Every year, BEL Rotarians purchase games, toys and clothing for local families to help provide for them a brighter, merrier Christmas.

For some families in our community the joy that many of us associate with the holiday season is tarnished by financial demands and stretched budgets.  Many families live below the poverty line.  Many others have modest incomes and have to make difficult decisions at this time of year: do they buy presents for their children or do they put food on the table?

One of the joys of the season is “giving”.  Members of the Rotary Club of Bridgenorth- Ennismore-Lakefield (BEL) stepped up to the challenge and adopted six families from Chemong, Lakefield District (Ridpath), St Paul Lakefield and St Martin Schools.  With input from the schools, Rotarians hit the stores and purchased gifts specific to the interests and needs of the children.  “The 2017 theme is Active and Engaged.  Our goal is to encourage kids to enjoy the winter and encourage outdoor activities to enhance active and healthy living”, said program chair Mike Richardson. “Thank you to the local schools for making this partnership possible.”

In addition to books and other smaller items, children will receive winter wear, and sports equipment including sleds, toboggans and skates.

Spirit was high at the Monday night meeting when the Rotarians found their “inner child” and shared their purchases.  “Many of us have the luxury of celebrating the wonder of the season with friends and family” said President Trevor, “this is one small way we can extend this feeling to members of our community who are not so fortunate”.

It is thanks to the generosity of our community partners and sponsors that the BEL Rotary Club is able to take on projects such as this.  The BEL Rotary Club wishes you a happy and safe holiday season and the best of 2018, and extends a heartfelt thank you for your support.
