.
The Rotary Club of Tortola donated $3,000 in supermarket vouchers to the BVI Family Support Network to assist mothers and children, senior citizens with special dietary needs, and other vulnerable individuals and families across the Virgin Islands. The donation was accepted by Executive Director Mrs. Prudence Charles-Phillip and Food Pantry Coordinator Ms. Sandra Mills, who shared that the support comes at a critical time, with the Network having assisted about 812 vulnerable individuals last year. President Mitsy Ellis-Simpson noted that part of Rotary’s work is assessing community needs and responding through meaningful service and partnership.
On a warm Saturday morning in Pasea Estate, Road Town, a group of Rotarians, family members, and friends gathered for the Rotary Club of Tortola's first HealthLine activity, a yoga and wellness session designed to promote healthy living, mindfulness, and fellowship. Participants arrived with yoga mats and open minds, embracing an opportunity to invest in their own wellbeing while also supporting Rotary's efforts to promote healthier communities. Guided by instructor April Tucker of Yoga BVI, attendees spent the morning learning breathing techniques, improving flexibility, and experiencing the benefits of mindful movement.

President Violet Gual of the Rotary Club of Tortola visited Alexandrina Maduro Primary School where she read with third-grade students and presented them with copies of The Wild Robot by Peter Brown. The Rotary Family of the British Virgin Islands, in partnership with the British Virgin Islands Health Services Authority (BVHSA), will host Matters of the Heart: Cardiovascular Symposium 2026, a community-focused health initiative addressing cardiovascular disease through education, prevention, and multidisciplinary collaboration.
The Rotary Club of Tortola, working in partnership with the British Virgin Islands Red Cross and the BVI Health Services Authority, has launched a joint public health initiative to address sexually transmitted diseases in the British Virgin Islands.
This initiative introduces a structured series of awareness campaigns, beginning with a focused effort on STD awareness and testing among men.
Through a collaborative approach to public health, the Rotary Club of Tortola, the British Virgin Islands Red Cross, and the BVI Health Services Authority have come together to launch a coordinated initiative aimed at strengthening education, prevention, and early detection of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in the British Virgin Islands. This initiative has been designed as a series of connected awareness campaigns, each addressing a key component of sexual health and informed decision-making. By rolling out the program in phases, the partners aim to build understanding over time, reduce stigma, and encourage responsible health practices across the community. The first phase of the series focuses on awareness, with particular attention on men. International public health data indicate that more than one million sexually transmitted infections are acquired globally each day, many of which remain undiagnosed due to the absence of symptoms. Delayed testing and low risk perception among men continue to contribute significantly to ongoing transmission worldwide. Locally, health partners in the British Virgin Islands have reported an increase in diagnosed STD cases, reinforcing the importance of early education and routine testing. Addressing men’s health at the outset of this initiative is intended to encourage proactive behaviour, support healthier relationships, and reduce the wider community impact of untreated infections.
As part of this initial campaign, the partners are delivering a coordinated public awareness effort across digital and community platforms to promote:
Greater understanding of sexual health and asymptomatic infections
Regular and confidential STD testing
Responsible personal decision-making
Community-wide disease prevention

Rotary and Health Partners Launch STD Awareness Series in the BVI
The Rotary Club of Tortola opened the new year celebrating Vocational Service Month and its 58th Charter Anniversary, reflecting on impactful service projects, renewed fellowship, and the relaunch of the Lose to Win Challenge in support of BVI Diabetes.
The Port Purcell Roundabout has been transformed into a vibrant holiday display crafted largely from recyclable materials. The project, conceptualized and led by Director Kelvin Liburd, aimed not only to beautify the space for Christmas but also to remind the community of the importance of environmental stewardship. The installation features illuminated decorations, repurposed items, and festive ornaments and was lit during a community gathering that drew residents and passersby. The initiative underscores creativity, sustainability, and the spirit of togetherness during the holiday season.
Every year we decorate the Port Purcell roundabout, but this year’s display stands out for its sustainable creativity and community collaboration. Director Kelvin introduced innovative elements, including transforming old plastic flower pots into large bells and installing a striking 16-foot illuminated gift box that symbolizes gratitude to the community. The hands-on support of the Rotarians brought the entire vision to life.
The Rotary Club of Tortola, through its Youth and Community Service Committees, recently completed a hands-on beautification project at Joyce Samuel Primary School, where Rotary youths spent the day painting benches and refreshing the school’s outdoor spaces to create a brighter, more welcoming environment for students.

The Rotary Club of Tortola will host its annual World Polio Day Awareness Walk tomorrow, Saturday, 25 October 2025, beginning at the Tortola Sports Club. Participants are encouraged to wear red or purchase the official Rotary End Polio Now event shirt, available on-site for $25. The walk supports Rotary’s mission to eradicate polio, which is now 99.9% complete thanks to global vaccination efforts. The public is invited to join, donate, and share using #EndPolioNow.
The Rotary Club of Tortola is closing in on the completion of the Roger Downing Mangrove Boardwalk at HLSCC’s Marine Campus in Paraquita Bay. With strong volunteer turnout and continued support from Unite BVI, the Club is focused on finishing the project before the end of 2025 restoring one of the Virgin Islands’ most meaningful environmental landmarks.

On Saturday, September 27th, 2025, the Rotary Club of Tortola joined forces with the BVI Red Cross, BVI Health Services Authority, and Digicel to host a successful Blood Donor Drive at Rite Way, Pasea. The BVI Rotary Family recently gathered for a memorable evening of service, dedication, and fellowship at its annual Rotary Foundation fundraising gala on November 2, 2024, at Maria's By the Sea. This year’s theme, "The Magic of Rotary," drew a full house of supporters, Rotarians, and distinguished guests, including District 7020 Governor Mrs. Dominique Bazin, who concluded her official visit to the Virgin Islands at the event.
The night was filled with laughter, inspiration, and camaraderie, featuring dancing, an auction, and raffles with luxurious prizes. One of the highlights was the presentation of Paul Harris Fellow awards to three outstanding community members whose lives embody Rotary's motto, "Service Above Self." Honorees Rosalia "Rose" Walters-Gardener, Vionne Pickering, and Rebecca Nockolds (in absentia) were recognized for their lifelong commitment to service and community upliftment.
November 1, 2024 –The Rotary Club of Tortola celebrated the unveiling of a Peace Pole during District 7020’s District Governor Dominique Bazin’s official visit to the Territory. The Peace Pole, prominently placed in the heart of the Road Town community, bears the message “May Peace Prevail on Earth” in multiple languages, symbolizing Rotary’s commitment to fostering peace and unity. This universal message ensures that all who pass by can reflect on the importance of Rotary’s mission of obtaining peace.
2024-25 District Governor Mrs Dominique Bazin and her husband, Rotarian Albert Bazin, have made their official visit to the British Virgin Islands. They will be staying in the Territory from October 28th to November 3rd, 2024. During their stay, District Governor Dominique will engage with members across the Territory which includes the four Rotary Clubs (Tortola, Road Town, Sunrise of Road Town, and Tortola Central), Rotaract Clubs (Tortola and Virgin Gorda), Interact and Earlyact.

