Club Donates to Local Fire CompanyFire Chief Michael DiPierro was the guest speaker at the club's regular meeting on May 29, 2018. He gave the club details of upcoming events including the Fireworks scheduled for June 30 and the Annual Picnic and Parade scheduled for July 14. Both events are important to the company, annually raising a sizable portion of the fire company's operating funds. Volunteers are needed to work the concession stand, act as runners with food, etc. Club members are asked, if they wish to volunteer, to notify Eileen Talalas who will coordinate with the fire company. The club then presented Chief DiPierro with a check towards the Fire Company's fundraising efforts. The Rotary Club of Hamlin Lake Ariel is committed to serving the local and global community. Gazebo DonatedIf you have driven through Hamlin in recent weeks you may have noticed the addition of a Gazebo at the Hamlin Senior Center. The Gazebo is a donation from the Rotary Club of Hamlin - Lake Ariel. "Up until now, most of our fund raising benefited the youth in our community," said club president, Eileen Talalas. "Those projects included swings, bleachers and benches at Salem Park, the establishment of an annual Safe Kids Fair, and books for a summer reading program among others. This year, we approached the Hamlin Senior Center and asked if they had a 'wish list'. An outdoor seating area was the only request." Through club fundraising efforts and a grant from Rotary District 4710, funds were raised to fulfill the wish... and then some. The club's members gathered on Monday to apply a coat of stain to ensure protection of the wood. The club will also be providing bench seats so the seniors can relax and enjoy the lovely summer weather while being protected from the sun. A plaque was also mounted to the entrance announcing the donation by the club in memory of the club's charter president Dr E.J. "Jeff" Hathaway who passed earlier this year. "Jeff was the club's first president and instrumental in making sure that we all lived by the motto 'Service Above Self'. He was 90 years of age when he passed and until he became ill this past Autumn, he was very active in all club activities. It is fitting that we honor his memory in this way", said Talalas. Rotary is a worldwide organization that seeks to improve lives, locally and globally. Best known for its efforts to eradicate polio, the organization is also the only non-government organization with a permanent seat in the United Nations. Preventing Disease, Maternal and Child Heath, Improving Sanitation, Literacy and Education, and Conflict Resolution are the primary areas of focus. People interested in learning more are invited to attend a club meeting, held each Tuesday, 5:30 pm at RPlace in Hamlin. The club also seeks sponsors and golfers for their upcoming tournament which allows the club to continue its work. Information is available at NBT Bank, Century 21 in Hamlin, or Re/MAX Best in Lake Ariel.

Rotary Plants a ForestRotary seeks to improve the local and global community with a motto of Service Above Self. In keeping with Rotary International President Ian Riseley's challenge for every Rotarian to plant a tree, the clubs of District 7410 Cluster 3 joined forces to plant 150 trees at Lacawac Sanctuary. Meeting near the Big Lake Trail on a sunny spring morning, 39 Rotary, Interact, and Community Corps volunteers grabbed shovels and pickaxes to make short work of the project. The Lacawac Sanctuary is home to Lake Lacawac which is the southernmost unpolluted glacial lake. As such, it is an invaluable resource for research and education. The surrounding forests also provide a beautiful environment for outdoor enthusiasts with multiple trails, venues for special events including weddings, and an laboratory for teaching multitudes of school students how to be responsible stewards of the environment. Lacawac is dedicated to be a leading force and vibrant center for environmental education and research, resulting in awareness, appreciation, and preservation of the natural world. Members of the Hamlin-Lake Ariel, Hawley, Honesdale, Milford-Matamoras, and Newfoundland Clubs were joined by members of the Western Wayne and Wayne Highlands Interact Clubs. There were 6 varieties of trees planted including Flowering White Dogwood, Redbud, Wild Black Cherry, Shagbark Hickory, White Oak and Red Oak all of which are indigenous to the forest. The mission of Rotary is to provide service to others, promote integrity, and advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through its fellowship of business, professional, and community leaders. Anyone interested in learning more or joining Rotary is invited to visit www.Rotary.org or stop by a club's weekly meeting. |
Upcoming EventsThe Hamlin Lake Ariel Rotary has several speakers planned in the upcoming weeks as well as some service and fundraising projects. On March 20, we will welcome Betty Sullivan, a resident of the new senior housing apartments in Hamlin. Betty will tell us about the apartments and well as the criteria for leasing. On March 27, our own Joanne Firestone will be presenting information about water shortages and what is being done. Michelle Wolf from Victims Intervention is doing a talk about Human Trafficking on April 3. Yes, it is an issue right here in Wayne County! Don't forget to join us on April 10 when Tata Mbugua speaks about life in Kenya, and immigration issues. District Conference is being held from April 22 to 24 at Kalahari Resort. Members are urged to attend. Single day registrations are open for those who can't commit to multiple days. On April 28 we will be joining forces with the other clubs in our cluster- Newfoundland, Milford, Hawley and Honesdale, to complete the planting of Rotary Grove at Lacawac Sanctuary. Our Golf Tournament is planned for June 4 at Scranton Muni. Details will follow!

