Thank you to Those "Freezin' for a Reason![]() The 45th Annual BEL Rotary Polar Plunge is in the books and what an incredible success it was! Retro TV characters from the Smurfs, to the Simpsons to the Flintstones and Mr. Rogers made an appearance and raised more than $50,000 for local charities and the work of BEL Rotary. The local Rotary Club Presidents took to the icy waters. Ken Seim, Peterborough Rotary Club President, Dean Ostrander Kawartha Rotary Club President and BEL’s own President Shannon Junkin made a splash as the beloved characters of Gilligan’s Island. President Shannon jumped for “Jude’s Joy”, an inclusive playground to be built on the beautiful Ennismore waterfront. Play is a fundamental aspect of childhood and child development, and supports cognitive, physical, social and emotional growth. “Every child has the right to a barrier free, inclusive playground”, said Junkin. “As I watch my own nephews grow and develop I can’t imagine what it would be like if they were unable to participate and engage in play. Inclusivity is important and a fundamental of Rotary. When everyone is included it adds to the strength of our society. This playground will make a difference”. First time plunger Kara Murray was the not only the youngest plunger but also raised the most money as an individual! She took the jump with mom Jay who was doing her third jump. She made the plunge in honour of her Nana, Mary Lou Tryan who has been fighting a courageous battle with cancer. “Nana’s journey has not been easy, but day in and day out she fights this horrible disease. I was so proud to be able to do this for my Nan”. Kara and her mom jumped in support of The Canadian Cancer Society. The best costume winners are the “loveable” Smurfs, the team from RE/MAX Hallmark and the most money raised by a team was the “Lead Slingin’ Dippers: from Savage Arms. The Gift of Christmas![]() It is never too young to make a difference. Future Rotarians shop for the perfect gift!! It has been another challenging year, and the joys of the holiday season that so many of us take for granted can be elusive to some of our neighbours. Again this year, BEL Rotary is able to provide the gift of Christmas to some families in our community. BEL Rotarians and friends connect with families through the local schools and purchase, wrap and deliver toys, games, books and clothing specific to the interessts and needs of the children. In addition, shoppers provide the makings of a festive dinner with all the trimmings, food items to help ease the pressure of the holiday season – and of course a few extra treats! It seems it is getting more and more difficult for families to make ends meet and many in our community have to choose between paying the rent, buying food or providing the magic of Christmas. “It is heartwarming to be able to make a small difference in people’s lives”, said shopper Anita Lamb. “It is easy to take for granted our many blessings and the opportunity to give back even a little is truly an honour”. There were tears of joy and hugs of appreciation as the hampers of food and gifts were delivered. It is thanks to the generosity of our community that the BEL Rotary Club is able to take on projects such as this. We extend a special thank you to John’s Independent grocer in Bridgenorth, The Lakefield Legion and Doane Grant Thornton LLP for your generous donations to this project. As always, thank you to Terry McQuitty and the Lakefield Herald for promoting the work of BEL Rotary. You make a difference!! |
BEL Rotary Honours Its Own![]() It is monetary gifts of the Rotary Foundation that make our work possible. The Paul Harris Fellowship recognizes contributions of US$1000 to the foundation, either by individuals or on behalf of individuals. At the annual Paul Harris Dinner Monday night, the BEL Club had the honour of recognizing two valued members with a Paul Harris Fellow for their incredible contributions. Dorothy Menton has given to Rotary for more than 25 years. She has travelled to Nigeria and Pakistan to give life saving polio drops, has worked in Cambodia to bring English education to rural children and is most recently working to support a children’s village in Panama. She works with club members to promote understanding of and contributions to the Rotary Foundation. Her kindness and friendship make the club strong. Congratulations Dorothy. In the short period of time she has been with BEL Rotary, Mary Lou Tryan has made significant contributions. She has been instrumental in helping the club to pivot to its new meeting location. She listens, sees a need and takes steps to make things happen. She has worked in our food security programs, taken leadership of the “Sunshine for Seniors” and the purchase and distribution of books to local schools and libraries promoting peace. Congratulations Mary Lou. The BEL Club also had the bittersweet honour of recognizing a member posthumously. Don Thornton was the quintessential Rotarian. He dedicated his time and resources to making the club stronger and the community a better place to be. He was involved in all aspects of Rotary life and a very strong supporter of the Rotary Foundation. Don was recognized with a Paul Harris +7, meaning that 8000USD were donated by him or on his behalf to the Rotary Foundation. The recognition was accepted by his daughter and son in law, Deb and Bruce Webster. Congratulations to all of our Paul Harris fellows and thank you for your dedication to making the world a better place. |

