Elimination of Preventable Deaths of Mothers and Newborn in the Western Highlands of Guatemala

42 TBAs (Trained Birth Attendants) in some of the communities of Paquip, Chimaltenango finished the training from October 2020 to August 2021. 42 more TBAs (midwives) were trained in the department of Sacatepequez from October 2021 – July 2022.
Due to the pandemic, the Health Direction of Chimaltenango didn’t authorize the start of the program during the first half of 2020. • The supervisor of the program started the revision of contents and materials in June 2020. • The facilitator was hired and trained in September 2020. • The program started in October 2020, with small groups in 8 different communities, to comply with the prevention measures for covid.
Most of the midwives are illiterate so the program was facilitated with hands on practical experience, video images and human models. The facilitators were bilingual in Spanish and Kakchiquel (the local language) which enabled the midwives to learn better and participate actively in class.
Home visits were done with the midwives to ensure they were applying what they learned. Each midwife received discharge materials, so they had everything needed to attend births in their communities and upon graduation were supplied with a birthing kit.
