The Buzz – November 15, 2015
President Tony opened the meeting at 1220pm by welcoming guests John McShane (new member), and guest speakers representing the Stollery Children’s Hospital - Mike House( President & CEO of the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation), Cyndi Matthews (Development Officer), Brett, Nicole and Macy Denham, Cliff Denham, Brian Austrom and Rod Ross.
Health of the Club – no report, although Jim R. has made it safe to Arizona, and anyone available to visit with Abe Friesen would be greatly appreciated.
Executive Meeting – executive will be meeting on December 1 at 515pm in the Camrose Resort Casino board room.
Rotary Cares Raffle – Lou said tickets are still available to picked up. 300 tickets sold for $100 each – 12 draws of $1,000 each... once per month in 2016. She will be back on Dec. 7 at which time she hopes to see cash from ticket sales start to roll in.
Rotary Daybreak – club will be having a special social evening monthly (first one is/was on November 18) at Stockman’s Chophouse. Members of both clubs are invited to attend for some social time.
Rotary Gala Meeting – the next meeting of the Rotary Gala committee will be on Thursday November 26th at noon at the Best Western Plus. Please RSVP to Dan so he can have soup/sandwiches (restaurant lunch special) available for those who would like lunch.
Greeters/Judges – David and Sheila did a great job in collecting happy bucks/fines from members.

History of the Stollery: “2001 marks the official beginning of the Stollery Children's Hospital Foundation. But it was a long journey reaching this point, with generations of concerned and generous citizens paving the way to ensure the best pediatric care in our region.
Our story begins in 1978, when the Northern Alberta Children's Hospital Foundation was established to advocate for a children's hospital in Edmonton. In 1992, the name was changed to the Children's Health Foundation of Northern Alberta to more accurately reflect the role of the Foundation in raising funds to support the regional Child Health program.
The next seven years saw the Foundation's work touch the lives of a greater diversity of children than ever before, with kids from across Canada benefiting from the Child Health program's specialized services. It was during this time that Bob and Shirley Stollery provided a generous donation that would be the catalyst for a dedicated children's hospital.

The Stollery donation was complemented by the Children's Health Foundation's launch of a successful capital campaign that raised more than $10 million towards the construction of a children's hospital in Edmonton. In order to minimize the significant overhead costs associated with the operation and maintenance of a free-standing hospital, the facility was constructed within the existing walls of the Walter C. Mackenzie Health Sciences Centre, sharing space with the University of Alberta Hospital.
The Stollery Children's Hospital opened in October of 2001. In honour of the Stollery family who played a major role in making the Hospital everything it is today, the Children's Health Foundation changed its name to the Stollery Children's Hospital Foundation. We continue to be dedicated to supporting the needs of the Stollery Children's Hospital.”

Mike said the Stollery is not a “city” hospital as 50% of the patients come from outside the metro Edmonton area. Only the most severe cases from the 75 hospitals from across the province come to one of the only two children’s hospitals in Alberta.
The Foundation’s current goal is to expand and equip a new operating room – as this will help reduce the number of kids (and families) waiting for surgery. The new room is projected to cost $500,000 – and there is currently over $136,000 raised so far.
Mike provided a “children’s point of view” of the hospital process – something that helped put the experience into perspective; and the Stollery being more than just a hospital with its child-focused care model.

In appreciation, Past-President David presented Polio Plus certificates to all our guests.
50/50 Draw – Tony drew the 9 of Hearts from the new deck, leaving the pot to grow for another week.
