This Weeks Funny?A Pastor goes to the dentist for a set of false teeth. The first Sunday after he gets his new teeth, he talks for only eight minutes. The second Sunday, he talks for only ten minutes. The following Sunday, he talks for 2 hours and 48 minutes. The congregation had to mob him to get him down from the pulpit and they asked him what happened. The Pastor explains the first Sunday his gums hurt so bad he couldn't talk for more than 8 minutes. The second Sunday his gums hurt too much to talk for more than 10 minutes. But, the third Sunday, he put his wife's' teeth in by mistake and he couldn't shut up. I love it when I make you smile...and I KNOW you are smiling! A Pastor goes to the dentist for a set of false teeth. The first Sunday after he gets his new teeth, he talks for only eight minutes. Top Ten Reasons To Join RotaryTop 10 Reasons to Join Rotary
Professional Networking A founding principle of Rotary was to meet periodically to enjoy camaraderie and enlarge one’s circle of business and professional acquaintances. As the oldest service organization in the world, Rotary club members represent a cross-section of the community’s owners, executives, managers, political leaders, and professionals – people who make decisions and influence policy.
Service Opportunities Club members have many opportunities for humanitarian service, both locally and internationally. Service programs address such concerns as health care, hunger, poverty, illiteracy, and the environment. Rotarians experience the fulfillment that comes from giving back to the community.
International Awareness With more than 32,000 clubs in over 200 countries & geographical areas, Rotarians gain an understanding of humanitarian issues through international service projects and exchange programs. One of Rotary’s highest objectives is to build goodwill and peace throughout the world.
Friendship Rotary was founded on fellowship, an ideal that remains a major attraction of membership today. Club members enjoy the camaraderie with like-minded professionals, and club projects offer additional opportunities to develop enduring friendships. Rotary club members who travel have friendly contacts in almost every city in the world.
Good Citizenship Weekly Rotary club programs keep members informed and motivated to make a difference in the community, nation, and world.
Family Foundations Rotary sponsors some of the world’s largest youth exchange, educational exchange, and scholarship programs. Rotary clubs provide innovative training opportunities and mentoring for young leaders and involve family members in a wide range of social and service activities.
Entertainment Social activities give Rotarians a chance to let loose and have fun. Every Rotary club and district hosts parties and activities that offer diversions from today’s demanding professional and personal schedules. Conferences, conventions, assemblies, and social events provide entertainment as well as Rotary information, education, and service.
Ethical Environment Encouraging high ethical standards in one’s profession and respect for all worthy vocations has been a hallmark of Rotary from its earliest days. In their business and professional lives, Rotarians abide by--- The Four-Way Test: Of the things we think, say or do: 1) Is it the TRUTH? 2) Is it FAIR to all concerned? 3) Will it BUILD GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? 4) Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
Leadership Development Rotary is an organization of successful professionals. Team building, fundraising, public speaking, planning, organization, and communication are just a sampling of the leadership skills that club members can exercise and enhance. Being a Rotary leader provides further experience in learning how to motivate, inspire, and guide others.
Diversity in Membership Rotary’s classification system ensures that a club’s membership represents a variety of the community’s professional men and women, including leaders in business, industry, the arts, government, sports, the military, and religion. Rotary clubs are nonpolitical, nonreligious, and open to all cultures, races, and creeds. |

City of Bellflower DayBellflower Rotary Club provided the Fireworks for the City of Bellflower Day at Hollywood Sports. Giovanni Egidio, prospective Bellflower Rotarian, hosted the City of Bellflower Day on July 3 from 12noon to 10pm for citizens of Bellflower. Over 350 participated during the day with paintballing, rock-climbing, picnicing and fireworks. The Rotarians met at 5pm for a picnic dinner of steaks and baked potatoes. Howard Davis, Jim Murrin, Rick Searey, and Dean Severson were like little boys blowing up the "safe and sane" fireworks. At one point, the table covering started on fire, but thanks to the quick action of the Hollywood Sports employees, it was quickly put out. Thanks so much to Giovanni for providing the venue. This is definitely an activity we need to do annually. |

Only in America
The Rotary meeting of September 11, 2008, was filled with interesting and exciting events, and guests. A full house greeted guest speaker, John Mirassou of the Redondo Beach Rotary Club, as he gave an overview of his book "Only in America" about his adventures and misadventures with friends on a 17-foot Whaler (boat) for 6,100 miles in the waterways of America without actually being in the Ocean. When asked what he would say if one of his sons decided to do something so daring, what would he say, "Can I go too!" John stayed and autographed his book for those purchasing, and noted that part of the sale of the books go to RI international, and to other worthwhile projects.

School Shopping Event
"GOOD MORNING KMART SHOPPERS!!!" Saturday, September 13th began at 7AM at the Bellflower KMart Store on Rosecrans. Bellflower Rotary members and spouses(Chicks) in full force with Caring Connections proceeded to organize and match up (55) kids with adults to shop for school clothes. This annual event grows and grows. It was like something out of a 'Reality Show' where everyone has a basket and is running for the best bargains to load up their carts. Men who never shop for their own kids, or for themselves were helping kids of all ages select shoes, clothes and underwear. It was great fun, and very rewarding. There were so many kids, that Caring Connections also brought reinforcements in the form of kids from Americorp. These kids really know how to shop, and did a great job making every dollar count for the younger kids.

On Monday, August 11, 2008, Bellflower Rotary in conjunction with the Bellflower Sister City Association attended a fundraiser at Frantone's Italian Restaurant in Norwalk where 25% of the proceeds from the evenings food purchases would be realized as a donation. Bellflower Rotary was the founder of the Sister City project with Los Mochis over 50 years ago. It is now a city function, and a group from Los Mochis will be in Bellflower on October 11th, as part of the annual exchange program. Several members of Bellflower Rotary are active in the Sister City Association, and have traveled to Los Mochis with the group. |

Summer Street Fest
Summer Street Fest
Bellflower Rotary Club assisted the city by keeping the streets clean during the Summer Street Fest. This year, Rotary volunteered to help out during the first and last events. On July 10, a number of Rotarians met at Johnny Rebs restaurant for dinner. After enjoying a good meal, it was off to work with a broom and dust pan.
There was music, arts and crafts, a farmer's market, outdoor dining and kids' games and activities. The music at this event was classic rock and was enjoyed by a large amount of dancers in front of the stage. It was a huge success and the streets were cleaner when we left than they were when |

Concert Under the Stars Bellflower Rotary attended the Concert Under the Stars at the Hollywood Bowl on June 17. We enjoyed the music of Burt Baccarat and later were lead by Shirley Jones in a review of the music of popular movie. The fireworks were awesome and included the Rotary wheel. Bellflower Rotary volunteered at the event, directing traffic and staffing the HELP table. We had a great night under the stars and enjoyed the fun and fellowship. |