They were recognized as District 7010 members of the Polio Plus Society at our recent Foundation dinner. Their annual pledge of $100 CAN to fight this disease is their legacy to the children of the world. Brian and Dorothy have worked tirelessly supporting Rotary's polio eradication initiative and this is one more testament to their work. |

It was a time for connecting with old friends and making new ones, sharing ideas and inspiration and being reminded of the power of our incredible organization. Now more than ever the world needs Rotary – an agent of peace, goodwill and understanding. |

Chemong School Green Classroom![]() About 20 years ago, under the leadership of Architect and member Christopher Tworkowski, BEL Rotary designed and built the Green Classroom at Chemong Public School. Even since it has been a favorite location for students to gather, learn and appreciate the natural environment. On the weekend, Rotarians partnered with the school community to weed eat, rake and in general, spruce up the area. They also assessed the classroom for future maintenance including painting and replacing some shingles and boards. This work will take place in the early spring. The environment is one of the Rotary Foundation’s area of focus. “It is so important for children to have a place where they can be outside, understand nature and learn how to be stewards of the environment”, said mother and Rotarian Courtney Usborne. |
Meet Your Match Selwyn![]() Rotary is a great way to volunteer and make a difference in our community. Best of all it is fun! BEL Rotarians joined other community groups as part of the Meet Your Match Selwyn! It was an opportunity to interact with potential volunteers and have lots of laughs. A Polio Free World: Making the Dream Come True![]() On October 24th, the world will celebrate World Polio Day. This recognition was established by Rotary International to commemorate the birth of Jonas Salk, the medical researcher who led the first team to develop a vaccine against polio. He developed the inactivated polio virus vaccine which came into use in 1955. Albert Sabine then developed the oral vaccine that came into use in 1961. Rotary has been working to eradicate polio for more than 35 years. As a founding partner of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, Rotary and its partners have reduced polio cases by more than 99.99 percent since the first project to vaccinate children in the Philippines in 1979. At that time more than 125 countries were endemic and more than 350000 children a year succumbed to the scourge of this horrible disease. Incredible progress has been made thanks to Rotary International, the World Health Organization and the support of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Of the three wild polio viruses two have been eradicated. Recently a new oral vaccine has been developed that does not mutate as easily and therefore there are fewer cases of vaccine derived polio. Currently only two countries have the wild Polio virus, Afghanistan and Pakistan. Rotary and its partners continue to work in these countries once and for all to eradicate the scourge of this horrible disease. We cannot stop! The infrastructure created by Rotary and its partners has not only been used for the distribution of the polio vaccine, but has also been used to help eradicate other chronic diseases such as Measles, Ebola and most recently Covid-19. The BEL Rotary Club has been a proud partner and contributor to this world wide effort. Rotarians Brian and Dorothy Menton have travelled to Nigeria and Pakistan to deliver the lifesaving drops to children in rural and often unsafe areas. In their words “No child should get Polio, there is a vaccine. We just need to get it to the children”. |
Governor Visit![]() It was a wonderful evening of fun and fellowship at the Tri Club dinner, to hear from our District Governor Stephen Wilkinson. DG Steve inspired us by reminding us about the incredible work of Rotary in our district: our role in promoting peace, our tremendous work toward Polio eradication and the many projects at home and across the globe. The local clubs, BEL Rotary, Peterborough Kawartha Rotary, Peterborough Rotary and Peterborough Rotaract enjoyed the hospitality of “Right to Heal” and host Peggy Shaughnessy. It was a great opportunity to meet with our fellow Rotarians, although the BEL Club did notice that some of our name badges went missing. Will this be the beginning of another adventure with our friends in the local clubs? Stay tuned!! |
Bringing Thanksgiving to Local Families![]() For many of us, Thanksgiving is a time of autumn colours, the beauty of nature and gatherings with family and friends over dinner complete with roasted turkey, pumpkin pie and all the trimmings. With food costs soaring and families experiencing economic loss and uncertainty celebrations such as this are elusive. Food insecurity touches many families, and1 in 3 who access food banks are children. BEL Rotarians with the support of John Le Quang owner of John’s Independent Grocer in Bridgenorth, brought Thanksgiving to some of our local residents. Rotarians purchased, packaged and delivered all of the makings for a turkey dinner, treats and other staples to those experiencing challenging times. “It was overwhelming to see the reaction of the families. One dad couldn’t express his gratitude enough when we delivered his hamper”, said shopper Anita Lamb. “It really brought home how much we have to be thankful for”. It is thanks to the generosity of our community that the BEL Rotary Club is able to take on projects such as this. John’s Independent grocer in Bridgenorth is a valued partner. He donated the turkeys and shopped for one of our families.. As always, thank you to Terry McQuitty and the Lakefield Herald for promoting the work of BEL Rotary. You make a difference!! |
