One member said "it's been a long time since we met"! Well, it's just Thanksgiving Club break.  Our guest speaker at our club meeting this morning was Pastor Henry Nyamweya from Nakuru, Kenya. Pastor Henry shared about Kaptembwa slum and how his love and compassion led to his zeal to educate and feed the poor children and train women to be independent.

Thank you, Cayucan Rotarians, especially Andy Lilley and Michele Lilley for a job well-done! The pancakes were well received and so were the soft and crispy sausages that tasted like bacon. The kids smiled, the adults laughed, and we got together as a community. Cayucos Rotary also wishes to thank all who came to support this event. All donations received will benefit Cayucos Elementary School.

From 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., Cayucan Rotarians cooked and served pancakes and sausages; made and served coffee, hot chocolate, orange juice and mimosas to Cayucos community and supporters. The members worked hard, tirelessly and efficiently, and cleaned up quickly in about half an hour.  A big thank you to Dan Costley of Morro Bay Rotary for making all the fluffy and yummy pancakes.

Does anyone know why a small town like Cayucos need 3 water purveyors? At our club's August 2nd meeting, George Brett, President of Morro Rock Mutual Water Company captured our attention on water, usage and why Cayucos never formed a Community Services District. Club President Sherry Sim had the pleasure to present Rotary District 5240's 'People-of-Action' Award to Abbie Lynch for her enthusiasm and new project ideas. President-Elect-Nominee Monika Gottlieb reported proudly that 120 golf-cart raffle tickets had been sold; only 270 more to sell. We had too much fun when immediate Past President Gina Spencer tried to turn our game of "2 Truths & 1 Lie" into "4 Truths and 3 Lies!" Ah ha!

Cayucos Rotary is pleased to welcome Toni Legras of Beachside Rentalsand Doyle Daniel as our club's two newest members.

Mother Theresa, an exemplary forerunner who served all her life, said it well,
""Peace begins with a smile,
If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other.
Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love.
Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless.
Yesterday is gone. Tomorrow has not yet come. We have only today. Let us begin.
Let us always meet each other with a smile, for the smile is the beginning of love.
We shall never know all the good that a simple smile can do.""

Let's us smile with our hearts as we serve together.

Cayucean Rotarians were up and early on Labor Day to serve pancakes to kids, friends, residents and visitors at the Cayucos Vets Hall between 7 am to 11am. The pancake breakfast was free to the community and donations accepted.  Proceeds raised benefit the Cayucos Elementary and Middle School. Cayucos Rotary is very appreciative to Dorn's Original Breakers Cafe for donating the pancake batter and sausages. Dorn's Original Breakers Restaurant had been an ardent supporter of Cayucos Rotary's past three years' pancake events, annual Masquerade ball fundraiser and projects.

One of our best "roasting" - we teased, joked and cajoled with Club President Gil and he didn't flinch! Totally unscripted; each member spoke from his and her heart and toasted, er, roasted Pres. Gil Igleheart! We wined and ate great food. Never thought we got actors and comedians among our group. We laughed, laughed and laughed some more.

Gladys' potato salad was a hit, quiche featuring homegrown veggies, delightful baked beans, yummy shrimp cocktails, plus sweet lemon bars, chocolate birthday cake and more were relished till empty plates were left.  Of course, what's a social without wine and beer....and we couldn't have a better setting by the blue ocean and crashing of the waves....

Thanks to all for the hard work that went into the fundraiser last Saturday night. The dinner dance was a big success surpassing prior years' fundraising receipts and a good time was had by all. A full report will be given at next week's meeting.
Numerous club accomplishments for the year were recited by our president. For a small club, we have much to be proud of including four new additions to our ranks so far this year, and another in the process of transferring in. This will complete our president's goal of adding five new members during her tenure.
Voted to purchase 10 new vests at a cost of $15 each.
Will put the Harlem Ambassador Travelling Show on hold at this time.
Friday, 4/27 is beach clean-up with the elementary school kids participating.
Voted to spend $100 to add to the Food Bank bags to buy peanut butter due to a reported shortage.
Our guest, Asst DG Patrick Hampton, spoke about the District's role and how it supports the clubs.

The holiday spirit is alive in Cayucos as the merchants prepare for the annual community wide Christmas Party to take place on December 9th.  In addition to being able to shop for all of those one-of-a-kind beautiful and unique Cayucos treasures on that day, visitors will find many fun activities including face painting, a visit from Santa, and two horse drawn carriages to keep you in the spirit of the season.  This is an event not to be missed!

We received a wonderful overview of EcoRotary from their President as he explained the club’s commitment to the reuse-reduce-recycle programs.  They help sponsor a park and golf course in Morro Bay to keep them at zero waste.  Much of what the club does is educate people in how to clean up our environment.  EcoRotary partners with Rotaract and Interact.

Women’s Shelter fundraiser to be held Saturday, 11/19 from 10:00 till noon at Cayucos Elementary School.  Bring new or gently used clothing to be auctioned off, then traded.  Entry fee only $5.  Great fun guaranteed.  Come one, come all!

Thanks to the support of our club, Peer Mediation at Cayucos Elementary School is proving to be a big success.  Students in grades 1-5 are Peacekeepers and grades 6-8 are Peer Mediators.  All students are doing well in their roles.  Congratulations, students!

