“Teach a Mother, Change the World”

The Amarok Society teaches uneducated mothers how to read and write, and also teaches life skills such as health, nutrition, child care and conflict resolution. Mothers are then trained teach their children and their neighbours’ children in their own homes. The project was spearheaded by Gem Munro and his wife, who moved to Bangladesh from Canada to live and raise their family. The program has been expanded to Nigeria and Pakistan. The Amarok Society and Gem Munro are dedicated to teaching the most vulnerable people who have the least resources. Our Club has helped them start a newspaper program in Bangladesh, which provides funding for daily newspapers and literacy programs to women living in the poorest villages. The women read the newspapers out loud to other women and children who cannot read or afford books.
