St patrick's day Week 2023

Our Club had another busy week.

We met for breakfast on March 16 at the Windham Hotel. We had a great turnout for our meeting.

Terena and Tony were both celebrating birthdays. We treated them to a rousing, off key, rendition of the “Happy Birthday” song.

Judy had located and she distributed our old name badges. We will  be getting new badges. We were encouraged to add a “tag” on badges (ie. Nickname, motto, etc.). Please let Terena know what you want to appear on you badge.

Jamie is planning a Fireside session for our new members. A Fireside chat is a session that is run for new Rotarians to introduce them to Rotary.

Judy and Deb were recruiting members to join them next Thursday ant Soup Sisters. It sounds like a great opportunity for service and fellowship.

Mozambique news from Lorne Parker

Nathan IpMembers of our Cub, who have visited our school in Macambucuine, will remember Joa. He is our lead painter, has interpreted for us, and is our general handyman around the school. Joa has a large family, with children attending high school and university. While he works whenever and wherever he can, it isn't easy finding steady employment in Mozambique. In that regard, he is asking if there is any way we can help his family, by buying a computer for his university-aged daughter and helping offset some of the high school costs (bus fare, school fees, books, etc.). If you are interested in supporting this family, you can do so in several ways: send an Interac transfer to Lorne at lorneparker@shaw.ca; provide a donation through Steven's Hope (can provide a tax receipt through Shannon); or give Lorne/Judy a donation at the next Rotary gathering. No amount is too small or too big. Lorne is going to purchase a computer from Makro in South Africa for the university-aged daughter and will send the high school support directly. As is true for all our donations to Mozambique, we require receipts for all expenditures made with the funds provided. Please contact Lorne directly if more information is required. Thanks for your consideration of this request.

Our speaker this week was Nathan Ip

Speaker

Nathan is with Edmonton Unlimited (formerly Innovation Edmonton). He talked about the work that his organisation does and to support early stage innovative entrepreneurs. He talked about how his organisation supports new businesses and the changes in the tech industry and in the job market. Innovation From Here For The World – Edmonton Unlimited

Nathan is also a candidate for the provincial NDP in the Edmonton SW riding. He talked, briefly, about some of the items that will be included in their platform once the election is called.

Evening at the Theater

We were invited by Shadow Theater to attend their opening night for the latest production “ All the Little Animals I have Eaten”. It was a great evening and a thought-provoking play.

march 1 2023

Twelve members and guests met for breakfast at the Wyndham Hotel on March 1, 2023.

It was great to have one of our alumnus members, Temi, t for a visit. Maybe she will rejoin our Club.

The Wyndham has resurrected the breakfast buffet in the Terrace and we were able to enjoy the buffet. It was great!

Our Youth Director, Jamie Pallet, invited members to join him for a U of A Rotaract fundraiser for The Boyle Street Community Services on Saturday March 4.

Jamie participated in the Coldest Night of the Year walk over the last weekend. He reported that our club raised over $1,000 for that event. He said that it was a fun event and encouraged more of us to be involved next year. Finally we held a draw for a beautiful ”Coldest Night of the Year”. Thanks for doing this Jamie.

Our Club will be making Soup with the “Soup Sisters” on March March 23. It is a great organisation and it sounds like a fun event. Contact Judy or deb if you can join us.
Our speaker this week was Anika Zepp from the Realtors community Foundation. The realtor’s Community Foundation was founded by Edmonton and area realtors to join forces and help the community. Today there are approximately 4,500 realtor members and it paid $450,000 in grants last year. Grants are made to local registered charities. Anika promised to keep us informed about their upcoming walk and golf tournament fundraisers and to feature any of our fundraiser events the foundations newsletter. REALTORS® Community Foundation (realtorscommunityfoundation.com)

We have arranged for Nathan ip, Ndp candidate for Edmonton Southwest to speak to our club on March  15. Please mark your calendar and invite a guest.

@023 AGM

January 18 -

we had the impossible happen and the chef didn't show up for work and we had no FOOD!  Luckily there was coffee and orange juice so we were able to soldier on with our Assembly.
1) Each director gave an update on their activity and the most interesting was the Treasurer stating we had money in the Casino account that needed to be used up in the coming months/this year - and for us to consider how best to get money into the community and have a benefit for the Club through increased awareness and Membership attraction.  We encouraged members to consider some charities they care about and to approach them to have them come and speak to the club or organize an event with them.  AND to follow through with a consideration of joining.  We have had a few suggestions come in already and the members are following up on them.
2) We discussed having a tutorial session with our projector/computers to show how to access Club Runner for all the new members. As well - how to access MyRotary on the Rotary.org site.  Judy committed to getting that into the meeting.
3) At the same time as doing a Club Runner tutorial we agreed to do a vulnerable record check tutorial for those needing the certification.
4) Strat planning to go to the 3rd session on February 9 at Shannon's.  All members asked to attend if possible - it will follow on the heels of a brief Board meeting at 5 with the Strat planning to start at 5:30.  Pizza will be brought in.
5) Steve went over the need for a document to go to our insurers each time we have a Rotary event where alcohol is consumed.
6) Youth - Jamie - scholarships in the works for Louis St. Laurent and Harry Ainley.  As well he is working with a disadvantaged young person with a bit of support from the club.  Jamie really needs a committee member to help him on some of the projects so am asking for someone to step up!
7) Encouraging members to think about locations for Support Local in their own neighbourhoods.
8) District  Conference - April 20-23 in Jasper.  Club will pay registration fees and one night accommodation for any members wishing to attend.

January Social at Bombay Street

We had an excellent turnout of 15 guests to our Support Local evening!  Waaaaay down in the far reaches of Mill Woods there is a plethora of great Indian restaurants and we were treated to a delightful spread - a bit unorthodox in its delivery I know -- of great food from the Gujorot region of India.  Our host and co-owner - Tushar Mistry - was delighted to have us there.  We got to hear how he was an engineer but had always loved food and cooking. He is planning to open one of these restaurants in Calgary, Vancouver, Toronto.  We are hoping to have him out to a meeting in the coming weeks.

Wow, our first in person Rotary meeting since March 2020!!

It was great to see a lot of “old” faces we had not seen for a couple years or more (Like Ed Korbyl, John Drebit and Trina Morelli). I counted over 15 people at the table.

There were lots of differences from our last meeting;
  1. Different president
  2. It was in the evening not morning
  3. It was at the University Club not the Delta
  4. There was alcohol
  5. 5. The food was great

Reports were that the “Guess Who is Coming to Dinner” event was well attended and a good time was had by all. Thank you Tereena for organising.

Lorne formally announced that our charity, Stephens Hope Society now has charitable society and has received it’s first 2 charitable donations. Plans are underway for a fundraiser wine dinner. Please start campaigning for silent auction donations and stay tuned for more information.

Our speaker was Edmonton Public School Board Chair Trisha Estabrooks.  Trisha gave a very interesting and important presentation. She talked about;
  1. Why she left journalism to become involved in politics;
  2. How their teachers, parents, students and others stepped forward to enable theschools to cope during Covid
  3. The importance of an independent elected school board;
  4. The new school curriculum
  5. The future of education in Edmonton

Trisha is an articulate and passionate advocate for our schools and their students.

Thank You Trisha.

February 16 2022

Rotary Feb16 22

We had a disappointing turnout (only 5 members) for a great speaker on Wednesday February 16.

President Elizabeth was unable to attend (she was in Ontario having breakfast) so  president elect Judy Wilson  chaired the meeting  and she did a great job.

Our speaker this week was Shirley Lowe. Shirley is a historian and she gave us a very informative presentation on the history of Edmonton  from the grant of a charter for Rupert’s Land (all land that had rivers or streams that drain into  Hudsons Bay) by King Charles II to his cousin Prince Rupert, through the building of forts, subdivision of land by the Hudsons Bay Company, land booms, arrival of the railroad and merger of Edmonton and Strathcona.

Fascinating stuff.

May 5 notes

We had a good zoom May 5, 2021.
Unfortunately I don’t have my notes so I do not recall what we talked about.
I can report that we held a general meeting of the membership of Stephen’s Hope Society to limit it’s corporate objects in order to meet the CRA requirements for Charitable registration.
Following our meeting Mark drove to our members’ residences to pick up bottles for Club fundraising. He reported that he collected $250. I am not sure what that says about our members.
I listened to a presentation a week ago from Jesse Lipscombe. Jesse is involved in what I think is an interesting and important project. He is developing a board game that will educate players about our unconscious racism. He will be speaking to our club on June 12. That is the last day of his fundraising campaign. I have attached a link to a recent interview that he gave to describe his project. https://vimeo.com/531114493

City Clean Up

At least 13 of our members gathered downtown on Saturday morning.

We were fitted with gloves, grabbers and garbage bags and we set our to pick up trash in the Chinatown area.

It was a real eye opener for me. There was lots of trash but it was not the trash that had an affect on me, it was the stuff we found in the trash like novaxin kits and needles and the number of homeless people living in tents. I came away from the event feeling good. Not only did we clean up an area of town that is clearly neglected by the City and ETS (the worst spot we cleaned up was a bus shelter) but we showed people there that someone cars.

We had a great time and the consensus from the people I talked to was that we should do this again.

There is a rumour that a few of us may, or may not, have gathered for “tea” on a patio after the event.

Pat reported that Agnes has been doing well. That is indeed great news.

We talked about Cindy’s decision to take a leave of absence. She will be missed.

We had a general discussion about the changes to our Transit system. There were lots of advice and comments from a group of seniors who have not been on a bus in 20 years.

Deb reported that our application for charitable status for Stephen’s Hope has been returned. CRA is seeking further detail and clarification. Lorne, deb and Brian are working on a response.
Interim President/President-elect Elizabeth pointed out that our pre pandemic fundraising sources (Robust reds and Casinos)  are not possible now. We will need to find new ways to raise funds. She asks that members provide any thoughts.