Chemong Lake Triathlon![]() On August 11th, participants swam, biked and ran to participate in the Chemong Lake Triathlon. Thanks to the organization of Race Director Ryan Logan, the sponsors and volunteers, the event went off without a hitch. BEL Rotary started the event 30 years ago and after running it for several years “passed the baton” so to speak. To this day the club is an active partner in the event and the beneficiary. Money raised supports works such as the Adopt a Family Christmas projects, the purchase of books for schools and support for Community Care. |
Happy Birthday Bridgenorth![]() What a weekend it was! BEL Rotarians had the honour of joining our community partners on August 10th to bring the Bridgenorth 200th birthday party to the community. The event featured live music courtesy of the Misfits, a petting zoo, bouncy castles and a full range of children’s games. All of this was free to the community thanks to the generosity of the sponsors and the volunteers. Events such as this make our community strong and remind us of how lucky we are to enjoy the benefits of living in Selwyn Township. |
The Year in ReviewMonday night, friends and Family gathered to celebrate the success of the 2023 - 24 Rotary year, and to welcome the 2024 - 2025 Rotary year. More than ever the world needs Rotary. “As the Rotary year ends and another begins I want to thank you all for what you do to make lives better! I am so proud to be part of the BEL Club and of the work we do. We started last year building bird houses with children - giving them a hands-on experience and opportunity to be a positive part of the environment - and ended with presenting a beautiful selection of books to local schools - to help children further understand what peace looks like” said outgoing President Susan Davidson. The club also provided festive meals to families in need, supported the food banks, and gave the gift of Christmas. They created “Sunshine Bags” for seniors and supported the Community Care drop in centre. They planted tulips to support polio eradication, cleaned up the park and the BEL Rotary Bridgenorth trail, and started work on the pollinator garden at Rotary Park. BEL Rotary supported a student to the Adventure in Understanding program bringing Indigenous and non Indigenous youth together, participated in the Chemong School Fun Fair and sponsored family skating and well as the schools. The work of Rotary is international as well as local. The club supported the SOS Children's Village in Panama with kitchen equipment, a washing machine and television and celebrated the well in a remote village in Nepal. Often known as the “Home of the Polar Plunge”, the club hosted one of the most successful plunges it its history and thanks to the intrepid plungers and the generous community, more than $65,000 was raised to support local charities and the work of the club. Benefactors included Five Counties Children’s Centre, Camp Kawartha, LAWS, and cancer research (to name a few). The club continues to be a strong supporter of the Rotary Foundation and Polio Eradication and was recognized at the Zone and District level for this commitment. Before passing the gavel to incoming president Shannon Junkin, Davidson thanked the club for their passion, commitment and caring. “We do create hope for many who feel they have none and make a difference in lives”, said Davidson. She also recognized families, friends of Rotary and community partners – “without this team we could not accomplish what we do!” Incoming President Shannon accepted the gavel and outlined her goals for the year. She brings energy, enthusiasm, and commitment to the role. As a former exchange student, she understands the power of Rotary and the impact it has at home and across the globe. Junkin recognized the club and will work to continue to meet the needs of the community.

For the Birds![]() As part of the Shamrock Festival weekend, BEL Rotarians worked with "little carpenters” to build bird houses. With the help of the adult carpenters, Rotarians Mike Richardson, Bob Fawcett and Scott Negrych, the children completed a project they could be proud of. The delight on the children's faces when they saw their creation said it all. Not only did they have fun, they created something that will be beneficial to the environment, one of Rotary's areas of focus. |
Chemong Fun Fair: Huge Success![]() For many students (and teachers too) one of the highlights of the school year is the Fun Fair. This is a great opportunity for the community, staff, parents and students to come together in fun and fellowship. The Bridgenorth Ennismore Lakefield Rotary Club was a part of this fun filled event at Chemong P.S. The club set up an axe throwing station where students and parents alike could test their skills. Thank you to Courtney Usborne for organizing this and to Rotarians Mike Richardson, Kim Whynot, Janet Markham and Wilf Gray for making it happen.