The event highlighted Rotary’s global commitment to eradicating polio and raised crucial funds to support vaccination efforts around the world.
Members of the Rotary Club of Tortola gathered over the weekend of October 26-27, 2024, to paint the powerful “End Polio Now” logo on a prominent wall at Ridge Road, Tortola (above Josiah's Bay). This mural is a public statement supporting Rotary International’s mission to eradicate polio worldwide and raises awareness of the ongoing fight to protect communities, especially vulnerable small island nations, from this life-threatening virus.
The BVI Rotary family, in collaboration with the BVI Lions Club, hosted a special brunch celebration to honor the Honourable Dame Janice M. Pereira, who recently made history as the first Virgin Islander to be appointed to the Privy Council of the United Kingdom.
The Rotary Club of Tortola donated essential back to school supplies to three of its sponsored schools; St George's Primary. Alexandrina Maduro and the Joyce Samuel Primary School. Among the donated items included backpacks, pens, pencils, rulers, and Rotary-branded water bottles for forty students within each of the three school. This initiative aims to ensure that students are equipped with the basic tools they need to remain focused, active, and engaged in class, laying the foundation for a strong educational experience.
This past Sunday, the Rotary Club of Tortola (RCOT) launched its signature project for the 2024-2025 Rotary year at the Roger Downing Memorial Mangrove Boardwalk, located at the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC) Paraquita Bay Lagoon Marine Centre. Guided by HLSCC Mangrove Nursery team members, Nia Jeffers and Gian Jeffers, a group of dedicated Rotarians, Rotaractors, and friends came together to maintain and enhance the boardwalk area.
Volunteers pruned overgrown foliage, cleared decaying logs and branches that obstructed the 1,628-foot walkway, and swept away accumulated debris. They also collected litter washed into the surrounding mangrove root systems due to surface run-off, ensuring the boardwalk is safe, clean and accessible for all visitors. Additionally, the Chainsaw ‘Deep Water’ Crew, led by Marc Downing, worked on clearing the area where piles have already been laid for the upcoming boardwalk extension.
The Rotary Club of Tortola (RCT) celebrated its 2024 Installation Dinner at the elegantly decorated PRIME Restaurant, on June 29th where over 100 Rotarians, family, friends, government dignitaries, and community well-wishers gathered. The event welcomed the new board and celebrated the achievements of Immediate Past President (IPP) Kelvin Liburd and the outgoing board.
After weeks of hard work, the Rotary Floupe is finally ready to touch the road just in time for Festival 2023! We had Rotarians joining in to assist from the different clubs showing support and comradery; it was an amazing time to be a Rotarian!
One of the Rotary Club of Tortola’s key community service projects for the current Rotary year and ongoing project is its Anti-Litter Campaign. The environment, Rotary’s newest area of focus and the Club has decided to become more actively involved in environmental initiatives beyond the occasional clean ups and to do its part to assist in addressing the litter and waste management problems in the Virgin Islands.
Road Town, Tortola, 25 May, 2023 – The BVI Health Services Authority (BVIHSA) is pleased to announce the official handover of essential equipment donated by the Rotary Club of Tortola to the Dr. D. Orlando Smith Hospital's Laboratory. This significant contribution aims to enhance the services provided by the laboratory’s blood bank, ultimately improving patient care and safety.
Last year, the Rotary Club, in partnership with the BVIHSA and the BVI Red Cross, spearheaded a successful fundraising campaign, raising $45,000 to acquire the much-needed equipment. This commendable achievement was made possible through the generous support of both the local community and dedicated donors. Notably, a significant portion of the funds was generated through the participation of community members in the Grand Raffle that was held in September.
District 7020's District conference has officially come to a close. The event was held in St Croix from May 2-6 and was hosted by District Governor Deborah Howell of St. Croix from Rotary West. The governor’s theme for 2022-2023 was “Infinite Possibilities."
On Friday, March 17th, 2023, 36 students were made official members at the Alexandrina Maduro EarlyAct Club chartering ceremony.

On Sunday, 12th March, the Rotary Club of Tortola organized, for the second time, its Aquathon event. This year, the committee added a community fitness challenge, encouraging more community members to participate in the fun-filled fundraiser at Long Bay, Beef Island.

Wednesday 30th November 2022, Road Town, Tortola: The Rotary Club of Tortola (RCT) is pleased to announce its partnership with Unite BVI to restore the already complete portion of the Roger Downing Boardwalk (RDB) that was severely damaged during the 2017 hurricanes Irma and Maria.
No Limit Construction will carry out the works which should take a few weeks. Residents, school-age children and visitors will soon be able to once again have an Emerson's experience in the mangroves at Paraquita Bay and learn about mangroves, the types that exist within the area and how mangrove ecosystems are essential to the Virgin Islands.
On November 5th, 2022, the BVI Rotary family held their annual Rotary Foundation Dinner under the theme, “Shades of Rotary’. The grand affair which took place at Maria’s By the Sea, and coincided with District Governor for District 7020 Deborah Howell’s official visit to the Territory. Despite the inclement weather that evening, the dinner was well supported by Rotarians, family and friends who wished to celebrate and support the Rotary Foundation and the achievements of their loved ones.

During her their stay, they've met and interacted with the members of all four Rotary Clubs (Tortola, Road Town, Sunrise of Road Town and Tortola Central), Rotaract (Tortola and Virgin Gorda), Interact and Earlyact clubs within the Territory.
The Rotary Club of Tortola (the “Club”) is delighted to announce that as of last week, with funds raised from the community via its Grand Raffle which concluded in September and the support of generous donors, we have met the goal of $45,000.00 USD needed for the purchase of equipment for an expansion of Blood Bank Laboratory Services (the “Laboratory”) at BVI Health Services Authority (BVIHSA).
The Rotary Club of Tortola held its annual End Polio Now races in partnership with H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC) College Classic. At the event PP Micheal Killourhy shared some brief information about Polio and shortly after, runners took to the starting line and commenced the 2-mile race series.
At the closing event (29th October), the club grabbed its 16 consecutive victory. The race was sponsored by Mourant and Blu Water.
On World Polio Day, the Rotary Club of Tortola invited its sponsored schools to participate and raised awareness by asking them to dedicate the day to Purple Pinkie Day. Students were asked to wear the colour red. Children obtained permission from their parents and guardians and donated $1.00 to get their pinkies painted purple
In recent months, poliomyelitis, also known as polio, has been detected in places where it has not been seen in years. There were recent cases announced in New York, Malawi, and Mozambique. The virus was also detected within the sewerage system in the United Kingdom. With this alarming news, Rotarians worldwide remain vigilant and confident in Rotary International’s goal of achieving a polio-free world
Polio is a contagious and crippling disease affecting primarily children under five. It targets the muscles and nervous systems. It quickly spreads from person to person, often found in a person’s saliva and human waste. There is no cure, but the disease is preventable through safe and effective vaccination.
It is with heavy hearts that we share the sad news of the untimely passing of our beloved Past President Stephanie Benn. She was a stalwart public servant and Rotarian, full of energy with a warm engaging smile and personality. We will miss her immensely.
Today (October 20th, 2022), the elections committee for the Rotary Club of Tortola announced the incoming members for the Board of Directors (2023-24).
During September, the club launched its Readathon programme at the Alexandrina Maduro Primary School and the Joyce Samuel Primary School. The programme intended to encourage reading habits amongst themselves and their peers. To participate in the programme, the teachers hand-selected their reading warriors who would have been able to compete with the club’s deadline of September 23rd.

On October 1st, members of the Rotary club of Tortola took part in a harmonious activity filled with laughter and many surprises as members sang their hearts out in the club’s first Karaoke night. The event took place at Bamboushay Restaurant and Lounge in the heart of Road Town Tortola.

President Valerie and members of the Rotary Club of Tortola paid a visit to Green VI, a non profit organization that focuses on combating climate change through environmental improvements. One of their biggest goal is creating and maintaining a green, clean, healthy, and prosperous BVI.
Last Rotary year, three of the four Rotary Clubs, The Rotary Club of Tortola, The Rotary Club of Road Town and the Rotary Club of Sunrise of Road Town, joined forces and jointly raised funds to sponsor a well for the citizens in Haiti who do not have access to clean, safe potable water.
On August 11th, a cheque presentation of $25,000 was presented to PDG Delma, who also shares the role of the Engagement Chair of HANWASH. According to the HANWASH Facebook page, the money donated will assist the community of Karoline in Cavaillon, southern Haiti, where it is reported that citizens travel more than 1 kilometre to find water.
August 1st, the BVI Rotary family, which comprise four Rotary Clubs Rotary Club of Tortola. Road Town, Sunrise of Road Town and Central Tortola, returned to its tradition of leading a successfully executing a Float for the 2022 BVI’s Emancipation Parade!
It was an honor to receive the mantle of leadership of this illustrious Club a year ago as the Club’s 50th President. I stood before you, and detailed our strategic plan, goals and objectives for this year; and, I am happy to report that, despite the lingering challenges of COVID 19, we achieved the majority of our stated goals and objectives and improved camaraderie between members and membership engagement. I thank God, my Board, the members of our club, my family and friends for our varied outstanding accomplishments and for seeing us through this Rotary year.
Thanks to support from the Rotary Club of Tortola and other donors, the Youth Empowerment Project (YEP) will hold an 8-week summer program beginning July 5 for 150 children at the Road Town Multipurpose Complex. The Road Town “pop-up,” limited to this summer, is in addition to YEP’s regular summer program at its East End location, which is also set to welcome 150 children, thus doubling YEP’s reach and impact for the summer of 2022.

