2019-04-01 Rotary Buzz

2019-04-01 Rotary Buzz

Ted opened the meeting at 11:45 am with the singing of O Canada and the Rotary Grace!
Health of the Club – Paul Pedersen reported that our health must be good as no one has said otherwise.
Happy BucksDan M is still learning his new position and is thankful that his team is not afraid to tell him when they think he needs to reconsider a decision; Dave S is happy he still has $1 in his pocket after taking grandkids to Disneyland; Lou H is happy that Lisa Vornbrock will be applying for membership in our Club, and also for her upcoming vacation.  Ted G shared the adventures of moving parents into a Senior Living complex.  I think we are all happy it is him and not us going through that!
Announcements and Committee Updates:
  • Gala Update – make sure you have marked your calendars for April 27 at the Best Western.  Dawn plans to attend the next evening meeting and will have tickets. Please use this opportunity to invite the community to support Rotary.  This year we will honor long time Rotarian Ken Drever with a special tribute and thanks.  This is our major fundraiser for the year, so if we want to continue to do major projects in the community and internationally, we need the support of ALL members to get people out and collect items for our auctions.
  • KIVA update we made 3 new loans in the last month or two, to purchase equipment to expand businesses.
  • Spring Leadership Assembly in March – Ted shared some pieces of a presentation given at the conference about recruiting and retaining members.  A couple of interesting statistics coming out of a survey:
Why do people join Rotary?  #1 was to have local impact and #2 was fellowship.
Why do people stay in Rotary?  #1 was fellowship and #2 was local impact.
So when we talk to potential new members and tell them we have 1.2 billion members worldwide and are proud to be “this close” to eradicating polio, it seems we are missing the most important information:  what we do in our community and how we make lasting friendships. Food for thought the next time you talk to someone about why they should join our Club.
  • AGLC items
    • Charitable Gaming Review – underway, Morris Henderson representing both Rotary Clubs on the Regional Working Group.  Major concerns seem to be inequitable wait times and distribution of proceeds
    • Chase the Ace – 4 Rotarians (Lou and Morris Henderson, Roy Wallace, John Stoddart) met with 4 senior staff from AGLC’s raffle licensing area including the VP of Regulatory Services.  The AGLC staff listened to our ideas of how Progressive Raffles could be structured in Alberta to address the concerns AGLC has about licensing raffles of this nature beyond the current $20,000 threshold.  They complimented us on the research we have done and the knowledge we have of the raffle process.  They thanked us for acknowledging the position AGLC has as Regulator in managing the risk to the public and to charities associated with charitable gaming.  The VP, Dave Berry, promised to take our ideas forward and assured us that he has an open mind toward changes in this area.  It is unlikely that AGLC will seriously look at opening up progressive raffles to higher limits any time soon, as they want to evaluate the impact of the recent changes made to raffle license limits and random number generators.
  • Kassia Fardoe Global Scholarship Grant
Kassia has not yet received her acceptance from London School of Economics. The Rotary Club of Dulwich, Peckham and Crystal Palace has offered to be her Host club in London. We have started a Global Scholarship Grant application. Kassia is busy completing her information for the Global Grant and District Grant.  As soon as Kassia is accepted I will email out the Global Grant Number so that anyone who wishes to direct Foundation donations to her scholarship can do so. Deadline for applying is June so we have a bit of time.  Please consider supporting Kassia by making your 2019 Foundation donations before the end of June, and designating them to this Scholarship Grant.
50/50 - $201 – Carman Mason drew the Queen of Diamonds—not the Ace of Spades.

