Morro Bay and Los Osos joining hands to celebrate our nation’s 250th birthday.
This July 4, the float created by Los Osos Rotarian Ted Haines, is titled “Sea Meets History: A California Crossing”. The following description is created by Cayucos Rotary’s Club President Jen Gaviola, also Superintendent of Cayucos Elementary School District.
— Inspired by Emanuel Leutze’s iconic Washington Crossing the Delaware, our float reimagines this defining moment in American history through the unique spirit of California’s Central Coast. Instead of the icy Delaware River, our crew navigates the Pacific, where a majestic California bear proudly carries the American flag alongside coastal pelicans in a handcrafted wooden boat.
— This creative interpretation celebrates the strength, resilience, and unity that have shaped our nation for 250 years while honoring the natural beauty and character of Cayucos. The California bear symbolizes courage and the Golden State, while the pelicans represent our treasured coastal community.
— Built with approximately 80% recycled and repurposed materials, the float reflects our commitment to environmental stewardship—demonstrating that creativity, sustainability, and patriotism can work hand in hand; augmenting Rotary International’s 7th Area of Focus in Environment.
— Created through the partnership of the Cayucos, Los Osos, and Morro Bay Rotary Clubs, this float celebrates community, service, and the enduring American spirit.
