On World Polio Day, 24 October 2024, our Rotary club came together in solidarity with the global fight to #EndPolioNow.

At our regular meeting, we all dressed in red to show our support. Our president shared important facts about the ongoing efforts to eradicate polio, reminding us of the critical role Rotary plays in this mission. After the formal session, we enjoyed some fellowship and drinks, celebrating our shared commitment to making a polio-free world a reality. #WorldPolioDay #Rotary #EndPolio.

24 October is World Polio Day! Are You Ready?

As World Polio Day approaches, Rotary needs your help to amplify its message about eradicating polio to protect the world’s children from a devastating disease.

Rotary has made tremendous progress since the Global Polio Eradication Initiative was launched:

A 99.9% reduction in cases of illness caused by wild poliovirus
3 billion children immunized
125 countries where polio was endemic reduced to two — Afghanistan and Pakistan — with the virus contained in just a few districts and provinces

But even just one case still represents one child’s life forever changed by polio.

That’s why Rotary members must remain tenacious and keep our promise: We won’t stop until we know that no child will ever again experience the paralyzing effects of polio.

Let’s use World Polio Day to advocate for the support we need to make history by eradicating polio. Together, we end polio!

Leerkrachten Mulo EBG volgen wiskundetraining

Leerkrachten van de acht MULO-scholen van de Evangelische Broeder Gemeente (EBG) in Paramaribo zijn zaterdag gestart met een uitgebreide wiskundetraining. Ruim twintig leerkrachten van het EBG-onderwijs worden gedurende de komende maanden getraind in het verhogen van hun didactische vaardigheden in wiskunde, met als doel om de kwaliteit van hun lessen te verbeteren.

De training loopt van oktober 2024 tot en met april 2025 en bestaat uit zeven sessies. Elke sessie vindt plaats op een zaterdag, eenmaal per maand, van 08.30 uur tot 13.00 uur, in het Trainingscentrum van het EBG-onderwijs. Dit project is tot stand gekomen door een samenwerking tussen de Rotary Club of Paramaribo Residence en de Stichting EBG-onderwijs, met waardevolle ondersteuning van de Nederlandse Vereniging van Wiskundeleraren.

Een van de sterke punten van dit project is de bereidheid van de leerkrachten om actief te werken aan het verbeteren van hun wiskundedidactiek. Dit enthousiasme zal zeker bijdragen aan de succesvolle uitvoering van de trainingen.

De sessies worden verzorgd door gepensioneerd wiskundedocent en voormalig directeur van het Lyceum-2, Ewald Levens, die ook ervaring heeft als oud-docent op het Instituut voor de Opleiding van Leraren. Afgelopen jaar heeft hij al twintig leerkrachten van de RKBO MULO-scholen met succes getraind. Zijn ruime ervaring en passie voor onderwijs vormen een onschatbare waarde voor het succes van deze trainingsreeks. Hij wordt bijgestaan door collega Lindsy Klosteren, die ook een belangrijke rol speelt in het project.

19 October 2024: Team Building Fun with Interact Clubs of Suriname

In Suriname we have 3 Interact Clubs and this is the third year that they organized a joint teambuilding.

The buses left the city at 10 AM, filled with excitement, as members from three Interact Clubs headed to Lelydorp for an epic team-building activity.

The energy stayed high, and the fun continued despite the weather. As the day came to an end, it was clear that lasting memories had been made, along with new friendships.

Youth takes a very special part in our club program.

7th Stuka Prisirie session in Commewijne

October 19th, the Rotary Club of Paramaribo Residence, in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Paramaribo Quota successfully hosted the 7th Stuka Prisirie session in Commewijne.

The event focused on the important theme of Mental Health, with two psychologists presenting in a fun and educational way to both the Stuka kids and their parents, who were invited to participate for the first time.

The program also included a lively kids Zumba session, which was met with great enthusiasm. The Stuka Prisirie committee looks back on this edition as an enormous success!"

• We’ve identified 18 community projects, with the majority set to kick off in Q4.

• We’ve submitted one district grant for approval and are focused on growing our membership by two this year.

July is celebrated as Maternal and Child Health Month by Rotary International, a time to spotlight the critical importance of maternal and child health worldwide.
Our club had the honor of hosting Dr. Lachmi Kodan, an expert in maternal and perinatal health, who shared insightful information about the state of these vital health services in Suriname.

Maternal and Child Health Month serves as a reminder of the ongoing need to improve healthcare services for mothers and children worldwide. Dr. Kodan's enlightening presentation on the state of maternal and perinatal health in Suriname highlights the challenges and opportunities in this field. As Rotarians, we are inspired to continue our efforts in promoting maternal and child health, ensuring that every mother and child has access to the care they need to thrive.

