The key is to generate a content-based marketing strategy for each of the four audiences, so that eventually they move towards being an advocate!

We are getting pumped for Hoop-a-thon! Did you know that last year, the Hoop-a-thon program awarded $15,000 in scholarships to students for post-secondary education? Each recipient was a top student with a commitment to community service, volunteering and had a verified need for financial support. We're sending in another team this year and we're practicing early! It was decided that each person must score a basket before they could be allowed to the potluck dinner afterwards at our Yaletown Rotaract Club's 10th Anniversary Celebration.

A BIG win (and big surprise) at the Foundation Dinner when PDG Don Evans called three District 5040 Clubs onstage to receive 2017-2018 awards for:
  • Status as an Every Rotarian, Every Year Club - every Yaletowner contributed a minimum of USD $25 to the Annual Fund
  • Being an 100% Foundation Giving Club - an average of USD $100 per capita to any TRF Fund; Annual, PolioPlus, Global Grants, or the Endowment Fund
Yaletown Rotaracter Kaief Spencer was also at the dinner - working as the DJ and tech guy!

Evan Sidwell from A Better Life Foundation told us about Save On Meats, which started as a butcher shop in 1957 where Al DesLauriers fed the homeless and employed 300 people in the DTES. After his retirement, chef Mark Brand took over, continuing the support to the community. The butcher shop has since closed but is now refurbished into a diner, offering a venue for casual dining plus special events such as the fundraiser Greasy Spoon and Plenty of Plates. Another food program includes delivering 800-1200 meals to social housing on a reliably, offering the dignity of a nutritious meal at home.

He then moved back to Surrey and since then he has put his enormous energy and compassion into empowering disadvantaged youth to achieve all the skills they need for a valuable life; especially to discover their own personal identity. Help Change My City makes presentations in schools and also works in DTES. Our Club is planning to volunteer for them by making sandwiches to help feed the homeless!

Edward De Aquilera, Chief Development Officer of Project Amigo (projectamigo.org) enthusiastically told us about this Mexican project. Founded by Rotarians 30 years ago who saw the need to educate children of migrant farmers,  the three Boards in the USA (fundraising), Canada (fundraising), and Mexico (schools/education) consist of 90% Rotarians. Project Amigo provides uniforms and school supplies, and convinces parents of the long term advantage of leaving children in school rather than working laboriously at the fields. Sponsors (“godparents”) are very important to the children's growth and everyone is welcome to visit during their scheduled Humanitarian Service Weeks.

Wheelchairs are put in the front area beside the driver which is a treat! SJA needs funds for this program to provide more transfers and purchase more vehicles. Thank you Sarah Dunham from the Roots of Empathy program (www.rootsofempathy.org) for your presentation! Since coming to Vancouver in 2000, the program instills pro social skills and kindness in school children, generally to Grades 3 & 4. A trained instructor will conduct the program once a week during the school year, visiting every third week with an infant, aka "The Teacher" and a parent. Research studies indicate children who do Roots of Empathy reduce aggressive behavior, bullying and physical abuse, and build healthy relationships through kindness and caring.

We're delighted to have Thomas Miller who recently attended a RYLA Conference in Washington DC where he networked with 100 other delegates from around the world. Lots of them are university students who benefited from the leadership training RYLA provides. The group also visited embassies and participated in a cultural talent show. The delegates developed the Rotary Next Global Campaign, brainstorming what could come after polio is eradicated. This was the first RYLA Thomas attended and he was intrigued and impressed with the program. As part of this trip Thomas also attended the Rotary Conference in Toronto.

She's an artist of modern art, inspired by Patch Adams who encouraged her to mesh traditional education with dreams of working in the art world. The message of Ask, Believe, Receive in the book “The Secret” was also inspiring to her. In 2014, the organization <Face in Space> sent one of her reprints to space at 120,000ft above ground. Vivian's "Happy Art" tells a strong message about chasing your dreams and being optimistic and opportunistic in life.

As you may know, RC Hurlingham is our partner club for our international project: The Water Harvesting Project. Neil was warmly welcomed by local Rotarians and Rotaractors as he was taken on a tour to the rift valley area of Suswa, where he met the principals and students of the schools that the project would take place. Neil brought back the banner from RC Hurlingham, valuable videos and photos of the Suswa schools and community, and even gifts to share with our fellow members!

Today Neil gave us a presentation of his trip. Please support Neil and our club on our biggest international project yet!

Interested in learning more about Rotary?

The Rotary Club of Vancouver Yaletown is a group of like-minded people working together to leverage our resources to strengthen our community. As Rotarians we are committed to the value of Service Above Self and offer our time and talents to improve the quality of life in our community. Each of us is important. Yet it is when we work together that we are able to achieve goals that may seem impossible otherwise. This is why the Rotary Club of Vancouver Yaletown exists.

Our work for non/profit organizations, youth organizations, schools, the elderly, and many other deserving groups and causes has a broad and powerful impact on the quality of life in our community. What we do with Rotary changes lives for the better and fosters good will.

Our Keynote speaker, Hugh Alley, is a most interesting speaker and we invite the public to come on Thursday the 31st of March to our regular Rotary meeting at 6:00 pm.

"Is it really worth training supervisors?"

In this talk Hugh will present the four principal reasons that most training fails. And then he will describe a simple five-step process that can be used to evaluate whether a training program will actually do what is required

For the past few years, the Rotary Club of Vancouver Yaletown has supported Shelterbox Canada (as one of our international projects).

We have part sponsored a number of ShelterBoxes over the years and to date these have been shipped to the following locations: the Philippines (to assist those affected by tropical storm), Kenya (to assist those affected by drought and famine) and Nigeria (to assist those affected by flooding).

ShelterBox responds instantly to disasters around the world by providing emergency shelter and lifesaving supplies that families need to survive in the immediate aftermath of a disaster.
A typical ShelterBox contains a family tent, blankets, water purification, cooking utensils, a stove, a tool kit, a children’s activity pack and other vital items. Highly trained ShelterBox Response Team volunteers deliver aid, working with other international organizations and local partners.

For over three years the Rotary Club of Vancouver Yaletown has sponsored many projects at the Admiral Seymour Elementary School. Earlier this year our Club formally adopted the Admiral Seymour Elementary School as one of our "Adopt a School Projects". Throughout the year our Club has committed to supporting the school by making donations to purchase books for the school's book club, sponsoring the Annual Rotary Pumpkin Patch Project at the school and sponsoring other projects as the need arises.

Today the local media in Vancouver picked up on some of the basic needs required by this school.

See the link below for a news article and video clip, featuring our own Linda Murray (Secretary of the Rotary Club of Vancouver Yaletown) presenting a cheque to the school on behalf of the Rotary Club of Vancouver Yaletown:
