Kellie Markey from Dorothy’s house spoke to provide an update to our club. Two years ago they opened their doors to the youth. The first year they served seven girls ages 18 to 26. There is no average length of stay for these women, it ranged from four days to 10 months. They are provided tools to manage their trauma triggers. In November 2016 they closed for eight weeks, there were no current residence, and revamped the house. In January 2017 they reopened and served five girls. They had their first girl return to the house for further treatment, previously she had needed more extensive treatment them what they could provide for alcohol and an eating disorder. They also had their first non-English-speaking immigrant from China. She had been in a massage parlor, labor and trafficking were both happening there. They found a faith community to help build appropriate programming for her, a Chinese speaking lawyer toassist with the immigration process. Kim Reynolds has always been a supporter of their program. They have been working with DHS and the new director Foxhaven. They now have an approved license to work with children. They had to install sprinklers in the house to meet new standards. This was a $30,000 installation in the Knights of Columbus covered that’s completely for them. They are still having difficulties working through the system and they’ve been working with various systems in town. In September 2016 DHS added a checkbox for caseworkers for trauma/human trafficking. They are starting to look for their next property, expect in an opportunity for growth especially as they expand into working with children. They also have a prison program. 100% of women in prison for prostitution have a history of traffic in at some point in their life. They are often in prison due to drug or other related issues. They also typically have communicable diseases. They have their first annual fashion show of support coming up on Saturday, May 12 at Wakonda. This is a fundraiser for them. All are welcome to attend and support them.
