Rotarians Support 10th Annual Premier's Cup

Thanks in part to the support of the Rotary Clubs of the BVI, the 10th annual Premier's Cup KATS Youth Regatta (previously the Chief Minister's Cup) was a success. The event, which drew nine teams from around the region, took place from July 11-13. (Photo: Rotarians are ready to serve up breakfast)
St. Thomas emerged the winner over the two-day competition, which enjoyed 10-15 knot winds, plenty of sunshine, and lots of spirited competition. Trinidad finished second, and the BVI team took third place. PP Tom Gerker reported to the Club on July 17 that the race had been a valuable learning event for the BVI team, which performed well but committed a few costly errors.

The first Chief Minister's Cup International Regatta was held in 1999 as a way for youth sailors to test their skills and develop new friendships. The regatta grew out of the Kids and the Sea programme, established in the BVI in 1990. The mission of KATS is to promote the safety of children around and in the sea, open the sea that surrounds us to youth in terms of recreational enjoyment, and to expose them to careers in the marine industry.
The Rotary Clubs of the BVI provided financial and logistical support to the regatta. Rotary volunteers serve food, provide security, transportation, and many other services to ensure that the event takes place.
