Attended Gavin’s baseball game, big win. Accompanied LeRoy to soccer in Edmonton – both games were good to watch.

Check www.cargillag.ca for details and videos about various aspects of the new plant in the county just south east of the city.

Our facility started production in May. It takes in canola seed and produces canola oil, targeting 1.0K MT per day, and canola meal, targeting 1.5K MT per day. The oil can be refined to customer requirements as the batches are processed. Bottling if needed is done at Cargill’s plant in Clavet Saskatchewan. The meal is used primarily for hog and chicken feed. Cargill will draw on 1.3 million acres of the 4.9 planted in Alberta to meet its production target of 850,000 MT of canola seed in year one. Most seed will arrive by truck from within a 300 km radius of Camrose. Expect 150 Super Bs to enter and leave the plant every day. Rail facilities are available if the seed needs to come from a greater distance. Served by both CP and CN 17 km of track and 24 switches enable siting of up to 340 rail cars for shipment and storage. 30K MT seed storage is available on site.

Some interesting facts include:

  • Trucks are weighed and probed for grade as they enter the plant site and have dumped and left within a 6 minute window,
  • CP may block Highway 13 twice a day (at random times) for 5 minutes each to access the plant,
  • To self deliver to the plant a test, contract and orientation are required,
  • Cargill built a new road from the highway to the plant to avoid excess traffic on existing roads,
  • On site water use other than storage is primarily personal use not production use,
  • 50 to 75 full-time employees are needed to operate the plant,
  • Camrose County has updated a number of roads anticipating increased truck traffic in the future,
  • Cargill has been in Camrose since 2012 to develop the plant,
  • Cargill’s 4 business units in Camrose have supported the University, Food Bank, Battle River Watershed and many other community needs for a long time

Special Request:

Cargill is offering money for worthy projects. The Battle River Watershed Alliance is in the running. Here is a request for your vote(s) to support this effort.
Friends of the Battle River Watershed

At BRWA we are in the middle of a $25,000 funding competition and we need to show Cargill community support for our Explore More Program. Votes for our project idea is one way to show support. This is where you can help.

Look for our Explore More project and VOTE.
You can vote every day but my experience says unless you have a sticky note to vote every day on your computer screen life gets in the way. This is where I can help. Let me know you have voted. After your first vote I can add you to the list of emails I vote for every day.
Thanks for your help. Feel free to share this with people you think also support the Battle River Watershed.
Regards,
David Samm,
General Manager
