More than ever, we need to preserve these spaces and value all they have to offer. Dr. Davey School Holiday BreakfastDecember 12 the Rotary Club of Lincoln and the Ancaster AM Rotary clubs partnered with Hamilton Fire & Police services to serve up a breakfast for 560 kids that attend the Dr. J Edgar Davey Elementary School in North Hamilton. Each child received a nutritious breakfast and then waited excitedly for a special visitor that gifted each with a Christmas present. The Lincoln and Ancaster AM Rotary clubs sponsored the gifts, Tiercon Corp. Automotive Components of Stoney Creek sponsored the breakfast. Chef Brad Rempel of Lincoln prepared the breakfast with a host of volunteers serving the kids. The Fire Chief and the Police Chief along with officers from both services served the breakfast and made merry with the kids. The Police mascot Coppy and the Hamilton Bull Dogs Bruiser also attended to celebrate with the kids. This breakfast has become an annual event for the school and this year was the 19th. year the breakfast was achieved. The breakfast was the idea of Joanne Serkeyn a Hamilton Police officer and a proud Rotarian that is presently the President of the Rotary Club of Lincoln after moving to the Lincoln community a few years ago. A wonderful way to give back to a community that may not have the means to celebrate the holidays.

Great Lakes Watershed CleanupThe Great Lakes Watershed Cleanup initiative is an effort that has grown from a District 7090 service project covering a small portion of Lake Ontario and Erie to a multi-district plan to focus Rotarians’ attention to all 5 of the Great Lakes and streams and waterways feeding them. The goal of this initiative is to make this the single largest cleanup event ever planned and coinciding with Earth Day on the Great Lakes Watershed. Thousands of Rotary volunteers have agreed to participate. We will be joining over one billion people worldwide working on projects together in their communities on Earth Day. On April 21, 2023 the Rotary Club of Lincoln partnered with Downtown Bench Beamsville (BIA) and students from the West Niagara Secondary School, Beamsville Campus and Jacob Beam Elementary School took to downtown Beamsville and did a trash cleanup with a huge impact. The Lincoln Rotary weighed all the trash collected in 1hr. during the #TrashMob with a total of 82.9 kg of trash collected by the students. Thank-you to all the students, teachers and volunteers for making the Lincoln Rotary and Downtown Bench Beamsville Great Lakes Watershed Cleanup such a success. LindsayLindsay joined the RCL in 2018, but had previously been a Club Member with Niagara Falls Sunrise since 2015!
Her reason for joining was because she wanted to be more involved in supporting positive events and contributing to the community that she works and lives in. Joining Rotary made her realize it only takes small efforts from each person to help make a big difference and every member brings skills and knowledge with opportunities to learn for one another |

Say Hi to Sarah! After years of participating in the Rotary Club of Lincoln Lamplighter Tour someone asked her why she wasn't a Rotarian? Soon after, she attended a meeting and realized how many familiar faces she knew and she felt like she was with family so she joined 8 years ago. Sarah works full-time and teaches part-time at Mohawk College in the City School program. She is passionate about creating inclusive learning environments and supporting learners as they overcome barriers to education and employment. |

Say Hello to JoanneShe has been a part of the Rotary Club of Lincoln for 1 year, but was previously a member and past President of Ancaster Rotary AM. In 2009 Joanne attended the Rotary International Conference in Birmingham, England UK and got to listen to Mia Farrell, a Polio survivor and humanitarian as well as Jane Goodall, speak. She was in awe and inspired by fellow Rotarians! We asked Jo why she joined Rotary and here is what she said: "Rotary restored my faith in humanity. Made of selfless individuals working together to support their community and develop international programs, assisting those less fortunate. As a Rotarian my footprint is to leave the world a better place. Rotary has opened up my eyes to the world and how Rotarians all over the world volunteer and donate funds to make a difference in peoples lives. |

New Member Katie! New member alert! This is Katie! Some of you may know her because she's lived and worked in Beamsville for most of her life and has volunteered at several Rotary events including our Sunset Music Series, Wing Ding, & Golf Tournament In 2021, like many, she found herself with extra time on her hands. Still wanting to feel connected and make a difference in our community, she took the plunge and "officially" joined our club that summer. We asked what impact Rotary has had on her life and she said: "I think the impact is just beginning! It has been such a staple in Lincoln (and beyond) for so long. I am excited to bring my strengths, abilities, and ideas to the club and be a part of the growth and next chapter of Rotary." Welcome Katie! |

Do You Recognize Rob!Some of you know him as "Councillor Foster", but to us, he's Rob! His fondest Rotary memories were early morning discussions with Adrie de Laat (who always gave great advice and unfortunately passed away too early) about politics and the problems of the world. He joined Rotary over 20 years ago when Rotarian Walter Mittler invited him to participate and he's been our Foundation chair, past president (2011), and a Paul Harris award winner! He likes the values of Rotary -- and says the 4-way test offers a great way of approaching issues. The Rotary Club of Lincoln is lucky to have him. |

This Is Barb!Say hello to a very proud member who feels good about helping our community - Barb! She's been a staple of the Rotary Club of Lincoln for 10 years and you will often find her organizing our volunteers or signing in players at our golf tournaments. We asked Barb about the impact Rotary has had on her life, and she let us know that when she moved from the USA, she met wonderful people. She and her husband have a very large backyard and love to host Rotary parties there. A fond memory is hosting visiting Rotarians from Australia and California, and being able to introduce them to the Town of Lincoln. Thinking of joining the Rotary Club of Lincoln but are not sure what it takes? You can reach out to us via direct message on our Social Media platforms or check out our Linktree in our bio to find out more! |

Meet Terry & BrendaMeet Terry and Brenda!
They've been Rotarians for 12 and 10 years respectively. They were both very involved with Rotary prior to joining especially helping with The Lamplighter Productions. As they learned more about Rotary and it's impact in our community and in the international community, they wanted to take a more active role. The motto "Service Above Self" was another reason they wanted to join. They have both served as President and look forward to some amazing projects in the future! |

Rotary ValentinesThere are many reasons to Fall In Love with Rotary, we've put together a list of the top 10 reasons:
1. Friendship: In an increasingly complex world, Rotary provides one of the most basic human needs: the need for friendship and fellowship. It is one of two reasons why Rotary began in 1905. 2. Business Development: The second original reason for Rotary’s beginning is business development. Everyone needs to network. Rotary consists of a cross-section of every business community. 3. Personal Growth and Development: Membership in Rotary continues one’s growth and education in human relations and personal development. |