Let us all take action this month and beyond to make a lasting impact on maternal and child health in our communities.

The meeting was named La Noche de Ana because the board surprised the fellows with the best Roti duck. The fellowship time with some wine and even gin and tonics was a very pleasant conclusion of the meeting.

This session was all about hygiene.

Reken project te Commewijne

The Rotary Club of Paramaribo Residence has launched an ambitious math project in Commewijne. Eighteen primary school teachers from Commewijne are receiving training from retired math teacher Ewald Levens.

Supported by the Ministry of Education, Science, and Culture and backed by Assuria Verzekeringen, this project aims to enhance teachers' didactic skills to improve math education in their schools.

This training, previously conducted in Coronie and Paramaribo, aims to advance the educational development of children in Commewijne.

The Rotary Club of Paramaribo Residence supports this initiative as part of Rotary International's focus on Basic Education and Literacy.

Slimmer Zwanger Suriname Project

July is Mother and Child Health Month!

This is why the stakeholders of the Slimmer Zwanger Project launched our mobile phone coaching app.

This program is promoting a healthy lifestyle for women and their partners before and during pregnancy such as increased intake of vegetables, fruits, and folic acid, and quitting smoking and alcohol.

Good preparation before pregnancy contributes to the health of both mother and child during pregnancy and beyond.

The program is easy to follow on a mobile phone, offering advice on healthy eating, exercise, and living.

The development of Slimmer Zwanger Suriname was funded by Rotary Club Leiden and four other Rotary clubs from Belgium, France, Germany, and England. Rotary Club Paramaribo Residence contributed financially and supports promoting the program.

This program totally fits in the mother and child area of focus of Rotary International

COP project - Knowledge Sharing in Nickerie

We are pleased to witness that the first group of teachers who have been trained in raising awareness on Childhood Obesity Prevention at schools, have shared their knowledge with another school.

Last year the Rotary Club of Paramaribo Residence trained around 20 teachers from Imeao-1 vocational school, among others, in Paramaribo, Suriname.

With the additional support of the Rotary Club of Maumee, Ohio, USA, they have visited IMEAO in the district of Nickerie to share their knowledge with teachers and students.

Obesity continues to be a major risk factor for chronic diseases and death in Suriname.

With initiatives such as these, we aim to prevent and reduce the number of people with obesity.

As members of Rotary Club of Paramaribo Residence we were privileged to embark on a firsthand exploration of this modern facility, including its impressive helipad.

Located on the outskirts of Paramarino, the EAG Airport stands as a testament to the city's commitment to progress and connectivity.

From the spacious terminal building to the state-of-the-art control tower, every aspect of the facility exuded a sense of modernity and functionality.

The helipad offered panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, including lush greenery.

As wa saw a helicopter landinh over our head, we couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the seamless integration of technology and nature.

During our tour, we had the opportunity to speak with airport staff who shared insights into the EAG Airport's role in promoting economic growth and tourism in the region. With its strategic location and world-class facilities, the airport is poised to become a key hub for the Guyanas

As members of the Rotary Club, we recognize the importance of community engagement and collaboration. We are excited to see how the EAG Airport will serve as a catalyst for development in Paramarino, creating jobs and fostering partnerships that benefit the entire community.

RCPR and Mathematics Education

The Rotary Club Paramaribo Residence's (RCPR) came with the initiative to support mathematics education and enhance the skills of Secondary School mathematics teachers.

This project, startThe project specifically targets RKBO MULO teachers, aiming to strengthen their teaching capabilities and subsequently impact students' learning experiences.

This project started on October 21, 2023, to periodically organize training sessions for these mathematics teachers and ended this month.

It was a festive meeting where the teachers got there certificate and .Ewald Levens the project chair gave an overview of this project.

Rotary District 7030 Annual Conference this year in ST.Vincent & the Grenadines!

The conference encompassing multiple countries in the Caribbean region, hosts its annual District Conference to bring together Rotarians from diverse backgrounds and locations. This conference serves as a platform for members to connect, exchange ideas, celebrate achievements, and strategize for future endeavors in service and community impact. Bloementuin school Gym by Rotary clubs of Suriname.

Completion of the Bloementuin school Gym by Rotary clubs of Suriname.

On Wednesday, March 27, 2024, the gym of the Bloementuin was completed by the 4 Rotary clubs in Suriname. This joint project was carried out by Rotary Club of Paramaribo, Rotary Club of Paramaribo Central, Rotary Club of Paramaribo Residence and Rotary Club of Paramaribo Quota.

