Rotary Club of Cayucos-Seaside Thursday, September 3rd, 2009 Call to order: 7:09 am In attendance: Pam, Liz W., Liz G., Dan, Jessica, Gary, Caz, Emily, Brenda, Linda, Joyce, Sherry, Craig, Sherry, Kat, Hilary. 16 members Pledge Invocation Club Business: ï‚· New generation month- responsibility of each Rotarian to prepare all young people up to the age of 30 by improving their life skills ï‚· October 22nd is dark, resume regular meetings on the 29th. ï‚· September 24th, 2009 next BOD meeting ï‚· October 25th, 2009 BOD meeting ï‚· September 17th is the Club Social at Emily and Craig's house ï‚· DG to visit our club on November 5th, 2009 ï‚· Group 11 tickets for Morro Bay 50/50 drawing need to turn in by the end of September ï‚· Basic PRLS training on October 10th in Cambria ï‚· District Conference October 23-25 in Ventura. ï‚· Water conference in Thousand Oaks ï‚· 20th anniversary since the Rotary accepted women in Rotary! ï‚· Liz passed out ballots to nominate for her presidency for year 2010-2011 due by the end of the month. ï‚· Guest Speaker: Tim McLean founder of "Butts in Cans" jeweler, and Cayucos Citizen of the year for 2009. ï‚· Business since 1977, Tim designs and makes jewelry at his business in downtown Cayucos. ï‚· Jewelry making has changed a lot due to computers and technology ï‚· Making a mold is important because then you can make duplicates off that one. ï‚· Tim showed many tools he uses for finishing, molding, setting for gemstones. ï‚· Keep an eye and check your own jewelry at the prong level because they wear down over time. ï‚· Gold and platinum are the most manipulative metals. ï‚· Tim got involved when he took a part-time job in college and after being exposed to it, he set up a shop as a hobby, but after moving to Cayucos, he expanded his hobby into a business. ï‚· Tim also writes music and plays the guitar. ï‚· Tim can make an item in about two days from start to finish. ï‚· The "Please Butt In" program was started 3 years ago after noticing butts in front of his shop and accumulating butts on a regular business. ï‚· Each summer about 2 pounds per container each month are collected. ï‚· Tim is working on a new project that our club might be interested in. It's time to outfit the pier with life rings. In the past, vandalism has been the reason why they have not been maintained. The cost is expensive, but used ones are $53.00 dollars. Coat it in pine tar is one idea to discourage theft. ï‚· You can see why with his flourishing business and love of the community is the reason Tim is so important to Cayucos! ï‚· 50/50 drawing ï‚· September 26th is airport day in San Luis Obispo ï‚· This Sunday is the BBQ at the Vets Hall. Tickets are $9.00 to honor the fireman. 11-3. ï‚· Hilary is looking for talent at the community center in Los Osos. Monday the 14th at 6:00 is audition. ï‚· Meeting adjourned @ 8:05 a.m.