  • Meeting adjourned at 12:50 pm.
  • Next meeting – Evening Meeting, April 8, 2019, 6:00 pm
  • Presentation on the 2018 Youth Canoe Trip by Augustana and Camrose Police leaders

Health of the Club – Paul Pedersen reported that our health is very good.
Happy Bucks – Gordon Berg dropped off a poster for an About Time Productions event (described below) with a Happy Buck for the announcement. Announcements and Committee Updates:

  • Jenn Stone has agreed to step forward as the President Elect Nominee, meaning she will follow Roy as President for the 2020-2021 year.  Thanks Jenn!!
Presentation:  Roy Wallace, President Elect, Vision for the Rotary Club of Camrose
Roy began by thanking Ted for allowing him to “intrude” on his Presidential year and introduce his vision for our Club in the upcoming year.  Roy describes himself as a Dreamer, which he refers to as “Youthful Exuberance”.  He wants to build on the Rotary International President’s theme for 2019-2020:  Rotary Connects the World.  Roy believes our Camrose Club to be the best Rotary Club in Canada, and wants us to stop keeping this a secret and dedicate ourselves to getting the word out.  His vision is for us to Dream Big:  set Big Goals that will require 100% active participation by our Club members to achieve them.  This, Roy believes, will motivate us to be more engaged and encourage us to promote Rotary much more than we have in the past few years.
Roy’s 3 priorities will be:
  1. Membership
  2. Communication
  3. Fundraising
He went on to describe the goals he has in mind, and ways that they can be reached.  It is difficult to capture his enthusiasm and the energy he brings in a few words, so I am not going to make a poor attempt.  You will hear much more from Roy over the upcoming months, and I am sure that you will find his love of Rotary contagious and before you know it you will be sharing your dreams as well!

Rotary Cares:  March winner is Matt Banack of Camrose, ticket #051 sold by Jerome Stetar
50/50 - $195 (?) – Paul Pedersen drew the Jack of Clubs (I think)—not the Ace of Spades.

  • Meeting adjourned at 1:00 pm.
  • Next meeting - Noon Meeting, April 1, 2019, 11:45 am.(No joke)