Mark and will coordinate a bottle pick up.

April 7 Zoom Meeting

There were 7 dedicated members who attended our Zoom meeting on April 7 2021.
We did not have a speaker again this week.
We had a discussion around the new lockdown rules and the vaccine roll out.
Jamie brought the new scholarship plan and criteria to the club.
Pat announced that 200 more lunches were delivered to the Lauderdale school. That is great work Pat.
An invitation to the ECF Donor appreciation day was sent yesterday (if you didn't get it, check your junk folder).  Sunday May 16, at either 2 p.m. or 7 p.m. you are invited to an in-person drive-in to view the comedic group The Debaters.  Snacks provided and there will be roving entertainment prior to the show.  All participants must stay in their car.  Sound will be via FM transmitter.  If you do not wish to attend in person you can watch online at 7 p.m.
Everyone was asked what is one thing they are looking forward to when COVID is over.  Pat is looking forward to a river Cruise in Asia, Doug would like to visit with his son, Brian H. would like a nice meal in a restaurant. School Lunches

When the pandemic hit our Club faced a number of challenges. One of which was that our normal fundraising activities (Casinos and Wine Tasting fundraiser) had to be cancelled. We did not have the source of funds that we  were used to to fund our charitable activities.
We could not participate in many of the community charitable activities like the Mustard Seed meal prep etc,
Gary Smith is in the front lines of our educational system and he identified an urgent need in some of our schools in less affluent neighbourhoods. Many of the charities that had been providi9ng meals for their students were unable to do so because of the pandemic  but kids were still coming to school hungry. Gary thought that our club could help. We could  purchase prepackaged food and put together lunch bags for the kids that could be distributed in a covid safe manner.
GATEWAY Rotary has taken on Gary’s challenge. We raised funds from private donations and from a bottle drive. To date we have purchased, packaged and delivered 1800 food packages to the following schools;
  1. Ivor Dent school -800 lunches
  2. Laudedale School – 400 lunches  and;
  3. Prince Charles school – 600 lunches
This is a great story of the generosity and  impact of our little Club. We need, however to extend our thanks for the efforts of our members who have made this project a success;
  1. Gary Smith who brought this idea to the Club;
  2. Gary Smith and Elizabeth Bonkink who purchased supplies and delivered 600 lunches to the Prince Charles School
  3. Pat and Joan Coyle who purchased, packaged and delivered 400 meals to the Lauderdale School;
The Club members who attended our only in person meeting during the pandemic at the McKay school who helped package 400 lunches for the Prince Charles school

March 24 2021

Although many of our members have had their first vaccine shot we are still holding our weekly meetings virtually. This week, on March 24, I counted 9 members on my screen.
We did not have a speaker again this week..
I joined the meeting early. That is a new experience for me. It was fun to watch people join one by one and look for their “mute” button.
Judy reported that Agnes is doing well and keeping her spirits up. Agnes will join us this week for virtual pub night.
Peter talked about how his bank is coping with the pandemic. Apparently there is still a large number of bank customers who want to come into the bank to deal directly with his tellers. I may have this wrong and I stand to be corrected but I think Peter told us that 25% of his staff have been diagnosed with Covid 19.
Another sign of Spring, outdoor exhibits at the Zoo is open! We talked about a Club visit to the Zoo.
Pub Night this Wednesday. Starts at 5:00pm. Elisabeth will be games-master. Watch for a new zoom invitation.

We did not have a speaker this week. We just talked among ourselves and, once again. we managed to make the meeting pretty informative and entertaining.
Several attendees were sporting Irish gear in tribute to St Patrick’s Day but our birthday girl, Trina, had the best Irish outfit.
We had a discussion about the differences and advantages between Google Meets (that the City and the school board uses) and the Zoom platform that we are using. Doug McEwan has had his first Covid shot.
Mathew Baranowski joined us again. Matt is an engineer with PCL Construction and he is interested in joining our group. Welcome aboard Matt. We look forward to meeting you in person.
Elizabeth advised that the Edmonton Community Foundation will be hosting a donor appreciation night again this year. The debaters will perform for a “drive-in’ performance at the Expo Center pm May 16th. Mark your calendars and watch for your invitation.
Judy reported that Cindy recently gave a great presentation to the City Council and she received rave reviews. She talked about the history of the McKay Avenue School and the 140 foacts for 140 years that Cindy and her staff have posted at  archivesmuseum.epsb.ca
Pat Coyle’s Rotary moment was about  his introduction of Trina to our Club. Pat has done an awful lot for our Club over the years but that has to be one of his biggest contributions.
Apparently several members read my bulletin to play a game of “spot the mistake”. Every writer needs a proofreader and I, apparently, have several.

March 10 meeeting

Another great virtual meeting this week. I counted 10 members on my screen.
We did not have a speaker this week. We just talked among ourselves  but we managed to make the meeting pretty informative and entertaining.
Jamie reported that he and Ken have been working on a revised scholarship criteria. He will share with the Club when it is ready.
Doug McEwan has had his first Covid shot. He reported that the shot was no big deal but the place was terribly organised. He had to wait in line for 40 minutes!
I asked our education professionals (Lorne, Jamie and  Gary) their thoughts on the news we hear about NWT are going to stop using the Alberta education curriculum. Lorne shared some inside scoop. Very interesting stuff.
One of the first signs of spring is sighting motorcycles on the road. Some motorcycles were sighted last week. J.
Cindy reported that Agnes had a good week this week. Our thoughts and prayers are with you Agnes.
Peter Elder shared his Rotary moment with us. He recalled that, after one of  our members, Mike Pawlis,  passed away our club rallied to help his widow, Anna, move into her new home.

march 3 meeting

Another great virtual meeting this week. I counted 13 members plus our guest on my screen.
Unfortunately our speaker was unable to attend the meeting. Hopefully we will be able to reschedule him for another meeting.
This was the first day that Albertans were allowed to return to their gym to exercise without an individual trainer. David Keam was back at the gym and he joined us from there.
Judy and Cindy gave us an update on Agnes medical journey. They scared us with stories of how the medical staff made assumptions unfounded assumptions about Agnes just because of her age. Turns our systemic ageism is a real thing.
Pat reported that 200 lunches were delivered to Lauderdale School. Our Club has purchased, packaged and delivered 1400 lunches to schools this year. This is a great project and we need to extend our thanks to the Club member who are doing the heavy lifting to make this happen.
We had an extended discussion about our scholarship awards. WE did not award a scholarship last year but we will rework the criteria, find the money that was paid to EPSB in anticipation of the scholarship award last year and proceed.
For the first time this year we were joined by a guest and prospective member , Matt Baranowski from PCL. Matt recently moved to Edmonton from Winnipeg and is looking to join a Rotary Club. He would reduce our average age significantly.

Feb 17 Notes

Another great virtual meeting this week. I counted 12 members on my screen.
This was a general meeting so we did not have speaker. Although we did not have a speaker you can always count on our group to have an interesting and spirited conversation. Always well worth your time.
I whined a bit about the hassle involved in moving my office and downsizing. That conversation turned into a discussion of disposition of artwork and, eventually the poor quality of Rotary historical records. You never know where a conversation will lead.
Elizabeth and Debra showed off their puppies. Elizabeth’s dg is only 3 months old and already 35 pounds.
We had a long discussion on the merits of our internet and cell phone providers. The number of people who complained about Shaw were roughly the same as the number complaining about Telus
Judy told us that the City is discontinuing land line phones for some employees. That prompted a discussion of cell phone reception and scam phone calls
Pat reported that;
  1. The Club Pat reported our Club delivered 400 more lunches to the Ivor Dent school
  2. Jamie is exploring an opportunity to provide lunches to another deserving schoo
  3. Our Casino has been postponed again. It is now scheduled for the 3rd ¼  of this year
Deb’s mom recently fell and broke her hip. Our thoughts out to her and we wish her a speedy recovery.
Congratulations to Steve Lambert. His daughter Breanne just made him a Grandpa again. His new granddaughter is Brynlee Nora Donnan and she was 6 lb 5 oz. Steve is now quarantining so he can meet her in person.
We ended our meeting with our weekly Covid rant.
For all you dog owners out there (and friends) we have scheduled a walk at Beuna Vista dog park (Lauier Park) for Sunday at 10 am. Please email me to let me if you can make it.

Feb 10n Notes

We had a great virtual meeting this week.

Although we had a fun and informative conversation our attendance was pretty small. I counted only 8 people in attendance.
Judy told us about a Nobel Prize winner who recently spoke to the City. He is a  U of A professor and a virologist (i think). She was impressed with him but pretty distressed by his observation that many of the issues we are dealing with with Covid were disclosed with our Sars experience. We should have been ready.

Elisabeth and Gary showed off their puppy. He is going to be huge!

We had an extended discussion about the Covid vaccine rollout. Elisabeth advised that there are predictions, based upon the vaccine availability projections that we will not have everyone vaccinated for at least another year.

Gary and Lorne gave us an interesting discussion on education theory and the opportunities and challenges of on line learning. Lorne described the syetem we were educated in as a “cells and bells” system.

Judy reported that Agnes’ health battles are ongoing but she is in good spirits. Our thoughts and prayers are with her.

Pat reminded us that despite Covid and our fundraising challenges we have made some donations recently.
              -$2,000 to Yona. The Winspear Center is closed so their check is in the mail;
              - $1,000 to Mozambique for maintenance fund
Elisabeth reported that there are volunteer opportunities at the Mustard Seed. If you are interested please let her know.
Great meeting, see you next week.

