The Buzz - June 22, 2015

 

President David Samm opened the meeting at 1215PM and welcomed guests Roger Maschke (prospective member) and RYE students Analyn and Phillip.

 

Announcements – executive meeting Tuesday June 23 at 515PM in the Casino boardroom. Work bee on Wednesday morning to prep wheelchairs for shipment to Mexico. Shirley presented Massie with a special Stanley Cup replica ring.

 

Health of the Club – Abe Friesen is temporarily house bound, so if anyone is able to visit him he would appreciate the visit.

 

Rotary Youth Exchange – Donna said it is time for the club to consider if we want to continue with the  Youth Exchange program. There are many pros and cons about the program, therefore there will be a survey at the June 29 meeting to provide guidance for the committee. If the club decides to be part of the program, we will need to provide a candidate to the district before Christmas. This would be for 2016/17 exchange year. Three host families will be needed to host the student for three or four months at a time, and they are paid a stipend to defer expenses.  It is an unforgettable experience for the students and the club, but the endeavour does need full club support.  The membership will be polled at the June 29 meeting.

 

Happy Bucks – a very happy crowd this week with  David T, Randall, Ken D, Jill, Donna, Dan and Roy all being happy.

 

Because Canada Day is on Wednesday and does not impact our regular meeting day, we will still be meeting on June 29^th.

 

Guest Speaker – Massie’s AWESOM Canadian experience

                Massie recapped his Canadian experience with a photo-filled presentation. His first home was with Dawn and Gavin…and homes in Canada are nothing like homes in Brazil. His first impression of Canada was one of Monster Trucks and wide, open fields…and gas stations located beside each other. He was excited to watch hockey and the thought of going to a garage sale to buy someone else’s used stuff was very surprising.

                Other experiences

– slushies, ice cream and drive thru banking, watching the leaves turn colour in the fall (no seasons in Brazil), Edmonton farmer’s market, Edmonton Eskimos vs Saskatchewan Roughriders game, stained glass class in CCHS, and experiencing hoar frost and a real snowfall.

-flying with Ron (and taking control of the plane), meeting the other RYE students, South Africa friendship exchange, Terry Fox Run,  Canadian Finals Rodeo, 17^th birthday party at the Brazilian steakhouse, and playing football with the CCHS Trojans

 

-halloween dressing up as a dragon,  spending a week with other exchange students, going sledding, avoiding frostbite, Oilers game (they lost),  hitting a deer on the way back home, hitting the ditch on a rural road, watching A Christmas Carol at the Citadel Theatre, Christmas getting so many presents

-Canada Cup of Curling, not being on a beach for New Years Eve, Jasper ski trip with RYE, skiing downhill wearing the Brazilian flag, kissing a tree

-moving to the Morris & Lou Henderson’s home, playing Yatzee, going to Yellowknife with RYE, seeing the Northern Lights, jumping in show, experiencing sub zero temperatures,  bicycle recycling centre, writing on the wall of a bar in Yellowknife with other exchange students, walking on a frozen lake

-Spring –more snow, going up the Calgary tower, Banff, horse drawn carriage ride, gondola ride up the mountain, spring party with RYE and having an 80s party

-dressing up for the Rotary Gala, making dinner for the Grues, going to Vancouver, Canucks game (Oilers lost again), walking the Capalano Bridge, Vancouver aquarium

-Rocky Mountain Adventure – most amazing trip of the year. 17 kms of hikes carrying heavy backpacks, swimming in a frozen lake, rock climbing, aboriginal sanctuary

-Women’s FIFA soccer in Edmonton 1-0 Canada win!

 

What Massie will miss about Canada

                -West Edmonton Mall and the waterslide

                -Tim Horton’s and Starbucks…Timmy’s feels like home

                -Rotary meetings and speaking each week.

                -doing anything with Rotarians

                

President David thanked Massie for his presentation and sharing his experiences in Camrose with the club. There is still time for members to do something with him before he returns to Brazil in August.

 

50/50 draw - Carman missed drawing the 3 of Clubs, so the pot continues to grow next week...but Carman had the pleasure of leading the club in the 4-Way Test.