The proceeds from the Rotary Corporate Challenge* 2023 were used to renovate the gymnasium of the Flower Garden. The Bloementuin is a school for Special Education and falls outside the financing program of the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture. The renovation consisted of: renewing the wooden floor of the gymnasium, including renewing the doors, installing LED lighting, renewing the electrical facilities and painting the gymnasium. The gutters of the school building have also been replaced, including the rainwater drainage pipes.

With the above-mentioned renovation, the school will be able to provide gym lessons again. The schools in the immediate area are also enabled to take gym lessons (approximately 700 students).

In the afternoons, the school can rent out the gymnasium to third parties (including youth volleyball) and thus generate income to be partially self-sufficient.

*Rotary Corporate Challenge is an annual corporate sports event where the 4 Rotary Clubs in Suriname fundraise for a good cause.

SELF HEALING WORKSHOP

Mental health is one of Rotary's main focuses this year.

The "SELF HEALING WORKSHOP" held on Saturday, March 16th, was a great success. This unique Yoga fundraiser, based on the methodologies of Asana Pranayama Yoga, emphasizing the connection between the mind, body, and energy, was new to many.

Led by internationally renowned Yoga teacher Ron van der Post and his expert team of guides, participants enjoyed a challenging and harmonious workshop, sharing practical and theoretical information in a serene yet lighthearted manner.

The dynamic team of the RCPR Fundraising committee ensured participants were provided not only with mental nourishment but also ample water and fruit during breaks, along with a healthy warm meal.

The aim was to raise awareness about the strain on the human body and the decline in well-being due to the inability to manage the high pressure of daily life at home, school, in relationships, and in the workplace. It was an eye-opener for many, motivating them to prioritize a healthier approach to their daily responsibilities after the workshop.

Thanks to Ron van der Post, the guides, the large number of participants, sponsors, and donors, without whom this unique event would not have been successful.

At our recent meeting, we had the privilege of diving deep into the important topics of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), thanks to the outstanding efforts of PDG Elwin and his dedicated team. The session was not only informative but also engaging, leaving a lasting impact on all who attended.

Kicking off the session, we were treated to a brief yet insightful introduction from Elviera, shedding light on the significance of DEI in our communities and organizations.

Steps for Peace' brings the community together during World Rotary Day

'Steps for Peace' brings the community together during World Rotary Day

On Friday evening, February 23, 2024, hundreds of participants came together for 'Steps for Peace', an inspiring 4 km run organized by the Rotary Club of Paramaribo Residence, Rotaract Club of F.R.E.S.H. and Interact Club of Brick by Brick.

The event brought together hundreds of people in the interests of peace, hope, community and health. The founding of the first Rotary club in 1905 is celebrated every year on February 23.

One of Rotary's goals is to promote peace around the world.

The evening started with a walk-in at Choi's Supermarket North, where participants gathered and participated in the warm-up. In a sign of their commitment to peace, many wore white clothing and held glow sticks to illuminate the night with a sparkling symbol of hope. Students from schools and communities in the North were also present, as well as colleagues from various companies.

At 7:00 PM the start of the run signaled for participants to begin the run towards a more peaceful world. The walkers completed the 4 km route in a peaceful atmosphere, with every step contributing to a greater sense of peace, unity and health.

Rotary is committed to promoting peace. Proceeds from “Steps for Peace” will benefit the Rotary District 7030 Peace Building Program, which focuses on fostering and promoting peace in our region. The organizing clubs strongly support these important efforts and are grateful for the support of all participants in the event.

Rotary not only supports peace initiatives, but is also committed to preventing childhood obesity and raising awareness about the importance of healthy eating and sufficient exercise. Each walk emphasizes the importance of exercise for a healthy society and serves as an example for youth.

The success of 'Steps for Peace' is a reflection of the power of peace, unity and health. The Rotary Club of Paramaribo Residence, Rotaract Club of F.R.E.S.H. and Interact Club of Brick by Brick thank all participants and supporters for their contribution to this special evening. Eco Friendly Challenge

Rotary Suriname's Eco Friendly Challenge is part of the Greener Together Project, a joint effort of all 4 Rotary Clubs in Suriname.

On february 12th 2024, after a project duration of 15 months, we had the presentations of the EcoFriendlyChallenge, in which 6 of the 15 schools participated and creatively drew attention to waste reduction and proper waste management.

