Many Johnston Rotarians recently attended a retirement ceremony for Colonel Al Meyer. In addition to all of his other duties, Al is currently Treasurer of the Johnston Rotary Club. In this picture held at Camp Dodge, you see Colonel Meyer (right) receiving one of many awards from Major General Timothy Orr, Adjutant General Iowa National Guard.
Al retired after serving over 36 years in the National Guard, including over 29 years full-time. He lives in Johnston with his wife, Lori, who retired as a full-time Iowa Army National Guard Soldier with over 22 years of service. Al is a graduate of the U.S. Army War College.
Colonel Meyer's awards include: Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (4 awards), Army Commendation Medal (6 awards), Army Achievement Medal, Army Reserve Components Medal (4 awards) and Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Bronze Service Star.
He is culminating his career after serving the past eight years as the United States Property and Fiscal Officer for Iowa.
