Presentation – Sabrina Andrews on the Youth Leadership Canoe Trip
  • Sabrina works with the Outdoor Education program at Augustana.
  • Local junior/high school students are taken on a canoeing trip on the May long weekend.
  • 7 day trip starting in Rocky Mountain House then on to Nordegg.
  • This past trip it snowed on day 3.
  • All the food is prepared fresh on the trip including baking (cinnamon buns).
  • You can judge the warmth of the day by the emergence of tank tops and shorts.
  • Most of the participants are facing a burden in their life that is having a significant impact on them.
  • At the last campfire, each of the students is asked “What are you leaving behind?” and “What are you taking back?”
  • On one of the trips, a couple of students dropped out last minute, so the funding for those students was used to purchase new PFDs (personal floatation devices).
  • The leadership team consists of Sabrina, a resource officer (police), a teacher from the school and 2-4 Augustana outdoor education students.
  • The trip provides moments of success and non-success with caring provided in both cases.

Rotary Cares Raffle winner was Ethel Friesen!

50/50 draw winner was Roy Wallace and he drew the 7 of Spades.