Just a reminder;
Next week is our Pub night so grab a glass of wine and join us at 5:00 pm
We have a speaker on March 3. Mark Cherrington will be joining us to speak to our Club. Mark Cherrington is an interesting gentleman who is very engaged in helping the vulnerable in yeg.

Randy Gregg - Riverhawks

We had a  great virtual meeting this week. Dr. Randy Gregg joined us.
Randy gave us a very entertaining, informative and inspiring presentation on plans for Telus Field.
Dr. Gregg is part of a group of 24 Edmontonians who have taken a long term lease of Telus Field. There plan is to revitalise and the field and the neighbourhood. Their plans include;
  1. Bringing elite level baseball to the Park.
    1. They have obtained a Pacific League baseball franchise and they will field a team (the Edmonton Riverhawks);
    2. They have hired a quality coach and they are in the process of recruiting. They expect to have no problem recruiting a competitive team
    3. They will partner with local businesses in order to provide quality local food and fun promotion events to attract people who are only casual baseball fans
    4. Ticket prices to be reasonable
  2. They will make the ball field available for minor  and recreational league baseball, fastball and slowpitch to use
  3. They hope to host concerts and other events on the site as well.
It sounds like an exciting development for our City and we look forward to seeing some baseball and eating some gourmet hot dogs in the corporate boxes.
Thanks Randy

Feb 3 Notes

I counted 16 people at our virtual meeting this week. Carolyn was back and she introduced us to her grandson.
Sarah and TJ joined us from the U of A Rotaract Club. It was great to have them.
Brian Hamilton shared a photo and a rotary memory. Brian recalled a time when he hosted 4 young ladies from the rotary Cross Country tour. As he recalled Dave Dorcus had asked if he could host one coros country tour Rotary exchange student and he ended up hosting four. His only regret was that he did not keep in tough after they left.
Tony announced that he has more than quadrupled his original fundraising target of $250 for his coldest night of the year walk. Congrats Tony. You do us proud.
Sarah reported on the U of A rotaract Club activities. They meet virtually every Wednesday evening, they have 40 active members and 4 active committees. Sarah sits on 3 of them!

January 20 breakfast meeting

We had another great virtual meeting on the morning of President Biden’s inauguration.
Judy updated is on Agnes’ battle with cancer. Judy reports that Agnes is feeling more positive and her spirits are up. Our thoughts and prayers are with Agnes at the difficult time.
Several members, including Deb and Brian Hamilton offered to help Judy with chauffeuring Agnes to her medical appointments. Judy will coordinate. Thank you to everyone who volunteered to help out.
Pat Coyle gave us a brief financial report. In particular, he reported that we have sent $1,000 to Mozambique to be used for school maintenance.
Our Club has lost 3 members since the Pandemic we currently have 24 members. We understand that it is difficult to maintain enthusiasm for the group when we can not get together in person or participate in social or charitable activities together. Hopefully we will be able to convince those members to return when things get easier.
Tony is participating in the Coldest Night of the Year fundraiser again this year. Tony is one of our members that truly demonstrates the Rotary motto “service above self”. If you have not already done so, I encourage you to sponsor him.
 Just a reminder, we will not have a meeting next Wednesday morning. Rather, we will have a virtual Pub night on Wednesday evening. Watch for the invitation.

Yellowknife visit

Several of our members joined the Yellowknife Rotary Club, via Zoom, on Thursday January 21.
They were very hospitable to us and we enjoyed Lorne’s presentation to that Club. The Yellowknife club has been one of the strongest supporters of our Mozambique school projects and gave a good summary of the history of the projects, our current activity and our plans for the future.

January 13

We had a great virtual meeting. I counted 12 people on my computer screen.
Elisabeth and Gary introduced their new puppy, Orion.
Judy brought some great news. Agnes received the results from a recent blood test and they showed that she is responding to treatment amazingly well. That is very good news.
We will try to host a speaker on the first day of each month. We will invite Dr. Randy Gregg to speak to us. He will talk about his plans to bring a new baseball team to the City. Please contact our speaker coordinator,  Brian Liddell, with suggestions for a speaker.
Cindy Davis received and presented her Paul Harris award to herself. Congratulations Cindy.
Judy reported that she recently participated in a X-country symposium on protocol. They discussed about the movement in protocol from ceremony to “story telling”
Lorne Parker presented his Rotary memories. He talked about our good friend David Winfield. He talked about a time Dave fell asleep while helping Lorne pick up a rental van in South Africa. He also talked about the subterfuge David engaged in in order to attend Lorne’s Robbie Burns dinner every year.
Cindy will not be hosting our next meeting. She will be under the knife have surgery. Good luck Cindy. We will be thinking of you.
Lorne Parker gave a brief report on how Mozambique is coping with Covid 19. He reported that they have been badly hit and they do not have the medical facilities to diagnose or treat the victims but they are following the safety protocols.
Next week,  January 20 Pat will host our meeting. The following Wednesday will by a virtual Pub Night.
Tony s will be running in the “Coldest night of the year” fundraiser. Watch for his email.
Lorne will be speaking to the Yellowknife Rotary Club  at noon on Thursday the 21st. Hopefully  we will be able to join that meeting and enjoy Lorne’s eloquence.

Jamie reported that he had attended a virtual  high school reunion this month. Turns out one of his high school class mates is with the Canadian Embassy in Maputo. He knew Lorne and was aware of our Club and our school construction projects. Small world eh!

It was great to see Doug McEwan back at our virtual meetings. We had some technical difficulties and the Clubrunner level but Elisabeth got them worked out.

Steve Hogle jan 5 speaker

Our first speaker of 2021 was Steven Hogle, chairman of Hockey Edmonton.
Steve gave an entertaining presentation. He talked about his hockey history, his career, and the role of Edmonton Hockey.
Steve played his minor hockey in Edmonton and finished his hockey career when playing inter colegiate hockey in Chicago. He went on to become a news person. He advanced to be head of news at CFRN. He has been an executive with The Alberta Research Council, The Edmonton Oilers and president of the  Saskatoon Blade Junior Hockey teams. He is now chairman of Hockey Edmonton. (http://www.hockeyedmonton.ca/)

New Year Message 2021

We made it to 2021!!

Thank you to Presidents Shannon and Cindy for shepherding our Clun through the pandemic.  You did a great job pivoting our Club to  online meetings and maintaining membership involvement.

This year was a tough one but the Club's fellowship and connection has helped us cope.

I know that 2021 will be a year of transition and improvement. I can not wait to see the changes.

Happy New Year everyone.

Mozambique update 2021

I am attaching an email that Lorne received from our contact in Mozambique. As you can see they are dealing with Covid there too but they have been able to proceed with the construction. It is a piece of good news for the new year.

Thank you for sharing the news Lorne.

Greetings
Good to hear from you. From this side we are doing well hope you are too.
The Macambacuine School reopened in November the 2nd and closed for short break of two weeks that is from December 21st to 03 January 2021.  The headmistress Mrs. Henriqueta told me that the 2020 school year will be closed on February. On March 2021 will begin a new school year. The school maintenance balance enabled the school to set up new system of washing hands.  Also we set up the water tank behind the boys washrooms. Thus, the school was reopened after the inspection from the government authorities.
After placing water tank and testing to see if the water enters, we found that the pump doesn't work. We asked someone who works on pump repair to help us. He told us that some parts of the pump had damaged because it has not been used for a long time due to the closure of the school by Covid-19. After repairing, he charged 7500 Meticais, which with the current exchange corresponds to 110 to 115 USD. So we have a debt of 7,500.00 Meticais. We apologize for not having communicated in advance.
We appreciate for your precious support to Macambacuine school kids. May God continue blessing you.
Find the attached Mambacuine School pictures and the treasurer financial report.
Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year!

Sincerely,
Filipe Macaringue

2020 Christmas Party

Instead of a morning meeting we had a Virtual Christmas party on December 16, 2020. I counted 15 celebrants.
It was great to see Agnes Fisher at the party. Judy, Cindy and Agnes attended the party together. They are all single ladies and they are a cohort so that passes Deena Henshaw’s rules.
We collected $30/partier for the party and those funds were donated to the Mustard seed. The club topped up those funds to make the donation $1,000.00
Most of the party goers showed up in Christmas garb.
The party started with some really bad Christmas jokes. The only one I remember
“Who would have  thought 3 years ago that if people were smoking weed at a family gathering in 2020 it would be the family gathering that was illegal?”
We then had a trivia competition. The competition was created and hosted by Judy’s neice, Amanda Wilson. Amanda did a great job and everyone had a good time although some of us, including yours truly, came away feeling pretty ignorant.
The final activity was the Christmas garb contest. Brian Hamilton won first prize as the most festively dressed

The winners at the Christmas party were:
Pat - Trivia winner - $50 to KegnCork
Ken- Trivia participant.  :). $15 to McDonalds
Brian Hamilton- Most festive costume- $50 to Starbucks
Carolyn - runner up festive outfit- $20 to Keg n Cork.
Tony- door prize donated by Tereena- folding picnic table.
Judy - was the winner of dessert bombs - by donation of Brian L.

