This week we heard from one of our newest members, Roger Maschke, as he presented his classification speech.

Request for 4 people to assist in wrapping & loading wheelchairs on Thurs., Aug. 20th at 1:00pm at the Brick.
 
Vote for the Environmental budget increase of $500 to $2500.  Results: Unanimously yes.
 
Discussion on spending limits.  Vote on expenditures over $1000? $500? Executive will discuss more.
 
Reminder: Executive meeting on Tuesday evening.
 
Club Assembly is next week.  Directors will be reporting.
 
Silent auction item list was emailed this morning.
 
Speaker: Classification Speech for Roger Maschke
  • Owner of the Camrose Morning News
  • Born in Red Deer, but spent most of my growing up years in Rosalind and Camrose
  • Attended the UofA for 1 year then moved back to Camrose
  • Met my wife 26 years ago while we were both waiting tables at the Norsemen Inn
  • Has 2 great kids Matthew and Connor
  • Designed wireless networks and data cabling systems for the Battle River School Division and now have been the owner/operator of the Camrose Morning News for 11 years
  • The period of my life that defined who I am now, began with the birth of my son Matthew. Matthew was diagnosed with Spina Bifida while Colleen was 7 months pregnant and not expected to live. The day he was born, the lesion on his back was not as large as anticipated and two 20-year old kids looked at each other and said “We have a son!”
  • Over the next few years I learned: Decision paralysis is not an option. Matthew had over 30 surgeries in the first 15 years of his life. Colleen & I had to take the info given to us and make those decisions within hours.
  • Making mistakes is OK. Matthew had club feet that required breaking the bones and weekly leg cast changes for over a year.The first week he was cast free, I was horsing around with him on the bed and snap, broke his leg. Father of the year.
  • Surround yourself with good people. Matthew needed people around him who wouldn’t baby him and had his best interests at heart.
  • Sometimes all you need is faith and courage. Even after everything we experienced with Matthew, we decided to have another child and Connor was born without Spina Bifida 3 years later.
  • I realize now that these experiences have shaped me and molded me into the man before you today. Matthew just turned 24 years old and is living independently in Camrose. Connor just got accepted to the Augustana Computing Science program.Life is good.
  • Fielded questions regarding the distribution of the Camrose Morning News, their printing services and non-profit rates.
