More than 140 Bellflower Unified Students Received Free  Eye Exams Through The Rotary Club of Bellflower.

A truly wonderful event for the underprivileged
children and their parents. 

Our "Holiday Spectacular Party" was a bunch of fun!

Today we were at Washington Elementary School
pre-screening all the kids the school nurse didn't
last month for our "Vision To Learn" event next Month.

What a great evening we had with the ladies and their kids!

Our speaker today was Ron Taylor, Superintendent of Valley Christian Schools.
 

We were honored to have Rick Mendoza as our speaker this week.

We just had to get him to come up long enough to share his world with us.

Our speaker this week was Kate Rosloff from
the Rotary Rose Parade Float Committee.

This weeks meeting featured Cerritos College's 
Professor Sue Parsons and Coordinator of
Community Relations - Public Affairs Toni Grijalva
​speaking on the Teacher TRAC Program.

This week we had Jeff Westrup bringing some of his best
representatives from Valley Christian School.  

Our speaker today is Dwayne Moore.  Dwayne is 
Supervisor of Christian Outreach Action Center
in Long Beach.

This week we will have a talk and demonstration from

Duncan YO-YO West Coast Representatives.

Our Speaker to day is Craig MacDonald.

 Craig has gone over the Sierra Nevada Mountains in a
covered wagon, shot the rapids of the American River, and
 been keynote speaker at national conventions and universities.

Today he told us about "Yosemite's Unknown Heroine."

Our Back-To-School shopping event
  was held at Kmart Saturday. 

Kit Wilke spoke to us about the homeless problem.
We also exchanged some Club Properties !?! 
Who said Bellflower can't be more than "Friendly" ?!?

City Manager - Jeff Stewart spoke to us today about some
of the outstanding​ changes coming to Bellflower.

We had a wonderful speaker this week.
None other than Jim Kelly, the just retired
Chief of Security for The Marriott Hotel Chain,
Pacific Division.

Tonight we all had a GREAT time at The Rib Trader!!!

Jean Wilford gave us a new insight into the "real" history of the internet.  WOW!!! we never
new?.?  I guess Mr. Gore has egg on his face...again.

Our District "The Rotary Foundation" Chair Person and past DG  was our speaker today.
He brought us up to speed on some of the new changes in the Rotary Grant Programs.
Future Vision, started three and one half years ago, is gone.  It is here and now!
Fifty-one clubs are certified(of which we are one) and may participate in the grants programs.
Up to three clubs can partner up for District Grants.

Bill Zastrow announced a $100 million donation to "PolioPlus" by Michael R. Bloomberg.

Connie Hui was our speaker. She told us many things about herself.

She was eight years old when her family moved hear from San-tau, China.

San-tau is in the South-Eastern part of China. Connie speaks three languages in addition to English. They are Chiu Chow (her families primary language), Cantonese, and Mandarin. She loves to cook all styles of Chinese and Vietnamese She would love to cook for us sometime.

We awarded two $1000 Vocational Scholarships at Cerritos College this morning.  

This meeting should be dubbed "The Meeting of the Fines."

Mike Lundgren:      $5.00         for not at meeting. 

Niko Anagnostou:  $75.00        for not singing and didn't like the $5.00 fine.

Steve Litzinger:      $75.00       offered to get Niko up to $75.

for our 2nd Annual Christmas Party.

 Linton Morgan Our Assistant DG spoke to us today.  He spoke to us about the "My Brother's Keeper" program that they have at his Inglewood club.  Basicly each member is responsible for another.  It seems to me like a very good way to live life in general.

Jean then had us sing the "National Anthem."  She told us of the history of it's commencement.
Quite a walk down the lane of pridefulness.

USED BOOK DRIVE

Bellflower Rotary Club is holding a used book drive for the Clifton M. Brakensiek Library. Bring your used books to Club on Thursday so we can share them with our community.

ROTARY CHICKS BOARD MEETING

Fundraiser for Bellflower/Los Mochis Sister City Project

On Monday, August 11, 2008, Bellflower Rotary in conjunction with the Bellflower Sister City Association attended a fundraiser at Frantone's Italian Restaurant in Norwalk where 25% of the proceeds from the evenings food purchases would be realized as a donation.  Bellflower Rotary was the founder of the Sister City project with Los Mochis over 50 years ago.  It is now a city function, and a group from Los Mochis will be in Bellflower on October 11th, as part of the annual exchange program.  Several members of Bellflower Rotary are active in the Sister City Association, and have traveled to Los Mochis with the group.

Summer Street Fest

Bellflower Rotary Club assisted the city by keeping the streets clean during the Summer Street Fest. This year, Rotary volunteered to help out during the first and last events.  On July 10, a number of Rotarians met at Johnny Rebs restaurant for dinner. After enjoying a good meal, it was off to work with a broom and dust pan.

There was music, arts and crafts, a farmer's market, outdoor dining and kids' games and activities. The music at this event was classic rock and was enjoyed by a large amount of dancers in front of the stage. It was a huge success and the streets were cleaner when we left than they were when

Concert Under the Stars

Bellflower Rotary attended the Concert Under the Stars at the Hollywood Bowl on June 17.  We enjoyed the music of Burt Baccarat and later were lead by Shirley Jones in a review of the music of popular movie. The fireworks were awesome and included the Rotary wheel. Bellflower Rotary volunteered at the event, directing traffic and staffing the HELP table.  We had a great night under the stars and enjoyed the fun and fellowship.

DONATIONS TO THE LOS ANGELES MISSION

Bellflower Rotarians donated care packages to the Valley Christian Interact Club to present at the Los Angeles Mission. We provided more than 200 hygiene packets to the street residents. The Interact Club serves at the Los Angeles Mission every Wednesday, meeting with the residents and leading the Chapel Service at the Mission.

Bellflower Rotary Foundation donated $1098 to Caring Connections. This money will be used to purchase shoes for needy Junior High and High School students in the Bellflower Unified School District.

Bellflower Rotary Serves the Armed Services

In conjunction with the Armed Forces YMCA, The Rotary Club of Bellflower provided 260 military families with toys, formula, diapers, baby wipes, blankets and clothes. Donations for the event were received from District 5280, Rotaract, LA Quilters Guild, Long Beach Food Finders and Urban Taskforce.

The Rotary Club of Bellflower Has Met Its Goal!!!

Thanks to all the generous Rotarians for their donations of books. This week we achieved our goal. We have collected 1062 books!!!  The books will be delivered to the Convention Center on Saturday to be part of the Tower of Books to help achieve the Guiness World's Record.