General meeting with DG

Well, we had our annual meeting with the District Governor, James Ferguson, and Assistant District Governor Terri Demers
We started with Rotary moments from Judy and Carolyn
Carolyn talked about her first impression (and continued appreciation) of our Club as an open and welcoming group;
Judy talked about one of our early projects when we engaged high school students to provide computer training to teachers, students and parents at the Mckee school when our own Jamie Pallet was a member of our club and principal of that school.
We have several members who are dealing with medical issues;
  1. Pat Coyle is recovering from heart surgery
  2. Jamie is recovering from back issues; and
  3. Agnes is fighting cancer
Our thoughts and prayers go out to all three of them.
Special thanks to Judy Wilson. Judy has been Agnes’ friend, support and chauffer throughout  her medical struggles.
We talked about the success of our school lunch program. We have purchased, packaged and delivered lunches to the Prince Charles and Ivor Dent schools. We have raised over $3,000 for this project through;
  1. Generous support from Cindy’s cousins;
  2. Cindy’s “Gratosity” fundraiser promotion; and;
  3. The assistance of mark and Tony with our bottle drive.
Thank you to everyone involved. Your efforts are really appreciated.
District Governor Ferguson extended greetings from the district. He shared a video and reported that the Rotary theme for the 2020-2021 year is
“Rotary opens Opportunities”
James is a member of the e-club. He told us that that club is chartered in our district but it has members throughout the world.
I have contacted the United Nations to arrange for a virtual tour and presentation for our Club. They will provide speakers on the following topics;
• UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)
• Peacekeeping Issues
• Security Council Issues and Sanctions Issues
• Economic Development
• Sustainable Development and Environmental Issues
• The UN and Civil Society/Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs)

The board members reported on our Club’s progress and projects this year.
Lorne gave a detailed report on the status of our Mozambique school construction projects. He discussed;
  1. Difficulty getting Foundation funds because they are “brick and mortar” projects;
  2. Our successes at Xia Xia and Pusa
  3. Our association with the Canadian embassy in Mozambique and our new project near Maputo
  4. Our progress in registering “Stephen’s Hope for Mozambique Society”  as a charity

Pub Night

Well, we had our first virtual Pub night of the pandemic. It is not  the same as the real thing.
On the bright side;
  1. The drinks are cheaper;
  2. You don’t have to drive after drinking and;
  3. You don’t have to get out of bed to participate; but
On the dark side;
  1. If you want to eat something you have to prepare it yourself
  2. You are still at home; and;
  3. It is just not the same
Steve announced that he is about to become a grandfather again. His daughter, Breanne, is due to have her first baby in February;
Judy lamented about the menagerie she has in her home. It includes birds, dogs and even hermit crabs! Kids grow up and leave home but their pets stay behind!
David Keam shared some inside information about the production and content of his  https://www.listennotes.com/podcasts/loose-and-conversational-david-keam-yhrV7aOqH45/#images  pod cast. It is a fun podcast but definitely not for the prudish audience.
I have contacted the United Nations to arrange for a virtual tour and presentation for our Club. They will provide speakers on the following topics;
• UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)

Lorne Parker provided his International Affairs report.
  • Arrangements are continuing to have the donation of Portugese books delivered to Mozambique

Pat Coyle provided his treasurer’s report. Pat’s report reflected the challenges that we have experienced with Covid.

Gary reported that we have prepared and distributed 800 meals for schools.

Rotary District has circulated a directive in whch it strongly recommended that we suspend in person meetings and officers and directors of the Club could be sued and found personally liable if an attendee contractd Covid 19  after attending a rotary meeting. While I do not share the opinion that directors could be found personally liable I concluded
  1. We should have all attendees at meeting sign a declaration and waiver;
  2. We[BL2]  should have a recorded directors resolution before evey in person meeting;

We need to follow all government orders and suggestions regarding in person meetongs
All of our meetings for the time being will be held virtually. The[BL3]  last meeting of each month will be a virtual Pub Night at 5:00 pm while all other meetings will be held at 7:30 am

Hybrid Meeting Oct 7

We held a great turnout at Historical McKay Avenue School for ur second inn person meeting since the Covid outbreak. Unfortunately only one person (Dave Dorcus) ttend via Zoom.
There was no signing, we all had masks and we signed in using a online scan app provided by EPSB.
It was a bring your own beverage and skip breakfast kind of breakfast meeting and we did not sign the anthem.
Never the less, it was a good and productive meeting and a great opportunity to catch up.
Lionel Usunier shared a Rotary memory. His memory was from hosting Cross Canada tour keds back in the day. He recalled taking two young ladies out to spend a day at the lake at the Douglas mansion in Seba Beach.
We had feed back from members who attended the Pub night last week. They reported that they had a great time, David’s team was very hospitable and the “shut the place down”.
Following the formal part of our meeting we formed an assembly line to prepare emergency school lunches for kids at Gary Smith’s school. Gary reported that the school lunch program that we previously provided through the E4C charity has been discontinued this year and his kids are often in desperate need of something to eat. With the help of some money form a donation Cindy received from her cousin Gary and Elizabeth stepped in tp help. Gary took a food safety training and they purchased foods and bags. We packaged the food into individual lunch bags for them. -

Sep 9 Zoom meeting

September, 7 2020 bulletin
We had a great, if lightly attended virtual meeting on the 7th.
This was a “Fellowship” meeting so there was no speaker.
Steve Lambert showed up and he had his camera working. It was great to see you again Steve. Steve had to buy a new computer in order to attend our meetings. Thanks for doing that Steve.
Gary Smith gave us the inside scoop on what it is like to be in a school during the return to school. He talked about the protocols that they are following, the things he has observed and some of his fears. Thanks Gary for a very interesting insight.
Shannon then shared some of his experiences as a parent of young kids returning to school.
This weekend was the virtual District convention and the Keg n Cork sponsored scotch tasting. Unfortunately, your reporter was unable to attend. Perhaps someone can circulate a report for our members.

2020 2021 Changeover

  1. – 2021 Changeover Party
Our Club gathered on Thursday evening at Deb Jack’s new home to celebrate the 2020/2021 Rotary changeover.
The party was planned and hosted by Deb Jack, Trina Morelli and Judy Wilson. They did a fantastic job of planning and preparing a “Social Distance” evening. The food and drinks were fantastic and the fellowship was great.
Our President Elect (and current Foundation chair)
Community Chair, Deb Jack, announced that our club recently made a $1,000 donation to the Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation – Teddy Bear Bereavement Program.  The Foundation does many wonderful things for the citizens of Edmonton.  One of them is their Bereavement Program.

There are two parts to this program.  The first is to provide a teddy bear to mothers who are leaving an Edmonton Hospital after losing her baby.  We’re sure you can understand the positive emotional support that this gesture provides to the mother.  Our donation was specifically earmarked for this portion of the program.  The teddy bears will also have our name on it.

The other part of the program is to provide a burial service for the babies whose parent(s) did not make these arrangements.  A number of local funeral homes and cemeteries provide the necessary materials and process including a none-denomination religious element to the program.

Elisabeth Bonkink started off the proceedings by presenting a Paul Harris pin to immediate past president Shannon Troke.
Elisabeth and Judy said that  goal for the Club this year will be to make every member a “sustaining member” with the Foundation (ie donate at least $100/year to the foundation.
Judy then presented a ceremonial vest to our new president Cindy Davis.
Cindy gave a brief outline of her plans and goals for the year;
  1. Primary goal for this year will be to support our members through the difficult pandemic times we are facing, maintain the Club. Our theme will be that we are family and our theme song is “We are Family”
  2. She plans, starting in September; to rotate our meetings each week as follows;
    1. First week will be an in person meeting @ Mckay school;
    2. 2nd and 3rd meetings will be virtual meetings via Zoom;
    3. 4th week will be a Pub night (at the Halo Pub)
It look like we are going to have an interesting year.

July 29 Zoom Breakfast meeting

Covid virtual meeting July 29 2020
We held a virtual meeting in lieu of our pre-covid  Wednesday breakfast meeting again this week.
I counted 14 members on my laptop screen. I think we would have had even more but I suspect some people were confused by conflicting notices about the meeting that were sent by Zoom.
We were treated to  very interesting and inspirational presentation by Amanda Bannister from Youth Orchestra Northern Alberta. http://www.yona-sistema.com/what-is-yona
Amanda shared a video presentation and talked about the goals and achievements of her organisations and shared some individual stories. She talked about how they have worked around the Covid pandemic restrictions.
Thanks to Amanda for an interesting and inspirational presentation.
Our club is proud to have been a sponsor of your program since the beginning.

Covid virtual meeting July 8

Covid virtual meeting July 8 2020
Once again we held a virtual meeting in lieu of our pre-covid  Wednesday breakfast meeting . I counted 13 members on my laptop.
This was our first meeting under new management. President Cindy Davis chaired our meeting and did a great job.
Plans for Cindy’s changeover party are underway.
Both Jamie Pallet and Shannon Troke have qualified for a Paul Harris award and the awards will be presented at our first, in person, meeting. There are plans underway to have a “picnic style” in person meeting this summer.
About a dozen members attended pu night at the Halo restaurant on July 2nd. They reported that it was a fun evening, it was great to meet with people in person again and Dave Keam’s staff did a great job dealing with the Covid safety protocols.
Deb Jack reported that we donated $2,000 to each of the Food Bank and the Mustard seed in memory of Irene Cetinski and David Winfield. We have budgeted for donations in the next year to Mustard Seed, Christmas hamper and other recurring causes. Deb is looking for suggestions from the membership for other community causes that we could consider contributing to.
Upcoming Events:
  1. We will have a presentation from the Yellowknife Rotary Club;
  2. We are scheduling an on line presentation from Yona for August
  3. We will be inviting a speaker from the Senior Care facility industry to talk about how her facilities have been impacted her facilities and her industry

Covid Virtual mtg June 24

Covid virtual meeting June 24 2020
Once again we held a virtual meeting in lieu of our pre-covid  Wednesday breakfast meeting this week.
We had an interesting roundtable conversation about the adjustments we are making in the way we work to deal with the pandemic. Some are working from home, some are still going in to work but implementing policies like barriers, work form home options, barriers and self distancing.
Cindy briefly discussed some of the changes that Edmonton Public  Schools is planning for the fall.
Judy is working with Dave Dorcus on planning for our change over party. Hopefully we will be able to have an in person social distanced event.
If you haven’t joined us on line yet please check us out. I don’t think we are meeting July 1 but we will be back July 8.
Pub night 5:30 pm or so on July 2nd at the only place (our hospitality expert, Dave Keam) really feels comfortable vouching for. His own HALO Bar in the Renaissance Hotel.