Everyone wants to hold the child but who holds the mother?
In an attempt to raise awareness about maternal mental health, also known as postpartum depression. The Rotary Club of Tortola invited Ms. Sade Fonseca who was a guest speaker at the Rotaract Club of Tortola, to highlight the issues and experiences she has experienced during her pregnancy and the various emotions she has undergone during her difficult time. The presentation by Ms. Fonseca was so inspirational that she was later to be invited as a guest speaker at the Rotary Club of Tortola.
In an attempt to assist Ms. Fonseca to raise awareness on the subject matter, members of the club, collaborated with the Rotaract Club of Tortola, by painting the town green on May 4th, which was maternal mental health day. The event followed the theme, " Journey to Recovery" which was a fitting theme to allow the general public to not scrutinize the illness but to embrace and reach out a helping hand to those in need.
The trend was caught on when members of the BVI family showed their support by wearing the colour.
Water is an important component in our daily lives. It covers over 70% of the Earth's surface but eliminate it from our body, we wouldn’t last three days.
Every year on March 22nd the UN recognized this day as World Water Day and the theme for this year is Groundwater: making the invisible, visible.
Groundwater is a vital resource that provides almost half of all drinking water worldwide, about 40% of water for irrigated agriculture and about 1/3 of water required for the industry.
It sustains ecosystems, maintains the baseflow of rivers and prevents land subsidence and seawater intrusion.
Groundwater is an important part of the climate change adaptation process and is often a solution for people without access to safe water.
Despite these impressive facts and figures, invisible groundwater is out of sight and out of mind for most people. Human activities (including population- and economic growth) and climate variability are rapidly increasing the pressure on groundwater resources: serious depletion and pollution problems are reported for many parts of the world.
A World Water Day on groundwater would put a spotlight on this invisible resource, enhance knowledge exchange and collaboration and thereby increase the awareness of the importance of taking care of our groundwater.
Today, Rotarians recognized World Down Syndrome Day. This event is commemorated annually on March 21st to raise awareness about Down Syndrome.
Down syndrome is caused by an extra partial (or full) copy of chromosome 21 in an individual. Although the cause of Down syndrome is unknown, it has always been a part of the human condition.
The theme for this year's World Down Syndrome Day is #InclusionMeans
It emphasises the need for worldwide awareness and discussion about Down Syndrome, which will enable people all across the world to campaign for full inclusion of people with Down syndrome and disabilities in society.
On March 19, 2022, 63 persons participated in a coastal cleanup campaign organized by the BVI Rotary Family. Together, the group collected more than 50 bags of waste including an old stove frame, car parts, condenser, large pieces of plastic etc.
The group covered a total of 6 Zones in the immediate area of Long Bay Beef Island as well as the entry to Mt Alma.
The month of March is known as Water Sanitation and Hygiene Month. We thought it was best to highlight water facts surrounding various issues. Members of the club enhanced their knowledge and we thought it would be great to educate others on the research information that we’ve found. Taking unwanted trash and turning them into functional lunch benches. The club replaced the old wooden benches at the Alexandra Maduro Primary School with benches made out of recycled plastic.
Fun fact: the plastic bottles seen in the photo was used to create a single 1X6 board that is 6” long.
It is unclear to some persons how our natural environment can impact our everyday lives and not realize how much of it we take advantage of its free services. This ranges from the air we breathe, the food we eat and the beaches we travel to for recreational activities. The enjoyment we get from our environment came to a stretching halt when Hurricane Irma, a category 5 hurricane swept through the Virgin Islands on September 6th 2017. The damages left from the hurricane gave the people of the Virgin Islands an urgent wake-up call as shortly after, another category 5 hurricane Maria came through causing strong storm surges and flooding within coastal communities.
The Minister of Natural Resources Labour and Immigration, Hon Vincent Wheatley made a plea of wanting to plant over 10,000 mangroves within the Virgin Islands and from this, Rotary joined in this mission to accomplish this task.
Wanting and achieving this project was two different components as we first had to understand and learn more about mangrove forests. The club partnered with the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College to learn more about mangroves and was introduced to their mangrove nursery programme. From there, we were able to learn how they propagate and care for the mangrove seedlings until they were healthy enough to withstand various environmental conditions.
Today, February 23 is Rotary’s Birthday. This day is also known as World Understanding and Peace Day.
On February 23, 1905, Paul Harris and his three friends started to meet in room 711 of the Unity Building in Chicago to discuss how to better the community and network with others. Rotary has come a long way, since then, but still manages to achieve goodwill, peace, and understanding among all people of the world.

On 14 August 201, Haiti was devastated by a magnitude 7.2 earthquake. Rotary Club of Tortola (RCT) President Ian S Smith immediately convened a small committee of members of RCT to formulate an action plan for immediate, effective and impactful relief and recovery efforts in Haiti.
Kirstie Palmer of the BVI Humane Society was yesterday’s guest speaker at the Rotary Club of Tortola weekly hybrid meeting. After her heartwarming presentation about the progress made by the Society and the roadblocks they are currently facing a plight was shared with members. On September 4, 2021, the Rotary Club of Tortola completed its first youth service project at the St. George's Primary School. Members of the club found an innovative way for students to learn and enhance their mathematics skills. This was done by turning their old stairway into multiplication stairs.
School resumes on September 6th 2021. As students enter their school campus this new stairway will help students visualize and be a constant reminder towards advancing their mathematics knowledge as they walk around campus.
August is the time of the year when we celebrate the heart of the club, its membership. Being in Rotary you learn about one another and develop deep connections with each other. We learn about people skillsets, cultural differences and their passion for service.
At this moment, there are over 1.2 million Rotarians in over 35,000 countries worldwide. Rotary International President Shekhar Mehta’s call for action is “Each One Bring One”, his goal for this Rotary Year is to increase the membership to 1.3 million by June 2022.
During the month, the Rotary Club Of Tortola took a fun initiative in highlighting and remembering its dynamic members by sharing their Rotary story. I am a Proud Rotarian profile was created to highlight the uniqueness of each member. In addition to this, the profiles aim to change the mindsets of others within the community, inspiring them to join the club and commit to “Serve to Change Lives”. BVI Rotary Family has once again come together in organizing relief and recovery assistance, this time to the persons impacted by the devastating 7.2 magnitude earthquake that struck Haiti. As an initial response, the BVI Rotary Clubs has a local Bank account to support this initiative. Experts both in Haiti and in Disaster response report that cash is the most effective and efficient way to aid those who are in need immediately. In grand style at the Sugar Mill Hotel on Saturday 19th June the Rotary Club of Tortola Installed Ian. S. Smith as President for the Rotary Year July 2021 – June 30th, 2022.

The Rotary Club of Tortola extended its wins in the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC) College Classic 2-mile Series to 15 following victory in a special edition race for service clubs sponsored by Mourant on Saturday, October 31, 2020.
The Club took an educational hike and explored one of the amazing trails on the Island of Tortola. During the tour, the Group was educated on VI history.
Rotary Club of Tortola was joined by Rotaractors and friends celebrating IPP Mike and President Dion. The Potluck style celebration had lots of food and drinks, games and nothing but fun and fellowship!!
The Club presented the first batch of IT Equipment to the Ivan Dawson Primary School Principal. In response to the Global COVID-19 pandemic, laptops were presented to assist staff and pupils in the Online Learning Program introduced by the Government's Department of Education for students while the Territory's schools remain closed.
The Government of the Virgin Islands locked down the BVI for 14 days to avoid the spread of COVID-19. Due to the lockdown, persons were unable to access food and other needed supplies. The Rotary Club of Tortola stepped in and assisted with the distribution of food and water to our elderlies and vulnerable persons within the BVI.
Members of the Rotary Club of Tortola, Rotaractors and Friends continue the refurbishment of the Queen Elizabeth II Park. The attendees enjoyed Saturday afternoons fun entitled "Paint and Sip".
ROTARY CLUB OF TORTOLA DONATES 50K TO IRIS O’NEAL MEDICAL CENTRE
Wednesday February 12 – The BVI Health Services are the recipients of a cheque for $50,000 dollars from the Rotary Club of Tortola to assist with the purchase of laboratory equipment to outfit the New Nurse Iris O’Neal Medical Centre.
The Commissioner of Police, Michael Matthews provided Rotarians, Rotaractors and Guests with an overview of the police achievements during the Year 2019 and a look ahead to the potential challenges of 2020.
His address during Vocational Service Month was very interesting.
The Club continues with the annual decorating and lighting of the Port Purcell Roundabout. The Sixth District Representative Hon. Alvera Maduro Caines was present to celebrate lighting of this center piece.
Members of the Rotary Family are deeply saddened by the passing of Founding/Charter Member of the Rotary Club of Tortola, Honorable Ralph T. O'Neal OBE. Honorable O'Neal passed away on 11 November 2019.
Service learning and leadership training helps youth develop deep understanding of the service combination with leadership skill building. The Rotary Club of Tortola participated in the Rotaract Youth Training Seminar because we strongly believe that through training, young people learn what it means to plan and execute projects that are impactful for the community and their development.
Run to End Polio attracted Rotarian and Rotaractors. Once again, the Rotary Club of Tortola partnered with the H Lavity Stoutt Community College to raise awareness and funds in the fight to end polio. Runners, walkers and onlookers donated to the cause by painting their pinkies purple.
Mr. Lionel Michael, Chief Environmental Health Officer in the Ministry of Health and Social Development, Environmental Health Division, addressed the members of Rotary and Guests at today, 17 October 2019, Rotary Meeting. Mr. Michael is responsible for the Administration and Management of the Environmental Health Services and Programs.
The Butterfly Storybook Project is a competition for young emerging writers in the Caribbean. It offers young people ages 7 to 11 an opportunity to showcase their talents for story writing.
The Rotary Club of Tortola launched the Butterfly Storybook Project at Seventh Day Adventist Primary School and Pelican Gate Primary Schools. The Project will be launched at the Club's adopted school in the coming days.

