President of the Rotary Club of Tortola Percy Rhoden presented President of the Diabetes Association Bennett Smith with a cheque for $10,000 on Thursday, July 10. The funds will aid the Association's ongoing education, screening and support programmes.

Mr. Rhoden said, "Good health is a basic need, and this is why improving health around the world is one of Rotary's fundamental goals. Here in the BVI diabetes is one of the most serious health issues that we face, and so the Rotary Club of Tortola will do its part to help fight this chronic disease."

Mr. Smith said the donated funds will support several of the Diabetes Association's ongoing initiatives. "The Association provides support to people who have diabetes. We also provide information and screening. We hope to encourage early diagnosis, since this helps to arrest the progression of the disease and keep people healthy longer," Mr. Smith said. He noted that the Association's resource centre is open daily, and provides screening, diabetic supplies, and testing.