June 17

We have not had an in person meeting since March. President Shannon arranged for us to meet, via Zoom, at 9:00 am each Wednesday until the Covid restrictions are lifted and we can meet in person again.

If you have not attended one of our virtual meetings please consider doing so. Cindy will send you and invitation next week.

We had 12 members attend our virtual meeting this week.
Pat reported that invoices have been forwarded to members for the 2020/2021 year. Fees are reduced as we are not including any Hotel or meal charges. It is important that fees are paid before we have to report our membership to Rotary International so we don’t end up paying dues for folks who do not retain their membership.

Judy is working with Dave Dorcus on planning for our change over party. Hopefully we will be able to have an in person social distanced event.

During this pandemic we would like Club members to try to support the businesses who support our Club. Lorne is preparing a list.

March 08 2020

We had a good turnout back at theDelta Hotel this week. We met in the grand ballroom on the main flor this week. There was a little more room than we needed and some of our members (including yours truly) wandered around the second floor looking for the meeting room for a while.
I remind you that the U of A Rotaract Club is hosting a fundraiser “Rotaraction for Change” again this year. This year the proceeds will go to the Dogs with Wings organisation. It will be at the McKay Avenue School on the evening of March 28. Our Club sponsors the U of A Rotaract Club and we should do our best to get enough members out to fill a table.

Irene Cetinski was a great supporter of the Mustard Seed and we are hosting a Mustard Seed dinner in her honour on April 2nd  name. . Stay tuned for more information.

Our speaker this week was  Anne-Marie Kallal. Anne-Marie is executive of CCILEX – Cultural Connections Institute - The learning Exchange.
Anne-Marie talked about the important work that her organization to help newcomers to our City learn the language, learn our culture and engage.
Since 2003, CCI-LEX has been changing the lives of thousands of newcomers to Edmonton by promoting the personal growth of adult learners through English language instruction and the exchange of cultural knowledge.
CCILEX’s vision is that all English language learners are able to engage and contribute to their communities in a way that is meaningful to them.

Feb 26 week in Rotary

Week of Feb 26 2020
We did not have a regular meeting this week but five of us got together for an informal gathering over breakfast. We shared fellowship. While we were there we spotted a note that had been posted on the wall in remembrance of David Winfield by one of his many other Clubs.
 On Thursday evening many of us gathered again at the Lions Head Pub for a Pub Night. There was a power point “slide show” pf Dave Winfield phot0s, great British atmosphere, adult beverages and lots of stories about Dave shared by our members, people from other Clubs, people from Rotary District and other friends of Dave. It was a great event. Thank you for putting it all together Elizabeth.

Sad news

On Saturday February 8 2020 our Club lost two important people.

One of our longest term members, past president, dedicated members, our anthem singer, speaker coordinator and good friend David Winfield passed on Saturday morning.

David was a great friend, a loyal Rotarian and the life of any party. His booming laugh would fill any room. If Dave was in a room everyone knew it.

He will be sadly missed by the club and all of his many friends.

Almost at the same time, in the same hospital, our valued member Ace Cetinski lost his wife Irene.

Our deepest condolences go out to Ace and his family and to Dave's family.

Details of the services for Dave and Irene:

Dave:
Saturday, February 22 at 11 am at St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church of Canada, 11111 57 Ave NW, with a reception afterward in the basement hall.

Irene:
Friday, February 14 at 10 am at the Glenwood funeral Home in Sherwood Park.

Additionally - Pub Night in honour of Dave Winfield will be at the Lion's Head Pub from 5:30 - 8 p.m. on February 27.  All are welcome.  Please send me photos you have of Dave in the meantime and I will put together a powerpoint of memories.

February 4 speaker

August 21 Meeting
We had a disappointing turnout for a great speaker this week.
Jamie Pallet advised that the U of A Rotaract Club is hosting a fundraiser “Rotaraction for Change” again this year. This year the proceeds will go to the Dogs with Wings organisation. It will be at the McKay Avenue School on the evening of March 28. Our Club sponsors the U of A rotaract Club and we should do our best to get enough members out to fill a table.
Our own Jamie Pallett is a pickle ball instructor at the Meadows Rec Center. He offered to organise a pickle ball event for the membership.
Elizabeth Bonkink advised that the Edmonton Community Foundation is hosting a donor appreciation event at the Alberta Museum. She will forward invitations to us. These are always great events. I encourage everyone to make an effort to attend.
Our speaker was Jonathon Robb from Caregivers Alberta.   http://www.caregiversalberta.ca/. Caregivers Alberta is a support organisation for caregivers in Alberta.
Jonathon talked about the number and demographics of persons who are caregivers in Alberta and the pressures and workloads they face. He advised us that;
1.Most caregivers do not even realise that they are caregivers until they are in trouble;
2.On average they send 12 to 20 hours a week providing care for their loved one;
3.They come in all ages and both genders (almost 20% of caregivers are under 20 and close to 50% are men)
4.Some of the consequences that caregivers have to deal with as a result of taking on the job of caring for their loved ones include;
a.Survivor guilt
b.Feelings of guilt about not being able to provide the time they need for other relationships;
c.Depression;
d.Loss of income;
e.Physical challenges;
f.Isolation;
g.Negotiating with the health care professionals
Although Jonathon did say that donations to the organisation are needed and would be appreciated his call for help included;
1.More understanding of the caregiver role;
2.Referrals to the organisation to caregivers we know who could use their support
3.Political advocacy

january 22 2020

Our meeting this week was at the McKay Avenue school in downtown Edmonton.

a dozen hardy members braved snowy and treacherous roads to attend.

We watched a film about the rise of nazism and anti-semetism in Germany and Europe in the 1940s and how Anne lived and died in those times.

After the film we were treated to a tour of the Anne Frank exhibit. A very moving, heartbreaking and thogt provoking experience.

Thank You Cindy!

Coming up next month
On the 22nd we will be at McKay school it will include a tour of the Anne Frank exhibit
On the 29th we will be at the Center for Autism
Our speaker this week was our on David Keam. David lead a very good discussion of western alienation. We talked about the historical and economic reasons that there is real anger in Alberta about Alberta’s place in Confederation. We have members from both political camps.
Jamie Pallett, Judy Wilson and I attended a “speed mentor” event with the U of A Rotaract Club on Saturday the 18th. It was a great experience and we met some truly impressive young people.I suspect that we got more out of the event than the participating Rotaractors did.  If they host another event I strongly recommend our members to participate.

December 3 report

Posted by bri on Dec 05, 2019
We had a good, reasonably attended, breakfast meeting on December 3.

Unfortunately we did not have a speaker so we just had a general fellowship meeting. Judy arrived before breakfast was served. She gave a great discussion on the level of morale, the quality of management and general efficiency of our City administration. Her discussion prompted a lively exchange.

Shannon reported that Dave Winfield is celebrating his 40th year in Rotary! Unfortunately Dave did not hear him as he was actively selling Shriner Christmas cakes at the time.

Judy reported that she is still looking for a few volunteers to man the Salvation Army kettles this week. If you can help please call her.

Elizabeth reminded us that;
  1. There is still time to get your money in for Rotary Foundation this year;
  2. Potluck for Polio is scheduled for January 17, 2010 (mark the date in your calendar)

Gary reported that he is collecting the gifts for Christmas hampers. If you do not have the time, or the imagination, to shop for gifts you can give him $50.00 or such amount as you can afford and he and Elizabeth will purchase gifts for you;

For those of you who could not make it to our “no meeting meeting” at the IHOP on Wednesday November 27. You missed a great meeting. I have attached a picture of all the members who joined me that morning for fellowship and pancakes.

Judy Wilson was in a motor vehicle accident. She is recovering from her injuries. Get well soon Judy.
We need volunteers to see off the Dreams take Flight  kids and chaperones (including our own David Keam and Gary Smith) on the morning of September 18. If you can join us please email me so we can get an idea of how many volunteers we will have.
Our club has signed up to plant trees on September 19. Please email Deb Jack for details and to let her know that you will attend.
Our guest speaker was Matt Jeneroux. Matt is the Conservative Member of Parliament representing Edmonton Riverbend and the current Shadow Minister of Infrastructure, Communities & Urban Affairs.
Matt was in pre election mode and he talked about;
  1. Climate Change - He said that climate change is debateable but he believes in it. He does not think that a carbon tax helps to address the issue. He believes that the answer is through technology, tax credits for patents and dinner will be on May 2nd.  Please contact Ken for tickets.
  2. Pipelines – He is pessimistic about the trans mountain pipeline construction. He does not share the Liberal’s optimism.
  3. Abortion rights – Matt is personally pro choice. The conservative platform provides that the party will not introduce legislation that would restrict a woman’s right to choose but if such legislation is proposed they would allow their members to “vote their conscience”.
Thanks to Matt for an interesting and important presentation

Overheard August 21

Posted by Brian Liddell on Aug 26, 2019
We had a great turnout this week.
Zanib Pannu, our last scholarship recipient this week joined us for breakfast and shared a little of her education plans with yus.
David Keam advised that he will be joining Gary Smith on the Dreams Take Flight trip this year. They will be leaving on the morning of September 18. Once again they are asking our members to show up at the airport around 2:00 am to direct the participants and their parents to the US departure gate. Please mark your calendars and try to come out. It is a great experience (even though it robs you of a lot of sleep).
Robust Reds Update:
  1. Only 5 weeks to go until the event (September 28)
  2. We are looking for silent auction items. Please try to get them in asap (It makes Pat’s job a lot easier)
  3. We need help selling tickets;
  4. We are asking everyone to donate a bottle of wine for the wine draw. If you have not already done so please bring a bottle to the next meeting (or give $20 to Lionell and he will provide one for you)
Our Cindy reported that her school (McKay school) will be hosting an Anne Frank exhibit. She is looking for volunteers.
Our speaker this week was Minister Amarjit Sohi.  Amarjit gave an interesting (per election) presentation. He talked about the record of our Liberal government. He mentioned;
  1. Tax cuts
  2. Child tax benefits;
  3. Infrastructure investments
  4. Purchase of a pipeline.
We had an interesting discussion about pipelines and “creeping bigotry and hate crimes.
I thought that our members were very hospitable to Amarjit

