Rotary Mourns Loss of Dennis DietzWe lost a friend and fellow Rotarian suddenly on February 11, 2026. Dennis Dietz was a lawyer, military officer, husband, father, and grandfather. We will miss Dennis. His integrity, principles, and generosity will not be forgotten. He will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery. It is a sudden, shocking, and tragic loss. Deep sympathy goes out to his wife Sheila, family, and friends.

Our doors do lock once the shift begins. If you are unable to attend or stay for the entire scheduled shift, please log in to your account to cancel ahead of time. Johnston Rotary's Cy-Hawk Challenge Raises Much-Needed Funds for the Johnston Partnership The Johnston Rotary hosted a Cy-Hawk Challenge at their September 3, 2024, meeting, leading up to the big game. Rotarians donated 397 pounds of personal care items, food, dog food, and clothes, and $120, to the Johnston Partnership, Johnston's local food bank and clothes closet. Our District Governor, Dave Cook, and his wife Lisa, were our guests at the meeting. (Oh, by the way, Iowa State won.)

District Governor from Georgia Visits Johnston Rotary District Governor Gary Moore of Georgia visited the Johnston Rotary meeting this morning, Tuesday, August 13, 2025, while coming to Iowa for the first time. He came to see the Iowa State Fair, and was planning to see several other special tourist sites around Iowa. He brought us banners from his club, and we gave him a banner from our club. Rotary at Smokin' Heroes at Green Days -- Promoting Fun and the Police, Fire, and Military, and Raising Funds!Johnston Rotary worked with the Johnston Police at Johnston Green Days to raise funds to send high school students to an international leadership camp in Kosovo. And, we sampled great barbecue and sides from the smokin' competition competitors, and helped with set up and tabulating judging for         the smoked meats. Thanks to the public for coming, donating, buying raffle tickets, tasting the yummy meats, and sampling and voting on the tasty side dishes.

Johnston Rotary's Golf Event June 3 2024 a Great Success and a Blast               Johnston Rotary's Third Annual Charity Golf Tournament June 3, 2024, at Hyperion was a great success! We had 108 golfers on what turned into a sunny day, with special appearances by Denton Homes and the Johnston High School Golf Team members. We raised funds for Tori's Angels, Johnston Partnership, USO, and Johnston Rotary. It was a team effort with sponsors, raffle prizes, and fun games and incentives at various holes, including a golf cannon. What a blast! |

Johnston Rotary Supports the Library's Summer Youth Reading Project Johnston Rotary donated $1500 to the Johnston Library to support its Summer Youth Reading Project. They worked with Youth Services Librarian Megan Sockness to bag around100 book bags for disadvantaged kids of a variety of ages.Megan spoke to us at our June 11, 2024, meeting, showing us the bag books and projects, and explaining how she would deliver the bags to various locations around the city. Thanks to the Johnston Library for reaching out to kids in our community to promote reading!  |

Johnston Rotary Cleans Up Park Bright and EarlyThanks to all the members that were able to participate on April 30, 2024, in this quarter's 5th Tuesday activity. About 20 member spent about an hour and a half cleaning up the creek near Northview Estates Park. We got started after quick breakfast and collected a lot of trash. It was hard work but we made a big difference. A great example of Rotarians Making a Difference!!

Johnston Rotary Packed Meals at Meals from the HeartlandJohnston Rotary had a great time volunteering by packing meals at Meals from the Heartland on January 30, 2023. We packed meals for food insecure neighbors in Iowa and worldwide. We made 59 boxes for MFH, which is 12,744 meals that will feed 43 kids for an entire year. We learned that 50 boxes would be considered average for 22 people, so we were above average. This was a great team building experience.