Vocational Service MonthVocational Service is the way Rotary fosters and supports the application of the Ideal of Service to the pursuit of all vocations. The Object of Rotary is a philosophical statement of Rotary’s purpose and the responsibilities of Rotarians. The concept of vocational service is rooted in the Second Object, which calls on Rotarians to “encourage and foster”: Paul Harris wrote: "Each Rotarian is a connecting link between the idealism of Rotary and their trade or profession". |

Great Lakes Watershed Cleanup of West Niagara WebsiteIntroducing our Great Lakes Watershed Cleanup of West Niagara website. Let’s continue to stay Covid safe and continue to think about our watershed and the environment! Here’s our May update. The Great Lakes Watershed Clean-up continues to remain paused due to the lockdown situation in Ontario. The number of new cases continues to be high, and we don’t want any of our partners, volunteers and the public at large to take a chance and get together in groups outside of your immediate families or housemates. Our caution means that we will not be rescheduling the event date until we have a better idea of how things are proceeding in Ontario. While we hope to pick a weekend in June to have the Great Lakes Watershed Clean-up in West Niagara, we will not know until after the 20th. of May if that is even possible. As one of our partner members said, “there is garbage out there and it will be waiting for us”. So, what can we do in the interim? We have some ideas and hope you can join in. |

Paused - Great Lakes Watershed Cleanup of West NiagaraThe Steering Committee has paused the recruitment of volunteers for the West Niagara Great Lakes Watershed Cleanup for Saturday, April 24th. Rotary and all our partners continue to be committed to our environment, however choosing an alternate date for the Cleanup is not reasonable at this time. The safety of our community members is paramount and Government protocols guide our actions. |
||||||
How Many RotariansHow many Rotarians does it take to clean up approximately 12,400 hectares of Great Lakes Watershed flowing into Lake Ontario? Well, apparently 28 + 31 + 8 = 67 Rotarians isn’t quite enough. That is why the Rotary Club of Grimsby in partnership with the Rotary Club of Lincoln have reached out to our joint broader community groups, governments, NGO’s and other service clubs. They are leading a multi-community-wide effort to clean up the watersheds of the West Niagara Area. |

Passing the Baton Rotary Club of LincolnMessage from Past-President Sue Foster As the Rotary year 2019/2020 comes to a close I have been looking back over the last three years as your President and have realized what a great opportunity was given to me to lead such an extremely amazing club. I want to thank District 7090 Governor Bob Artis, Assistant Governor Jeanette Murphy and two of the District Membership team Ralph Montesano & Kevin Crosby for their advice and support during the beginning of this year. Their mentoring and willingness to help was invaluable. In the three years I have been President we have completed many projects that have only been possible by the hard work and passion of the club members present and past. We are truly the “little club that could”. The repayment of $190,000 to the Town of Lincoln over 10 years for the Rotary band shell and improvements at Charles Daley Park and the Fleming Recreation Centre build. The gift of a total of $125,000 to Cave Springs Camp for their new facility and of course the pledge of $100,000 to the Town of Lincoln to help build the Rotary Park which will feature a long anticipated skateboard park and pump track among many other amenities that the park will have to offer our local community. Each year we have participated in the District 7090, District grants helping Community Care of West Niagara, Community Living and our latest project that has just been completed with Convos Youth Zone. The first ever Global Grant awarded to the Rotary Club of Lincoln the Elimination of Avoidable Deaths of Mothers and Newborns in the Highlands of Guatemala, participation in other Global Grants as part of the Niagara Cluster group and of course the continued support of Khazimula Children’s Project in South Africa. Our little club since its inception has contributed well over a million dollars back to our local community and our global community. A very impressive record that we all can be very proud of. I am also extremely proud of this club for stepping up during this Covid-19 pandemic and approving a budget of $8000 to help services in our community that are needed more than ever. We are truly giving back to our local community and being true Rotarians as we follow the motto “Service Above Self” As Past President of the Rotary Club of Lincoln I would like to welcome Dave Klassen as our new club President for the year 2020/21. |

Galexy Tablets for Long Term Care in NiagaraNiagara Rotary Clubs Help Long-Term Care Residents Communicate with Loved OnesSt. Catharines May 25 2020 — Six Rotary Clubs in Niagara (The Rotary Clubs of St. Catharines Lakeshore, St. Catharines, Niagara Falls Sunrise, Fonthill, Lincoln and Welland) have joined forces to supply Samsung Tablets to each of the Long-Term Care Homes managed by the Regional Municipality of Niagara. As we are all too aware, the residents of these term care facilities are in "lock-down", unable to see or speak to their loved ones outside of the home other than waving at a window. COVID-19 has imprisoned the senior generation of families, especially at a time when they need their family’s words, smiles and love. Local Rotary Clubs across Niagara wanted to help. After contacting the Regions LTC coordinator, who canvassed all their facilities, it was agreed that on-line communication was a real need and that all 8 of their facilities wanted tablets for their residents use. Based on this research, each of Linhaven (St. Catharines), The T. Roy Adams Regional Centre for Dementia Care (St. Catharines), Deer Park Villa (Grimsby), Upper Canada Lodge (Niagara‐on‐the‐Lake), The Meadows of Dorchester (Niagara Falls), The Woodlands of Sunset (Welland), D.H. Rapelje Lodge (Welland) and Northland Pointe (Port Colborne) have received 10” Samsung tablets perfect for residents to share, contact and talk with their families and friends. For more information, and individual Rotary Club contact information if desired, please contact Sue Foster, President of the Rotary Club of Lincoln or by email at suefoz@gmail.com or www.lincolnrotary.ca About Rotary People of Action, Rotary is where neighbors, friends, and problem-solvers share ideas, join leaders, and take action to create lasting change. Rotary connects 1.2 million members from more than 35,000 Rotary clubs in almost every country in the world. Each day, our members pour their passion, integrity, and intelligence into completing projects that have a lasting impact. For more than 110 years, we’ve bridged cultures and connected continents to champion peace, fight illiteracy and poverty, promote clean water and sanitation, and fight disease. Rotary has been working to eradicate polio for more than 30 years. As a founding partner of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, we've reduced polio cases by 99.9 percent since our first project to vaccinate children in the Philippines in 1979. |

