Our Speakers this week was our own Lorne Parker.
Lorne talked about the history and the future of our Club’s involvement in the education system in Mozambique.
Mozambique is one of the poorest countries in the world and we have made a significant contribution to the education system for children in that Country.
Our involvement began in 2005 when Lorne visited Xia Xia Mozambique and he was invited to tour a local school. The circumstances he saw there were dismal. He saw approximately 400 elementary age students studying in grass shacks and under shade trees. He was challenged by a good friend of his to do something about it. He brought that challenge back to our club and the rest is history! We now have a school, a high school and washroom facilities serving over 1700 students!
Lorne has insisted that all construction be done using local contracters and that those contracters have an apprenticeship program.
Lorne has also been instrumental in organising the construction of a new school in Pusa Mozambique to replace their school that was destroyed in a cyclone.
Lorne brought an exciting new project to the Club. We have been invited by the Canadian Consulate to partner with them in the construction of a new school in Mat9la Mozambique.
