Smokin’ Heroes planning team consists of Tyler Thompson and Zach Grandon who are officers with the Johnston Police Department. Rotary members involved are Geno Nelsen, Shane Goodman, Shayne McGaughy, and Jim Hibbs. The Smokin’ Heroes is a barbecue contest that is between teams that are required to have at least one member who is from either law enforcement, fire department, or the National Guard.
Teams will be smoking a variety of meats consisting of chicken, beef, and pork. They will also make side dishes that will be judged. The teams will pay to participate in the contest and they will compete for bragging rights and the coveted “Smokin’ Heroes Title Belt”. We are planning to have 15 teams compete. The public will be invited to view the competition and sample the food for a free will contribution.
The event will need support from our Rotary members to help with fundraising, promotion, setup and cleanup afterwards. We will be looking for sponsorships to help with fundraising.