Johnston Rotary Volunteers with Urban Bicycle Food MinistryJohnston Rotary and some family and friends learned alot and experienced a well-oiled machine when they volunteered November 2, 2023, with the Urban Bicycle Food Ministry. This amazing group of volunteers uses bikes and cars to deliver food every Thursday evening to hundreds of homeless and food insecure on eight different routes throughout the Des Moines community. We volunteered time and $400 to help these amazing volunteers with food preparation and packing and delivery. What an experience! Thank you to this group and volunteers for all they do! Thanks for including us! It costs them over $1600 each week to buy the food and supplies they need. Thanks to our members Mike Pogge-Weaver and Dave Boberg for organizing! Thanks to Robby Collier, CEO and Chief Burrito Slinger, who came to our early meeting on October 31, 2023, and spoke about his passion for helping people through the Urban Bicycle Food Ministry!

Smokin' HeroesSmokin' Heroes at Green Days on Saturday, June 19, 2023 The Johnston Police Department is once again partnering with the Johnston Rotary to help make this opportunity possible. They will be hosting the Annual Smokin’ Heroes Smoke-off event on Saturday, June 19, during Johnston Green Days at Terra Park. The event is open to the public to sample the delicious smoked meats and side dishes and will run from 1:00pm to 4:00 p.m. with a free will offering. Rotary will be selling raffle tickets with monetary prizes to the winners. The public has the opportunity to vote on favorite sides, and smoked meat judges vote on the meat dishes. Votes will be tabulated and the winner will be announced approximately around 4:00 - 4:30. They will all be waiting to meet you on June 12th at the Johnston Rotary Club’s 2nd Annual J-Town Golf Championship held at Hyperion Field Club! In keeping with the Rotary “Service above Self” motto, this event is organized to raise money to benefit charitable organizations in our community. Stop by between 10AM and Noon to say hello to Chuck Long from Adaptive Sports Iowa, one of the greatest University of Iowa football players ever, and possibly the nicest guy you’ll ever meet. You don’t have to be a golfer to have fun! Get your picture taken with Cubbie, Cy and Herky, visit with Chuck Long, check out the great prizes and buy a raffle ticket or two; find out about Johnston Rotary Club’s good works and how you can get involved. We’ll have membership information available and Rotarians on hand to answer questions. This year’s tournament will be used to directly support the Partnership for a Healthy Community, Elllipsis, Childserve and additional Rotary charitable work in our community. Al Lorenzen--Godspeed EquineAl Lorenzen joined the Rotary breakfast this week to share his faith-based story about how his life led him to Godspeed Equine. As a former basketball player at both the collegiate (Iowa) and professional (Europe) levels, Al ultimately returned to Iowa where he started Wildwood Ranch, which was south of Des Moines. As he continued with this work, his strong faith led he and his wife Kelly to begin developing the idea of Godspeed Equine. In 2017, Godspeed Equine was founded in Warren County, and two years later the search for a Forever Home began, with a location purchased (Fallis Sod Farm) in 2020. A barn shell was constructed on the property, and in 2021, the utilities, waterers, fence, barn interior, and arena were completed. Godspeed provides faith-based equine therapy and learning activities to provide hope, healing, and opportunities for emotional growth through horses and through Christianity. Its vision is for participants to experience the love of Jesus using horses to teach them how to be authentic and present, seeking open and honest communication with others while learning to give and receive trust and respect. The location of Godspeed Equine is three miles north of the new Waukee high school. The kids (the participants), come from as far away as Earlham and Madrid. Many have been subjected to physical and/or sexual abuse, or may suffer from anxiety, depression, and/or other emotional challenges. The Godspeed Equine program consists of 4-6 students per group with 12 after-school sessions per cycle over 6 weeks. Students can attend multiple cycles, and must be in a faith based community. They find their own transportation, and when they arrive, there are daily devotions and journaling along with learning basic horsemanship to care for the horses (and the facility). Ultimately, the ranch and the horses are used as tools to expose them to the love of Jesus. Al shared that Godspeed Equine is currently involved in a facilities project to build restrooms, meeting and office space, and a caretaker’s quarters. As it continues to grow and impact many young adults, they also fundraise to secure funding that supports this growth. Founded in 1878 in London, England, today, The Salvation Army is active in virtually every corner of the world, and serves 131 countries, offering the message of God's healing and hope to all those in need.

