Kelly Rutherford, the Resource Teacher from Blacklock Fine Arts Elementary, visited our Club on April 19 to give us a better understanding of the modern classroom. Classrooms are now part of an inclusive education system in which students with special needs are fully participating members of a community of learners. Inclusion describes the principle that all students are entitled to equitable access to learning, achievement and the pursuit of excellence in all aspects of their educational programs.
This can be particularly challenging for teachers who must deal with a wide variety of student needs. Kelly showed us some of the innovative strategies they must use and answered many questions from our members. One of the biggest impediments right now is the process for students to be identified for additional support and funding. Our Dr. Shore and Dr. Pudlas added their expertise from their fields to add to the discussion that was quite lively. We thank Kelly for her visit and engaging presentation.
