GENERAL RON DARDIS, CAREER AND INDUSTRY UPDATE, NOVEMBER 8, 2022
Lieutenant (3 Star) General Ron Dardis was our speaker this week. He covered numerous topics starting with the American Dunes Golf Club (https://americandunesgolfclub.com/) located in Grand Haven, Michigan. American Dunes memorializes the birthplace of the Folds of Honor. It is signature golf course designed by Jack Nicklaus through his golf design company at no cost to the Club. The Club raises awareness and funds for the families of our fallen and disabled veterans.
The General then discussed Leadership Philosophies and Characteristics of Effective Leadership that he has seen and used over time. The 5-C’s of effective leadership were touched on: Calling, Communication, Creativity, Caring & Consistency. His personal leadership philosophies based on life experiences and special events were also mentioned and they included Team, Family, and Treating People with Respect.
Some personal noteworthy experiences and comments were also discussed:
- Growing up in Spencer, Iowa, and playing numerous sports throughout college, including basketball with Phil Jackson, who had an NBA career and coached the Chicago Bulls and Michael Jordan.
- The rewards of coaching his five children in various sports.
- A 43 year distinguished military career:
- Starting with induction while still in college.
- 30 years of flying and instructing in multiple planes including the F100, A7, and F16.
- Named in 1985 as a Top Gun pilot and in the same year received the Top Strafe Pilot in the World Award.
- Forced to eject from an F16 because of engine problems and a resulting broken back that took long months of rehab and resilience.
- Working under multiple Iowa Governors from both parties for nine years as Adjutant General.
In closing, the General credits his family and their support to his success. Additionally, the men and women of the Iowa National Guard, their dedication and support are also major impactors on his success. The General appreciates everyone’s support for the men and women in uniform. The meeting attendees were moved by his excellent presentation.
