Rotary Buzz – March 30, 2015

President David called the meeting to order at 1215pm.

Guests: Myles Derry, outbound to Brazil 4 years ago; Ragnar Gisslason, Camrose Legion

Health of the Club: good

A word from Myles: After completing high school on his return from Brazil he took a year of business at university but then decided to work for a year to save for travel (the exchange student curse). Work in the oilpatch led to training as a firefighter and volunteering in the Yukon. After a stint as a firefighter in Grande Prairie Myles moved back to Camrose and is now managing the butcher shop at Safeway. He is formulating a plan for a 4 or 5 month trip to Australia, New Zealand, Thailand and other eastern points.

Myles with Maciel.

A word from Maci: Awesome weekend in Calgary with other exchange students introduced his new favorite sport – lacrosse. Laser tag was cool fun. Spring break this week means Maci is free to visit your business, do odd jobs or just spend time with you. Call Lou or Morris with opportunities.

Family Violence Action Society – Routes: Tony emailed time critical information about a presentation the society would like to make to teens in our schools. It is a one person play bringing focus to the effect of private and public violence on youth through a bus rider passing the 7 previous homes he had.

Presentation, Cenotaph Project, Ragnar Gisslason, Camrose Legion member:

After the 48 Avenue Legion property was sold the cenotaph was moved to a secure storage location. In co-operation with the city a permanent home south of the Centennial Museum on 53rd Street has been designated. Contrary to general thought the cenotaph does not belong to the Legion, rather it belongs to the citizens of Camrose.

When the Rudy Swanson grounds were being developed the cenotaph that was then on the site was in danger of becoming derelict. The Camrose Legion members banded together to move the cenotaph to its 48th Avenue location.

The city and Legion estimated the cost to move and set the cenotaph in its new location is around $75,000. The city committed to funding half with the Legion responsible for the other half.

The stakes you can see at the new site are where the flagpoles will be flanking the cenotaph. Lights will illuminate but an eternal flame hasn’t been decided on as yet. The bottom section of the 18’ tall cenotaph will remember WWII, Korean Conflict, Afghanistan and other conflicts. The top will be the WWI remembrance that was given to the citizens by the IODE.

Blending in the new location among many community facilities the hope is that this will be the final move for the cenotaph. Planning is in place to have the cenotaph ready for rededication during the July 1st celebrations in Rudy Swanson Park.

Current funding commitments exceed the target but give a contingency for unforeseen expenses. The city is handling donations for simplicity and to allow the issuance of tax receipts. They have committed to give the Legion any funds received in excess of the Legion’s share of the move.

Donations are also appreciated to permit the Legion to install a lift at their new building. The $22,000 lift would be on the exterior of the building giving access to the basement that is currently only accessed via a staircase that is a barrier to many members. The lift would need an enclosure to protect it from the weather at additional cost.

President David thanked Ragnar with the presentation of a certificate for 50 doses of polio vaccine the club has provided to the Polio Plus program.
