At the 34th Annual District 7020 Conference held on May 5-11 at the Atlantis Resort on Paradise Island in Nassau Bahamas, President Roy Barry of the Rotary Club of Road Town, and President Mary Finley-Jones of the Rotary Club of Tortola, were awarded the Rotary International Presidential Citation Gold Award and the District 7020 Governor's Gold Award for their respective clubs' achievements in the Rotary year 2007/2008.

President Roy and President Mary were both present at the Conference to receive their awards along with a contingent of about 20 Rotarians from the BVI. "It's been a very rewarding Rotary year, and President Roy and I are proud to have represented Rotary in the BVI at the Conference along with our fellow Rotarians. We had great fellowship, fun and camaraderie between the two clubs and other Rotary Clubs in our District. We are grateful for the support and contributions from the community as we could not have had these accomplishments without it", says President Mary.

"Without the support from our respective Boards and fellow Rotarians, we could not have achieved this great accomplishment", says President Roy.

The BVI's Assistant District Governor, Vance Lewis, also received a special award for his outstanding work in coordinating the activities of the Rotary Clubs of the British Virgin Islands. In receiving the award, ADG Vance commented on the hard work put in by members and the Boards of both Rotary Clubs. ADG Vance added: "We have taken Rotary to new heights in the BVI, and raised our profile at the District level. However, we cannot rest on our laurels; we must use the success we achieved as a foundation for even greater things in the future" During this Rotary year both Clubs worked on several joint projects all of which benefited the local community.

This year's Conference was hosted jointly by District 6930 of Florida (USA) and District 7020 of the Caribbean, and more than 1,000 Rotarians and Rotaractors attended. Several Rotaractors from the BVI also attended the Conference along with their incoming President, Abbi Christopher. "The Conference was an inspiring, motivating and exhilarating experience, and we look forward to continuing the work of Rotary in our community as well as internationally," Ms. Christopher said.

This Rotary year ends on June 30, 2008, and Presidents Roy and Mary will proudly pass the torch to their successors, incoming Presidents Stephanie Benn of the Road Town Club, and Percy Rhoden of the Tortola Club. Rotary in the BVI is, indeed, alive and well.