Meals from the Heartland-Nov 29, 2022The members of Johnston Rotary had a blast and volunteered an evening of work for Meals from the Heartland, a Des Moines based charity that works to stop childhood hunger, in Iowa and across the United States and around the world. Meals from the Heartland is a faith-related organization that believes in the importance of prayer, volunteer services, and financial giving, with the over-arching goal to stop childhood hunger. Our humble but hard-working Johnston Rotarians packed over 90,000 meals on November 29th. |

General Ron Dardis Visits RotaryGENERAL RON DARDIS, CAREER AND INDUSTRY UPDATE, NOVEMBER 8, 2022 Lieutenant (3 Star) General Ron Dardis was our speaker this week. He covered numerous topics starting with the American Dunes Golf Club (https://americandunesgolfclub.com/) located in Grand Haven, Michigan. American Dunes memorializes the birthplace of the Folds of Honor. It is signature golf course designed by Jack Nicklaus through his golf design company at no cost to the Club. The Club raises awareness and funds for the families of our fallen and disabled veterans. The General then discussed Leadership Philosophies and Characteristics of Effective Leadership that he has seen and used over time. The 5-C’s of effective leadership were touched on: Calling, Communication, Creativity, Caring & Consistency. His personal leadership philosophies based on life experiences and special events were also mentioned and they included Team, Family, and Treating People with Respect. Some personal noteworthy experiences and comments were also discussed:
In closing, the General credits his family and their support to his success. Additionally, the men and women of the Iowa National Guard, their dedication and support are also major impactors on his success. The General appreciates everyone’s support for the men and women in uniform. The meeting attendees were moved by his excellent presentation.

Dorothy's House / Kellie MarkeyKellie Markie, founder and Executive Director of Dorothy's House visited Rotary on November 1st. After a successful marketing career, Kellie returned to her hometown of Des Moines where she began flipping houses and volunteering with Y.E.S.S., helping local teen girls. While volunteering, Kellie’s eyes were opened to the severity of abuse that many children in our community unfortunately suffer. While volunteering at a shelter, Kellie encountered a 16-year-old girl, named Dorothy. Despite the bleak circumstances in the shelter, which included cement walls and floors, with the beds chained down and no shortage of drama amongst the girls there, Dorothy maintained a positive outlook, and this inspired Kellie. She wanted to give teens like Dorothy the opportunity to feel the warmth that only a home could provide. Kellie decided to became a foster parent. The first girl that Kellie fostered had been trafficked. This experience further educated Kellie about the harsh reality that trafficking victims face and what types of things, even here in our own community, make the trafficking possible. The knowledge gained from this insight has allowed Kellie to help the FBI in their efforts, and they have collaboratively prevented three trafficking victims from being moved out of state. Statistics show that if a victim is not removed from these abusive circumstances within seven years, their most likely outcome is death by either suicide or drug overdose. Kellie is motivated to help victims get out of these circumstances. The house now known as Dorothy’s House was discovered and purchased by Kellie when she was flipping homes. Next door to it was an empty lot and an abandoned house. Kellie purchased each of these and added to Dorothy’s House. Dorothy’s House opened seven years ago. They provide a “safe place for the practice of life for those whose lives have been interrupted by human trafficking, exploitation and prostitution.” They know each person’s experiences have been different and they are flexible to adapt to each resident’s needs. Providing long-term housing for the Dorothy Alums is the ultimate goal. Dorothy's House is 100% privately funded by local charitable organizations and people. Sherry Kubalsky, Children's AuthorSherry Kubalsky, Children’s Author, spoke to the Johnston Rotary Club this week. Sherry has completed two children’s books and has a third one in process. Her first book is entitled It’s OK to be ME. Her second book is entitled The Square Wreath. These are Christian oriented books in which the proceeds from sales go to Ghana clean water projects. Sherry believes that authoring books is her calling and her way of using her talents to help improve the quality of life for those in need. Some interesting comments and facts that Sherry spoke about today are as follows:
Sherry grew up in Greene, Iowa, attended UNI and received her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. She now resides in Ankeny and is in the process of joining the Ankeny Rotary Club. |

