President Valerie and members of the Rotary Club of Tortola paid a visit to Green VI, a non profit organization that focuses on combating climate change through environmental improvements. One of their biggest goal is creating and maintaining a green, clean, healthy, and prosperous BVI.
Green VI conducts various endeavours such:
- Bug Out, which aims to reducing mosquito populations;
- Gardening
- A glass studio, taking old glass bottles and turning it into glass aggregate or glass sculptures
but they are mostly known for their recycling programme in collaboration with the Department of Solid Waste Management.
Back in March of this year, the BVI Rotary Family conducted a combined clean up effort at Long Bay Beef Island and removed over 50 bags of waste along the vicinity of the roadside and beach. Feeling a joyous for the volume of work accomplished quickly turned into sadness by the magnitude of trash that was scattered across the beach. This outcome was the passion derived for a creation of an Antilitter campaign.
The overall goal is to hopefully change the mindset of the general public about littering. This campaign is aimed at educating persons the impact pollution have on our daily lives and the hope persons will stop or prevent others from dumping their garbage along roadsides.
On Tuesday 6th September President Valerie and her team held their first initial meeting with Green Vi's Director Charlotte McDevitt and her team as they educated Rotary about what they've done and how they can help in spreading the word about recycling and reducing one's impacts. It was a fruitful meeting. The team later toured the facility to see how they tackle waste disposal
