Dave Wilwerding, Community Development Director, gave an update to the Thrive 2040 Comprehensive Plan for Johnston. Due to covid precautions, the outreach to the community for feedback has been altered but they have used various means to obtain information from citizens.
The two items of concern were the in regard to the number of apartments now in the community and the fact that there is no swimming pool. Dave emphasized land use planning and discussed the vision for the area to the northwest of Johnston which is the area for expansion. He discussed the challenge of implanting the plans and that they not only want to have a vision but to take positive steps toward implementation.
In regard to the Town Center: Hansen Company is nearing completion of the City Hall and are planning to move in on October 8th; followed by an opening to the public on October 10th. Things are moving forward on the site such as recruiting tenants and on the amphitheater and splash pad that will also be used as an ice rink.
Dave also gave an update on the gateway to Johnston. There are plans for a 200,000 sq ft sports and fitness facility in the area down behind Sonic on Merle Hay. The City will collaborate with outdoor facilities. It is expected to be completed sometime in 2022.