Scott Wendl of Remax Precision Visits RotaryScott Wendl of Remax Precision visited the Johnston Rotary on September 6th to discuss the current state of the local and national residential real estate markets. Scott is an owner in the forty agent Remax Precision office and has been an agent and broker for 20+ years. Scott shared that currently in the Des Moines metro there are rougly 2,647 homes for sale, which represents about a two month supply of homes. A more balanced supply level would be closer to 3500 homes and 4 months. We're currently still in a Seller's Market despite the rise in interest rates and continued record price levels. Approximately 36 people per day are moving to the Des Moines metro and this has kept demand for homes very hot in all price ranges. Scott is active in various realtor and real estate constituencies, and served as the President of the Iowa Association of Realtors in 2020. He regularly travels around the country and to Washington DC to advocate for real estate and realtor related causes.

Dave Boberg Speaks to Rotary about Toastmasters,Dave Boberg, Johnston Rotary Member and Toastmasters Member, spoke to Johnston Rotary about Toastmasters on August 23. He is a member of the club in Urbandale, Los Oradores, which is a bilingual group. Toastmasters International has an alliance with Rotary International. Leaders of both organizations in 2019 formed the alliance dedicated to education and providing high value experiential communication and leadership skills. Toastmasters was formed in 1924 with the mission to provide supportive and positive experience, empowering members to develop communication and leadership skills, resulting in greater self-confidence and personal growth. Most common Toastmasters clubs are community based. There are also some corporate, advanced, college, bilingual, military, and prison clubs. There are 50 clubs in Iowa, with 19 in Des Moines. Most meetings are hybrid. The meetings involve hands on learning. The average group has 15 members, with the ideal being 20. Their goal is to try to get everyone speaking a little at a meeting. They have assigned presentations on prepared topics for 5-7 minutes and impromptu talks on topics unknown in advance, with verbal evaluation of prepared talks at every meeting, and written feedback from everyone at meetings. Deb Bishop, Mandela Washington Fellowship, 8-16-2022Today Johnston Rotary Member, and Drake University Professor Dr. Debra Bishop, gave a presentation on the Mandela Washington Fellowship, a program that brings 25 (aged 25-35) African business leaders from 19 Sub-Saharan countries to Des Moines for the Summer through a Drake University partnership with the U.S. Department of State. Dr. Bishop is instrumental in the program and has traveled extensively throughout Africa, helping students and communities (mostly in Uganda) study sustainable development with a focus on health and education services.