AGM Presidents AddressPersonally it has been a fascinating year with the resignation of our club President in August and being asked to remain as President for a third term. After some scrambling and some great support from the board members, I feel we are back on track and in a very good place. More importantly I want to congratulate the club with the achievement of two very significant community projects. The Cave Springs Legacy Hall project and its $25,000 community challenge has been a great success and has promoted the camp in the community. After a discussion with Niki Inch the Fundraising chair she has updated me with the progress so far: "We have come a long way and are on schedule for completion in late winter. We have been able to rent the building to the Valhalla Project for 20 weeks through the course of next year. They will be our first renters of the building March 20th for two weeks. We are pretty excited to be working with them. They work with first responders, (fire, police, ambulance) and military who are suffering from PTSD who require a therapy dog to get through the day. The aim is to bring the dog together with the individual in an intensive two week training period which will be held in Legacy Hall. We will be able to still conduct programming and bring schools onto the property while they are in the hall, which means we can still provide our regular programming to the community. As far as the matching challenge goes...I was just about to write to you about that. We just received a significant donation on Friday from an individual which brought us to $24,999.35. I hope this is close enough to be considered the matching for $25,000 LOL. We have had a great deal of success with this. I know of at least two other significant donations that are coming to us with this in mind. We can't thank you enough." The Rotary Park name was approved by Town of Lincoln Council in October and negotiations for a formal agreement will begin in January with the town. The park will begin construction in the spring of 2020 where the first phase, skateboard park, pump track and Val Fleming Butterfly Park will commence. Sarah Ane from the town will be joining us January 14 for a presentation and update around Rotary Park. Another successful Sunset Music Series and Lamplighter Tour have concluded and I would like to thank again John Maynard & Martha Kralt for stepping up to the plate and taking the lead in these two significant events to our club. Five Rotary Super Hero pins were awarded by myself to Cathy McNiven, John Maynard, Martha Kralt for taking the lead for our fundraisers and making them so successful. I also awarded Super Hero pins to Dave Fisk and Phil Goodwin for their efforts as part of our fundraising teams, without their efforts the events would not have been as successful. Our Global Grant Eliminating Preventable Maternal & Infant Death in Guatemala was approved and the project will start in January 2020. Our District Grant Convos Youth Zone Private Office Space was approved. Working together, even though we are a small club we are achieving a lot of really good things for our community and communities around the world. Just recently our club was recognized at the District Level with Five Awards
There are still lots of things in the works for this club and with help and volunteering from each and every one of you, we are and will continue to make a difference in this world by investing in kids and community. Stay tuned, think about how you would like to participate, consider becoming a board member, volunteer for a committee or help with a fundraiser that interests you. Talk to friends and acquaintances, bring them to a meeting and be proud that you are a member of the Rotary Club of Lincoln. |

RYLA UPDATE Geet Chahil
RYLA UPDATE By GEET CHAHIL Geet is no stranger to the Rotary Club of Lincoln. Geet was recommended by the guidance team at BDSS to participate in the Rotary SLAPSHOT program and participated representing our club. SLAPSHOT is a weekend long program of personal & leadership activities for 100 High School student leaders, 15-18 yrs. old. Our Lincoln club sponsors registration for two BDSS student leaders as selected by BDSS staff. Geet graduated from BDSS as valedictorian of his graduating class and received the Rotary Medalist award. Award recipients are chosen for their demonstration of "Service Above Self" in their high school leadership activities while achieving high academic success throughout their 4 years at BDSS. Geet was approached by Sue Foster at The Town of Lincoln Good Citizen awards where Geet was a recipient of an award for his work with Niagara Strong. The club was looking for RYLA participants and Sue suggested Geet apply. The team of Gayle & Paul Roth interviewed the applicants and Geet was chosen to be sponsored by the club to attend RYLA. RYLA is an International Youth Leadership development program, District 7090 takes place over 6 days at State University of New York in Fredonia NY. It is an inspiring personal development seminar for young people 19-25 yrs. Geet shared some of his experiences with the club and called RYLA a life changing experience for him. He has quit his job, switched career paths since returning and is attending Mohawk College this fall in film making and broadcasting. Geet is the creator of an on-line effort focusing on mental health for youth. Niagara Strong has done fundraising and is selling a line of clothing to help raise funds. One of the first attempts was to raise money for Pathstones a Distress Centre in St, Catharines catering to mental health clients. A video was posted , it was shared by a parents group in Beamsville and the video went viral on social media. the effort raised $4000 in six hours to be donated to Pathstones. Please check out https://niagarastrong.ca/ for more information and to support Geet in this effort to bring awareness to youth mental health. Peter Juhlke Classification TalkPeter grew up in Vineland as part of a large Juhlke clan. He worked various jobs in cement work and landscaping before attending Emmanuel Bible College in Kitchener. Peter wanted to become a youth worker. While attending Emmanuel College he met his future wife Annie at the College. They have been married 6 years and have two children Maximus & Rosie. Peter's family moved around a lot and he worked at various cement work jobs in Brampton and Durham. He started working with YFC in Tillsonberg, where his job was fundraising. He found he wasn't very good at fundraising in a town where he had no family and didn't know a lot of people in the community. He decided that he and his family would return to Vineland where he worked with his brother in his brother's company as a logistics manager. While working there he started volunteering at the Upper Deck Youth Centre. Peter accepted a job at Upper Deck 4 yrs. ago as a youth worker and a fundraiser. Once again he was involved in fundraising but found it much easier in his home town where he had family and connections in the community. He enjoys his work as a youth leader and likes the idea of hanging out with youth and helping them get through life hurdles and finding employment. Peter also spends Tuesday & Thursday mornings volunteering in grade six classes to help kids that need some extra help with school. Welcome Peter and thanks for reaching out to the club to inquire about membership. We cannot wait to work with you in one or many of our club youth initiatives. |