They realize the impact the foundation has on lives and have given generously. In addition to their ongoing giving, there is also provision in their wills to support the foundation and continue their legacy of giving. Thank you Christopher and Jennifer, thanks to you the world has become one step closer to peace and understanding. |
Supporting Seniors![]() BEL Rotary is known for its work in the community. One of their signature projects is the Adopt a Family Christmas support for families facing challenges during the festive season. With the support of schools this project focuses on families with children who may not otherwise experience the joys of the holiday season that so many of us take for granted. BEL Rotary also remembers our seniors. Many seniors live in difficult circumstances and may not enjoy the little extras! At the meeting on Monday night Rotarians put together 50 gift bags for seniors in our community, to celebrate spring and to remind them they are a valued part of our community. Thank you to the Ennismore and Lakefield Community Care offices for your input and help facilitating this opportunity. Thank you to Mary Lou Tryan and Joan Hudson for your incredible shopping and for coordinating this project. |
Stewards of the Trail![]() The BEL Rotary Bridgenorth Trail is enjoyed by local residents and visitors alike. There are very few times when you can’t find people (often with their dogs) walking the trail. As part of their commitment to the environment, BEL Rotary was a partner in developing the trail and continue their involvement as Stewards of the Trail. As part of the April Spring Clean up, Rotarians Bob and Lynn Fawcett walked the trail to pick up garbage and recycling and to make note of any maintenance/repairs that are needed. |
Tulips for Polio: A Win Win![]() As part of our continued efforts to eradicate polio from the world, the BEL Rotary Club purchased tulip bulbs as part of a district wide fundraiser, and planted them the last two years at various locations in our township including, Rotary Park at the west end of the Gifford Causeway, Heritage Park in Bridgenorth, the Bridgenorth Library, Extendicare Lakefield and Royal Gardens in Peterborough. Super Spring Clean Up![]() The weather cooperated on Sunday as members of the BEL Rotary Club worked with family and friends clean up Rotary Park and the surrounding area. The youngest member of the team was 6 year old Rhyland and the oldest – well we won’t say! The gazebo got a fresh coat of paint and in addition about 20 bags of garbage and recycling were collected from the park, the causeway and surrounding roads. |

Adventure in Understanding: Developing Mutual Understanding and RespectAdventure in Understanding The Canoe is an iconic Canadian vessel symbolizing respect, relevance, reciprocity and reconciliation. The Adventure in Understanding Program embodies this spirit and brings together indigenous and non-indigenous youth to share and experience aspects of Indigenous culture, and to build respect for themselves, each other and the environment. Each year BEL Rotary sponsors a student to participate in this amazing opportunity. This year BEL Rotary was delighted to sponsor a student from British Columbia. Through a paddle (carved at Curve Lake) a connection was made and an educator came with a youth to find out more about the program. In the words of one participant, “I developed a richer understanding of myself and the incredible people I shared the experience with”. |
"Little" Carpenters at Work"![]() As part of the Shamrock Festival weekend, BEL Rotarians worked with "little carpenters: to build bee houses, bird houses and owl houses. Thank you to our adult carpenters: Heather and Scott Negrych, Bob Fawcett and Mike Richardson for making this opportunity possible.

BEL Rotarians Recognized!![]() The mission of The Rotary Foundation is to enable Rotarians to change the world through the improvement of health, the support of education, and the alleviation of poverty. Simply said, it is to do “good” in the world and come one step closer to peace. When a person is recognized with a Paul Harris Fellow, it means that 1000 USD has been donated to the Foundation either by or on behalf of the individual. Foundation dollars make a difference. Local projects supported by the Rotary Foundation include the annual adopt a family project, support of the Lakefield and Bridgenorth Food Banks, support for local agencies and Long Term Care facilities during the pandemic, the BEL Rotary Bridegenorth Trail and the provision of equipment to local schools. BEL Rotarians Bring Christmas to Local FamiliesIt has been another challenging year, and many of our community members continue to make difficult decisions as they balance financial obligations in the reality of the ongoing pandemic. Again this year, in response to the pandemic and increased need they once again increased the number of families supported and also included food items and the makings of a festive holiday dinner. With input from the local schools and the families, members purchased toys, games, puzzles, sporting equipment, clothing and books suitable to the needs and interests of the children. The theme for 2021 was “FAMILY FUN TIME: games and resources for families to connect and enjoy healthy living indoors and out”. BEL Rotary was able to put a smile on many faces! We are proud to be part of such a warm and generous community!