Megan Sehr, Self Help International, 2-18-2020 Self Help International originated in Waverly, Iowa in 1959 by Vern Schield. The group started by building and shipping a number of small “Self-Helper” tractors to subsistence farmers in 48 different countries. Most recently, the organization has focused their efforts in Ghana and Nicaragua.Their mission has not wavered from the idea of sustainable community development, but has branched out to include improving agriculture, but also fighting malnutrition in all ages, promoting clean water, sanitation and hygiene, and especially empowering women and girls. As a result of their efforts, in 2018, 940 women and girls pursued their business and educational goals; 671 participants attended agricultural and entrepreneurship training sessions; 865 children were fed a nutritious breakfast every day of the school year; and, 4,699 residents of rural communities gained access to safe drinking water. They empower women and girls through offering financial literacy programs and micro loans to start business enterprises – most of these are in the agriculture-related fields. They enable girls to increase the number of days attended each year in school through feminine hygiene education. They improve agriculture by supplying tools and education to improve techniques, and provide high protein food options and show them post-harvest storage options to better feed their families. They encourage women-owned businesses through their entrepreneurship programs in an industry which, traditionally, has been a male-dominated industry. They fight malnutrition by providing education and appropriate prenatal care and food sources for children under school age to help prevent growth stunting at that early age, as well as continuing through school years. This also encourages attendance at schools, since this is many times the only meal they get each day. This wonderful organization operates entirely on donations. Life Jacket Station Making a Difference!A few weeks ago during a birthday party held at Terra Park in Johnston, the life jackets available near the fishing pier where put to good use. Several of the children participating in the event where eager to try their hand at fishing but surely had know idea how deep the water was in front of peir. The organizers of the event greatly appreciated the efforts by the Rotary Club of Johnston in making these life jackets available at no cost and right where they were needed. They quickly put them to good use. Everyone had a great time, some fish were caught and the organizers where able to enjoy the event knowing that these children were safe on the pier while giving those fish a run for their money. Thanks to those that shared this story, the attached picture and obtain the authorization to use them for this posting.  |

Life Jacket Stations at Terra Park Now Open It's official, the Life Jacket Loaner Station at Terra Park is now open. This morning, Tuesday, August 13th members of the Rotary Club of Johnston were joined by Johnston Mayor Paula Dierenfeld, John Schmitz, Johnston Parks and Recreation Director, Fire Chief Jim Clark and Susan Stocker of the Department of Natural Resources to cut the ribbon and open the newest additional to Terra Park. The Life Jackets, available without costs are now available for toddlers to adults that are taking advantage of Terra Lake. The project funded by the Rotary Club of Johnston and constructed by club members was made possible through the help of so many. Steve Grasso and his staff at GTG Companies helps with the plans for the station. LRI Graphics assisted with the design of signage for the station and the project was finished off with the assistance of the members of the Johnston Parks and Public Works Department. The goal - to make Terra Park and Terra Lake a safe place for families to enjoy. Another project lead by Rotarians working to make a difference.

Program Feb. 6, 2018 - Peggy Huppert, Executive Director of the Iowa affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI)Ms. Huppert said one in five adults or roughly 600,000 Iowans live with some form of mental illness. About 37,000 grapple with serious mental illness daily. She said NAMI Iowa’s mission is to provide support to persons with mental illness and their families, to provide more public education about mental health illness, and to work to end the stigma of living with a mental illness. Millions of Americans suffer from some aspect of mental illness. It’s estimated that 20 percent of youths ages 13-18 live with a mental health condition and 50 percent of all lifetime cases of mental illness begin by age 14 and 75 percent by age 24.1. Ms. Huppert said advocacy work in Iowa includes meeting with legislators. The NAMI Iowa “Day on the Hill” to meet with Iowa lawmakers is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, February 21, 2018. |

The Rotary Foundation transforms your gifts into service projects that change lives both close to home and around the world. During the past 100 years, the Foundation has spent $3 billion on life-changing, sustainable projects. The 35,000 clubs carry out sustainable service projects that support our six causes. For example, Rotary has wiped out 99.9 percent of all polio cases. Donation also trains future peacemakers, supports clean water, and strengthens local economies.  One donation can have a huge impact. It can save a life. A child can be protected from polio with as little as 60 cents. Our partners make your donation go even further. For more than 100 years, The Rotary Foundation has been supporting the work of Rotarians in order to create sustainable solutions for our world’s most pressing needs. But there is still much to do and we need your help!
Rotary gives in countless ways, focusing our service efforts in the six areas of focus: fighting disease, providing clean water, saving mothers and children, supporting education and growing local economies - and of course in the eradication of polio.
Your contribution to The Rotary Foundation of $10 will provide a mosquito net in countries like Uganda where malaria is a major health concern. A gift of $15 can protect children for life from polio in Afghanistan, Nigeria and/or Pakistan. For $50 deadly waterborne diseases can be eliminated by purchasing personal water filters in Guatemala, and an $85 contribution can pay for business classes in the US for low-income entrepreneurs. $100 and a microloan can purchase a sewing machine to launch a business in a developing country. A $500 donation helps communities create a safe and positive atmosphere where children can thrive, and $1000 can help secondary school students learn to resolve conflict.

