The Buzz - September 12, 2016

Meeting called to order at 6:00pm.

 

Many guests were in attendance as this was our first joint Evening Meeting with the Daybreak Rotary Club.

 

Health of the club – very good.

 

General Announcements –

 

 a. September 13, 2016 is Executive Meeting at 5:15pm in the Board Room.

 

 b. Vote on Rotary Budget to be held at General Assembly September 19, 2016.

 

 c. Registration Night – Dan, Roger and Donna worked the booth and brochures were handed out with 5 people being interested. 

 

 d. Sheila updated our Outbound Rotary Exchange Student, Ashley White's, progress in Vienna, Austria – taking dance classes to learn the Viennese Waltz and hiking in the Alps.

 

 e. Since Tyler Weber's resignation, there is an opening for a Rotary Representative for the Air Cadets.

 

 f. Opendoor is having their Harvest Gala September 24, 2016 at the Norseman Inn at 6pm.

 

 g. Reveen is playing at the Best Western Casino and resort September 23, 2016 at 6pm.  Volunteers are needed.

 

 h. Augustana is holding their Oktoberfest September 24, 2016 at 7pm.  Tickets are $50 and proceeds to go to the Chapelsy.

 

Happy Bucks – It was a very happy group this evening, one of which is Jim Rasmussen celebrating 17 years as a Rotarian.

 

Donna Phillips introduced Mikkel Moller, our Inbound Rotary Exchange Student.  Mikkel gave a presentation of his country of Denmark.

 

Mikkel is a 16-year-old, grade 11 student.  He lives in Svendborg, Fyn, which is an island in southern Denmark.  It was discovered in the 12^th Century.  His family consists of his father, who is an Accountant, his mother, who is a Nurse and two older sisters.   Mikkel is athletic and plays handball and soccer.  He is attending Camrose Composite High School and plays on the Junior Volleyball team.  Mikkel speaks Danish, English and German.

 

Mikkel shared with us many interesting facts about his homeland.  

 

Their Currency is the Kroner (100DKK = 20CAD).

-5 C in winter, 25C in summer with 120 days of rain (Camrose had 114 days).

In the 15^th century they believed their flag fell from Heaven, which helped them win the war with Estonia.

They have one of the oldest Amusement Parks in the world being 200 years old.

Lars Lokke Rasmussen is the Prime Minister

Denmark is the highest taxed country in the world.

Their high taxes gives them FREE – healthcare, education, university (except textbooks), dental and pension.

Denmark has been a member of the European Union (est. 1951) since 1973, and there have been 14 new members since 2004.

50/50 Draw – Won by Grant Gillott who pulled the Ace of Spades earning him $472, which he donated, back to Rotary.  Dan suggested putting it into the Paul Harris Foundation.