A Jury consisting of Rtn.Nancy Del Pardo, Rtn.Jean Luc van Charante, and Humphrey Berggraaf evaluated the submissions of the 6 schools on 8 elements: (1) degree of elaboration, portrayal or implementation, (2) community involvement near the school, (3) visibility and measurability of results, (4) suitability for awareness program, (5) use of social media, (6) educational value, (7) innovation, and (8) scalability.

2 schools were chosen as winners, namely Imeao-1 and Havo 3, each receiving a monetary prize of USD 1,550.

The project will be evaluated in February with all stakeholders, and preparations will be made to initiate a follow-up process involving the neighborhoods of the winning schools to expand the project's reach and further improve our ecological footprint.

The kickoff for the implementation of the Greener Together project was given on November 3, 2022. A Memorandum of Understanding was signed with the Ministry of Spatial Planning and Environment, the Ministry of Education, Science, and Culture, and the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Entrepreneurship, and Technological Innovation.

The aim of the Greener Together Project is to actively contribute to improving Suriname's ecological footprint by reducing and/or replacing Single Use Plastics, and proper waste management as well as removal of plastic, aluminum, and paper waste in a public-private partnership with the government.

In this partnership, 15 schools and the 3 mentioned ministries are involved, with project funding provided by 12 companies, namely:

5. Fernandes Bottling

6. Apache Suriname

Waste collection bins have been placed at all 12 companies, 15 schools, and 3 Ministries, and awareness and training sessions have been provided by the Suriname Waste Management Foundation (Suwama), with waste collection and processing carried out by Amreco and Green Circle Recyclers. As part of the project, waste management plans were also developed and implemented at the schools to ensure the sustainable continuation of the project. Additionally, water coolers and bottles were provided to the schools to reduce the use of plastic bottles and encourage drinking water at school.

The kids were very happy with their chairs and tables and other school stuff .

Thanks to the generous donation from STG Vrienden van Suriname , the club received a container filled with various items aimed at making a positive impact on the lives of those in need.

This community project is a testament to the power of collaboration and the impact that can be achieved when organizations come together for a common cause.

Het Childhood Obesity Prevention Program (COPP)

Obesitas bij de Surinaamse jeugd heeft een alarmerend niveau bereikt, wat de fysieke en mentale gezondheid van onze kinderen aantast. Het is van belang dat we beslissende actie ondernemen om al vroeg in ons leven gezonde gewoonten aan te leren.

De Rotary Club of Paramaribo Residence heeft via het Childhood Obesity Prevention Program (COPP) het ministerie van Onderwijs, Wetenschap en Cultuur ondersteund door een trainingsprogramma te ontwikkelen en te verzorgen op 5 scholen in Suriname.

Het programma, gebaseerd op het Basic Life Skills principe, richt zich op de verschillende componenten van obesitas preventie op school, nl.:

- Bewustwording van obesitas en gevolgen;

- Bevorderen van gezonder eten, en meer water drinken en minder gesuikerde dranken;

- Bevorderen van beweging op school.

Om dit programma een duurzaam karakter te geven, hebben wij de syllabus die tijdens deze training is ontwikkeld, aan het Ministerie overhandigd zodat de vaardigheden door docenten kunnen worden toegepast in het curriculum. Hiermee kunnen de leerlingen praktische kennis krijgen over het maken van gezonde voedingskeuzes, het begrijpen van het belang van regelmatige lichaamsbeweging en het ontwikkelen van strategieën om een positieve geestelijke gezondheid te behouden. Door deze essentiële levensvaardigheden in het onderwijssysteem op te nemen, stellen we onze kinderen in staat gezonder te leven en kunnen we de prevalentie van obesitas bij kinderen terugdringen.

Rotary Clubs Unite to Renovate Special School's Sports Hall: Bloementuin Project Blooms!

The four Rotary Clubs of Suriname - Rotary Club of Paramaribo Residence Rotary Club of Paramaribo Quota Rotary Club of Paramaribo Central Rotary Club of Paramaribo are proud to announce the Bloementuin Project, a collaborative effort to renovate the sports hall at a special school for children with learning difficulties.

This initiative bloomed thanks to the resounding success of the April 2023 Corporate Challenge Event, where 12 companies competed in friendly challenges, raising funds specifically for this project.

The sports hall at the special school serves as a vital space for physical activity, recreation, and social interaction for the students. However, the facility was in dire need of renovation to create a safe, stimulating, and inclusive environment.

Through the Bloementuin Project, the Rotary Clubs aim to:

Upgrade the sports hall with new paint, flooring, equipment, and accessibility features.

Promote physical activity and well-being for children with learning difficulties.

Foster social inclusion by creating a welcoming space for all students.

