The Rotary Club of Langley Central had a great time with youth and staff of the Boys and Girls Club of Langley as we presented them with a cheque for over $4,800. The funds were the result of our annual Hoop-a-thon event done with the other Rotary Clubs in Langley. The Rotary Club of Langley Central is excited to announce our new President, Annette Borrows. She took the podium for the first time recently for a high energy meeting that is setting the tone for her tenure. We congratulate and thank Annette for taking on this leadership role and look forward to a great year.

Our Club recently welcomed two of our Service Above Self Student Youth (SASSY) award recipients, Geena Sandhu and Emil Hung, to share their stories and experiences. Geena Sandhu, arts and culture winner, has consistently taken on leadership roles within the performing and literary arts to create meaningful opportunities for younger students. Emil Hung  founded the Mental Health Awareness Project “Wellness Week,” leading workshops and initiatives that reached more than 400 students. Our Club welcomed Langley Senior Resources Society Executive Director Kate Ludlam to our meeting recently as our Guest Speaker. She shared the incredible work they do to support seniors in Langley with recreation, engagement, food services, day care, and much much more. The Rotary Club of Langley Central was also proud to support their latest campaign to replace aging chairs in the facilities with a cheque for $3,000. 

Talia who attended Honoring Indigenous Peoples (HIP) Youth-to-Youth this year in Ontario recently joined our Club meeting to share her experiences. She was still bubbling from the experience that she called, “The best time of her life.” From the new people she met, to the learning about Indigenous culture she was so thankful for this fully funded experience at this young age. The Rotary Club of Langley Central was honored to present fifteen scholarships of $1,000 again this year to deserving graduates in Langley who exemplify the theme of “Service above self.” Congratulations to all these amazing young adults who begin their next step in life. The 4 Rotary Clubs of Langley recently presented the proceeds from our very successful March International Women's Day event. Union Gospel Mission’s Cedar Haven Women's Recovery Centre was the main beneficiary receiving a cheque for $7,500. Representatives of the Clubs were also given a tour of the facility and a chance to see all the important work they do. On August 7, 1954 during the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Vancouver, B.C., England’s Roger Bannister and Australian John Landy met for the first time in the one mile run at the newly constructed Empire Stadium.  Both men had broken the four minute barrier previously that year.  Bannister was the first to break the mark with a time of 3:59.4 on May 6th in Oxford, England.  Subsequently, on June 21st in Turku, Finland, John Landy became the new record holder with an official time of 3:58. The world watched eagerly as both men approached the starting blocks.  As 35,000 enthusiastic fans looked on, no one knew what would take place on that historic day. Promoted as “The Mile of the Century”, it would later be known as the “Miracle Mile”.

We often have speakers from the Rotary District talking about the Paul Harris Foundation and upcoming Conventions, today was a little different. Dave talked about the need to hire a sometimes forgotten sector of the workforce. Those with disabilities. Hopefully with Rotary at Work and people like Dave, the word will get out to the working community and if he can change one persons life to me that's a job well done.

The Rotary World Help Network includes some 40 metro Vancouver Rotary Clubs that co-operate to ship humanitarian aid, including medical and educational equipment and materials to developing countries. Since it's creation in 1992 the Rotary world help Network has combined the efforts of its many member clubs to ship containers with a total value of over 20 million dollars to countries throughout the world.

Hard work and a dedication to seeing it through, led Grace Robertson to creating a night to remember. I talk about the Gala Night or in correct terms the Red & White Winter Ball. To see our members dressed in their best attire in the company of their partners was a site to behold. It was indeed a splendid Gala.
The ambiance of the location and the superbly prepared food added to the evening of dance and fellowship. This year will be remembered as the first Gala Night, it will certainly be hard to improve . Well done Grace, a job well done.

"Halo" November 24th

"Halo" what a wonderful performance by Jennifer Pride as Casey. A strong voice and facial expressions to match the moment. It was indeed a play of emotions, some happy some sad. At the end I swear there were not a dry eye in the house, our own Allan Thain responsible with his fine portrayal of "Donald" a father torn with choices he rather not make.

My apologies for not sending you an email earlier but communications in Africa is not always easy. The telephone line at our accommodations has been down for over a week, and thus no email without trudging downtown Kakamega to an internet café where there may or may not be service.

"Polepole" is a word heard quite often in Kenya whether it is while walking along a trail or while urging a workman to get a special job done. "Polepole, Polepole" is Swahili for slowly, slowly and when the temperature is about 34C and the humidity is about 85% it is advice worth heeding.