Jim Brescia, Superintendent at Cayucos Elementary School gave good insight into what it takes to make a school run as successfully as this one.  He spoke about revenues, expenses, shortfalls, and the importance of grants and the assistance they receive from service clubs like Rotary.  Most of all, Jim voiced his appreciation of the high caliber staff and teachers that he feels so fortunate to have onboard.

District Governor Wade Nomura spoke at our 10/27/11 meeting and inspired us all!  Where do you find that AHA Rotary moment?  Wade’s first was in Mexico while doing a water project.  Water, the most basic of all human needs and our ability to provide that need, and having the recipients give you that big THANK YOU.  Yes, AHA moment!  This is why we are in Rotary!  Wade provided more insight into his experience with Rotary opportunities to serve humanity and the Rotary moments received in return.  What a delight it was to listen to Wade speak!  If you have never experienced Wade Nomura’s speaking gift, seek it out.  You will be glad you did!

Speaker Victor Montalban, son of late actor Ricardo Montalban, gave insight into the intriguing life of the much beloved film star who we enjoyed in a wide variety of both big screen and television credits, everything from Mr Roarke in Fantasy Island to Star Trek ll: The Wrath of Khan to Spy Kids.  The actor was not someone who had things handed to him, rather was one who worked long and hard to achieve his goals.  He was very proud of his heritage, of Spanish descent, born in Mexico City, then came to Hollywood to make his fortune in acting.  Victor is one of the actor’s four children now retired and enjoying life here on the Central Coast.

Speaker, Lorie French, is in the commercial fishing industry here in Cayucos where they currently fish for black cod, also called black sable.  She had rope to show how lines are tied, knotted, and hooked.  Lorie informed us of the need for all boats to have an observer on board at all times to ensure rules with the Nature Conservancy are observed.  She and her husband are, at heart, crabbers.  She produced a crab trap, hand made by her husband, used to trap the crabs we enjoy in our restaurants.  It is hard work, but they love the life.  Bottom line, BUY LOCAL FISH!

Christine Rogers, Program Manager from Energy Watch Partnership/Economic Strategy Implementation in SLO County spoke about the challenges that offset the joys of living in SLO County, called the happiest place on earth by a TV celebrity.  Her organization is a county wide public/private organization that does economic impact analysis with affiliates and partners with local entities.  In a recent economic strategic project, more than 100 senior business leaders gathered over several months to develop a strategic plan.  They looked at opportunity vs challenges and what to focus on.  Six clusters were identified:  1) Building design & construction 2) Green energy 3) Knowledge & innovation 4) Specialized manufacturing 5) uniquely SLO county 6) Publicity.  Heavy emphasis is on green programs, many right here in Cayucos.

Meeting came to order by President, Liz Weeth at 7:05 AM.

  • President Liz introduced visiting Rotarians Jim Brescia, Paso Robles and Mary Humphrey, Past President, Gilroy Sunrise.
  • Liz W and Sherry went to the Group 11 international service meeting.  Looking for $8,000 funding.  Matching grant proposal presented.
  • District Governor will be coming on October 27th to visit and to exchange flags.  All members are encouraged to be present and support this exciting and important event.
  • Liz G introduced Bill Callahan, District Manager for the Cayucos Sanitary District.  Bill enlightened us on the important current state of the sewer plant issues, critical to all of us, since the plant is jointly owned by Morro Bay and Cayucos.  He explained that it is past time to update it because every time it rains, there are problems, including infiltration.  A new plant needs to be build, oddly enough, according to studies, a smaller one than the existing one, but the one of the big issues is where to place it.  The next meeting will be at 6:00PM, 2nd Thursday in August at the Vets Hall in Cayucos.  Everyone is encouraged to attend to have your voice heard, however, sooner than that, you should go online at www.morro-bay.ca.us/ to get involved.

  • Visiting Rotarian, Vera Wallin from the Los Osos club was introduced.
  • Liz Gray gave a report on where we stand with Creative Mediation.  It is a three year commitment and we will be starting year two at the start of the new school year.  A refresher course will be given to the members who participated in the program last year.  The Cayucos School has reported that they are pleased with the benefits they are receiving from the program.
  • District Simplified Grant meeting, Monday, July 11th
  • Judy Salamacha, visiting Rotarian and today’s guest speaker.  Judy is a writer who came to the Central Coast eight years ago from Bakersfield.  Here she joined the Morro Bay Rotary of which she is now a past President.  One of Judy’s passions is the spelling bee at Cayucos Elementary School, which she was instrumental in getting started.  She would love to see our club in the audience when they hold their spelling bees, as it adds another level of interest and excitement to have more than just parents in attendance when they are competing.  Another huge passion is the Central Coast Writers’ Conference which she is intensely involved with.  It will be held 9/16-17, anyone can attend, even if you want to self publish.  The cost is only $139.  There will be an amazing array of writers on hand during the workshops to learn from.  Flyers were distributed.
  • Meeting adjourned 8:00 AM.

We never know how high we are
Till we are asked to rise
And then if we are true to plan
Our statures touch the skies --

The Heroism we recite
Would be a normal thing
Did not ourselves the Cubits warp
For fear to be a King --

Emily Dickinson
