Fellow Rotarians,

Happy New Year! I trust that each of you in 2011 would find great fulfillment and joy in whatever you do, that you would continue to enjoy good health and that this would be the year when your commitment to the ideals of Rotary reaches its zenith.

Eighteen days into the beginning of 2010, our commitment to humanity was defined by the catastrophic earthquake that struck Haiti. With fellow Rotarians around the world, we responded to their distress call and continue to do so this time to fight the latest offshoot of this tragedy - a cholera epidemic. Let us continue to pray for better days for our friends and neighbours in Haiti.

Here in the BVI we have had our own challenges including Hurricane Earl and the worst flooding in fifty years. I am proud of our response not only on Tortola I but as far North as to Anegada. Perhaps less known is that we also responded on a more micro level to the needs of our community as expressed by the Social Development Department by buying uniforms, books etc for our children in needs.

Let's not forget the contributions we also made to the start up of a KATS programme on Virgin Gorda, to the Elderly home on Virgin Gorda, and to the development of our young people though the 'B Safe' programme. It's been a busy year but the work of a Rotarian is never done.

2011 provides equally exciting opportunities to serve beginning right off the bat with our Glaucoma Screening in January. My wish for this year is that we redouble our efforts to put service first, that we have more fellowship and fun while serving
