The Buzz - February 13, 2017
Air Cadets presentation and a State of the City Address from Mayor Norm Mayer.
Meeting called to order at 6:00pm.
Tony Hladun introduced Captain Meier from the Air Cadets. Rotary has been supporting the Air Cadets for 60 years.
- Air Cadets had a very successful year. Currently have 40 good kids.
- They have achieved a green rating on their operations.
- Currently have a full contingent of staff.
- Captain Meier drives from St. Albert 2-3 times/week.
- 3 cadets are competing for scholarship awards.
- At Christmas time, they decided to donate to the Open Door instead of doing a gift exchange.
- Their trip to Ottawa included marching in the National Remembrance Day Parade, 4 cadets got to be flag bearers and visits to the Aviation Museum, a Senators game and the nature museum.
- June 11th is the 60th Anniversary dinner
Health of the club is good.Ashley White Feb. 10th Facebook post stated that her week of skiing in the Alps was finished. She ended up with a swollen/bruised knee cap but she is OK.March 1st is the next Gala meeting.District Conference is April 6-8, 2017 in WestlockMikkel update:
- On Tuesday, he attended the Kodiak game with the Shelter box display and raised $200.
- Wednesday he had a basketball game and they won!
- Friday, he attended a ballet at the art gallery in Edmonton and then an Oilers game.
- On Sunday, he went to Gavin’s hockey game in Wainwright and then played cards at Sheila’s.
State of the City presentation by Norm Mayer:
- Camrose hasn’t been hit as hard due to our diverse economy.
- 2 new residential developments – Iron Wood Estates (29 single family lots) and Valleyview West.
- 148 residential lots developed in 2016.
- Last year’s successes include the Encana arena solar project, the Community Bus pilot project (Saturday run starting Feb. 18), the Taxi Token project, Wayfinder signage (more signage in the downtown area in 2017) and the garbage collection totes.
- City census was 18,044 while the federal census was 18,742.
- 1.27% tax levy increase in 2017, 1.32% in 2018.
- Capital projects include the Wastewater treatment expansion, the 48 Ave. bridge, public works facility and the aquatic centre expansion.
- The 48 Ave bridge will be shut down for 6 months while in construction.
