Thanks to Vasant Lakhani

Fellow Rotarian Vasant (RC of Burnaby Deer Lake) is a tireless volunteer.  He was instrumental in setting up the Indo-African Charitable Society with a mandate to develop and promote public health in developing nations.  Vasant works with doctors to run medical camps in Uganda (where he was born).

 

The camp provides medical, dental and pharmacy services to local residents and provides practice mentoring for participant medical professionals.  They typically treat 14,000 patients in 2 weeks (primarily malnutrition and malaria), provide free medications, and meals to all.  They work Monday to Friday at the camp and then on the Saturday, they tour the local rural orphanages to donate food and supplies.  No one is turned away.

 

Vasant's other projects include plates for school lunch programs, boots/gloves for salt workers, a water tanker truck to deliver water to villages.  He is always looking for partners for the next medical camp and he plans to expand his volunteer services to include the homeless in Vancouver's downtown east side.