Rotarians in Action at the Hurricane Dorian Relief Telethon
Last evening (Tuesday 10th September, 2019) the Rotary Family of the BVI in an epic telethon raised approximately $145,000 to aid victims of Hurricane Dorian which struck some islands of the Bahamas last week as a Category 5 Hurricane.
Following an emergency meeting held today to coordinate disaster relief efforts, the Rotary Family of the BVI will be launching a major fundraiser to help victims of the catastrophic Hurricane Dorian which made landfall in the Bahamas yesterday. This will include a live telethon to be held on Tuesday, 10th September 2019.
The Rotary Family of the BVI led by the Rotary Club of Tortola connects with the people of the British Virgin Islands and all persons visiting for the Annual Emancipation Celebrations.
The Club continues to give back to the community and this year, the club distributed drinks, towels and candies to persons along the parade route.

What a shock and a loss! Big Brother loved Rotary and was always keen to get his annual 100% attendance. Until the last couple years he was ever present on our festival float, and in the early days dressed in drag for our annual Christmas concerts.

The Rotary Club of Tortola’s regular lunch meeting on Thursday, 6th September 2018 was not an ordinary meeting. Neither was it an ordinary day. Members from the entire BVI Rotary family consisting of Rotarians and Rotaracts gathered for a special lunch meeting at the Moorings Mariner Restaurant to commemorate the 1st anniversary of Hurricane Irma which left widespread destruction across the British Virgin Islands.
The BVI Rotary Family is gearing up for an exciting and historic visit by our Rotary International President Barry Rassin and First Lady Esther from August 9-11, 2018.
Public Image Director, Mitsy Ellis-Simpson of the Rotary Club of Tortola and team from the BVI Rotary family had the opportunity of giving the St. George’s Bus Shed in Road Town, a much needed refurbishing, cleaning and painting for the use and enjoyment by students of the St. George’s Primary and Secondary Schools and residents.
The Rotary club of Tortola in conjunction with Rotary club Sunrise Road Town and Rotary Club Road Town donated several boxes of clothes to the BVI Health Service Authority Mental Health Department. The exchange took place on the Festival grounds on Friday 13th July 2018.
Legislation to decriminalize cannabis in the British Virgin Islands is currently under review. Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Kim Hollis, QC was the guest speaker of the Rotary Club of Tortola's lunch meeting held on 12th July 2018 where she spoke on the popular topic. The BVI Government is currently exploring the herb for medical and recreation purposes and as a source of revenue for the country.
Over the weekend, Rotarians gathered at the Port Purcell roundabout to provide sweat equity in planting a small Christmas tree because Hurricane Irma had destroyed the community’s traditional Christmas Tree. Assistance to plant the tree was also provided by Groundworks.

Hurricane Irma has caused a serious situation for many residents in the British Virgin Islands. Significant damages to properties making no special selection! Unfortunately, among those suffered from the devastation are the elderly, disabled persons, low income homeowners, single mother and children who are in need of assistance.
Rotarians were among the many residents, organizations and Government officials that gathered to welcome and meet the Prince of Wales at the Queen Elizabeth II Park, Road Town, Tortola, yesterday afternoon, 18th November 2017.

Monica Ramjeet of Rotary Club Sunrise their mother that makes our club their father. Like father like son, taking cue from us their installation though not as large in numbers was just as grand. With their red, black, white and gold theme felt like we were at any grand banquet. Well Done! President Reshawn and all the best for this coming rotary year.

Rotarians Jeff Morgan and Michael Kilhourhy had the job of judging the Joyce Samuel Primary School's first ever Science Fair on 17th March 2017. The Rotary Club of Tortola has been supporting the School in conjunction with the law firm Ogier since "adopting" it in 2010 under the BVI adopted schools program. Joyce Samuel Primary School is the current BVI Primary School of the Year and its Principal, Orlandette Crabbe, was named Primary Principal of the Year in the BVI's Stars in Education Awards.
Rotary Club of Tortola recognizes that the load of responsibilities placed on the shoulders of women in our society is heavy. Women are every day heroes to their children, families and the society as a whole. Rotary women are indeed the backbone to our society and deserve our respect today and every day.

Rotarians, Rotaractors and Interactors worked on the playground and exterior of the Alexandrina Maduro Primary School. The Team painted the wall and benches and cleaned the entire surrounding of the School.
Members of the Rotary Club of Tortola began work on the Safe Haven. Additional work will be done to improve the physical structure of the home and the Rotary Club will also provide some much needed fixtures and fittings. The changes will help to improve on the living conditions at the Home.
The Peace & Arts Competition was launched on World Day of Peace to raise awareness and emphasize the importance of multicultural understanding, world peace and conflict resolution. The Competition was opened to students of Primary Schools and High Schools throughout the British Virgin Islands. Primary School entries were in the form of a poster board that depicts "What World Peace means to you." High School Students entries Grades 7 -9 was a written essay with 450 - 600 words on "Why conflict resolution is important" and Grades 10 -12 was a filmed video, 5 - 7 minutes long on "Multi-cultural awareness in the B.V.I.".

Rotarians, Rotaractors and Friends joined together to spread Joy, Peace and Love for the Holiday Season! It all started at the Adina Donovan Home for the Elderly and continued to the Peebles Hospital and Homes of Fellow Rotarians, their Family and Friends.
The Rotary Club of Tortola decorated the Round About at Purcell Estate, Tortola. The Club is responsible for the up keep of the Round About and takes pride in completing the Christmas Decoration annually.

President of the Rotary Club of Tortola, Mrs. Ingrid Moses-Scatliffe has vowed that the organization, under her leadership, will complete the Roger Downing Boardwalk at the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College.
The President noted that the project is a significant project which, although no completed in its entirety, it is utilized by both locals and visitors alike. The completion of the Boardwalk is one of the goals for this year as mentioned by President Ingrid at her Installation Dinner.