2019-01-28 Rotary Buzz – Club Assembly
Ted opened the meeting at 11:45 am. We did our best to sign O Canada and the Rotary Grace but we were missing our strongest singers!
Health of the Club – Paul Pedersen reported that Ken Drever may be in hospital but he has not confirmed that.  Otherwise we are all good!
Happy Bucks – Dan M had a week off to spend in Medicine Hat, and also to renovate the last of his 3 bathrooms.  Dawn A is also completing renos in preparation to list her house for sale.  Lou H had a birthday on the week end and celebrating by throwing axes (but not at Morris).  Ted G is back from a fantastic vacation in Mexico.
Rotary Cares – Ticket sales for 2019 are finished, with 23 tickets unsold.  Gross proceeds will be $27,700, $12,000 to be given away as prizes so net will be $15,700. Proceeds go towards funding our annual donations to the Air Cadets and Army Cadets.
Announcements and Committee Updates:
  • Our 2 Rotary Clubs are planning activities to celebrate Rotary Day.
    • The committee is organizing a social evening at the Bailey Theatre on Saturday, Feb 23. There is a Rose City Roots performance that night featuring Red Moon Road. We will be pre-selling tickets so start lining up your friends to come out, enjoy some music, and celebrate Rotary.  We will update you on the rest of the plans next week.
    • We also want to celebrate Rotary in Camrose by doing a community project.  We feel that the Food Bank could use some donations in February so we plan to distribute brown bags in a neighbourhood on Saturday Feb 23 and pick them up (filled) on Wednesday Feb 27.  More details on that to follow next week as well.
  • Gala Update – Dawn will be contacting those who volunteered last year to confirm their participation this year.  Gala Dinner and Auction is planned for April 27 at the Best Western Camrose Resort Casino
    • Dan will do the Live Auction.
    • Dawn will continue to lead the Gala committee even though her new job in Red Deer will keep her busy
    • Dawn is coordinating the Silent Auction and has already begun collecting prizes.
    • Florence will lead the decorating team, and Shirley will work her magic on the displays
    • Please start lining up your guests and get your tickets from Dawn or Dan.
  • Kiva Update – Ted brought us up to date on our lending activities over the past few months.  We received $144 credit from loan repayments and refunds.  We made new loans totaling $190, utilizing the credit plus some more funds from our budget.  To date we have spent about half of our current year budget of $1,000.  The loans we chose to support were for fertilizer, a water tank, a woodworking business.  To date since we first started Kiva financing we have made 32 loans in 14 countries.
  • End Polio Oil Kings Hockey Game on Feb 18 – Dawn Anderson has offered to drive up to 9 people to the hockey game.  Tickets are $25 with $7 going to End Polio Now.  Contact Dawn if you want tickets and a ride.
  • Wine and Appetizers gathering at the Roberts’ home this coming Saturday Feb 2.  Bring a bottle of wine and/or an appetizer to share. Anytime after 7 pm until Marnie kicks you out.
  • Review of Charitable Gaming Policies – AGLC has started a review with an online survey sent to all groups who have had gaming licenses.  Next step will be public consultations later in 2019.  Our Club has expressed interest in being part of the review committee.  Lou H reported that possibly the letter-writing campaign which our Club initiated is responsible for, or at least helped to speed up. the review process. Ted kindly thanked Lou for her work.
  • Global Grant Scholarship Presentation next week – Lou reported that Kassia Fardoe, a young lady who has been an exemplary volunteer for Rotary, is looking for a club to sponsor her studies with a RI Global Grant Scholarship. She and past DG Laura Morie will be our guest speakers next week.  Please come out to hear Kassia’s story and consider how Rotary’s sponsorship will be beneficial to all concerned.
Notice of Motion:
Kim Boyco explained that we received a District Grant for $2,996 this year, which was to be used for the Jamaica Incubators project.  After applying for the District Grant the International Projects committee decided to apply for a Global Grant.  We are not allowed to use the District Grant for a project funded by a Global Grant.  However, the District is open to allowing us to re-allocate the grant to another project, perhaps something local.  We must match the grant funds with club funds.
We discussed using the grant to help with the cost of replacing the Rotary Park Sign now that the bridge construction is complete.  While the sign design and total cost is not known, it is thought to be upwards of $10,000.  If the Club contributes $3,000 to match the District Grant of $2,996, then we hope the City will pay most or all of the additional funds required.
Notice of Motion (to be voted on next week):
Moved by Kim Boyco, seconded by Dawn Anderson that a request be submitted to the District Grants committee that funds in the amount of $2996.00 from our 2018/2019 District Grant be reallocated to a local Camrose project, specifically to replace the Rotary Park sign, on the understanding that funds from the grant are to be matched by an equal amount from club proceeds as per grant rules.
Rotary Cares:  January’s winner is Michelle Majeski Camrose, ticket #043 sold by Dawn Anderson
50/50 - $144 – Dan Macpherson drew the Queen of Spades.

  • Meeting adjourned at 1:00 pm.
  • Next meeting - Noon Meeting, February 4, 2019, 11:45 am.
  • Kassia Fardoe and Laura Morie
  • Topic – Global Grant Scholarship to support Kassia to study

Odell introduced our guest speaker Dr. Allen Berger, Dean of UA Augustana

Dr. Allen Berger provided us with many updates on Augustana.

In 2004 the University converted from Camrose Lutheran College into the U of A, the university is maxed out on enrolment, which means higher admissions standards.
Actively involved in outreach in Alberta, providing certificate courses to leaders in the community.
Just managed to obtain a half a million dollar gift that will go towards an observatory.
At the beginning Augustana was seen as more of a beneficiary, but more recently Augustana is seen as a contributor.  The traditional calendar increased students stress, so they have devised a new schedule. The new schedule increases opportunities for travel because they are just focused on one class. No student is balancing more than three or four classes at a time.  Smaller class sizes gives a higher impact.  Only 70 percent of students graduate, so they are trying to improve the success rate.  Best predictor of success is the first term of university.  First three weeks is the best indicator of student success. Research has suggested that the changes they have made increases retention, and success rates. There are many and advantages to having a three week course, but there are still many areas in which they can improve. Looking further ahead, U of A is going to attempt to raise 1.5 billion dollars to create a Centre of Excellence of rural health and wellness.