Exciting News Our Global Grant Has Been Approved Eliminating Maternal and Infant Mortality In Guatemala For the first time 12 Niagara Rotary Clubs decided to work together to make a Bigger Difference in the world by pooling our resources and applying for a Global Grant. We formed a cluster of Rotary Clubs including St. Catharines South, St. Catharines Lakeshore, Niagara Falls Sunrise, St. Catharines, Fonthill, Niagara Falls Canada, Grimsby, Grimsby Noon, NOTL, Fort Erie, Welland & Lincoln and pledged $1000 US to be used for a chosen project. After presentations of four worthy projects and a vote the Rotary Club of Lincoln's project under the leadership of Alice Klamer was the successful recipient of support from the "cluster". By using the resources of the Rotary International Foundation we used the $12,000 seed money and applied for matching grants from the District, Foundation and Canadian Government. After applying all the grants our seed money grew to $84,500 Us to be used towards the project in Guatemala. The Rotary Club of Lincoln just received approval and we can now move forward in completing the first phase of training midwives in Guatemala. The Pink Flamingo of Change was definitely at work with the whole new attitude of Rotary Clubs working together to maximize their resources. |

Lincoln's Pathway to Prosperity a place to GROW a place to PROSPER a place to BELONG Economic Development Officer for the Town of Lincoln Paul Di Ianni and Lincoln Councillor Paul MacPherson joined the club this morning to present a summary of the Town of Lincoln's Economic Development Strategy & Action Plan. Follow the LINK provided for the media release to celebrate International Economic Development week May 6-11, 2019. Building a Community VisionIn 2017, the Town of Lincoln invited staff, residents and businesses from various sectors to develop a long-term vision for Lincoln. With a clear cut vision of the future, Council and others will be able to make decisions between all the possible courses of actions that could be taken to build the communities. There are many possibilities and the Town needs to ensure it makes the right choices for the people of Lincoln. Developing a vision statement that represents what Lincoln looks like, who will be living, working, learning and playing here in the future assists decision making, both day-to-day and long-term. After significant consultation through focus groups and an online survey, a long-term community vision statement was created: A Place to Grow, A Place to Prosper, A Place to Belong |

Rotary International Youth Exchange Program Sue Foster & Jeanette Murphy Jeanette Murphy joined our club March 12 to give us an understanding of the Rotary International Youth Exchange from the perspective of participant, host & District level participation in the Exchange Program. Rotary clubs host exchanges for students ages 15-19 in more than 100 countries.https://www.rotary.org/en/our-programs/youth-exchanges/details
Jeanette 41 years ago applied to be a Rotary Exchange participant and after an application and interview process was selected by the Rotary Club of Grimsby as their first Rotary Exchange participant. (OUTGOING). Jeanette was matched and selected to go to Australia. After a 23 hr. flight she arrived in Australia in a resort town to spend a year in this very different country. She explains it was an experience of a lifetime and she really did not want to return home. Upon returning home she felt that everyone at home had changed but soon came to the realization that she was the one that had changed. With the experience she personally grew and had a better understanding of the world. Fast Forward 30 years, while participating in a curling spiel where she competed against a Rotary team she renewed a relationship with Rotary and was asked if she would become a member of the Rotary Club that had sponsored her those many years ago. Jeanette became a member and became an advocate of Youth Exchange and participated as a volunteer, councillor and host for many youth exchange students over the years. She has formed life long friendships with some of the students that participated from other countries. Currently Jeanette is the District 7090 Vice-chair for Central Europe for the Rotary International Youth Exchange program. Jeanette has made Youth Exchange a passion in her life and is hoping that our clubs might consider hosting exchange students once again. Working together with other local clubs hopefully we can make this happen.

Hidden Treasure: The Millennium ForestThe Millennium Forest (a commemorative gift to Lincoln) In 1999 the Lincoln Garden Club, the Rotary Club of Lincoln and the Town of Lincoln were investigating an appropriate Millennium Project. Dr. Emil Andersen proposed the idea of a Millennium Forest. The University of Guelph’s, Dr. C. J. Swanton, Chair of the Plant Agriculture Department, felt that it was an excellent project. Not only did the University suggest founding the forest on their grounds, they further made a commitment to look after the forest and maintain it as a courtesy. The Objective of the Millennium Forest: “To provide a permanent living Millennium project that would provide beauty and enjoyment for the community, enhancement of the environment, useful information for those interested in trees and commemorates persons in the community.” The University of Guelph offered a 3-acre plot which seemed ideal. The land was the Northeast corner of the Home Farm property on Victoria Ave. The south half had previously been homes and gardens of 3 research scientists working at the station (Dr. Emil Anderson was one of these). The North half of the property was the Horticultural Research Institute of Ontario dump and Lake Ontario. This is part of the land donated to the Government of Ontario in 1906 by Moses F. Rittenhouse for horticultural research. It is easily accessible from the QEW (exit 57). By Spring 2000 the project was ready to start. The two Clubs, along with several helpers from the Town and University and many non-club members worked for many weeks to clear the unwanted trees and brush. Together, Dr. Anderson, a Rotary Club member and Lincoln Garden Club representatives began selecting and sourcing the trees as well as publicizing the project. Alongside 8 previously established mature trees remaining in the Forest, 135 different deciduous and evergreen trees were selected on the basis of their ability to grow, survive, beautify, have historical value or features of particular interest in this Carolinian ecological zone. Some trees will live 200+ years. Some trees flower in Spring. Some have tremendous Fall colour. All trees will serve as a commemorative to the beloved family member, friend and prominent person for which they were purchased. The Millennium Forest Stone A striking 6.5-foot natural granite stone was placed at the southeast corner of the Forest. It is engraved as follows: Millennium Forest A project of Lincoln Horticultural Society Rotary Club of Lincoln University of Guelph Town of Lincoln A.D. 2000 The Town of Lincoln covered most of the cost of the Stone with the Rotary Club and The Lincoln Garden Club covering the balance. Funding for the Forest The sale of memorial trees at $200 per tree which included a plaque bearing the name of the tree and a 3-line inscription provided most of the funds. The trees went on sale in the Fall 2000 and sold extremely well. Publicity by word of mouth, a flyer created for the Forest and local newspaper stories proved very effective. A cheque for $17,500 from the Ontario Trillium Foundation was generously received and put to immediate use. Fencing, a beautiful wheelchair accessible pathway winding through the Forest, four benches, and some of the bulldozing work were benefited from these funds. Planting the memorial trees commenced in late Spring 2001. Dr. Emil Andersen Memorial Sign The Dr. Emil Andersen Memorial Sign was added in 2011. Dr. Anderson was the driving force behind the Millennium Forest. He passed away in 2010 at the age of 94. On October 26, 2011 a dedication ceremony was held in the Forest honoring Dr Andersen’s many contributions to horticulture, the scientific community and the Town of Lincoln. The Andersen Family provided the funds ($1,700.00 memorial fund set up in his name at the time of his death). His daughter and grandson were at the ceremony. This sign shows the name and location of every tree in the Forest and is at the southwest entrance to the Forest, off the parking lot. The Millennium Forest and its 135 different trees has flourished and provides a beautiful and noble commemorative living canopy for future generations as well as everyday, present day enjoyment for the current generation. Beyond that, it also serves as an educational resource for botanists, students and all other visitors. But, through the years, a number of trees have been replaced due to dry summers, wind damage, weed whacking, disease and insects. Last year 3 trees, were replaced. Cooperative work between Vineland Research employees and volunteers saw these trees cut down and replanted. A stable source of financing is needed to augment the dedicated work of both past and present volunteers who keep the Forest flourishing. More Info Lincoln Garden Club & Horticultural Society |