Celebrating 5 Years of ServiceOur Installation Dinner on July 18, 2012 was a celebration of service. Each of our past 5 presidents shared memories and accomplishments of their respective years. We thank Jeff Hathaway, Mary Ellen Richards Bentler, Harry V. Talalas, Terri Ditty and Terry Gunning for their leadership and service as Presidents. Our newly installed President Eileen Talalas is looking forward to carrying on their legacy and adding even more projects to serve our community. The club has accomplished many projects including the establishment of an on-going food drive to benefit the local pantry. Over the years we have purchased and installed benches, bleachers and swings at Salem Park. Annual Scholarships and leadership training for high school students have been put in place. Our 3rd Annual Safe Kids Fair is slated for September 16 at Evergreen School where children can get bike helmets, life jackets, and car seats if needed along with tons of other valuable safety information. In 2017, Evergreen School was gifted books for every student in support of the summer reading program. Lacawac Sanctuary has been a recipient of Rotary funds and manpower in restoring the Ice House. The club has made monetary donations to local EMS, Fire and Rescue companies and many other community organizations. In addition to the on-going projects mentioned, the new year brings 2 new goals- the establishment of a Rotary Grove with the planting of 150 trees in cooperation with the Hawley, Honesdale and Newfoundland Clubs, and the donation of a Gazebo to our local Senior Center. Meetings are held on Tuesday evenings at 5:30 pm at RPlace on 590, Hamlin PA. The public is welcome. An informational Wine and Cheese party is planned for October 10 for anyone seeking more information about Rotary and how to get involved.

Hamlin Rotary Club Supports Community ParkMembers of the Rotary Club of Hamlin joined with the Salem Township Supervisors to dedicate swings donated by the club to the Salem Community Park. The ribbon cutting ceremony was followed by a picnic and a refreshing of park benches the Rotary Club installed along the walking path several years ago. Purchase of the swings, benches and bleachers was made possible by ongoing fund raising events by the club and matched by The Rotary Foundation. Pictured are members of the Rotary Club and Salem Township Supervisors who provided the installation. |
Rotarian of the YearThe Rotary Club of Hamlin honored its “Rotarian of the Year” at its July 19 meeting in Lake Ariel. Tatiana Black of Hamlin was awarded a plaque and a commendation for her service to the club. Presenting the award was outgoing President Terri Ditty.
In making the presentation, Ms Ditty noted that in addition to serving as Club Secretary, Tatiana participated in every club event and fundraiser and exemplified the meaning of “Rotarian”. The club’s fundraising events over the 12 preceding months included 2 flea markets, Chili Cook-off, Comedy Night and the annual Golf Tournament. Those events funded Safe Kids Fair with car seat and bike helmet giveaways, Scholarship for a Western Wayne graduate, funding for a student to attend youth leadership training, and the induction of high school students into Interact, a Rotary youth division.
The mission of Rotary International is to provide service to others, promote integrity, and advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through its fellowship of business, professional and community leaders. The club meets at 5:30 pm on Tuesday evenings at Bongo’s Roadhouse on Route 191. Anyone interested in finding out more about Rotary is welcome to attend.

Comedy NightComedy show at Bennoco's Bar And Grill on January 17 was a tremendous success with more than 100 people attending. Four very talented young men including host Sam Evans nearly brought the house down. We owe Sam, Anthony Devito and Greg Stone a huge debt of gratitude. We can't thank members of our committee Dale Geyer, Tatiana Black, Terri Ditty and Laurie O'Connor enough for their hard work in putting this event together. Rotary's motto "Service Above Self" was truly demonstrated! |