The Rotary Clubs of Suriname believe that every child deserves equal opportunities to thrive, and the Bloementuin Project embodies this commitment. The renovated sports hall will not only enhance the physical environment but also contribute to the social, emotional, and cognitive development of the students.

We are pleased to share highlights of the DG visit to Commewijne, a place which is rich in cultural and historical places.

The visit started with a tour of Fort Nieuw Amsterdam, a colonial-era fortification that stands as a testament to Suriname's intricate past. The DG was immersed in the historical significance of the fort, gaining a deep understanding of its role in safeguarding the colony during various periods.

Following the fort tour we proceeded to Plantage Wederzorg, a former coffee plantation that provides a glimpse into the region's agricultural heritage.

After the tour we took a moment to savor the culinary delights of Berkat, a special meal showcased the diverse and flavorful cuisine of Suriname, providing an opportunity for informal discussions in a relaxed setting.

Promoting Mathematics Education

Mathematics plays an indispensable role in various scientific disciplines such as physics, chemistry, computer science, economics, and biology. It emphasizes the continuous interplay between mathematics and these fields, highlighting the significance of mathematics as a foundational subject. Additionally, the importance of statistics in the social sciences is acknowledged. The Rotary Club Paramaribo Residence's (RCPR) came with the initiative to support mathematics education and enhance the skills of Secondary School mathematics teachers.

This project, started on October 21, 2023, to periodically organize training sessions for these mathematics teachers. The primary objective is to cultivate a higher level of mathematics proficiency, beginning with cultivating an interest in mathematics among students. The project specifically targets RKBO MULO teachers, aiming to strengthen their teaching capabilities and subsequently impact students' learning experiences. Subsequent training sessions occurred on November 18 and December 16, 2023, with the most recent training held on January 20, 2024. Three more sessions are scheduled, leading to a conclusion in April 2024.

Wiskunde is onmisbaar in elke wetenschap. Er is een voortdurende wisselwerking tussen wiskunde en o.a. natuurkunde, scheikunde, informatica, economie en biologie. Statistiek is een onderdeel van de wiskunde, dat in de sociale wetenschappen niet weg te denken is. Om op een hoger wiskunde niveau te komen moeten we investeren in de toekomst. Dat begint bij de basis: scholieren interesseren voor wiskunde.

De Rotary Club Paramaribo Residence ( RCPR ) wil helpen dit doel bereiken door het periodiek organiseren van trainingen voor MULO- wiskunde- leerkrachten. Dit project is gestart op 21 oktober 2023 en wel voor de RKBO MULO - leerkrachten. Vervolgens zijn er trainingen verzorgd op 18 nov en 16 december 2023. De vierde training heeft onlangs op zaterdag 20 januari 2024 plaats gevonden. Er staan nog drie trainingen op het programma. De afsluiting is in april 2024.

The RCPR Bike Ride

In the spirit of fostering fellowship and community engagement, the Rotary Club Paramaribo Residence recently organized a bike ride that not only promoted healthy living but also brought together Rotarians, their families, and partners..

Last Saturday the Club Administration Committee orchestrated a scenic bike ride, taking participants on a journey from Frederiksdorp to Rust en Werk in Commewijne.

The day began with a boat ride from Leonsberg to Frederiksdorp, where the wheels met the road for the cycling expedition.

The route from Frederiksdorp to Rust en Werk in Commewijne provided a perfect blend of lush landscapes and historical sites.

Families and partners of Rotarians, along with enthusiastic kids, added an extra layer of joy to the event.

After a lunch at Frederiksdorp there was some time for fellowship.

International Day of Peace (IDP)

Each year the International Day of Peace (IDP) is observed around the world on 21 September. The UN General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, through observing 24 hours of non-violence and cease-fire. Never has our world needed peace more.

This year’s theme is Actions for Peace: Our Ambition for the #GlobalGoals. It is a call to action that recognizes our individual and collective responsibility to foster peace. Fostering peace contributes to the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals will create a culture of peace for all.

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres said, "Peace is needed today more than ever. War and conflict are unleashing devastation, poverty, and hunger, and driving tens of millions of people from their homes. Climate chaos is all around. And even peaceful countries are gripped by gaping inequalities and political polarization."

On Saturday, September 2nd, the Rotary Club of Paramaribo Residence (RCPR) sprang into action in light of International Literacy Day, which is celebrated annually on September 8th. Members of the club distributed youth, education, and literature books in Nickerie, emphasizing the essential nature of reading and writing in today's society. Through this effort, the club hopes to offer everyone equal educational opportunities.