In observance of New Generation/Basic Education and Literacy Month, Retractors hosted the weekly meeting. District Rotaract Representative Elect, Director PP Jevaughn Rhymer was the Guest Speaker.
The Principals, some of Teachers and Students of the Alexandrina Maduro Primary School and Joyce Samuel Primary School participated in the Rotary Club of Tortola Luncheon on 15th September 2016. The Students expressed their appreciation to the Club through a poem presented by the students of the 5th Grade.
The refurbishment of the Sir Olva Georges Plaza is very near to completion. The fountain is now up and running and the plants have been treated and pruned. We are currently working with the Department of Environmental Health towards eliminating mosquito vector issues.
Members and Guests of the Rotary Club of Tortola listened as Mr. Lester Hyman, a Legal Practitioner and Member of the Board of Directors of the Hamilton Lavity Stoutt Community College Board spoke about Education, Tourism and Politics in the British Virgin Islands.
British Virgin Islander Actor, Mr. Sheldon Frett shares his plans with the a Rotary Club of Tortola. The actor who has made appearances in various movies, "Get On Up", "Red Band Society" and "Vincent and Roxy and Bound", intends to return home to start a Theatre Arts Program in the British Virgin Islands.
This year Rotary is celebrating 100 years of Rotary Foundation and to observe this event, the theme of our Floupe in the August Monday Parade was Foundation Centennial. The main area featured on the float was Basic Education and Literacy! Education empowers humanity. The other five areas represented were:-
1. Peace and Conflict Prevention
2. Disease Prevention and Treatment
3. Water and Sanitation
4. Maternal and Child Health, and
5. Economic and Community Development.
Rotarians, Rotaractors and Interactors came together to make the event a success. The Rotary Club of Tortola won First Place.
Work continues on the restoration of the Water Fountain and Gardens at the Sir Olva Georges Plaza. The project has been undertaken by the Rotary Club of Tortola on many occasions. Rotarians of the Rotary Club of Tortola have been working on restoring the broken fountain, cleaning the gardens and providing the plants with the much needed nutrients. Rotarian Tara confirmed that the Water Fountain should be up and running during the August Holidays. The necessary parts have been sourced and work will continue until the Sir Olva Georges Plaza is fully restored.
Rotarians, Rotaractors, Partners in Service and friends of Rotary saw the installation of Ingrid Moses-Scatliffe as President of the Rotary Club of Tortola at the Tortola Pier Park on 25th June 2015. President Moses-Scatliffe is the 4th female in the Club to hold the office of President in service to humanity.

At the annual district conference of Rotary Clubs in the Northern Caribbean, District 7020, BVI Assistant Governor Delma Maduro was confirmed as District Governor Elect for year 2018-2019. This year's annual district conference was held in Nassau, Bahamas from 3-7 May 2016.

On Saturday, 14th May 2016, the Rotary Club of Tortola held a food drive for the Family Support Network at several supermarkets in Road Town with an effort to assist the FSN in assisting families in need in the Territory.
The Rotary Club of Tortola goes Platinum for outstanding humanitarian and public image work for the 2015-2016 Rotary year. Announcement and awards were presented at the Rotary 7020 District Conference yesterday at the Atlantis Theatre, Paradise Island, Bahamas.
With about 60 businesses gathered at the Multi-purpose Sports Complex in Road Town, Tortola, the BVI Rotary Family was also on the scene in drawing awareness to Rotary, our causes and efforts in our communities and wider world.
Three students were sponsored by the Rotary Clubs of the BVI this year to attend Camp RYLA, the Rotary Youth Leadership Award program. Reanna Francois, Alondra Ephraim and Jessica Smith departed the Territory to attend the 5 day event from 20-24 April 2016 at the Florida Elks Youth Camp Inc.
The Rotary Club of Tortola raised over $210,000 in cash donation and auction sales for the 12th Annual Grand Affair Charity Dinner and Auction which was held at Deadman’s Beach, Peter Island Resort & Spa last Saturday under the theme “Escape to a Mediterranean Fantasy” with approximately 160 guests in attendance.
Under the theme “Escape to a Mediterranean Fantasy”, the Rotary Club of Tortola will present their 12th Annual Grand Affair Charity Dinner and Auction at Deadman’s Beach, Peter Island Resort & Spa on 9th April 2016. The event promises to be an exciting evening of entertainment and elegance for a worthy cause under the leadership of Past President Henry Creque, Director Mitsy Ellis-Simpson and President Elect (2017-2018) Karia Christopher, Co-Chairpersons of this year’s Grand Affair. The gala will be hosted by its customary patrons His Excellency - Governor John Duncan and Mrs. Duncan but at a fresh and stunning location.

The BVI Rotary Family had a wonderful family fun day on the Brewer’s Bay Beach on Sunday 6th March 2016. The event dubbed “Rotalympics” was an exciting and action packed fun day for the entire Rotary Family in the British Virgin Islands. Members, family and friends took part in various activities such as sack race, tug of war, relay, and wheel borough race, hot dog eating competition, dominoes and other activities.
The Rotary Club of Tortola had the pleasure of welcoming Ag. Principal Sandy Underhill and Guidance Counselor Bisa Smith of the Elmore Stoutt High School as guest speakers at the Club’s luncheon meeting last Thursday, 18th February 2016. The Principal spoke on the issues currently facing the school, peace remediation and her goals for achieving success at the High School.
Beautification of the Sir Olva George's Plaza is a very familiar project of the Rotary Club of Tortola which has beautified the Plaza a number of times for the benefit of residents and visitors to the Virgin Islands. This weekend Rotarians of the Rotary Club of Tortola have been working on restoring a broken Fountain at the Sir Olva George's Plaza. The Fountain which has been in existence for several years is well in need of a repair. Work involves identifying and correcting the exact parts that are not working. Work will continue in getting the Fountain running and other beautification of the Sir Olva George's Plaza.

In what was deemed a hugely successful fundraiser for the Rotary Club of Tortola, the Fun Car Rally held on Saturday, 21 November 2015 was nothing short of fun and excitement as patrons took part in various activities such as the car rally itself, hot dog eating competition, mixed drinks competition, dunk tank challenge, bouncy castle, bean bag race and other activities.
The 4th and final race of the 20th H. Lavity Stoutt Community College and Highland Spring College Classic ended with funny mustache painted faces all running in support of a great cause today. In the Service Club division, the Rotary Club of Tortola has once again captured the 1st place prize for the College Classic Series for the 11th consecutive win.

The next school reading session will be on 11th November 2015 with the the Joyce Samuels Primary School In September 2015, the Rotary Club of Tortola restarted this bi-weekly school reading programme following the commencement of the new school year.
In an ongoing project since September, the Rotary Club of Tortola has embarked on assisting the St. George's EarlyAct in refurbishing the St. George's Primary School playground.
The Rotary Club of Tortola marked World Polio Day on 24 October 2015 by teaming up with the organizers of the H. Lavity Stout College Classic Race Series, a series of 2 mile road running races, to co-sponsor that day’s race. During the lead up to the race, the Club worked to raise awareness of polio and the work that Rotary International has done for its eradication through local media reports and other publicity.
The Rotary family of the British Virgin Islands and the United States Virgin Islands celebrated our Annual Friendship Day on Saturday, 10th October 2015. This year’s event was hosted by the Rotary Clubs of the BVI at the Lambert Beach Resort on the island of Tortola. Approximately 70 persons from the Rotary Family visited from the islands of St. Croix, St. Thomas and St. John. A welcoming team of Rotarians from the Rotary Clubs of the BVI greeted and welcomed our visiting Rotary Family at the Terrence B. Lettsome International Airport, West End Ferry Terminal and the Road Town Ferry Dock.
In collaboration with the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College and Highland Spring Water, the Rotary Club of Tortola is encouraging residents and visitors to join our Rotary Club for an End Polio Race on 24th October 2015. The Race will be held at the College at 7 a.m.

The Rotary Club of Tortola and the entire BVI Rotary Family's annual dictionary distribution commenced today, 14th September 2015 in light of Rotary's Literacy and Education Month. Today, a team of Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Tortola visited six primary schools across the country and distributed over 250 Oxford dictionaries to our children. Each 4th grader received a dictionary as a gift from the Rotary Club of Tortola.
On 2nd September 2015, the Rotary Club of Tortola and four other Rotary and Rotaract Clubs in the British Virgin Islands signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Government of the British Virgin Islands solidifying the working relationship between the Rotary family n the British Virgin Islands and the Department of Disaster Management.
The Rotary Clubs in the British Virgin Islands respond to Tropical Storm Erika which strikes a deadly blow to Dominica killing at least 30 persons with several more persons missing.

The Rotary Club of Tortola on 23rd July 2015 handed over a check for $1,000 to the HIV/AIDS Foundation to assist with their new initiative known as “KNOW YOUR STATUS, GET TESTED”. The HIV/AIDS Foundation is committed to the prevention of HIV transmission through sexual health education programs and advocacy for people living with HIV to access quality health care and privacy.
The Rotary Club of Tortola, in July, donated $1,500 to assist with a much needed surgical operation for 11 year old T’Shonda Dore who suffers from Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis.
The Rotary Club of Tortola organized a successful service project in painting the entire exterior of the British Virgin Islands Red Cross building which was completed this month.