We provided Dr. Allen Berger with a certificate to vaccinate ten children against polio.

50/50 Glenda was the winner.

-District Conference was well attended from our Camrose Clubs.  10 from Camrose on Saturday.
- Hospice Society sponsoring Compassionate Communities:  Caring for Our Caregivers, Nov 16

Presentation:  World Polio Day Oct 24

We viewed several videos from Rotary.org related to the End Polio Now! Campaign.  The videos talk about the polio epidemic of the 1950’s in North America, and the impact on citizens, mainly children.  Rotary became involved in the movement to end polio in 1988, and in the last 30 years, a 99.9% reduction in polio victims has been seen worldwide! New cases of polio in the last 2 years are about 20 per year, and the 3 countries still affected are Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria. We dare not stop vaccinations and efforts to reach remote and war-torn parts of these countries.  A re-infection for any country is no more than a plane ride away ….
Thanks to generous contributions from the Rotary Foundation, many governments, the World Health Organization and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation the vaccinations continue, and we believe that we will succeed in eradicating this disease.

Please consider donating to the Rotary Foundation, Polio Plus fund to support our efforts to eradicate this disease completely.

Our own local member, Jim Rasmussen, is a polio survivor. Jim presented some facts about how polio affects the body, and shared some bits of his personal story.

Next meeting Oct 29 at lunch, which will be our monthly Club Assembly. Board meeting Oct 23 at Dawn’s house at 5:15.

Dave Stolee was the 50/590 winner, and drew the Ace of ….. Clubs!
Dave led us to close our meeting with the 4-way test.

Presentation:  Cannabis Industry Perspective, Grant Gillott

Grant and his wife Jaye have purchased land and buildings north of Camrose as the site of a cannabis production facility.  He is very close to starting construction of a building in which to grow plants, with 3 more buildings to follow quickly. As a person who has done much research into the pros and cons of producing cannabis, Grant is excited that Canada has taken this step to be a world leader in the cannabis industry.  This will provide business opportunities for producers, packaging, retail entrepreneurs. A very profitable by-product, cbd oil, has also been approved for production and distribution.  Grant and Jaye are extremely positive and optimistic about the future for this industry in Alberta and all of Canada. Grant predicts that demand will be greater than supply for many years.

There were several general questions which led to discussion on a number of cannabis-related topics.  Some of the comments from Grant included:
-unlike opioids, cannabis has never been directly responsible for a death
- cannabis legalization is a huge step forward in the rights of the individual, as it removes criminalization from an act that a person does to him/herself.
-removal of the stigma from cannabis use will lead to reduction in people suffering from anxiety and paranoia related to their use of cannabis.
-description of the advertising and marketing restrictions legislated with respect to packaging: warning labels, allowable size of font for the company name
-not-licensed sellers of cannabis, ie illicit trade, will face stiff penalties if they don’t comply with Health Canada guidelines.  It will be a more risky business to be in.
We thanked Grant with a Polio vaccination certificate.

Next meeting Oct 22 at lunch.  Presentation will be about Polio, and World Polio Day Oct 24.
Board meeting Oct 23 at Dawn’s house at 5:15.

Ron Grue won the $9 50/50 jackpot. Ron led us to close our meeting with the 4-way test.