Flag Raising World Polio Day 2018 Rotary Club of Lincoln marked historic progress toward a polio-free world, while urging community support to end the paralyzing disease Event among thousands to be held by Rotary across the globe on World Polio Day – 24 Oct. Rotary members in Lincoln are among millions reaching out on World Polio Day to raise awareness, funds and support to end polio – a vaccine preventable disease that still threatens children in parts of the world today. Since Rotary and its partners launched the Global Polio Eradication Initiative 30 years ago, the incidence of polio has plummeted by more than 99.9 percent, from about 350,000 cases a year to just 22 cases in 2017. To sustain this progress, and protect all children from polio, Rotary has committed to raising US$50 million per year in support of global polio eradication efforts. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will match Rotary’s commitment 2:1. Without full funding and political commitment, this paralyzing disease could return to previously polio-free countries, putting children everywhere at risk. WE ARE “THIS CLOSE” ROTARIANS, PEOPLE OF ACTION, CHANGEMAKERS Rotary has contributed more than US$1.8 billion to ending polio since 1985, including $2000 US annually contributed by the Rotary Club of Lincoln |

2018 Volunteer Recognition ReceptionThe Town of Lincoln held a celebration intended to recognize all community volunteers and Good citizen nominees and thank them for investing their time in the community. The Rotary Club of Lincoln nominated Nancy Simon & Janice Bovine for their work with the Lamplighter Tour Production. Nancy Simon: one of the over one hundred community volunteers that volunteer with the Lamplighter Tour annually. For each tour, at least five venues must be secured in the immediate community chosen each year and Nancy has been the coordinator for researching and securing these venues. Nancy's efforts go well beyond the task of procuring venues. Over twelve years , her involvement includes researcher, greeter, writing venue descriptions and more recently, lamplighter guide and script-writer. Lincoln Rotary recognizes Nancy Simon as an extraordinary Lamplighter Tour champion and extends great appreciation for her continuing dedication to the success of the production each year. Janice Bovine: Over 14 years The Lamplighter Tour has served to bring our community's history to life. At the end of each of the twenty-two tours that happen over a four consecutive day period "Miss Nettie's Tea Room" welcomes guests to relax and reflect on the experience while enjoying a hot beverage and a selection of delicious treats. Since 2010 Janice has shared her passion and skill for baking and has produced hundreds of dozens of cookies and squares to delight Lamplighter throngs. She has been mainstay working behind the scene to serve some 550 Lamplighter guests annually. The Rotary Club of Lincoln and the Lamplighter Tour Production Team are ever thankful to Janice for her generous support for this community project. |

Outstanding Business Achievement AwardsMembers of the Lincoln Chamber, Mayor Sandra Easton, Deborah (with the award)& David Dueck, Sue Foster President Rotary Club of Lincoln The PATHWAYS TO OPPORTUNITY AWARD represents a unique collaboration among Rotarians, educators and businesses in our community. As Rotarians, we channel our commitment to service at home and abroad through five AVENUES OF SERVICE. Two of these avenues are VOCATIONAL SERVICE and YOUTH SERVICE. So, it is in our service commitment that the Rotary Club of Lincoln is pleased to work with the Chamber and Beamsville District Secondary School to celebrate businesses that go out of their way to support co-operative education. Each year, approximately 110 Grade 11 and 12 BDSS students spend between one and four periods of each school day over four months in the workplace. This would not be possible without the voluntary participation of some 50 businesses and organizations in our community. In essence, they are providing ‘pathways to opportunity’ --- experiences that help students find their way to post-secondary employment, career and education opportunities. To select the Pathways Award recipient, our BDSS Co-op Education Department uses the following criteria...
I’m very pleased to announce that the 2018 Pathways Award recipient is CONVERSATIONS CAFÉ & BISTRO. |

New Rotaract NiagaraNew Rotaract Niagara Club Induction We are excited to announce that the Rotaract Club of Niagara became an official club this past Thursday, pins and all. The induction meeting was held at Rose City Kids in Welland, where club executives and members received the honorary bell, gavel, and banner. Rotaract exists under the umbrella of the Rotary club, and consists of young professionals and students that wish to make a difference both locally and globally. There are currently over 9,500 Rotaract clubs in 177 countries worldwide, and Rotaract Niagara is excited to become a part of this growing number. The Niagara club was chartered on October 26th, 2017, where the members established Naasson Huyler as their president, as well as their vision and mission statements and club motto, service over self. The club is looking forward to getting actively involved in the community in order to meet pressing needs that exist both locally and internationally. The new club is both excited and grateful for all of the support and enthusiasm that it received at the induction. Rotarians from sponsoring clubs (Fonthill, St. Catharine’s, and Niagara Falls Sunrise clubs) participated, as well as current District Governor Reg Madison, and many others. Anyone who is interest in getting involved can contact the club through email (rotaractniagara@gmail.com) or facebook (@RotaractNiagara). * On Thursday January 18th, 2018, Nasson Huyler, as well as Vice President Ryan Huckla, Secretary Tyler Neal, and Treasurer Dale Hall, were inducted by DG Reg Madison and the president of the Fonthill Rotary Club, Paul Snack. |

World Polio DayAs you all know, polio eradication is the number one priority of Rotary and our Foundation. It has been a historic year for polio eradication, with unprecedented new support and fewer cases of polio than ever before. As announced at our Atlanta convention in June, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has increased its commitment to our polio eradication initiative, and will match 2:1 all Rotary contributions up to 50 million dollars, for the next three years. If Rotarians raise $50 million per year, the Gates Foundation will match this with $100 million: resulting in $150 million for polio eradication in each of the three years. In total, more than one billion dollars in new funding for polio were pledged by governments and key donors in Atlanta. |