We had a good turnout this week.
Lionell conducted a “name the author quotations” .  We failed miserably and entertainingly.
Pat provided a Robust Reds planning update;
.               only 6 weeks to go
.               looking for members to assist with silent auction items, wine bottles for the wine raffle and ticket sales
Just a reminder, Armajit Sohi mp will be our speaker on August 21.
Our speaker this week was Karen Potts. Karen is a teacher and a life coach and her talk was about mental wellness and she gave us a very thought provoking and important presentation.
Karen told us that she had considered giving her presentation on “the importance of being happy”. She told us that statistics show that happy people live 10% to 15% longer. Given the average age of our club I think that is a very important message.
Karen shared her personal story of struggling with depression, how she coped with it and how she has learned to adapt and overcome.
Some of Karen’s tips for fostering mental wellness included;
  1. Taking time out;
  2. Exercising “planned neglect”. (as Dr. Hook says “let the loose end drag)
    •
  3. Be kind to yourself. Avoid self criticism
  4. Drink lots of water
  5.  When eating consider “Forks over Knives”
  6. Stay active
  7. Surround yourself with good people
Finally, Karen talked about the importance of normalising mental illness. We can talk about cancer, why cant we talk about mental illness the same way? No one is embarrassed or ashamed to say they have cancer. Why should we be embarrassed or ashamed to say we have a mental illness?

July 24 Bulletin

Our meeting on July 24th was well attended.

Our meeting start was delayed because of technical difficulties. (We needed extra time and expertise in order to set up our speaker’s video)
The breakfast we were served was somewhat disappointing. The Hotel had been on a pretty good run serving tasty meals but this was definitely a step backwards.

Our new president, Shannon, is somewhat soft spoken. The members this week were rather unruly and kept talking while he tried to start the meeting. I am sure we will do better next meeting.

Lorne Parker announced that he is making plans for a Club visit to Mozambique. More details to come.

Robust Reds committee meeting at Trina’s house on Tuesday July 30, 2019

Board Meeting / Pub night at the faculty Club on Thursday August 1,2019. 5:00 pm

No meeting on Wednesday July 31. Will we see you at IHOP?

Our speaker this week was Mark Quinn. Mark shared a short video about the history of Fort Edmonton then talked to us about the plans for Fort Edmonton. https://www.fortedmontonpark.ca/2019-enhancement/

Our sympathies to the family of our friend and past member Tom Lamont. Tom passed away on July 24. He was a good guy and he will be missed. A Celebration of Tom's life will be held at the Edmonton Scottish Society, 3105 - 101 St., Edmonton T6X 1A1 on Sunday, August 18, 2019 at 3 p.m.

Notes from our July 17, 2019 breakfast meeting
Deb Jack, chairman of the Robust Reds Committee that plans for our 13th Robust Reds event are well underway. We need help from the members. Specifically, at this time we are looking for;
  1. Gathering silent auction items;
  2. Recruiting sponsors;
  3. Wine bottles for the wine raffle;
  4. Ticket sales;
Jamie Pallett extended an invitation from the Rotaract Club for us to join them to volunteer at the Taste of Edmonton. If you are interested please contact the Rotaract Club, Wyatt Labaron, directly @ _rotaract@ualberta.ca
President Shannon arrived with a microphone and speaker. Our club meetings are now amplified.
Our own Doug McEwan has received his 10th Paul Harris. Our information is that the Rotary foundation does not give a award for more than ten Paul Harris awards so we wanted to recognize Doug’s extraordinary contribution. President Shannon presented him with a plaque.
Our Speaker was our own David Winfield. Dave read a poem about what Rotarians do. Paraphrased by me it said; https://www.facebook.com/groups/GatewayRotary/?ref=bookmarksinto a “joke off” between two the two Daves (Winfield and Dorcus
Winfield told a joke about squirrels then
Dorcus told a joke about pigs and cows.

July 3 bulletin

July 3rd, 2019
Our first breakfast meeting under our new president, Shannon Troke.
We had a small but enthusiastic turnout (only 15). Perhaps the lower turnout was because it is summer and perhaps it was because our treasurer, Pat Coyle, was handing out invoices for the next Rotary Year.
Before past president David Keam turned the gavel over to Shannon he;
  1. Presented a “Rotarian of the Year” to two or our hardest working members, Pat Coyle and Elizabeth Bonkink. He reminded us all of how much work they put into making our Club a success and how critical their contributions are to our success. (I think that both people are very strong members and David could noe have made better choices)
  2. Handed over his “Presidents Pin” to Shannon;
  3. Announced that our long time member, Doug McEwan, has reached a milestone with the Rotary Foundation. He has donated $10,000.00 US to the Rotary Foundation. Unfortunately Doug was not at our meeting last week. Hopefully he will return soon so that we can properly recognize his achievement and his generosity.
  4. Thanked his outgoing board of directors and announced that, instead of giving gifts to each outgoing director he was making a donation to our Scholarship fund with the Edmonton Community foundation. (Thanks David, I think that is a great idea)
David Winfield then read the official “inauguration speech” and Shannon was inducted as our new president.
Shannon then assumed his presidency and;
  1. Announced his new board;
  2. Announced that next year the board meetings will be held on the same night and location as our monthly Pub Nights; (first meeting August 1 at the Faculty Club)
  3. Summarised his goals and proposed schedule for the upcoming your (it looks like we will have a great year)

June 19 Meeting

Posted by Brian Liddell on Jun 22, 2019
Our meeting on June 19th was much better attended than last week.
The meeting started very well when it was held in the “Top of the inn” room for the first time in a long time and the breakfast was a quiche. Unfortunately the Hotel kind of ruined the moment when it did not have enough meals for everyone and our guests (scholarship winner Miji Kim and her mother) had to wait until everyone else had finished their meal before they got their meals!
We had the pleasure of meeting the recipient of one of our 2019 scholarships, Miji Kim. Miji is graduating from Harry Ainlee high school this week. She will be travelling to South Korea for the summer and then moving to Montreal where she is enrolled as a first year student at McGill. She has plans to become a doctor and volunteer with Doctors without borders.
Our feature speaker was Murray McCann. Murray talked about the “Homes for Heroes foundation that he founded. He stated his belief that
“if we are prepared to send youth to risk their lives for our country we must be prepared to support them when they return home”
Murray learned that too often the homeless person that you see on the street was once a proud soldier. Our veterans often have trouble transitioning back to civilian life and end up on the streets. His foundation is constructing transition villages to provide housing for homeless veterans wto help them transition back to civilian life. The villages consist of 20 tiny houses. A village has already been built in Calgary and land has been acquired and planning is underway for a village in Edmonton. https://edmontonjournal.com/news/local-news/edmontons-first-tiny-home-village-would-serve-homeless-military-veterans
Shannon Troke’s changeover party was held on Saturday the 15th. I am told that it was a great party but past president David Keam could not attend because he was at the emergency department having his hand treated. His dog bit him!

New Story June 17 2019

Posted on Jun 16, 2019
Our meeting on June 12th was a fellowship meeting. We did not have a speaker but we did have lots of interesting conversation.
Unfortunately our attendance was distressingly low. There were only 15 members in attendance. Hopefully we can do better next week. We will have an interesting and important speaker. Mr. Murray McAnn will be speaking about the “Homes for Heroes” project. We encourage you to bring a guest to hear Murray speak.
We had a brief update on Robust Reds preparations. Planning is well underway. Members are encouraged to;
  1.  begin canvassing for silent auction items;
  2. Sell tickets early. Although we do not have an “early bird” discount for ticket sales it is important to get an early indication of the number of attendees we can expect;
We had a Scholarship Committee meeting/Pub night this week. We have selected 3 students to be recipients of our $1,500.00 scholarship this year. They will each attend one of our meetings to meet our group and to receive their award. The first student, Miji Kim, will join us next week. Miji is an impressive young woman and I encourage you to come out next week to meet her.
Shannon Troke’s changeover party was held on Saturday the 15th. Unfortunately, your reporter was not there. I look forward to a report next meeting

Mozambique Update

Posted by brian Liddell on Jun 07, 2019
Our speaker this week was our own Dr. Lorne Parker.

Lorne talked about his recent trip to Mozambique and his plans for further school development in that country.

Lorne had a rocky start to his presentation. His laptop had “upgraded” software so, of course, his carefully prepared presentation would not work. However, being an ex military man, Lorne was able to “Improvise, Adapt and Overcome”.

Lorne visited our school in Xia Xia and reported that the enrollment is up further and the bathrooms have been completed. The wall had been damaged in the recent typhoon but, otherwise, the school is in great shape.

Lorne also talked about his visit to the Canadian Embassy in Maputo. He told us that the Ambassador had visited a school in the Maputo region and been dismayed by the conditions. Over 2500 kids were being educated in the outdoors under trees. The washroom conditions were so poor that they were a health hazard to the students and staff. The Embassy had heard about our school in Xia Xia and they invited Lorne to meet with them and asked him to help them with a project to construct new washrooms and a school on that site.

The Embassy has negotiated with the local government so that they will match our construction on the site and he is reaching out to other Clubs to assist with our funding.