Foundation Minute for Week of April 10
The Rotary Foundation ranked third in CNBC’s annual list of “Top 10 Charities Changing the World.” The 2016 list included some of the largest and highest-rated charities that help women, children, the poor and the environment throughout the world, according to Charity Navigator. The organizations also maintain high standards of financial health, accountability, and transparency of reporting.
The Rotary Foundation was noted for connecting 1.2 million members from more than 200 geographic areas to tackle the world’s most pressing humanitarian challenges, including projects that focus on disease prevention, water, sanitation and maternal and child health. The ranking also recognized Rotary’s role in the effort to eradicate polio. The Foundation made the list in 2015 as well.

Foundation Minute for Week of March 6
The Rotary Foundation’s district and global grants support Rotarian’s efforts to change lives and serve communities within their own neighborhoods and throughout the world.
In 2015-16 the Foundation approved 494 district grants, and the program awards totaled $25.5 million. These grants supported smaller scale, short-term projects related to the Foundation’s mission.
And during the same year the Foundation approved 1,165 global grants, which totaled $70 million. These grants fund large-scale international activities with sustainable and measurable results that support Rotary’s six areas of focus. Activities include humanitarian projects, scholarships and vocational training teams.

Foundation Minute for Week of December 12th
At least seven million children under the age of five die each year due to malnutrion, poor health care, and inadequate sanitation. To help reduce this rate, Rotarians
provide immunizations and antibiotics to babies, improve access to essential medicalservices, and support trained health care providers for mothers and their children.
According to the World Bank, 310 women die in Uganda for every 100,000 live births, compared with just 21 in the United States and 12 inthe United Kingdom.
Infants fare even worse. In Uganda, 45 out of 1000 infants never reach the age of one, compared with six in the US and just four in the UK. Kenya and Tanzania’s infant and maternal mortality rates are also disturbing. Add in the HIV/AIDS crisis, poverty and inadequate – or nonexistent – clinics
and it’s clear that programs like these are needed more than ever in East Africa. To address this challenge, The Rotary Foundation and AgaKhan University
are working together to provide nursing professionals the skills and education they need to improve the lives of mothers and their children in East Africa.
Twenty-four students were given Rotary scholarships to advance their nursing education in Uganda. They graduated with either a Registered Nurse or
Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. Thanks to The Rotary Foundation these students now carry out programs to teach health care to men and women in their
communities, and are taking part in outreach programs to reduce the deaths of infants.

The Heritage Process The Speaker from the November 22nd meeting was our own member Wayne Johnson to discuss the Heritage Design Process with regard to financial and estate planning. Studies have shown that 90 percent of families fail when it comes to keeping the family unity and its assets together for more than three generations. There are many reasons for that, but the most important question that fact raises is:If 90 percent of families fail, what do the 'successful' 10 percent do differently? The difference is not in financial or estate planning. The difference is that a 3rd element of planning, known as heritage design is needed. The Heritage Design prepares heirs to receive both financial as well as their emotional inheritances. It shapes and guides the decisions people make regarding their financial and estate planning. Heritage design can be as simple as creating special family traditions that foster communication between family members, to the establishment of multi-generational family governance structures. This proven process helps people to discover and secure the future they really want. It was developed to help families and individuals to get stronger today, and to achieve their dreams across generations. In the Heritage Design Process, families learn to: * Identify family stories, values, life lessons and experiences, and use them as the cornerstone for all their planning. * Communicate effectively on an adult-to-adult level. * Prepare & equip the next generations. * Work together, and mentor the children in the skills they'll need to succeed as individuals and as a united family. The principles of The Heritage Process have nothing to do with money. They apply to people at all income levels because designing for the future of your money is not the same as designing for the future of your family. |