Scholarship OpportunityExciting news, our District has chosen to allocate $4000 for one scholarship available to offer to students currently enrolled in their first year of post-secondary study. There is no restriction as to where there school is. This new grant structure gives Rotarians greater flexibility in sponsoring the next generation of leaders. The club remains the point of contact for the applicants and must approve the scholar and submit the application to the District with its endorsement. A club can have as many applicants as they can find (as long as they are not a lineal relative of a Rotarian). Prospective applicants, download the application from this page. To submit, contact your local area Rotary club. Clubs, contact Stephen Keefe, Rotary District 7090 Scholarships Chair, if you have additional questions. |

RYLA Experience 2017Our Youngest Rotarian Sarah Bradshaw (second from the left) was sponsored by the club to attend! What a treat it was to hear and see Sarah Bradshaw's presentation on her experience at the RYLA, the Rotary Youth Leadership event in June, 2017 . The event took place in Fredonia, NY. Sarah's power point presentation took us through an exciting week of day by day activities. Sarah was on the team which planned the RYLA dinner which Sue Foster Lincoln Club President and Margaret Andrewes Assistant Governor District 7090 attended to support Sarah with her RYLA experience. The team came up with a very creative place mat design. Her personal learnings were: 1. Don't just leave your life on cruise control, go after it. 2. Commitment first, answers second. 3. Facilitating conscensus 4. Be yellow 5. Warm and Fuzzies: Other participants and leaders wrote notes about why the participant is awesome. Sarah pulls out her unread notes when she needs encouragement. She shared two random notes with us. Thank you Sarah, for an excellent presentation, and for your warmth and enthusiasm. We are indeed fortunate to have you as a member of Lincoln Rotary. You are AWESOME indeed. |

1st. Annual Lincoln Soap Box DerbyThe Rotary Club of Lincoln has committed to sponsoring The SUPER KIDS Classic portion of the 1st. Annual Lincoln Soap Box Derby being held August12, 2017. Super Kids was introduced to Canada in 2008 to open the doors of inclusion for kids and youth with cognitive, developmental and physical challenges. With over 25 years of involvement in the sport of soap box derby racing and seeing many kids captive on the sidelines watching siblings and friends racing, it was felt that Super Kids was the very thing that would open the doors to these awesome kids to the sport. Unlike regular racing, Super Kids racers are not required to build and own their own soap box derby cars. The special two seater cars used in this program are provided by the local organization. Since its introduction to Canada, nearly 20 special needs kids have had the opportunity to represent their communities and Canada in Akron at the World Championships. In 2015 a Canadian Super Kid won the National Super Kids World Championships and a Canadian racer was the 2016 World Champion runner-up. But the bottom line is all of these kids got to proclaim to the world, " LOOK AT ME ! I'M A SOAP BOX DERBY RACER !!! " CHECK OUT THE FACEBOOK PAGE FOR MORE INFORMATION AND REGISTRATION

35th. Paul Harris Fellowship
PICTURED LEFT TO RIGHT PAUL ROTH (Lincoln Rotarian) MARY ANN SCHLABACH (Newest Paul Harris Fellow) & Rotary President Jennifer Turner Rotary Club of Lincoln --- 35th. Paul Harris Fellow In 1966, Mary Ann Schlabach and her husband, Beland, began extending hospitality and a helping hand to Jamaicans who were working on the Smith Farm in Vineland Station. Mary Ann became a driving force in the organization of the Caribbean Workers Outreach Program (CWOP) established in 1992.. While Mary Ann has served CWOP in key leadership roles including treasurer and more recently, program coordinator, she has contributed immeasurably through her endless acts of kindness. The workers know her as “Sister Mary Ann”. Over five decades, Mary Ann Schabach’s tireless work and devotion as a humanitarian has enriched the lives of thousands of Caribbean men and women employed as seasonal workers on Niagara farms. Rotary is an organization of people united worldwide to provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world. Paul Harris, a young lawyer, and three of his friends founded Rotary in 1905 in Chicago, Illinois, USA. Following his death in 1947, The Rotary Foundation created Paul Harris Fellow recognition in his honour. The heart of Rotary is Service Above Self. The Rotary Club of Lincoln is proud to honour Mary Ann Schlabach as a Paul Harris Fellow in tribute to her shared purpose with the objectives of Rotary.

Pathways To Opportunity AwardPATHWAYS TO OPPORTUNITY CO-OPERATIVE EDUCATION EMPLOYER RECOGNITION AWARD This unique award was initiated in 2006 by the Rotary Club of Lincoln in partnership with Beamsville District Secondary School (BDSS) and Lincoln Chamber of Commerce. Its purpose is to celebrate Town of Lincoln businesses or not-for-profit organizations that demonstrate outstanding support for the BDSS Co-operative Education Program. The award evolved from Lincoln Rotary’s commitment to VOCATIONAL SERVICE – to provide the community links necessary for secondary school students to find “Pathways to Opportunity” through meaningful experiences that will help lead them to suitable education and work opportunities upon graduation. Play and Collect , an online retail business serving customers around the world, was selected as the 2017 award recipient. Its products include a wide variety of games, puzzles and collectibles in multiple formats sourced globally and distributed from its warehouse located in Beamsville. This is where co-op students are employed to support the packaging of some 400 online orders per day, assist with storage of the substantial product inventory, and tend to the general upkeep of the facility. Students are integral to the demands of this modern business. playandcollect.com Photo caption: Kerry Rorison, Co-op Teacher, & Jennifer Turner, Lincoln Rotary President, presented Beverly Taylor, Play and Collect General Manager, with the 2017 Pathways Award at the Lincoln Chamber’s annual Business Awards Gala on March 27. |

Egg Farmers of OntarioHarry Pelissero visited our club to let us know "What's Happening" in the egg farming industry and to let us know about a new process being implemented in the egg producing business to enhance and streamline egg and chicken production.
He outlined current process of determining which eggs go to hatchery for production off eggs and which eggs go for the production of broiler chickens to be sold for consumption or further processing.
A new process has been designed and pattened with 99% accuracy to determine if eggs are female, male or non-fertile so the eggs can be sent to the appropriate areas for production. Females to the hatchery for egg production, males to be raised and used for table processing.
21 dozen eggs/capita are processed in Canada. Eggs are a good source of protein and are affordable. A very enjoyable and interesting insight into chicken and egg production.

