"Be the Inspiration" was the theme of this year's essay contest for the Rotary District 7410. We received 12 entries from the Western Wayne School District and on March 26th, the top 3 winners were invited to a social event our club hosted in their honor.

Every year, Rotary District 7410 offers an essay contest based on Rotary’s theme for that year. For 2018-2019 the theme was “Be the Inspiration.” Every club in the District can enter one winning entry from each high school associated with their club. For our club, the only high school in our area, Western Wayne, came through with 12 entries based on this theme. With no names attached, and a rubric to help with evaluating each essay based on the same aspects, 6 of our members, including me, gave a score to each essay. We all enjoyed the wide array of topics that each student wrote about, demonstrating how many different interpretations one can make of the work “inspiration.”

Once we chose our top 3 winners, who included Abby Burke (1st), Sydney Peet (2nd), and Brianna Burdick (3rd), we had them and their family members, along with one of the teachers who was involved in the contest, join us to recognize and celebrate the excellent writing that each student demonstrated with much thought. While everyone enjoyed some food and beverages, each student read her essay for all to hear. In addition, each winner received financial compensation and a certificate to honor her accomplishment.

The overall winners for this contest will be recognized and announced at the District Conference on Saturday, April 6th. With the success of this year’s contest, our club is already looking forward to reading next year’s entries!