The Rotary Club of Tortola Youth Forum of Peace and Conflict Resolution at the New Testament of Hope Church, Virgin Gorda were packed with students from the two secondary schools of Virgin Gorda and Anegada as they participated in the second leg of the 2014 Youth Forum on October 3rd.
Today the Rotary Club of Tortola hosted a first for the BVI, our Inaugural Youth Peace & Conflict Resolution Forum for Secondary School Students in Grade 7-9. Panelists included students who spoke on Peace & Conflict Resolution, Self Esteem, Bullying, Respect and Peer Pressure. Over 1200 students attended and participated fully the panel discussion and question and answer segments.
Not afraid to get our hands dirty once it is the community or the environment. Congratulations to the Rotaract Club of Tortola for their great initiative and thanks to the support of the Rotary Family.

Today we got to make a difference in the learning experience of a little angel. Cheniqua George has been having difficulty with reading because of problems with her vision. The Rotaract Club of Virgin Gorda was contacted by her teacher, Ms. Beryl Vanterpool to assist with the purchase of Cheniqua's special glasses. With the help of the Rotary family of the BVI and in the spirit of World Literacy Day and New Generations Month, today we presented Cheniqua with her glasses!
We continue to be very proud of the work of our Rotaract Club of Tortola and the work they are doing in the community. Well done!

Today with the tremendous support of the BVI community during our food drive last weekend, we officially handed over three truck loads of food and non perishable items to the Family Support Network and Social Development. This was made possible by the kindness and compassion of the people in the BVI who donated whatever they could from a can of peas, to a dollar or a 100 dollars. We thank you all.

It was heart warming to experience the overwhelming support received from the most kind and giving souls of the BVI during our food drive yesterday. Rotarians came together to ask for support for the Family Support Network and Social Development Department as we help those organizations to provide for needy families in the BVI.

A gala event attended by Premier Hon. Dr. D. Orlando Smith, Opposition Leader Hon. Ralph T. O'Neal and Rotary District 7020 Governor Mr. Jeremy Hurst, ushered in the first ever Rotarct Club on Virgin Gorda Saturday, February 1.

The playground slides at the Joyce Samuel Primary School in Bellevue and the Alexandrina Maduro Primary School in Baughers Bay had seen better days. Both slides were damaged and rendered unusable for quite some time. The Rotary Club of Tortola has now installed new slides at both schools. The new slides were installed by Rotarians on a Saturday morning late last year. Shortly the Club will be replacing the turf at both playgrounds and repairing the swings.
The Rotary Club of Tortola and the Rotary Club of Les Cayes in Haiti have partnered to bring clean water to the community of Boulmier in Haiti. A well was dug and a private bathing area constructed as part of this water project. Six different communities were helped as a result of this project.
The Rotary Club of Tortola was very busy this past weekend as the club completed a number of hands on community projects. On Saturday morning a few members of the Club were joined by representatives from Digicel and Ogiers to install seven (7) new computers in the classrooms at the Joyce Samuel Primary School. These computers will replace a number of non-functioning machines and will serve as invaluable learning aid to teachers and students alike. Mrs Orlandette Crabbe, principal of the school, was grateful to receive the computers and thanked the Rotary Club of Tortola and its partners for their kind contribution. The computers were donated through financial support from Digicel and Ogier and the project was spear headed by Rotarian Ehab Tarabay.
For most of his life, 20 yr. old Delroy Gordon was unable to effectively communicate with the outside world but today thanks to the support of many in the BVI Community and his own determination to succeed he is enrolled at Gallaudet University in Washington DC where he is studying English as a first language.
The 15th Annual Premier’s Cup came to a conclusion on Sunday July 14th, with Team Antigua emerging as the overall victors.
The youth teams raced J-24 sail boats around a course south of Tortola and were based on the property of the Nanny Cay Resort and Marina. The teams camped around the resort property and enjoyed the many opportunities for fun and fellowship between the 10 participating teams from around the Caribbean.
The regatta was one of the initiatives of the Kids and the Sea Programmed (KATS), which as usual was very well supported by members of all three BVI Rotary Clubs and the Rotaract Club of Tortola.

For the first time in three years it was the Club's very own installation Dinner, except we had an interloper but how could we not!
The mantle of responsibility passed not only to our new President and his Board but also to the new Assistant District Governor, our own PP Delma Maduro who became the Territory's first female Assistant District Governor, our own PADG Ron Potter had the honour to install PP Delma to her new role. We wish her all the best, and respect her diligence and commitment to her new position, well done Delma.

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – In retrospect, charter members of the Rotary club of Tortola discovered that one of their biggest debated challenges was whether or not women should have been allowed to join the club. The affirmative would prevail, however, and Ms. Delma Maduro became the first woman to serve in the capacity of president.
ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - It was a night of fond memories and reflection as the Rotary Club of Tortola sought to honour its founder members as part of its 45th Anniversary. Out of the founding group of twenty members, the ceremony was graced with the presence of three, Rotarian Ralph T. O'Neal OBE, Dr. Robin Tattersall and Mr. Micheal Helm.

The Rotary Club of Tortola emerged as the champions, in the service club category, of the Highland Springs HLSCC 2 Mile series. The victory was the club's eighth straight. Congratulations are also extended to the other Rotary and Rotaract Clubs for a fun and competitive series, and also to all the participants in this year's races.
The Rotary Club of Tortola recently handed over a check in the amount of $5,000.00 to MAKOS Swim Club a community volunteer organisation offering opportunities for those interested in competitive swimming and representing the Virgin Islands locally and abroad.
BVI Rotarians rallied around plans for Rotary International 7020 District Conference 2013 (RDC 2013) on Thursday at a joint meeting of the three Rotary Clubs. Enthusiasm was high as approximately 120 Rotarians participated and heard more of the plans for RDC 2013, and were encouraged to lead the way as the BVI hosts its first Rotary District Conference.
Defending service club champs RCT resumed their winning ways at the College Race series September 29th.
The club, who was led (albeit from the back) by Captain President Sam, faced stiff competition from the Rotary Club of Road Town, Rotary Club Sunrise of Road Town and Rotaract Club of Tortola.
Class three students from across the Territory have benefited from an annual donation of Oxford Dictionaries from the Rotary family of the BVI, according to the Government Information Service (GIS).
The entire BVI community can look forward to the upcoming Rotary International District 7020 Conference which is expected to attract hundreds of Rotarians from across the region to the shores of the British Virgin Islands in May 2013.

Big winds and a big team helped Anguilla retain the title at the 14th annual Premier’s Cup last weekend. Anguilla finished the weekend with 25 points to run away with the Premier’s Cup by a wide margin topping the other seven teams.

At a recent luncheon meeting the Rotary Club of Tortola presented a cheque in the amount of $2,300.00 to Dr. Ronald McAnaney, Chairman of the HIV-AIDS Foundation. This cheque will serve to sponsor one person to attend the 2011 Caribbean HIV Conference, to be held from November 18-21 in Nassau, Bahamas under theme: “Strengthening Evidence To Achieve Sustainable Action”
The Youth Empowerment Project (YEP) received $20,000.00 to purchase new computers and to aid in the completion of sporting facilities. $15,000.00 has been spent on computers (see photo), and $5,000.00 is going towards the Multi Purpose Sports facilities. The facility's basket ball court is currently under construction.

For the first time in the 43-Years History of Rotary in the British Virgin Islands we have been able to award a one year Ambassadorial Scholarship which was donated to our District from District 6960 (Florida). The proud recipient is Rotaractor Tashima Barzey, who joined the Rotaract Club of Tortola on 12th September 2003. Tashima will be studying Emergency Medical/Paramedics. Invited by Radio/ TV personality Cromwell Smith aka Enju En Ka, Rotarian Henry Creque of the Rotary Club of Tortola gave the new fundraiser "Jail & Bail" a great jump start. He explained that the idea is to arrest 6 notable Citizens of the British Virgin Islands for the good things they have done here. They are taken in front of His Worship Justice Gerard Farara, QC, who will listen to the bailiff reading out all the good deeds they have done and the Judge will request $2,000.00 bail for each of them, to enable them to continue their great work. As soon as their friends and supporters pledged enough to reach $2,000.00 the "jailbird" will be released.
Thursday, June 30th, 2011 – Again, the Rotary Club of Tortola made good on its promise to support the various youth programs in the territory.President of the Club, Lorna Smith, presented a check for $10,000 to the Hoop it Up Foundation.