Dan Cole:
Born in Calgary and his early years he enjoyed school sports and seemed to be a little rebel. After graduation he went onto UofC where he completed a math degree. Travel bug drew him to backpack for 7 months through many countries and he found the best part was to meet new people and see how they lived.
He returned to Calgary and completed his Ba in Education. Moving to Crooked Creek Alberta he taught, met his soon to be wife and started a family. Dan’s wife Vikki and Dan took a sabbatical and both achieved their masters. Returning to Crooked Creek they taught and then planed their next move. The family moved to Camrose when the three children were just young. Then life began to get busy with kids sports and events. The family enjoys hiking and long distance running. They all participate in different marathons and have hiked throughout the Rockies. They all have a love of jokes and make memories having fun. Dan loves to build in his backyard and his home is his castle. Dan has been in Jack Stuart, Sparling and Chester Ronning schools. He is most proud of the Growing the Leaders in Me program and the joint effort with a school in China. Dan’s trip to China made a lasting impression on him. Currently Dan is the BRSD Principal -Numeracy and supports teachers with the math programs. Dan’s passion is to help others. His bucket list included: travel, family, Rotary Projects possibly International projects, mission work and working with the Camrose community.
Jim Rasmussen:
1956-1957 school year Jim was apart of the testing for the Polio vaccine and although he received the placebo, when he did contract Polio he was one of the lucky ones and it didn’t kill him. Through out school years Jim reached many successes but didn’t like school a great deal. He traveled throughout Europe, Turkey, Spain, Germany and Iran. He returned to Canada and started his fiberglass company in Strome, Alberta. As a smart business man, Jim has experiences challenges and successes. His business started out with canoes and grow to pump trucks. He has many interesting stories of projects along the way. He and his wife have 5 children and now their numbers reach 21. He loves golfing and their winter home in Mesa.
Thank you to both Dan and Jim for telling us more about themselves.
Next week’s meeting is cancelled as it is Thanksgiving. Following meeting is an evening meeting.

Cannabis Information Panel with Dr. Deena Hinshaw, Dr. Tim Parker and Cst. John Fernhout.
This topic and the information provided was very valuable and allowed for a question period with all attendees. We heard about various matters related to cannabis legalization from the public health perspective and some of the municipal and law enforcement challenges.  Dr. Parker shared interesting science about how cannabis affects the brain as well as some comparisons between the effects of alcohol and cannabis. As the information is complicated and somewhat controversial we have chosen to list the related websites for you to do your own research. As the internet is filled with wrong information, this seemed the responsible way to present this information to our members and the community.

  • There are 2 open positions on the Board:  Community Service and Public Relations.  If anyone can step up and help out with one of these positions please let Ted know.
Kiva Micro Loans Update:

  • If anyone wants to personally get involved in lending, go to the Kiva website for instruction.  Ted is always happy to help you get started as well.

  • The suggestion is that while the business owner/manager might not be interested in joining, perhaps they would sponsor a mid-level manager for Rotary membership.

  • Keep thinking about where we might gain some new corporate members, and bring those ideas for further discussion next Club Assembly on Sept 24.

