Phil Goodwin is a story teller. He began his story with a woman ( his mother) picking up a hitch hiking soldier on the QEW in 1941. Three weeks later the two met again at a barn raising dance . He went overseas and served as a pilot. They were married on Nov. 27, 1948 on Grey Cup Day. The Stampeders raided their wedding.
The newly weds moved to America. Upon returning to Canada they had three children, the youngest of whom was Phil who was born on Friday the 13th of July.
Phil remembers attending Thornhill Public School and modelling with asbestos. He remembers sailing, and tobogganing and told us a story of a family toboggan ride which ended in the creek. he produced the school year book and loved Monte Python. As a teen he was a caddy at the Thornhill golf club. He also drove a mail truck and worked at a wine shop.
Phil attended the University of Western Ontario where he studied film. On graduation he became a media buyer. He met Charlene in September 1979 and took her home from their first date in a Mercedes Benz cab. He worked for K Tell as media manager.
Charlene and Phil bought a home in Willowdale and had two children His daughter Hailey studied at Western and then went to Korea to teach English as a second language. Currently she is doing that in Toronto. His son Spencer was voted the most talkative student.
Phil has been active in a stewardship group of the Don Regeneration Council. He was also instrumental in fund raising for " paddle the Don". in a dozen years they raised 1/2 million dollars. He has also been involved in " Paddle the Rouge"
You might want to ask Phi to fill you in on his work with the National Advertising Benevolent Society, which he describes as great job.
Phil and Charlene now live in St. Catherines .
