Here are the highlights of Kara’s bio:
We look forward to getting to know our newest “Lunatic!” President Tom Richardson closed the meeting with this quote: The key to happiness, I concluded, lay in controlling the way we compare the events of our life with our expectations. It lay in being content with what we have in the present moment, rather than by striving for the intangible, "more." -- Mo Gawdet |

Luna Vista Helps With Woodland KIDS ReadsThe three Rotary clubs of Woodland partnered with Woodland United Way to the first Woodland KIDS Read event on Tuesday, May 23. Gibson and Freeman elementary school first graders were treated to a celebration of BOOKS this past week on the Woodland Community College Campus. Upon arrival, 135 children were greeted by story book characters from the Woodland Opera House. The first graders heard a story of the Good Queen Sue from storyteller, John Jorgenson, founder of the “Wyoming Reads” program, of which this Woodland event was modeled. Interactors (or young Rotarians to be,) from Pioneer High School entertained the children by acting out the story. Next, local children’s author, Sandy Holman, shared her book “We All Have Heritage” and led the children in an interactive and inspiring story about how we should embrace our unique differences while also finding commonalities. This event also hosted local celebrity readers including Rotarians Keith Rode, Pauly van Muyden, Victoria Lambert, Ruth Fitch, Roy Holmes, Raylene Ewing, Kris Kristensen, as well as retired Dr. Cleve Baker, veterinarian Julia Larson, police officer Hannah Gray, chef Toby Barajas and Woodland Fire Department Battalion Chief Eric Zane. Other guests included Associate Superintendent Stacy Spector, Woodland School Trustee Tanya Tafoya and president of Woodland Community College, Dr. Michael White. Lori Ross from United Way said, “This event was about the kids, but it was also about the community coming together to support our educators. We can’t all be reading tutors and classroom helpers, but there are many ways we can support literacy and this is one of them. We can show children that we are passionate about books, so they’re not just hearing it from teachers and librarians.” Every student left with a personal backpack filled with books including their favorite hard cover book with their name inscribed on a unique book plate on the inside cover. Kelly Timothy, first grade teacher from Gibson said, “It was a magical day focused on the power and love of reading. The event was extremely well organized and well thought out. The students absolutely loved seeing the characters come to life.” Wayne Ginsburg, Rotarian and event planning member, “We hope that this will be the first of many Woodland KIDS Read events. We’d like to partner with local businesses and other community service groups so that we can eventually invite all of Woodland first graders to participate.” Those interested in being part of Woodland KIDS Read events can contact Ross at lross@woodlandunitedway.org or any Woodland Rotarian. |

Oak Park Rotary HouseLynette Andersen from the North Sacramento Club in District 5180 shared with Luna Vista the Oak Park Rotary House. It is a single family house near UC Davis Children’s Hospital, where a family of a child may stay long term at no cost while the child receives in patient or outpatient care at the Hospital. Lynette was the initial president of the board of directors that constructed, operates and maintains the house. It was first envisioned in 2004. 7 Rotary clubs in the area sponsored and continue to support the house. They broke ground in 2007, constructed it on weekends with the help of a contractor who volunteered his time and taught Rotarians how to build a house. The first family occupied the house in 2012 with a formal partnership with UC Davis Children’s Hospital. The house was recently featured on Fox 40 honoring Rotary’s commitment to service. For more information, to donate, to volunteer, www.oakparkhouse.com |

Playmakers inspire Luna VistaGreg “Coach Roz” Roezler, Executive Director, and Chip Schumacher (both Rotarians), spoke to the club about Playmakers. Believing that coaches hold a key to building skills beyond the field, Roeszler founded The Playmakers – a non-profit organization designed to build leadership and character through sports and academics. Founded in 2009, The Playmakers began as a summer football camp integrating football skills and character lessons. Now, after 8 years, Playmakers has evolved to provide after school and summer reading programs for at-risk youth, and an annual Summer Football Academy for regional high schools. To date, Playmakers has touched the lives of more than 2,000 students and athletes. The vision for the future is to expand to more elementary schools and spread The Playmakers curriculum on a national scale. Every city and every school district has a need to reduce bullying and class behavior incidents. You can read Playmaker Stories that are showing us evidence that building character, self-confidence and leadership gives young students tools to diffuse difficult situations, think of others, and to know when to ask for help. For more information about how you can help, www.theplaymakers.org |

Rotary Foundation presentationUte did the honors of Happy $$, which created a lot of enthusiasm.
This year the District introduced new pins, to challenge donations of $100, $200, $500. These are contributions before reaching the $1,000 mark for a PHF pin.
Jane Louie and Don Jenkins gave a presentation to the club about Foundations, first the Rotary Foundation and a little about where the local Luna Vista Foundation fits in. The above example shows how the cervical cancer (PINCC) project is financed. Notice that the seven clubs (3 Woodland clubs, 3 Davis clubs and West Sac. club) started the project with $3,583 and remaining contributions made it up to a total of $78,875. That is how Rotary works. Our contributions to the Rotary International Foundation get used again for projects like these: $31,792 plus the District adding another $30,000. This project became a Global Grant. There also are District grants, mostly for local projects.

Message from DG Laura DayWe are on the brink of setting a District 5160 record in giving to the Rotary Foundation. Specifically the Annual Fund, the fund that pays us back to fund our local and international grants. To date, we have sent $464,000 to The Rotary Foundation Annual Fund. $481,000 will break the previous record. $500,000 blows past that record to a new milestone. We have 40 days and 40 nights left, like Noah and the ark, to post $36,000. And we are on pace to do it. Kenya Smiles is a great project on its own, but it was created to give us the opportunity to actively demonstrate what our Rotary dollars do for us. The $50,000 we raised $10 at a time, turned into a $195,000 grant. That message has resonated with our very sharp membership. Our current level of giving to The Rotary Foundation shows us that your Kenya Smiles grant, on all fronts, was a big success. Thank you for supporting it and making this happen. These are mostly community projects, should you want to encourage donations by citing examples of how our contributions to The Rotary Foundation help us here at home. And then there are the International Grants.....Thank you, LD |