Harry also provided all attendees a microwave egg cooker with recipes and ideas for the enjoyment of eggs.

What Is Rotary? We are 1.2 million neighbors, friends, and community leaders who come together to create positive, lasting change in our communities and around the world. Our differing occupations, cultures, and countries give us a unique perspective. Our shared passion for service helps us accomplish the remarkable. WHAT MAKES US DIFFERENT?Our distinct point of view and approach gives us unique advantages:
HOW DO WE WORK?Our impact starts with our members—people who work tirelessly with their clubs to solve some of our communities' toughest challenges. Their efforts are supported by Rotary International, our member association, and The Rotary Foundation, which turns generous donations into grants that fund the work of our members and partners around the world. Rotary is led by our members—responsible leaders who help to carry forward our organization's mission and values in their elected roles. HOW DID WE GET HERE?We've been making history and bringing our world closer together for over 100 years. Since forming in 1905, we've taken on some of the world's toughest challenges and helped a wide range of international and service organizations—from the UN to Easter Seals. Rotary Foundation Receives Top HonorThe Rotary Foundation, charitable arm of Rotary, has been named the 2016 Outstanding Foundation by the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP). “While almost everyone is familiar with Rotary, not everyone may realize just how much an impact Rotary and the Rotary Foundation have had on countless people and communities across the globe,” The foundation has seen assets grow from an initial $26.50 donation nearly a century ago to $1 billion today, with more than $3 billion spent on various initiatives. The Rotary Foundation has made the global eradication of polio its top priority over the decades. Beginning with the launch of the PolioPlus program in 1985, the foundation has contributed more than $1.6 billion to fighting the crippling disease and has advocated governments and other foundations to contribute an additional $9 billion to the cause. Polio is currently on the verge of becoming just the second human disease to be eradicated, after smallpox, with a 99.9 percent decrease in cases since PolioPlus launched. Other foundation priorities have included addressing hunger, poverty, illiteracy and peace. The foundation launched the Rotary Peace Fellows program in 2002, providing up to 100 fellows per year the opportunity to participate in a master’s degree or certificate program at one of Rotary’s Peace Centers. The foundation will formally receive the award in the spring during AFP’s 2017 International Fundraising Conference in San Francisco, Calif., on April 30 through May 2. The recognition comes while the foundation is in the process of preparing for its centennial year. The Rotary Foundation plans to ring in 100 years by raising $300 million by July. |
||||||
The Power of The Rotary Foundation When I reported on the fact that Lincoln Rotary had completed its 2016-17 commitment to PolioPlus, I neglected to share what Karen had to say about the total value of our donation, which truly demonstrates ‘the power’ of The Rotary Foundation (TRF)!
Please know that Lincoln Rotary’s gift of $2,000 USD to PolioPlus Fund will be matched by both the Gates Foundation and Government of Canada to equal $10,000.00. Well Done!

Mike Rodrigues' classification talkMIKE RODRIGUES
It was a delight to hear Mike Rodrigues' Classification talk.
Mike was born in Simcoe, Ontario and grew up in Turkey Point where his father owned and operated a bar. Portuguese is his first language. He attended Holy Trinity High School in Simcoe. During summers, while growing up he worked in the tobacco fields in the area. He went to Brock University and studied Finance. After graduation he joined Edward Jones Investments and moved to Cochrane, Alberta. Two years later he came to Niagara and during that time knocked on 10,000 doors trying to make contacts. It was in Niagara Falls there that he came to know committed Rotarian John whom he admired. John manages a 140 million dollar portfoliio for Edward Jones, and is Mike's mentor. In March Mike moved to Beamsville to the Edward Jones office. He and his brother own a home and they live there and rent out their basement.
His financial advice : Save as much as you can. Include a rental property . Pay yourself first.
When asked how he would try to attract younger members, he said he was going to be vocal to others about Rotary and focus on the benefit of self development.

RI MINUTE October 25, 2016More than 23,000 viewers in 24 countries tuned in to Rotary's World Polio Day event, streamed live on 24 October. Health officials including James Alexander, senior medical epidemiologist for the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, gave an update on the polio eradication campaign and praised Rotary's achievements to date. Rotary has contributed more than $1.2 billion to polio eradication since 1979. For World Polio Day, Rotary released $44.7 million in grants to fight the disease in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. In addition to the update, the event included entertainment by reggae star Ziggy Marley and Tessanne Chin, 2013 winner of the TV show "The Voice.
Minda Dentler, a polio survivor and Ironman competitor, describes her personal battle against the disease. Dentler, who contracted polio as a child in India, in 2013 became the first female handcyclist to complete the grueling Ironman World Championship.

Give Polio the Finger!Today October 24 is #WorldPolioDay so join me in giving polio the finger!
Why give it the finger you ask?
Well purple ink on the pinkie finger tells both the vaccination volunteers and the vaccinated child’s neighborhood that one more person is safe from the horror of polio.
It is more than a way to identify who has been immunized. It is a symbol of defiance against a crippling disease and a symbol of hope for a polio free world. No one is safe until all are safe.
So let's Give Polio the Finger and End Polio Now.