SBA Director, Jayne Armstrong Speaks to Johnston RotaryThe speaker for November 8, Election Day 2016, was Jayne Armstrong, Iowa District Director of the U. S. Small Business Administration (SBA). Ms. Armstrong addressed the Johnston Rotary Club at the invitation of Dave Berry.
She oversees financial, business counseling and government contracting operations for the SBA Iowa District Office, and has worked as District Director in many different states. A native of Pittsburgh, PA, Jayne earned multiple degrees from West Virginia University, and was the student body president. She has been a Rotarian for 29 years.
The SBA works with entrepreneurs, and provides primarily capital, counseling, and contracting services for their small business clients.
Capital – provides government guaranteed loans, but does not include any Grants. For the startup businesses they serve, they will share the risk with the local bank to allow them to provide loans for fledging companies. Loan volume for Iowa is greater than 450 loans per year, with loan volumes approaching $200 million per year, serviced from 9 locations in Iowa.
Counseling - SBA also has various counseling services for Small Business, including specific programs for women and veterans. These services include one-on-one counseling, training, and technical assistance.
Contracting – SBA has programs to assist companies to secure federal contracts. Approximately 25% of federal contracts are fulfilled by small companies.
Advocacy – Representation for small business community.
SBA Disaster Program – Provide low interest, long term loans for physical disaster business loans and economic injury loans.
Priorities for the Iowa District include 1) women, minority and veteran firms, 2) increase awareness of SBA programs and services, 3) establish new relationships, and 4) concentrate on low penetration markets in less populated areas of Iowa.
Industries they focus on are retail (Main Street), manufacturing, supply chain, and franchising.

Tom Rice Speaks to Rotary Club of JohnstonTom Rice – Director, University of Iowa Des Moines Programs addressed the Johnston Rotary Club at the invitation of Dave Austin. He is very unique in that he has been a tenured professor at all three State universities. He is currently in charge of the management of the development of the Fleur Drive facility recently gifted to the University of Iowa by AIB.
Despite its University of Iowa ownership, the Iowa Board of Regents has designated that it be made available for all three State institutions (University of Iowa, Iowa State and University of Northern Iowa). The facility has numerous buildings and “plenty of room” for growth.
Right now, there are approximately 150 students at this campus, attending classes primarily in the sociology and political science areas. A majority of the students are “place bound” in the Des Moines area, and are an average age of 28 years old, working on finishing a college degree. Many of the courses are in the evening, being taught by University of Iowa staff being transported from Iowa City each day.
The ultimate vision for this campus is to be similar to the University of Indiana/Purdue University relationship, where majors are “shared” – perhaps with each university having certain majors of emphasis. For instance, UI would have Medical and Business majors, UNI would have Accounting and Real Estate, and ISU would have Engineering and Agriculture types of emphasis. All these, of course, are merely examples of the possibilities for the campus.
At the present time University of Iowa has 300 students enrolled in their MBA program at the Pappajohn Higher Education Center at 1200 Grand Avenue in Des Moines. Iowa State University also has a MBA program with a satellite classroom in the Capital Square building in Des Moines.

District Governor Visits Rotary Club of Johnston
District 6000 Governor Chris Knapp and his wife, Vernette visited the membership of the Rotary Club of Johnston on Tuesday, July 19th. Joining the Knapp's was District Assistant Governor, Tom Downs. Chris came to inform the club membership of all the great things that are happening for Rotary both within the District and throughout the world. The upcoming year is certainly going to be an exciting one for Rotary and some big news is hopefully going to be made. Stay tuned!!