A World Without Polio: Making the Dream Come True![]() ![]() ![]() On October 24th, the world celebratedWorld Polio Day. This recognition was established by Rotary International to commemorate the birth of Jonas Salk, the medical researcher who led the first team to develop a vaccine against polio. He developed the inactivated polio virus vaccine which came into use in 1955, after which Albert Sabine developed the oral vaccine that came into use in 1961. World Polio Day has been observed for over a decade. It is a day to celebrate the great strides towards eradicating the Polio virus. We also use this day to thank the thousands of healthcare workers and volunteers who have worked tirelessly to vaccinate children, often at great risk to their lives. BEL Rotarians joined Rotarians from the Peterborough and Kawartha Clubs to walk to raise awareness of polio. |
Giving Forward![]() ![]() For many of us Thanksgiving traditions include long walks in the woods enjoying the beauty of nature, and then returning home to the smells of roasting turkey and potatoes, pumpkin pie and all the trimmings for a bountiful Thanksgiving dinner. Many families in our community have continued to experience increased economic loss and uncertainty during this difficult time making celebrations such as Thanksgiving elusive. BEL Rotarians with the support of John Le Quang owner of John’s Independent in Bridgenorth, were able to bring Thanksgiving to some of our local residents. Rotarians purchased, packaged and delivered all of the makings for a turkey dinner (as well as a few treats) to those in need.

Public Accessible Boat Launch Dock![]() BEL Rotary is proud to provide the only public accessible boat launch dock in the area. In the spring of 2020, he and his family met with the BEL Rotary Community Services committee to suggest accessible access to the boat launch dock at Rotary Park. The Box family donated $500.00 towards the project and the BEL Club enthusiastically took on the project. Thanks to our incredible community, Dan Kyle Excavating who donated material for the pathway to the ramp, labour and installation of the bollard and sign, and to R & J Machine who completed the installation of the ramp, the accessible boat launch dock is ready for use! The Gazebo at Rotary Park (on the west end of the Bridgenorth Causeway) had been relocated to facilitate the Gifford Causeway expansion currently underway. Last week, the gazebo was “air lifted” to its original position. Thanks to the hard work of the BEL Rotary Club, it is safely secured to the newly poured concrete pad and beautifully landscaped. Thank you to Kim and Craig Telford from Scott Concrete Products who generously donated the screenings and river rock and to the Township for covering expenses related to the causeway expansion. In keeping with Rotary’s goal of inclusivity, the gazebo is fully accessible. |

Polar Plunge 2013
33rd Jumping of Polar Plunge
Bridgenorth, ON.
The weather outside is freezing or so the Rotary Club of Bridgenorth-Ennismore- Lakefield (B.E.L.) hopes. They have now begun making preparations for the 33rd annual Polar Plunge at Chemong Lake.
What’s new this year? The B.E.L. Club has implemented an arrangement for jumpers to register and gather donations on-line. Go to: www.belrotaryplunge.com to sign up if you’re jumping or to donate to your favourite plunger. Using this method, the Club hopes to surpass their highest year in 2011 which raised in excess of $84,000 for more than 50 charities and the Club itself. Here is an opportunity to raise funds for the charity of your choice. 60% of the monies raised goes to your chosen charity and 40% comes to BEL Rotary to support its local and international service projects. The “Freezin for a Reason” event happens on Sunday, Feb 3rd at 2 pm sharp at Rotary Park in Ennismore. The theme is “Movie Mania” and plungers can compete for prizes including Best Costume and Most Money Raised. The Best Costume Prize will go to the jumpers who dress in our movie theme and impress our celebrity judges with their “acting”. The teams who raise the most money will also be recognized one of two categories: the most money raised by a large corporation and the most money raised by an individual or small company. It’s Christmas, the season of giving and the perfect time to ask your colleagues and friends for their generous support. For more information, you can go to www.belrotary.com and click on the right hand side to obtain a pledge sheet, see the rules and to find out how to generate an on-line account. You may also contact Tony Davidson, this year’s Plunge Chair at 705-743-4244 or by e-mail: anthony.davidson@rbc.com.