Hopefully we will have our new charitable society, Steven’s Hoe for Mozambique”, in place to assist with fundraising for the project.

Thanks Lorne for all of your good work. You make our club look good.

April 10 speaker

Posted by Brian Liddell on Apr 13, 2019
Our speaker this week was Kevin Royle, with the Edmonton Fire department. Kevin is our club’s nominee for the Integrity Award this year.
Kevin told us how he had visited the Ukraine on a rotary sponsored trip and toured their fire halls hospitals and clinics and been dismayed by their condition.  The equipment was old fashioned and dilapidated. Everything was underfunded and under resourced. His later research found that Fire death rates in the Ukraine were approximately 10 x . (5% compared to .5%) greater than in Edmonton.
Kevin decided to do something about this. He started with the Edmonton fire Department and gathered surplus gear to donate to the Ukrainian firehalls. He recruited experienced people to assist and filled a container and returned to the Ukraine to deliver the supplies he had gathered. Special efforts were made to ensure that the equipment got to the places that it need to go and it was not diverted through graft or fraudulent activity.
Kevin’s work is now conducted through an organisation he has fashioned called “Firefighter for Aid for Ukraine” https://www.firefighteraidukraine.com/
Kevin’s project has expanded and there are fire departments throughout Canada and internationally that are now participating. The program has also expanded to donate equipment to other countries.
Kevin is currently fundraising and preparing for a 2nd trip to the Ukraine.
Kevin is looking for volunteers to assist in cleaning and packing equipment for his second trip.

Kenton told us that the iniatative was started  over 30 years ago. It’s goal is to address the drastic under representation of indigenous professionals in the health professions.
They do outreach to students in public schools in Edmonton and throughout Alberta to interest them in science and encourage them to pursue education and a career in the health professions.
When indigenous students come to the university they help them with their application and provide assistance to help them adapt.
Kenton talked about the numbers of seats that are available in the faculties for indigenous students and the successes the program has enjoyed n it’s 30 year history.

Our speaker this week was Simran Dhillon.Simran was the president of the  Harry Ainlay high school Interact Club and she is the one who was instrumental in getting that Club restarted.

She has gone on to Univiersity and she has created Youth - lead initiative she calls called F.L.Y or FLY.

F.L.Y stands for First Love Yourself it is a creative program designed for at-risk children, they conduct projects that are focused on arts/crafts, experimental, and educational projects that have shown to have proven benefits on a child’s development. Through creativity and curiosity, F.L.Y aims to teach children the importance of thinking outside the box and understanding their full, unique potential.

She started this program, where the principal identified children who had at-risk living environments. Her and her friends worked alongside these students.

Simran gave a great presentation. She is clearly a very bright young woman who is making a difference.

Yona speaker

Posted by Brian Liddell on Feb 02, 2019
ur speakers this week was Amanda Bannister from Yona – Systema . http://www.yona-sistema.com/#new-page-1-section).
Amanda gave an impassioned presentation about her organisation. She has been involved with Yona (a Edmonton Orchestra sponsored musical enrichment program for underprivileged children.
Youth Orchestra of Northern Alberta - Sistema (YONA-Sistema) is a program offered by the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra.  This program is modeled on the ground-breaking El Sistema project in Venezuela which uses music for social change and teaches the values of unity, harmony, and mutual compassion.
Five days a week, for almost three hours each day, 75 students receive group instrument lessons, led by qualified teachers, at no cost to their families. In this caring environment, students are given nutritious snacks, homework help, and engage in free play and physical activity, and are then bussed safely home.
Each year, another group of students participates in a "YONA Explorers" program, building their musical and social skills in an introduction to the YONA philosophy before joining the full 5-day-per-week program.
Amanda talked about how the program has 7 components;
  1. Nutrition;
  2. Instrument time;
  3. Break time;
  4. Musicianship;
  5. Choral and movement;
  6. Academia and
  7. Expressive art.
She shared photos of some of the students, talked about some success stories and showed an inspiring video.
Our Club has been a sponsor for the Yona program for the past 5 years and Lorne Parker is the member of our Club who has been the champion for Yona within the Club.
We are proud of our affiliation with this great program.

Our speaker this week was our own Ken Saunders.
Ken has been a Rotarian since the 1960s so it was time for him to give another classification presentation and he gave us a very interesting and engaging classification talk.
Ken talked about being born in and growing up in a tough district in Winnipeg. He talked about being a wartime child whose parents were both involved in the WWII war effort. His dad was in th army and his mom worked in a munitions factory.
He talked about the fear of polio that was rampant when he was a child and his memories of fishing and hunting with his Dad.
Ken started his working life with the Hudsons bay company. He talked about the different outposts that he was posted to and his experiences running the company stores, buying furs and how he met and married his wife, Iris.
Although we all think of Ken as a fur trader it turns out that he left the Hudsons Bay company and went into the real estate business in the 1970s.
Ken distributed copies of old employment contracts with the Hudson Bay company, newspaper articles and innuit art.
Thanks for sharing Ken. It was very interesting.

No  Breakfast on November 21 2018
We did not have a breakfast meeting this week but our Club was very busy.
On the evening of November 21 we gathered at the Faculty Club on the U of A campus for a great meal then the  Honourable Anne McLellan spoke. Anne was the chair of the Cannabis Committee, she spoke about the Committee’s hearings, it’s findings, some of the initial observations from legalisation and her predictions. It was a great evening and we all learned something.
Then, on the weekend we assembled to ring the bells and man the Salvation Army Kettle at the Superstore on Calgary Trail. An opportunity to do some good, be seen in the community and enjoy a little fellowship.

Evening at the Theater

Posted by Brian Liddell on Oct 14, 2018
SPECIAL REMEMBRANCE DAY CELEBRATION

We have secured the entire Varscona Theatre for a performance of 'The Comedy Company" on November 7 (a Wednesday) - see below for the outline and the details  - it is a story about the PPCLI in WW1.
  • At the performance, we are planning to have extensive information available about our club, our projects (Mozambique), and Rotary in general.
  • We are going to invite the military community to attend through the Military Family Resource Centre - a cross-section of our community that we have not really tapped into for new members.
  • We are going to encourage Gateway members to bring guests that they think might make a good Rotarian.
  • Deb Jack has a friend in Calgary who is the creator of the memory project in Calgary with the crosses on Memorial Drive (Deb has more details on this.  He is being honored by the PPCLI with a 21 gun salute for his efforts this year as he is named Citizen of the Year.
  • Deb has asked him to come and speak to our club at our meeting on November 7 in the morning, then a shortened version at the start of the play - where Dave Keam will also speak about Gateway and what Rotary does in the world - to encourage the guests to learn about Rotary during the intermission and chat to a member.
  • We know you usually get a speaker for the Remembrance Day meeting but are hopeful this will work just as well as November 7 is our meeting closes to Remembrance Day.
  • ......whew - that is about all of it!  coffee if you have time - would be nice to catch up!  Deb can fill in the spots about the fellow from Calgary.

What’s So Funny About Mud, Death And Machine Gun Fire?

A FICTIONAL RECOUNTING OF AN ABSOLUTELY TRUE STORY!

An extraordinary true Canadian story of the members of the Princess Patricia's Light Infantry Division. Company members were asked by their commander to put together a comedy/musical revue to entertain the troops to boost morale. During some of the most difficult fighting of the war they would conceive, write and perform comedy sketches and musical parodies to lift the spirits of the soldiers. With the help of surprisingly realistic comedy scenes and startlingly pretty cross-dressing performances they would become wildly popular.

·  IN COMMEMORATION OF THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE END OF WORLD WAR 1

Starring:
Julien Arnold, Nathan Cuckow, Sheldon Elter, Jesse Gervais, Steven Greenfield, Andrew MacDonald-Smith and Nick Samoil

  1. Our Club Meeting on the 15th was a “Rotary Meeting”. We did not have an outside speaker. Instead some of our longest term members shared stories of how they joined Rotary.
  2. Judy Wilson told us how she tried to join Rotary in the 80s when her and David Winfield were working in Kanaskis. Her application was rejected because Rotary did not allow women members then. She persisted and later joined our Club (invited by David Winfield). Judy talked about the Rotary history and how that rule was changed. She shared some “fun and caring” stories about the early days of our Club
  3. Peter Elder joined our club in the early 90s when it was still called the “Millwoods Rotary Club”. He talked about the dissention and lawsuit that nearly lead to the demise or our Club and did cause the Club to change it’s name to the “Rotary Club of Edmonton Gateway”. He circulated one of our Club Bulletins from the early 90s. It was in a paper book format and contained pictures of some people who are still members of our Club. Peter also talked about some of the Club’s early projects including;

June 13 speaker

Our Speakers this week was our own Lorne Parker.

Lorne talked about the history and the future of our Club’s involvement in the education system in Mozambique.

Mozambique is one of the poorest countries in the world and we have made a significant contribution to the education system for children in that Country.

Our involvement began in 2005 when Lorne visited Xia Xia Mozambique and he was invited to tour a local school. The circumstances he saw there were dismal. He saw approximately 400 elementary age students studying in grass shacks and under shade trees. He was challenged by a good friend of his to do something about it. He brought that challenge back to our club and the rest is history! We now have a school, a high school and washroom facilities serving over 1700 students!

Lorne has insisted that all construction be done using local contracters and that those contracters have an apprenticeship program.

Lorne has also been instrumental in organising the construction of a new school in Pusa Mozambique to replace their school that was destroyed in a cyclone.

Lorne brought an exciting new project to the Club. We have been invited by the Canadian Consulate to partner with them in the construction of a new school in Mat9la Mozambique.

