Rotary Donates Dictionaries to Class 3 Students

Class 3 students around the BVI got a special back-to-school gift on September 8, thanks to the Rotary Clubs of the BVI.
More than 300 students from public primary schools were given hard-back editions of the Oxford Primary Dictionary. The donation was part of Rotary's activities for International Literacy Day, observed on September 8.
Minister for Education and Culture Honourable Andrew Fahie received the donation on behalf of the students during a presentation ceremony this morning at Leonora Delville Primary School in Cappoon's Bay.
Rotary Assistant District Governor Vance Lewis made the presentation on behalf of Rotarians in the BVI. "Improving literacy is one of Rotary's overall objectives, and we hope that students will put their new dictionaries to good use." Mr. Lewis challenged the students to study hard and become future Spelling Bee champions.
Education Minister Hon. Fahie told the students to take good care of the dictionaries, and to strive for excellence in the newly-opened school year. After handing out the dictionaries to the students, the Minister led the class in a game to look up the word clean in their new dictionaries.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education Mrs. Shelia Brathwaite and President of the Rotary Club of Road Town Stephanie Benn also spoke during today's brief ceremony.
The dictionaries were donated jointly by the Rotary Clubs of Road Town and Tortola, as well as the Rotaract Club and the Interact Club. Each dictionary is stamped with the Rotary Four Way Test, which states: "Is it the TRUTH? Is it FAIR to all concerned? Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIP? Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?"
