Construction Underway in Haiti on the New Good Samaritan School
 

As of 18 August 2010, the foundation has been dug and the first phase of construction is well underway for the Good Samaritan School on Ile a Vache, Haiti. The project broke ground in June and the first several weeks were spent transporting construction materials to site, a long and difficult process in Haiti where roads and transportation links are limited. These photos show that construction has now begun in earnest.




The Good Samaritan School serves dozens of students on the island of Ile a Vache off the southern coast of mainland Haiti. At present, the school is an overcrowded, dilapidated structure built partly of scrap wood and metal, which is open to the elements. Once built, the new Good Samaritan School will feature earthquake-proof and hurricane-proof classrooms, a latrine, kitchen and office.

The Rotary Club of Tortola adopted the Good Samaritan School in 2008 and has raised more than $100,000 for the construction of a new school. In addition to receiving generous contributions from around the world, the project was the recipient of a $51,000 grant from the Rotary Donor Advised Fund (DAF Project) established to assist Haiti with rebuilding after the January 2010 earthquake.
