Imagine a classroom where children are safe, where they can focus on their lessons without the distraction of unsafe conditions, and where they have the resources they need to thrive.
That's the vision of Steven's Hope-an organization dedicated to building schools and supporting infrastructure to provide clean, safe and comfortable learning spaces for children in Mozambique.
What is Steven's Hope All About?
For 15 years, the Rotary Club of Edmonton Gateway, supported by several Rotary Clubs in Rotary International District 5370, the Province of Alberta Community Initiatives Program and in-country (Mozambique) agents, have been building schools in Mozambique.
How it all Started
Dr. Parker visited Mozambique and noticed a remarkable entrepreneurial spirit among the kids selling souvenirs. Steven, who spoke excellent English, became friends with Dr. Parker's family. Steven had to leave school to support his family, but with financial assistance, he completed high school and pursued university. In 2018, Steven passed away from hepatitis, but his perseverance, positive outlook, and entrepreneurial spirit inspired Dr. Parker to create a foundation named in his honor. Steven would be honored to have his name associated with this work.
Build Schools.Build Hope.
Without international intervention, the majority of student will continue to meet in the most rudimentary of classroom structures with little chance of ever breaking the cycle of poverty. While primary school is mandatory (K-grade 3), secondary school is not. There are only 18 schools that offer classes through to grade 12. Poverty is often why children can't continue their education with many children dropping out to go to work to help support their family.
Projects Completed and Underway
At the Macambucuine School site, a number of maintenance improvements, such as classroom blocks, restrooms, and security gates, are either finished or under construction. The modernization of the fresh water supply system is the most recent. The Macambucuine School site urgently needs more financing for maintenance in order to replace and repair the restrooms, upgrade the electrical system overall, and perform much-needed basic repairs throughout.

Esmino, Steven's younger brother, is currently pursuing his studies at a university located in the city of Xai Xai. He is a proud graduate of our esteemed school in Macambucuine, where he demonstrated his remarkable work ethic and steadfast determination. This hardworking young man possesses big dreams—dreams that encompass not only his own aspirations but also a hopeful vision for a brighter future for his entire family.
While Esmino is excelling academically, he now finds himself at a crucial juncture where he requires additional support to continue on this promising path. Specifically, he needs assistance to cover his monthly tuition fees and the essential transportation costs that allow him to attend classes.
Even more pressing is the immediate need for some necessary supplies to help him thrive in his academic journey. These include a dependable laptop, textbooks, clothing appropriate for university life, and other basic supplies crucial for any student. Despite his admirable efforts, Esmino simply lacks the means to raise these funds on his own. His situation highlights the urgent need for community support to help this dedicated young man achieve his goals and leverage his education for a better tomorrow.