"Literacy goes beyond just being able to read and write. It's a tool for personal growth, critical thinking, and societal progress," notes Suraya Nanan, the current Community Service chair of the club. A special word of thanks goes out to the District Commissioner of Nickerie, Mrs. S. Gobardhan, and the Chairperson of Stg. Sari, Mrs. K. Bajnath. Thanks to their support and effort, this activity could take place at an appropriate location, accommodated in a tent. With this book donation, RCPR aims to contribute to a more literate, informed, and closely-knit Nickerie.

Op 31 augustus 2023 hadden wij een interessante spreker bij ons in de club Dhr.Karel Eckhorst die ons een update heeft gegeven over het IMF .

Karel Eckhorst is an Advisor to the Brazilian Executive Directors in the Executive Boards of the International Monetary Fund (IMF; first from 2012 – 2013, 2016 – 2018, 2022 – present) and the World Bank Group (WBG; 2018 – 2022, Washington, D.C.).

Na de lezing was er tijd voor onze RCPR Borrel with a lot of fun , food and fellowship.

Thursday, August 17, 2023 we had a visit from Mrs. Serena Essed.

She gave a very interesting lecture to our club about changing the electoral system.

Greener Together Project

The Greener Together Project, a joint Environmental initiative of all four Rotary Clubs in Suriname, organized a teambuilding on August 18, with participation of all 12 companies, 15 schools and 3 Ministries.

One of the teambuilding exercises was to perform a screen play and the team with the best play was selected as the winner by a Jury consisting of Nancy Del Prado, Manoj Parsan, Els Dams, Diana Halfhide (all board members of the 4 Rotary Clubs), and AG Steven Tjin A Djie.

President Els Dams of the Rotary Club of Paramaribo Residence had the honour to announce the winning team, and Rotarian Alex van Petten handed over gift vouchers to the winning team.

Rotarian Alex also announced the launch of the Rotary Eco Friendly Challenge - and urged the schools to participate. With this program the schools are invited to submit a proposal to reduce single used plastic. Final submission date is November.

The best proposal will be selected by a Jury of experts and will be announced in December.

childhood obesity prevention program

As part of its childhood obesity prevention program, the Rotary Club of Paramaribo Residence contributed to train a number of teachers from the VOJ( high school) and VOS (secondary school) to incorporate the factors of healthy eating and exercise into their lesson plan.

The training was based on the Basic Life Skills principle of the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture.

Recently, 54 teachers of HAVO2, VWO4, Nassy Brouwerschool and STS4 received their certificates.

Together with the 23 teachers of the IMEAO1, these teachers can transfer the training to colleagues.

Assembly on the 3th of August

Every new start of a rotary year requires a review of our club bylaws and more.

That is why we organized a club assembly on the 3th of August!

Mangrove trees at Weg naar Zee

To protect our coastal areas we planted mangrove trees at Weg naar Zee.

This project we did together with our youth clubs Rotaract Club of FRESH and Interact Club Brick by Brick .

The morning started with a presentation about the different kinds of mangrove trees we have in Suriname and what their function is , presented by Green Heritage Fund Suriname .

After the presentation we went to weg naar zee.

Part 1 of the day was to help in the nursery to plant small mangrove trees.

Part 2 the big mangrove trees were planted in the coastal area.

It was a day with lots of fun food and fellowship and bonding with the youth!

I-Syi Empowering Girls

Rotary Club of Paramaribo Residence kicked off Phase2 of the I-Syi Empowering Girls project on August 25, 2023.

President Els Dams signed a cooperation agreement with Eurnice Amatodja the Director of Unnieq’s Fashion and Sewing School located at Meerzorg in the District of Commewijne.

Phase 1 which was focussed on sewing environmentally friendly cotton bags was concluded in July. Phase 2 will focus on sewing environmentally friendly reusable cotton sanitary pads. At least 20 female participants will be trained and coached in producing 2,000 sanitary pads.

The pads will be introduced for use by underprivileged girls and aid in relieving period poverty.

The women participating in the project will also be trained to continue producing the pads as small entrepreneur.

July is Maternal and Child Health Month

In our meeting of July 13th, Dr.Wilco Zijlmans held a great presentation in our club regarding Maternal and Child Health. He did a lot of research and presented the outcome.

As Rotary Club of Paramaribo Residence , we believe that ensuring the well-being of expectant mothers and the health of their children is a collective responsibility.

To achieve this goal, we are joining forces with the Foundation for Perinatal Interventions and Research in Suriname, Perisur, to launch an awareness campaign and an 18-month project.

Through these efforts, we aim to educate young women and men about the significance of preconception care and guide them on how to maintain a healthy pregnancy.

Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) is an intensive leadership experience organized by Rotary clubs and districts where you develop your skills as a leader while having fun and making connections.

RYLA was founded in 1971.

In District 7030 we have our District RYLA and in Suriname we have our own RYLA organised by all four Rotary Clubs in Suriname with help of the Rotaract Clubs in Suriname.

Corporate Challenge 2023

De Rotaryclubs van Suriname organiseerden op zaterdag 1 april 2023 voor het eerst een bedrijvendag waarbij teambuilding, saamhorigheid, sport en spel centraal staan.

Het is de bedoeling dat de participerende bedrijven tegen elkaar uitkomen bij de diverse spelen. De ervaring met soortgelijke projecten leert dat dergelijke spelen een beroep doen op samenwerking, behendigheid, intelligentie, inzicht en empathie. Leiderschap en goede communicatie staan hierbij centraal. Voor de deelnemende bedrijven waardevol omdat medewerkers de hele dag bezig zijn om strategieën uit te stippelen om het winnend team te worden: teambuilding. Tevens zijn de mensen in beweging, wat een positive invloed heeft op de gezondheid.

De opbrengst van deze dag komt namelijk ten goede aan een school die vroeger door een serviceclub is opgericht. Dat is de school De Bloementuin aan de Achtersteeg. Dit is een MLK-school van het speciaal

onderwijs waar moeilijk lerende kinderen onderwijs ontvangen. De gymzaal is in deplorabele staat en is dringend aan renovatie toe, terwijl deze kinderen juist veel behoefte hebben aan sport en spel.

De bedrijven die meedoen, kunnen dus het verschil maken.

Vocational visits are part of our Rotary year program.

Yesterday we brought a visit to the Baitali Group of Companies .

After a warm welcome from the management of the company we had a tour on the site plan. After a few presentations we had some fellow and friendship time.

“Stuka Prisiri” project

In the context of broad support for the “Stuka Prisiri” project, 22 teachers from the 4 primary schools in Coronie, have been trained. The training focused on increasing the math skills of the teacher.

This training was held in Totness on Saturday March 18th. and was under the direction of fellow Ewald. In this he was supported by the teachers Ellen, Lucille, Urrella and Irene, all members of the RKBO-Rekenwerkgroep and the fellows Reina and Hortence

The start was exactly at 10.00 am. The teachers were addressed by Agnes , president of the RCPR.

This successful training was concluded at 2.00 pm by the completion of the evaluation form by each participant. Everyone received a Math handout to take home.

At the end, each participant received a packed lunch.

This training has been successful thanks to the excellent coordination of fellow Ineke and crew.

Fellows have also supported this great project externally.

In het kader van een brede ondersteuning aan het project “ Stuka Prisiri “ zijn 22 leerkrachten van de 4 GLO - scholen voornamelijk van de bovenbouw in Coronie getraind. De training ging om het verhogen van rekendidactische vaardigheden van de leerkracht.

Deze training werd gehouden in Totness en wel op zaterdag 18 maart j.l. en was onder leiding van fellow Ewald. In deze werd hij ondersteund door de leekrachten Ellen, Lucille, Urrella en Irene allen lid van de RKBO- Rekenwerkgroep en de fellows Reina en Hortence

De start was precies op 10.00u . De leerkrachten werden door Agnes , president van de RCPR toegesproken.

Deze succesvolle training werd om 14.00u afgesloten middels het invullen van het evaluatieformulier door elke deelnemer. Een ieder kreeg een Reken handout mee naar huis.

Ter afsluiting kreeg elke deelnemer een lunchpakket.

Deze training is succesvol geweest dankzij de voortreffelijke coordinatie van fellow Ineke en crew.

Extern hebben fellows dit mooie project ook ondersteund.

4 maart world obesity day

March 4 is World Obesity Day and we organised a school tournament.

ISYI in Moengo

I-SYI broadens reach to district Coronie and Marowijne.

I-Syi means DID YOU SEE in Surinamese Language.

One of the objectives of the I-Syi Empowering Girls Project is to broaden the reach of the project; started in Paramaribo in October last year, the project team has now reached out to participants in two other districts: Coronie and Marowijne.

In the weekend of 18-19 March 2023, the I-Syi project team launched the project in:

1. Totness, the capital of the District Coronie, 122 km west from Paramaribo, and

2. Moengo, the capital of the District Marowijne, 108 km east from Paramaribo

18 girls and young women received the basic training to sew the re-usable shopper bag and all are very enthusiastic to continue learning and when ready, participate in the production stream of I-Syi bags.

With this roll-out the minimum target of 45 participants has now been reached. In Paramaribo a total of 27 girls have been trained and as per end of March will have produced more than 1,000 bags.