The students involved were identified as youth at risk or in a low-income situation. The week-long trip on the North Saskachewan River. Change in Club Administration:
Past President Lou Henderson and current President Ted Gillespie did the ceremonial gavel hand off, signaling the official change in leadership for the 2018 2019 year.  Lou remarked that it was a privilege for her to serve as President, and that she is confident that Ted will do a great job as her successor.
Lou also announced that she will be taking on the role of Assistant Governor for this area, following in the footsteps of Ray Hook.
Introduction of Guests:
  • Pat Tones, guest of Lou, prospective member
Judges Tony Hladun and Grant Burgess asked for Happy Bucks.  No fines today.
  • Thanks to Dawn Anderson for hosting the BBQ on July 16 to meet and greet Mikkel’s family.
  • Thanks to all Rotary volunteers who came out to support the Camrose Flying Club in hosting the Snowbirds Air Show on Wednesday evening (July 18).  Ron Grue asked Lou to be sure and convey their appreciation.
Club Assembly:
President Ted
  • Ted gave his opening address as President, referring to RI President Barry Rassin’s address to the 2018 Convention in Toronto.  President Rassin stressed the importance of bringing in new members to Rotary, which we have identified as a priority for our Club as well.  The theme this year is “Be the Inspiration”, and Ted urges all of us to inspire one another in our efforts to serve, so that we can engage new members and generate new ideas for service and for fundraising.
  • Ted distributed “Be The Inspiration” pins for each of us
  • A reminder to please complete the District Survey.  This will provide valuable information for the Club Executive, not just for District.
International Projects Director Roy Wallace
  • update on the Tanga Medical Skills Lab project.  The deadline for submission of the Global Grant application is July 31, and the Rotary Club of Tanga will make the submission by that date.  We are close to getting started!
  • Jamaica Children’s Hospital Incubator project is coming along.  We have applied for a CIP grant in the amount of $20,000.  Once we hear whether or not we are successful, then we will proceed to apply for matching funding from the Canadian Government, then a Global Grant.
  • In partnership with the Emmanuel Foundation, our Club is working with a Rotary Club in Jamaica to arrange to send them surplus hospital beds from an Alberta hospital.  The Jamaica Club will make shipping arrangements and pay the associated costs.  Our role is purely as a conduit to make this happen.
Secretary Kim Boyco
  • Our new Bylaws have been approved by Corporate Registry--Yay!!
  • Thanks to the volunteers for Martha’s Table.  We have one more lunch to serve this Thursday.
  • Rotary has been asked to judge the BVJ parade again this year on Thursday August 2.  David Taylor, Jenn Stone, Jerome Stetar and Jim Rasmussen have agreed to help.  Any one else interested should contact Kim.  A couple more people would be nice. No experience or particular skills required!
Club Service Director Lou Henderson
  • Lou has temporarily taken over publishing The Buzz, as Tina Yarbrough is on a medical leave at this time.  She asked for volunteers to help on a rotating basis, one meeting per month.  Shirley Rostad, Pat Tones and Jenn Stone offered to assist as available.  Ted noted that Tina has done an outstanding job of The Buzz, but cautions that a much simpler version is fine, as this does not need to be a time-consuming and onerous task.
  • Lou provided a brief summary of the research she has done towards investigating the feasibility of our Club taking on a Chase the Ace raffle.  Current AGLC regulations limit the licensing of progressive 50/50 raffles at $10,000 Gross Proceeds.  Other provinces, notably the Maritimes, have allowed such raffles to be licensed with small organizations able to generate significant funds.  Word on the street is that AGLC will eventually change their regulation to allow for the larger raffles.  Lou asked for approval from the members to draft a proposal for our Club to run an electronic-ticketed Chase the Ace raffle modelled on the one run by the Fire Department of New London, PEI.  We would submit the proposal to AGLC as pilot project, and see if we are successful. Motion to this effect was made by Jim Rasmussen, seconded by Jenn Stone, carried. Jenn Stone, Florence Blanchette, Roy Wallace volunteered to help Lou prepare the proposal.
50/50 – only 2 cards—Dan Cole was not able to score on his 50/50 chance, and drew the 4 of Clubs. Poor Dan! Only the Ace is left, so we will have a winner next week! The pot is up to $800+.
Next meeting - Noon Meeting, July 30, 2018, 11:45 am
Topic –District Governor, Ingrid Neitsch will be visiting our Club and giving us a presentation on her goals and inspiration for the coming year. Please attend to hear her message, and to show what a vibrant club we have!  Bring guests!!  Good chance to inspire people you know who might be interested in knowing more about Rotary.

Feature Presentation:
Our guest speaker was Petra Schulz representing an Edmonton-based group Moms Stop the Harm (MSTH).  MSTH is a network of Canadian families who have lost a loved one due to substance abuse, or who hope for recovery.
“We call for an end to the failed war on drugs, which is a war on the people we love.  We envision a new approach based on reducing harm, where people who use drugs are treated with respect, compassion and support.” (MSTH promotional card)
Petra lost her son in 2014 from a Fentanyl overdose.  He was only 25.  Petra shared a bit of her son’s history with substance abuse, and told us that most kids who take drugs have experiences some sort of significant trauma in their childhood, or suffer from some form of mental health issues.  The opioid crisis is real, and can affect any family from any culture and any level of income.  The continuing stigma associated with substance addiction contributes to the difficulty addicts have in getting clean, as they do not feel they can ask for help.  The most toxic of the opioids are fentanyl (50% stronger than morphine) and carfentanyl which is stronger yet. Opioid receptors induce a sense of well-being, but also inhibit breathing, which can cause death. There is a high risk of relapse after rehabilitation, creating an ongoing struggle for an addict to stay clean.