Copy of The District Governor's visitPictured left to right Jennifer Turner President, Marlee Diehl District 7090 Governor. Alice Klamer Past-President
Jennifer Turner enthusiastically introduced our special Rotarian,Margaret Andrews, one of 19 Assistant District Governors, who has responsibility for Area Five. Margaret Andrews then warmly introduced our District Governor Marlee Diehl who is Governor to the 19 areas in District 7090, each of which encompass 3-5 clubs. Marlee has been a Rotarian for 20 years. She was president of the Hamilton Club when she met Bill Diehl at a President's Training Conference .Bill and Marlee are from the Rotary Club of Albion.
Marlee grew up in Caledonia and worked in recruiting and job placement. When she married Bill she moved to Albion, N.Y. where she is a ruling elder of her church and loves sailing and biking.
She began her speech by referring to Rotary President John Germ from Chattanooga, Tennessee. The theme for his term is " Serving Humanity". She asked us to imagine an upside down triangle and reminded us that each club is a grassroots organization. She said that we must be able to grow our clubs and include others in our projects. We should use the strengths we have and encouraged us to take advantage of Rotary7090.org webinars.
John Germ's goal is to get new members and grow our clubs. He acknowledges that a club cannot be all things to all people, and therefore encourages satellite clubs which meet when they can. It takes 20 people to make a new club.
Rotary International
Next year we will be celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Foundation. The Foundation started with one president who said " I have a surplus". The surplus was earmarked for an endowment for the Foundation. That surplus was $26.50. Since that time 3 billion dollars have gone to the world for the good work of Rotary. This year our district is asking that each member give an extra $26.50.
An example of a project which is planned is a photo album with 100 pages. Each page will celebrate a Foundation Event. eg a club's cheques spread out on a table and photographed.
District Conference: "Educate, Engage, Enjoy" October 21-23 at Batavia Downs Casino, Batavia, N.Y. .A fancy hats event will happen on the Saturday night when all pretend they are at the Kentucky Derby.
International Convention June 10-14 Atlanta, Georgia. Theme: "100 years of doing good" Marlee encouraged everyone to attend the International Convention and was pleased to hear four persons were already registered from our club.
Marlee also told us : " Rotary ignites me and excites me"

Peanut Butter ProjectGuest speaker: Ralph Spencer SunUp Rotary Club, Palm Springs, California
PROJECT PEANUT BUTTER
3.5 million kids die every year with SAM: Severe Acute Malnutrition across the globe. Their brains and bodies do not develop properly. 80% of Somalian children die of SAM.
The Peanut butter Project supplies " ready to use therapeutic food" Dr. Mark Mineri was working with children in Malowi. He was trying to cure their malnutrition using a milk product. From the product Nutella, he came up with the idea of a product made of peanut butter, sugar, vitamins and minerals. it did not need to be cooked or refrigerated and could be transported by mothers and fed in small amounts. Immediately, upon using this new product his success rate rose from 25% TO 95 % .
The project has been started in a few countries, but recently Rotary has taken the Peanut Butter project to Ghana with the goal of giving it to 50,000 children every day. Rotary International has just approved a global grant of $177,851.00 to two Rotary Clubs in Ghana. The project is sustainable. The product is grown by local farmers, produced and manufactured locally, and individuals are trained to dispense it locally. It is fed to children from 6 months to 6 years three times a day. ( one spoonful at a time)

Point of PridePoint of Pride: June 7, 2016
One of the most important announcements at the Rotary Convention in Seoul was made by Trustee Mike McGovern, Chair of the International Polio Plus Committee. He stated that for the first time in the Pakistan’s history, all the previous month's environmental samples for polio have tested negative — a significant sign of progress in the campaign to eradicate polio in Pakistan. Samples are taken from sewage at various locations. This is as or more important than having no polio cases reported. It shows potentially there is no undetected circulating polio virus.

FORT MCMURRAY RELIEF FUND ESTABLISHED
The Rotary District 5370 Charitable Foundation has established the “Fort McMurray Fire Relief Fund” to assist in the rebuilding of that city following this tragic fire. Donations may be from individuals or corporations. Rotary clubs may wish to facilitate this process by collecting donations, and then forwarding either the individual cheques or a cheque drawn on the club’s account for the total amount, along with a list of the donors and their addresses and postal codes.

Paul Harris Fellowship Awards 2016The Rotary Club of Lincoln Foundation Committee is pleased to announce that Diana Bujas & Tony Van Es were honoured as the club’s 2016 Paul Harris Fellowship Award recipients at a reception at Redstone Winery March 22, 2016
Diana Bujas
Diana is a longstanding and devoted “Friend of Lincoln Rotary”. Whatever Rotary Bob is up to, you can always find Diana working beside him and sometimes in front.
Since the inception of the Lamplighter Tour in 2004, the success of the popular tearoom is in large part because of Diana’s leadership. Playing the role of the legendary “Miss Nettie”, the spirited tearoom hostess, she greets some 550 guests during the 4-day run of the production each year. Behind the scenes, she is the mastermind and chief organizer of everything needed to operate the tearoom. She bakes, recruits and schedules the volunteers, arranges themed decorations, ensures that food handling regulations are met, and so much more. This is a year round commitment, which Diana cheerfully and very capably manages voluntarily.
Similarily, with Lincoln Rotary’s Wing Ding: Chicken Wings & Blues Fest, launched in 2013, Diana has served as the lead for the organization of the vendor village. This endeavour also requires hundreds of hours of her time to seek out appropriate vendors, collect fees, and be on hand at Charles Daley Park to oversee every aspect of the village for the duration of this annual 3-day summer event. The value of Diana’s volunteer efforts with the vendor village, as an integral element of this major club fundraising project, is immeasurable.
Over the life of the Rotary Club of Lincoln, Diana has always served in the best interests of all Rotarians. And, it is notable that she and Bob are truly engaged in nurturing the Rotary ideal, “Service Above Self”, within their family. At many Lincoln Rotary events, their children and grandchildren are often among the cadre of community volunteers and willingly ‘pitch in’ to help wherever needed.
Tony Van Es
Tony established the Beamsville Relay Station as a full service truck stop in 1980. Since then, he and his family have grown their business to include several complementary companies along with Outfront Portable Solutions – a North American industry leader in the manufacturing and distribution of display hardware, structures, and systems geared for garden centres. With his wife, Pat Van Es, as co-owner, their suite of businesses now includes fashion and home décor, which were added when they renovated the Relay Travel Centre to include retail stores, Muse & Nestje, in 2013.
While building his business, Tony has always served to help build his community. Tony’s support for community organizations and projects is both generous and unwavering. He has enabled countless groups to do the things that make a difference for so many in our local community and well beyond. Through financial contributions, the provision of goods and services, and random acts of kindness, Tony ‘gives back’ without hesitation.
Formerly an active Lincoln Rotarian, Tony is now an Honorary Member of the Rotary Club of Lincoln. It is safe to say that virtually every fundraising and service initiative undertaken by our club over almost 20 years has been aided by Tony’s involvement. Whether it be a substantial sponsorship for the golf tournament or the fencing system and other equipment required for Wing-Ding, Tony, Pat, and their staff team are ever present with their support.
In all that he is about, Tony exemplifies “Service Above Self”. Our community and Rotary club are blessed to have such a congenial and big-hearted person in our midst.
