Johnston Community School District Corey Lund gave Johnston Rotary a grand tour of the new Johnston High School opening this fall.
There will be an open house/ribbon cutting on June 12th from 4 - 6 p.m., with students performing.
Next year the eighth and ninth graders will move into the high school, and their order building will be shut down for work to remodel it into an elementary school.  If there is money left, Wallace will be revamped into a new district office.
We met in the large student activity center which will serve as a dining area and activity area.  The gym has retractable bleachers, and a second floor running track.
There is a large dance studio on the second floor with a huge mirror, which room could be used for dance team and cheerleading practices.  Thee is a large fitness center.
        Three elevators are available.
All students will have I-pads as of sixth grade.  The Media Center includes library books and digital equipment.
The heating and cooling system has air circulated through spaces in the wall. and is designed to be healthier than traditional systems.
There are 120 video cameras for security. There are three courtyard areas.
The auditorium seats 1200.  It has balcony seating.  The District anticipates renting it out and is hiring someone to deal with rental of the auditorium and controlling the sound system.
The instrumental music room has outside access to allow easy access to the stadium for the band.  Vocal music has a separate room.  There is a small theater room that can have multi-purpose use, with a large mirror covered by retractable curtains.
Lockers will be provided for daily use, with locks changing daily.   As all students do not use lockers, there are not lockers for each student.
Teachers will not have an assigned desk in an assigned room.  Teachers will be mobile, but will have a room to do their work when not in class.
The school will open at about 1500 students, and is built to accommodate 1800.
It is an impressive facility.  If you missed the tour, try to see it during the open house.