Our speaker this week was Mike Garsa. Mike is principal with www.SuccessToolChest.com   and www.FindaMentor.com
Mike is a successful business man who has built several successful businesses. Mike talked about the issues that all businesses share. He described them as “people and numbers”.
Mike talked about the importance of providing a good workplace and the magic of masterminding.

Napoleon Hill’s definition
The concept of the “master mind alliance” was introduced by Napoleon Hill in his book from the 1920s, The Law of Success, and expanded upon in his 1930s book, Think And Grow Rich. While Napoleon Hill called it a “master mind alliance,” it’s been shortened and modernized to “mastermind group.” Mastermind groups have been around since the beginning of time. Even Benjamin Franklin belonged to such a group, which he called a Junto. But it was Napoleon Hill who explained it clearly and encouraged people to gather together in a structured, repeatable environment for the success of all. Napoleon Hill wrote about the mastermind group principle as:
“The coordination of knowledge and effort of two or more people, who work toward a definite purpose, in the spirit of harmony.”
He continues…
“No two minds ever come together without thereby creating a third, invisible intangible force, which may be likened to a third mind [the master mind].”

Thank You Mike for an interesting presentation.

Kevin recruited the local fire departments, local Ukrainian Cultural Clubs and local rotary Clubs to gather an ship equipment and supplies to the front line personnel in the Ukraine.

Kevin shared stories of how they organised the collection of items, how the packed the equipment, how the equipment was shipped and the techniques they used to prevent the supplies being diverted to the black market.

November 29 speaker

Posted by Brian Liddell on Dec 02, 2017
Our speaker this week was Lorne Parker
Lorne gave us an update on our Mozambique school projects.
1.       Xia Xia
a.       Construction of the High Scholl block is now complete
b.      The High school included a gymnasium. The school population has grown so much that it is now being used for classrooms;
c.       The next project is construction of washroom facilities.
2.       Pussa
a.       The school in Pussa Mozambique (2 hours north of Xia Xia ) was destroyed in a Cyclone;
b.      Our Club, in partnership with other Rotary Clubs undertook to rebuild the school;
c.       The school was rebuilt but the school population has grown and it is now necessary to build a second building
Lorne advises that the unique element to our school projects, and the reason they are successful, is that we do not just build and leave. We have remained committed to the projects and ensured their sustainability.
News flash
Lorne found the following news article from Mozambique. He will trying to get some of the government supplied desks.
Maputo — Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi on Saturday launched a national programme to produce school desks, under which the government intends to distribute, by next year, 140,000 desks.
Since two pupils sit at a standard desk, and each desk will be used in up to three shifts in the schools this could allow almost a million children to study at desks, rather than sitting on the ground.
Speaking at the launch ceremony at the Sansao Muthemba primary school in the western province of Tete, Nyusi said that the wood to produce the desks comes from the timber seized earlier this year in “Operation Trunk”. This was the crackdown on illegal timber operations led by the Ministry of Land, Environment and Rural Development, in which dozens of timber yards, many of them owned by Chinese businesses, were raided, and over 222,000 cubic metres of logs were seized.
Nyusi estimated the current shortage of school desks at 800,000 - which means there are about three million pupils who attend classes sitting on the floor.
“Aware that the availability of desks has a positive influence on the quality of education, the governmnent defined as a priority in its Five Year Programme for 2015/2019 the acquisition and distribution of 700,000 desks”, said Nyusi.
In 2015 and 2016 the government purchased and distributed 151,000 desks. In the third quarter of this year a further 40,600 desks were acquired.
“From 2015 to now we have managed to comply with 27 per cent of the target we planned”, said the President.

Posted by Brian Liddell on Nov 22, 2017
Our guest speaker this week was Alexander Pecuh from the city of Edmonton.
Alexander is with the City Transportation Department and he talked about the plans for expansion of our LRT “rapid” transit system.
Alexander advised that construction of our LRT system started in 1978 with the Edmonton to Clareview line.
Currently they are experiencing some problems with the signalling system for the Metro line but the contractor “Thales Canada” has an otherwise very good reputation.
Construction for the Valley Line SE to Millwoods is currently underway and it is expected to be completed in 2020.
The next stage will be construction of the Valley Line to Lewis Farms.

Jordan Close and Rachel Poelzer from the University of Alberta Rotaract Club.

Fundago identifies worthy projects in Nicaragua and “Roots of Change” fundraises for those projects here in Canada.
Jordan and Rachel travelled to Nicaragua to participate in the grand opening for one of those projects (a community Center” and then to board with a local family and participate in the construction of the community water storage facility in Cinco Pinas.
They gave a very informative and well prepared power point presentation. They talked about the hospitality and generosity of their hosts and the profound differences between their lifestyle and the lifestyle we enjoy in Canada and thanked us for the small contribution that our cub made towards the project.

Our guest speaker this week was Ellie Shuster from the Learning Disabilities Association.

Ellie told us that Learning Disabilities (LDs) are specific neurological disorders that affect the brain's ability to store, process, retrieve or communicate information. They are invisible and lifelong.

She talked about the importance of diagnosing learning disabilities early so that children can be taught coping techniques that will enable them to adapt. Children who do not receive early intervention have much higher odds of ending up with low self esteem, ending up in prison or even committing suicide.

The Association is currently lobbying to get more awareness and better responsses in the schools.

Thanks Ellie for an interesting presentation.

May 14 Gossip

News and Gossip for the week of May 14, 2017

1) Kylie announced that our Winemaker Dinner was a complete success. Again the Club and our sponsored charity the McKay Archives and Museum enjoyed a great evening of food by Chef Paul Shuffeld - Workshop Eatery and South AfricianWines from Spier. The event netted $14,000 dollars. The money will be split 60/40 between the Archives Museum and the Mozambique school project. The success of the event was driven by Cindy Davis passion for the Museum and the great of gathering gift card donations and the sale of tickets. Three cheers to Cindy and the committee. Another round of applause for David Keam who not only delivered 500 wine glasses for the event he and his daughter polished each one. Big thank to David and the Renaissance Edmonton Airport Hotel.

2) Pat thanked the club for the support they gave his daughters grade five class by voting on the one minute video the students made for the Canada Energy Contest. Sara's class won second place and $500.00. She plans to take the class to the Space Science Center requested the club help by paying the $168 yellow bus fee. Sara teaches at Glendale School which is an identified Apple School. Everything that is done to support this school aids in providing each student with a better chance of success.

May 3 speaker

Our guest speaker this week was Taina Lorenz. Taina is the musical director for the Cosmopolitan Music Society.  (http://www.cosmopolitanmusic.org/ )
Taina was a very interesting speaker. She talked about the history and mission of the Cosmopolitan Music Society.
It is the oldest Music Society in Edmonton (over 50  years) and it’s mission is to “make music lovers into music makers”.
She told us about the Edmonton School Boys band (formed in the 1940s and still performing).
The Cosmopolitan Society has a number of bands, for all levels of musicians, and they perform at a variety of venues. There feature event is the annual “Lest We Forget” concert that they perform for our veterans and military members each year. I had the privilege of attending one of those concerts with my mother a few years ago. It was a great evening.
The Society will also be hosting a band fest in Borden Park in July.
Taina was an enthusiastic speaker and her passion for making music and bringing people to the joys of making music was infectious.
Thank You Taina!

Both Dave Douglas and Lionell Usunier showed up in Oiler jerseys! Great team support guys. Can we get the whole club to show up in orange next week?

News and Gossip for the week of April 12, 2017
  1. Next week we will welcome our newest member to the Club, Deborah Jack.
  2. Your reporter attended the wind up meeting of the University of Alberta Rotaract Club. It was a great event and I was honoured to be invited. The Club presented awards to it’s members and to it’s sponsor Clubs although the Rotaracters have impressed me with their enthusiasm, generosity and goodwill they did demonstrate a remarkable lack of culinary taste (must be due to the beer and kraft dinner diet of university students). They awarded our Club with the “BEST BREAKFAST AWARD”;
  3. Lionell showed up in a Oiler Jersey and ball cap. I fervently hope that he is wearing that again next week. It would be unbearable if Dorcus shows up in Maple Leaf garb and Lorne is wearing his Habs jersey but the Oilers are golfing by next week.
  4. We were treated by the YESS Society to a fantastic breakfast.
  5. Dave Winfield reported that the Westlock Convention was a great success.
  6. President Ken suggested that we consider putting together a significant group of members to attend the next convention in Fort McMurray in September. Sounds like fun.

Speaker April 5, 2017
Our speaker this week was Gem Munro from the Amarok Society.
Gem and his wife Tanniss travelled to Bangladesh to found the Amarok Society. The Amarok Society teaches uneducated mothers how to read and write, and then teaches the mothers to be neighbourhood teachers – educating their own and their neighbours’ children every day in their homes.
Jim talked about the effect that his organization is having on the women and children in the slums of Bangladesh and elsewhere in the world. It is his belief that the best hope for peace in this world is through offering education to it’s most underprivileged citizens.
Thanks to Jim for a thought provoking presentation.

Speaker March 22

Our guest speaker on March 22 was Mark Hall. Mark is Executive Director, Blatchford Redevelopment.

Mark talked about the history, origins and progress of the Blatchford Development on the old City Centre airport site.

The development was started by Edmonton city Council when the City Centre airport was closed and it’s operations were transferred to the International Airport. Council’s goal was to develop a sustainable community. To that end the design has been centered around making the development carbon neutral, and not car centered.

Mark expects construction on the first phase to begin this spring.

This is a very interesting and forwarding thinking project.

Problems of the 1st World

Who hates it when you go to the bathroom, sit down to do your business in a private stall only to find that there is no toilet paper! Now imagine what it would be like if you didn’t have a private stall, you didn’t have a toilet to sit on and you most definitely don’t have toilet paper. All of a sudden no toilet paper seems inconsequential.