Wenzke) Kicked off in September 2004 on the initiative of Past Rotary President Elton Georges, the Rotary Club of Tortola recently held its 7th annual Slim-a-thon, better known as "Lose to win". The idea is that Rotarians and non-Rotarians, who are signing up are weighed around September and pledge to lose a certain amount of pounds in about 12-14 weeks. They are going to their friends and associates with forms, collecting pledges as how much the person is willing to give for each pound lost. After the last weighing the pledges are calculated and collected. What ever is collected by the "losers" is matched by the Rotary Club and then donated to the BVI Diabetes Association. Over the past seven years close to $50,000.00 have been donated, with the most recent cheque last week in the amount of $10,486.70.
(by Astrid C. Wenzke) June 14th was a special day for the Rotary movement of the BVI. For the first time in the 43 years Rotary History of the BVI all local Clubs received Presidential Citations. The presentation was made during a joint meeting hosted by the Rotary Club of Road Town at The Mooring Mariner Inn Restaurant together with Rotary District Governor Diana White, PHF, who calls St. Thomas home. DG Diana is no stranger to us in the BVI, since she and her husband Roger lived here from 1979-1986, when Roger was the Manager for the then Barclays Bank and a member of the Rotary Club of Tortola. Presidential Citations were given out very selectively by Rotary International President 2010-11 Ray Klinginsmith. The Awards read: "Presented to .... for demonstrating Rotary's commitment to fellowship and service".

On 4th July the Rotary Club of Tortola installed Lou Schwartz as a new Rotarian. Since then to the 30th of January the Rotary Club of Tortola has installed 13 new members to the Club of those, two are transfers from other Clubs and three are welcomed back into the fold.

The Rotary Club of Tortola in partnership with the Department of Education conducted a workshop to train approximately 90 teachers from public and private daycares, pre schools and primary schools within the territory from April 4-6, 2011. The 3-day workshop was facilitated by Kerri-Ann de Castro, MS CCC-SLP and Melanie Okadigwe, MS ED of Therapy Servicesâ€"the BVI's leading rehabilitation centre. The main objective of the workshop was to increase the academic achievement of children with special needs in mainstream classrooms by providing professional development training for early education teachers.
After attending the workshop the teachers would be more equipped to:
1. Effectively observe children in their classrooms who may have special needs
2. Identify children with learning disabilities in their classes, and refer children to receive early intervention services
3. Use strategies to teach children with special needs
4. Use strategies to decrease undesired behaviours in the classroom
On Mar 5th 2011, Lead by Dion Stoutt, members of the Rotary Club of Tortola continued cleanup and maintenance of the mangrove boardwalk at Paraquita Bay.
A large number of Rotarians including a past and incoming president were on site to lend their helping hand to this event.
We broke ground on the new Good Samaritan School in June 2010 during my first visit to Haiti with Michael Beans (newly appointed Tortola Club PHF). The Project Engineer spoke of an eight week construction period, which at the time nearly gave me a "heart attack" as we had not got all the funds in place! At the time we had perhaps $60 to $70K in the pot, about half of that needed. I must admit that I thought the proposed contract period a little ambitious bearing in mind the logistical difficulties of transporting materials in dug-out canoes several miles from the mainland, then moving the materials about a mile or so from the beach to the job site either in donkeys saddlebags or carried by people. Whilst in the village I had been persuaded to sponsor the local football teams strip in exchange for a commitment that the team members would help transport materials to site, hopefully this will have been remembered.
Site commencement was delayed by several weeks until the Contractor could mobilise, then the autumn brought the Caribbean severe weather in terms of hurricanes and rain, followed in Haiti by Cholera from which several people on the Island have sadly died. As the island has no proper roads, materials movement stopped until the mud had dried out because of fear of braking the animals legs. Additionally an unforeseen challenge was getting delivery truck access to the dock in Les Cayes, which has been overworked with incoming aid, presumably because the Port au Prince dock was out of action following the Earthquake.
Rotarian Kert and I have been managing the project stage payment schedule where we have to forward fund the job, however try not to expose ourselves to too much up-front financial exposure, until the work catches up. Our $20K stage payment made by Treasurer Julien in November hit the rocks, when the Haiti Bank changed their Intermediary Bank without telling anyone, and even with the direct help of Director Joyce, it took some two months to get the payment into the hands of the Contractor. This plus the Christmas holiday resulted in the work on site stopping until the funds could be delivered and work re commenced.
On Jan 11th 2011 a club runner training session for club directors was hosted by Rotarians Henry Creque and Dion Stoutt at Director Joyce's conference room. This training session which was well attended and received gave a detail and simplistic overview of the use and importance of Club runner. Directors were given the synopsis of logging in to Club runner, editing their profile, navigating through the website, composing an email and how to edit events.
His Excellency the Governor Boyd McCleary announced today that Mrs. Lorna Smith has been recognised as an Officer of the [Order of the] British Empire (OBE) for services to the Government of the British Virgin Islands and Mr. Charles Tobias, a Member of the British Empire (MBE) for services to the Royal Navy and to the community of the British Virgin Islands.
Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II made the appointments as part of her New Year's Honours List which was released in London today.

Director Stephen advised that well-needed sponsorship for teachers' salaries for the Good Samaritan School Project in Haiti, was received. He successfully negotiated with the A. Foundation resulting in a $15,000 per annum donation for three years for teacher's salaries.
Rotarian Robin is back and accomplished a feat that no other member of our club has- be over 80 years old, particpated in a 26 mile marathon to raise funds for cancer awarento help fight against cancer.

PP Tom Gerker wrote a masterful letter to DG Diana White about the history and importance of our Premier's Cup International Youth Regatta that we've hosted for the past twelve years. His intent was to encourage DG Diana to invite other District 7020 clubs to send teams in 2011. DG Diana agreed and is taking the letter on her visits to clubs in other countries, the next being Jamaica. The letter follows:

On Sunday, September 5, 2010 world renowned motivational speaker and author, Lisa Nichols created an emotional 'safe space' for over 400 of BVI teens to better understand themselves, articulate their dreams and to start to claim these. The event took place at the Learning Resource Centre of HLSCC with a number of parents, relatives and friends also in attendance to support the teens.
District Governor Diana White represented the power of one, giving a stirring address to the Rotary Club of Tortola. DG Diana makes history as the first female governor of Rotary District 7020, and when she was done addressing the club, one could not help but want to get up, go out and find that thing, that one thing, that made a difference. The power of one and high ethical standards, she said, are the basis for creating positive change in our businesses and communites. DG Diana underscored the value of our service, pointing out that while monetary contributions are important, it is integrity that makes Rotarians stand out.
The chair seats a prominent official of today. Now Senior Inactive Rotarian, Premier Ralph O'neal, helped entertain our darling club back in the day, whilst the other two actors debuted in this Rotary Club of Tortola staged play.
New Generations Director Mary Finley Jones, who is also past president of the club is first to fill the role first envisioned by our Rotary International (RI) President. This fifth addition to the avenues of service gives focus to the personal and professional development of the youth of the RI family.
Great fellowship, wonderful sportsmanship, good weather, no incidents, loads of fun and a win for the third straight year for Team St. Thomas, at the end of the 2010 Premier's Cup International Youth Regatta held at the Nanny Cay Resort on Tortola, British Virgin Islands(BVI).
Ms. Karrian DeCastro , master in speech pathology, celebrated with her profession in "Better Speech and Hearing Month" this May. Advocating for persons with disability and autism, she stated that sensitivity to the physiological and psychological struggles faced by these persons, is needed.
Addressing the Rotary Club of Tortola at its luncheon meeting on March 25, Mr. David Johnson spoke of a defining moment in his life, which focused him on the importance of "quality moments passed".Since suffering a broken neck in a swimming pool in 1978, wisdom, workers, and wealth, are core beliefs and motivations of his.There is enough to go around he says.
Past President Tom stated that a 'Kids in the Sea' programme, which was conceived 20 years ago, will finally be launched this Saturday, March 27, 2010. Children with basic swimming skills between 9 and 15 are being targeted where they will be trained to manouevre in open waters.
When moral is low and support is waning, who wants to be lectured on the importance of having priorities ordered, such as being able to read, write, or to excel in school? So, President Leroy did what was only right in extending a warm club welcome to our adopted school, the BVI Technical & Vocational Institute.
He encouraged them by stating that their environment and circumstances need not determine who they become, as he too had humble beginnings but can now attest to success derived from keeping focused.
Our very own past president (PP) Stanley Gordon addressed the club on Prostate Cancer Screening. He stated that the Rotary Clubs of Tortola would host a prostate cancer screening event during the first week of May 2010. For this event, doctors from the United States would visit the BVI and work closely with Rotary to co-ordinate the screenings.
A little wine, champagne and apple cidar was for the hoorahs following the Virgin Affair. With the club raising approximately $125,000.00 from the Virgin Affair, president Leroy toasted its co-chairs president elect(PE) Lorna Smith and past president Gerry Farara for the excellent turnout of the event. This was on the heels of the haiti appeal, which of itself raised over $200,000, as pointed out by President Leroy. Hence, raising additional thousands at the Virgin Affair was a tall order, and having done so, was an exceptional feat.
The Rotary Club of Tortola raised $128,000 at its annual fund raiser dubbed this year as the Virgin Affair dinner and auction held for the first time in Virgin Gorda on Saturday, February 27, at Bitter End, Tradewinds Restaurant.
In a combined clubs meeting called by president Melvin of the Rotary Club of Road Town,marking the 105th anniversary of Rotary International, the Road Town club awarded Paul Harris Fellow status to Ernest Scatliffe.
ADG Vance Lewis, the chairman for the Haiti Relief Efforts of the Rotary Clubs of the BVI announced in the joint meeting marking the 105th anniversary of Rotary, that the first remittance of funds raised for Haiti , will be sent. The amount to be sent is seventy-five ($75,000.00).
Sherri Ortiz, executive director of the BVI International Financial Centre (IFC) imbued Rotarians with a new respect for the work of the BVI Government in respect of establishing a sense of security primarily with our bilateral trading partners and member countries to the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). This is done through the IFC's efforts in negotiating and coordinating Tax Information Exchange Agreements (TIEA's) on behalf of the BVI Government.
The Rotary family of the BVI, with overwhelming support from the BVI community, has so far raised over $225,000 in pledges for Haiti earthquake victims.