MSTH advocates for a harm reduction strategy promoting the use of Naloxone which can be used to reverse an overdose.  Like first aid, this drug is complete safe and can made the difference between life and death.  Alberta has the widest distribution of free Naloxone kits in the country (available at most pharmacies (drugsafe.ca)) but gaps still exist, especially in rural and First Nations communities and jails.

Many experts across Canada are trying to address this problem and are asking the
government to develop policies (laws and regulations) to help prevent the number of
deaths from increasing in a few different ways:
1) Prevention – stopping it before it happens – school education programs; education and new rules for doctors about prescribing
2) Treatment – prescribing mediations like methadone or suboxone to individuals who have opioid use disorder & more health care providers to prescribe; treatment centers
3) Harm Reduction – like wearing a seatbelt in a car – we assume that a certain number of people will drive cars so we provide support to try to reduce the negative consequences of drug use
4) Enforcement – supply and distribution – police and border patrol

MSTH believes in the power of parent advocacy, and in building a support system for families enduring the grief of having a loved one at risk, or having lost a family member.

Member Induction - Dan Cole, proposed by Dan Macpherson

Dan has been a resident of Camrose for the past 22 years.  He is married to Vicki and they have 3 children.  Dan works for the Battle River School Division as Division Principle and his wife is a 4th year Education at the U of A.  He has been the principal at Jack Stewart and Chester Ronning Schools.

Dan enjoys running, he previously ran a 10k in Banff, hiking, fishing, and traveling (he has visited over 30 countries).

Feature Presentation:
Tony Hladun, Pipeline Technology

Canada is the world's fourth-largest producer of oil behind the US, Saudi Arabia, and Russia.  Yet there still seems to be misconceptions that continue to persist about this industry.  Tony sets out to sort some of these myths straight.

Pipelines are inherently dangerous.

There are inherent dangers to just about everything.  But pipelines are the safest way to transport energy.  During construction, testing is in place of the pipe fabrication and steel manufacturing.  Application of coatings to the pipeline for corrosion is done.

For leak detection, once the pipe is put in the ground, there are internal and external detection technologies that are in place such as video monitoring sensor hoses and pressure point analysis among many others.

The world is going away from fossil fuels and developing economies are going green.

The global demand for oil is 100 million barrels per day is being consumed.  A big producer of oil, the US, produces 15.5 million barrels but they consume 20 million.

The developing countries of China and India both use 72%  of coal for their electricity.  Apparently, no one told them they were supposed to go green.

Cars are going electric.

Though electric cars are on the rise, in 2017 76.33 million vehicles were produced that use gas or diesel.  That isn't including vehicles that are already on the road.  There are currently 1 billion vehicles in the world.

Alberta can easily switch to a new economy.

The oil and gas make up 18% of our industries.  It's a little number and one would think it would be easy to switch to something else.  What people don't take into account is that it is Alberta's number one revenue generating machine.  Replacing that is a little bit harder.

BC is a green leader.

The fact is BC exported 36.8 million tonnes of coal last year which is equivalent to 650,000 barrels of oil per day in CO2.

Tony's Predictions:
  • The government will do lots of talking about our energy and the pipeline but there will be no action.
  • Provinces will disagree because our economies are very different.
  • Many lawyers will become very rich because this will become a constitutional issue.
  • Farmers will suffer because railways will be used to ship oil instead of their crops.
  • Alberta is the largest producer of oil and will sell to the US because they are the only friend we have.
  • Canada will lose economic benefits because we sell at a discount and we buy at a premium.

50/50 – The pot is over $640.  Grant Burgess drew the Queen of Clubs.

Meeting adjourned at 1:20 pm.