We are very proud to mention that one of the participants (from Moengo) who started with the cohort in Paramaribo, has been trained and is now ready to coordinate the group of participants in Moengo.

The next step in the project is to identify those participants who are ready to continue with the production from their home-base enabling them to produce more and in doing so, gradually prepare them for being their own entrepreneur, with support from the I-Syi trainer now from a distance.

Simultaneously preparations for the next phase of the project are being initiated, which is the training and production of the re-usable cotton sanitary pads, which is planned to start in May 2023.

The I-Syi team and participants are highly motivated to reach the next milestones.

Op dinsdag 7 februari 2023 vond tijdens een joint meeting de plechtige ceremonie van de Vocational Excelence Award (VEA) 2023 plaats. De laureaat is dhr. Henk van Vliet. Zijn nominatie is unaniem bekrachtigd na voordracht van de VEA commissie door alle presidenten van de vier Rotary Clubs die Suriname rijk is. Agreement between the Rotary Club of Paramaribo Residence and the A.L. Waaldijkcollege for the execution of the I-Syi Girls Empowerment Project

On September 21st the formal signing took place of the agreement between the Rotary Club of Paramaribo Residence and the A.L. Waaldijkcollege for the execution of the I-Syi Girls Empowerment Project.

I-Syi means ‘Did you see’ in the Surinamese language

At least 45 girls wiil be trained to use a sewing machine and to manufacture environmental-friendly and reusable cotton bags (and in a later stage other items) with cultural print and the I-Syi brand name.

The agreement was signed by the President of RCPR, Agnes Moensi-Sokowikromo and by the Chair of the Board of the A.L.Waaldijkcollege, Denise Kort.

The Waaldijkcollege is a domestic school incorporated as a Foundation and provides vocational - junior high level - sewing & fashion creation education and more.

International Day of Peace - 21 Sept 2022

21st september 2022.

International Day of Peace and the UN theme for this year was "End Racism Build Peace".

After receiving the invitation from the district peace committee, we decided to join this online Zoom meeting with the whole club.

We resceduled our regular meeting to a Zoom Peace meeting and enjoyed District Governor Leslie and the other speakers of this Peace event.

The topics discussed on the day include:

1) Becoming a Peacebuilder Club and Opportunities for Building Peace through the Rotary Action Group for Peace - Alison Sutherland.

2) Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Based on RI Philosophy and Statements and the Role of DEI in Becoming a More Peace-Filled Rotarian - Dr. Vicki Radel.

Stuka Prisiri Goes to Staatsolie On Saturday August 13

On Saturday August 13, the Stuka Prisiri kids visited the Staatsolie Refinery in Tout Lui Faut.

They departed at 8 am with 2 Staatsolie buses from Totness and arrived at the Refinery complex at 11:30 am.

Our President Agnes welcomed the kids on behalf of Staatsolie and Mr Refos and Mr Persaud were introduced. They organized the educational day on behalf of Staatsolie.

The morning started with a film showing the safety regulations. The gentlemen then gave information in a PowerPoint presentation about the types of oil that were found and where, the processing and products. They involved the children with questions in the presentation. They explained this with demonstrations of drills present on the tables.

After this, the children, volunteers, and Rotarians present were given a bus tour of the Refinery.

They were told what was being done and the kids were allowed to ask questions.

It was a very educational day for the SP kids. At the end of the afternoon, they were treated to nassie goreng and surprised with a school bag with contents when they left. The volunteers also received a gift.

It was a very successful day, completely organized by Staatsolie, for which we thank you very much.

August is Membership month

On Wednesday August 17, Rotary Suriname had the first joint meeting of the year 2022/2023 in the Staatsolie Conference Room.

The Rotary Club of Paramaribo Residence led by President Agnes Moensi hosted this very successful meeting.

Upon entering, the guests were welcomed with a welcome drink.

After the walk-in, the official part of the evening started.

The guest speaker of the evening, Mr Roy Rijger, tax lawyer, managed to captivate the fellows present with his interesting presentation on the current topic, 'the introduction of VAT in Suriname'.

For the girls and women empowerment project (one of the focus areas) RCPR has introduced their “I-Syi” project. A 'catwalk' was held during which various models of I-Syi bags were shown.

This joint meeting was also the moment to introduce and get to know all the new fellows of the 4 Rotary clubs. New fellows from all 4 clubs were placed 'on the spot'.

This successful evening was musically framed by the tones of tabla and keyboard music and concluded with a raffle, a snack box, delicious drinks and of course sufficient fellowship.