A fun day and concert to raise funds for the Rotary Club of Tortola's Haiti School Project is well underway as the organizers prepare to entertain residents and visitors on Virgin Gorda at a Pirate Show to be held at Leverick Bay on Tuesday, November 24th.

Rotarians displayed their block-laying and mortar-mixing prowess on Saturday, March 7 as the Club continued its efforts to beautify the Port Purcell Round-about.
In February the Club received word from Haiti that all five of its 400-gallon water storage tanks have been installed and are providing drinking water for the Good Samaritan School in La Hatte, Haiti.

On Saturday, February 7 the Rotary Club of Tortola began a project to beautify the round-about at Port Purcell. A backhoe began by digging a footing for the new stone wall that will be built to surround the roundabout. Later, new landscaping will be installed.

Five water tanks purchased by the Rotary Club of Tortola for the Haitian community school of Ile Vache have been installed, greatly increasing the amount of clean water available to children at the school.

November is Rotary Foundation Month, and Rotary International President DK Lee dedicated his monthly message to the topic. His words follow:
The mission of The Rotary Foundation is to enable Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education, and the alleviation of poverty.
The Rotary Club of Tortola is helping the BVI Airports Authority test its readiness for a major incident at the Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport.
During its luncheon meeting on October 23, club members elected the 2009-2010 Board. Rtn. Nigel Bailey, presently Vice President, was elected as President Elect for the 2010-2011 Rotary Year.
The Rotary Club of Tortola is running to victory in the annual HLSCC College Classic Running Series. The club has bested the Rotary Club of Road Town in the first three of the five-event running series.
The rave reviews are still pouring in for the first-ever local Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) training held Sept. 27-28 on Tortola. The event was spearheaded by PP Mary Finley-Jones.

The Rotary Club of Tortola has committed $75,000 to aid life-saving causes in the BVI. President Percy announced on Thursday, September 25, that the funds, which were raised earlier this year at the club's Grand Affair auction, would go to combat diabetes, HIV/AIDS, and cancer.
The Rotary Club of Tortola received a special visitor at its weekly luncheon meeting on September 11: the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force's new dog, specially trained in detecting narcotics. "Ciro" and her handler, Detective Brian Penn, gave Rotarians a demonstration of their capabilities during the meeting.
A four-member Group Study Exchange team from the BVI is preparing to depart for Virginia on September 25. The delegation is being led by Rotary Club of Road Town member Yvonne Crabbe.
The Sunshine Division of the Rotary Leadership Institute is offering training on Tortola for the first time. The sessions, which take place on Saturday, September 27 and Sunday, September 28, are an excellent opportunity for BVI Rotarians.
Sporting bright new paint and a new design, the Rotary Float made a splash in the annual August Monday Festival Parade. Rotarians, Rotaractors, Interactors, and family members rode on the float, which was painted bright yellow and blue and carried the Rotary theme: Make Dreams Real.

The beginning of the Rotary year is always an exciting time, with new club and district officers, a new theme to work with, and a renewed sense of purpose for our service projects. The beginning of this particular Rotary year is, of course, especially exciting for me as I look forward to meeting Rotarians throughout the world and seeing firsthand the many remarkable projects you are carrying out.

As a global food crisis sent shockwaves around the world earlier this year, a Bahamian district governor used contacts from the 2007 International Assembly to help his Caribbean neighbors.

At the 34th Annual District 7020 Conference held on May 5-11 at the Atlantis Resort on Paradise Island in Nassau Bahamas, President Roy Barry of the Rotary Club of Road Town, and President Mary Finley-Jones of the Rotary Club of Tortola, were awarded the Rotary International Presidential Citation Gold Award and the District 7020 Governor's Gold Award for their respective clubs' achievements in the Rotary year 2007/2008.

KUDOS to the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) Committee for a very successful RYLA weekend. The event was well-planned, well-organized and well-executed. I really enjoyed the weekend and so did the young men and women who participated. To witness their evolvement from Friday to Sunday was truly gratifying.
During October, the Rotary Club of Tortola donated $1,500 to Leo Sealey, known better by many as Popeye. The check, which was made payable to the R. Schneider Regional Medical Center, will help cover medical expenses incurred by Sealey's mother. The Rotary Clubs in the British Virgin Islands are preparing to send a team of professionals off to Virginia, USA in October 2008 on a Group Study Exchange (GSE) programme.
Congratulations are in order for President Mary Finley, who is the first member of our club to complete the Discussion Leader Course of Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) training.
Rotarians have begun their annual project to lose pounds while raising money for the BVI Diabetes Association. At the Septmeber 20th weekly meeting, Rotarians began weighing in for the annual "exercise".

In keeping with the tradition of regular presentations by past presidents, PP Humphry described Rotary's international character at the club's luncheon meeting on August 23.
Susanna Henighan joined the Rotary Club in 2006. She was first invited to a Rotary Club meeting by Valerie Georges-Thomas, and David Baldwin was her sponsor.
Past President Roger Downing says he has been a Rotarian for so long, he can't remember the year he joined, although he reckons it was during the 1970s.

Awards were presented to various members of the Club and the community at large at the last luncheon meeting of the Club for the Rotary year 2006-7. On June 28, 2007, P Ron presented a number of awards including perfect attendance, distinguished service and presidential awards. The awards presentations which included Paul Harris Fellowships continued into the Installation dinner on the following night.
The Club is holding a special dinner in memory of our founding member Cyril B. Romney, who passed away on July 19. The dinner will take place on Wednesday, August 15, at 6 p.m. at the Mariner Inn. There will be no regular luncheon meeting on Thursday, August 16.
It is my privilege and pleasure to welcome you to the 2007/2008 Installation Dinner of the Rotary Club of Tortola. I especially welcome my family and guests who have traveled here to support me. I hope you will all enjoy the fellowship this evening. I would be remiss if I did not pay tribute to my late husband, David Jones, for it's because of him that I am a Rotarian.
The Club took an educational hike and explored one of the amazing trails on the Island of Tortola. During the tour, the Group was educated on VI history.

Rotary Club of Tortola built rails to assist an Elderly to climb the stairs at her home. 
Rotarians Jeff Morgan and Michael Kilhourhy had the job of judging the Joyce Samuel Primary School's first ever Science Fair on 17th March 2017. The Rotary Club of Tortola has been supporting the School in conjunction with the law firm Ogier since "adopting" it in 2010 under the BVI adopted schools program. Joyce Samuel Primary School is the current BVI Primary School of the Year and its Principal, Orlandette Crabbe, was named Primary Principal of the Year in the BVI's Stars in Education Awards.
Rotarians, Rotaractors and Interactors worked on the playground and exterior of the Alexandrina Maduro Primary School. The Team painted the wall and benches and cleaned the entire surrounding of the School.

This year Rotary is celebrating 100 years of Rotary Foundation and to observe this event, the theme of our Floupe in the August Monday Parade was Foundation Centennial.
