The Dream Continues

The atrocities of the Khmer Rouge left a generation of Cambodian without training and education, and this has made the country one of the poorest in the world.  Education is the key to a better future.  The BEL Club is working to make this better future a reality. 
 
 
 
 
Members of the BEL Club, with Rotary Clubs in District 7010 and friends and family are heading to the province of Svay Rieng, Cambodia in February to help wth the country's rebuilding.  The team will be erecting a three room school/multi use facility consisting of a classroom/library, sewing instruction room and teacher accommodation.  
 
The classroom/library will serve to teach English classes to the many youth who live in the villages and may include adult English classes as time and need permit.  As there is no library in the area, the library room will also serve the community, as well as provide programs and support English instruction for the students.  Classes last for a year and students work through several of levels of curriculum. 
 
The sewing program lasts one year. Local women are provided with a quality treadle machine, supplies and cloth for the year. The goal is to teach them to run their own small village tailor/repair shop, so they can provide a sustainable income for their family, while staying with their family. The classes will run weekdays for half the day. They will learn English related to sewing needs, but at the end of the course, will be running a local village business.  The goal is not to learn to sew to get a factory job, but rather be self sufficient.
 
As this generation of educated children becomes adults, they will improve the quality of life for everyone in their community. Educated children will be better prepared to pull their families out of poverty. The overall health of the community members will also improve. With newfound education and prosperity, diseases such as Malaria will begin to lose their grip and infant mortality rates will improve. What these children learn within the four walls of a school can have a ripple effect that improves life for their own children, their grandchildren, and the children of future generations.

Make an individual donation to the build. Individual cheques are payable to “The Rotary Clubs of Peterborough Foundation, c/o BEL Rotary” with Cambodia School Build in the memo line.  Individual donations of $50.00 or more will be issued a tax receipt and individuals will be recognized as “Builders”. Sponsor a Student:  Donations of $100.00 CAN will pay for the expenses of supporting a student for one year.  Individuals will get a picture of the student and a tax receipt will be issued.  (Cheques are made payable to “The Peterborough Rotary Clubs of Peterborough Foundation, c/o BEL Rotary, with “Student Sponsorship” in the memo line. Donate:
  • Sewing supplies
  • School supplies (pens, pencils, crayons, colouring books, coloured pencils, markers, erasers, letter stencils, rulers, simple jig saw puzzles)
  • Sporting goods ( skipping ropes, nerf balls, bats, badminton equipment)
  • Medical/dental supplies (especially toothpaste)
  • Literacy supplies (picture books up to about grade 3, easy read, pattern books, easy read non-fiction)
