International Literacy DayOn International Literacy Day, September 8th, 2023, the club invites the community to reflect on the importance of being literate and the impact it has on individual lives and the wider society On Saturday, September 2nd, the Rotary Club of Paramaribo Residence (RCPR) sprang into action in light of International Literacy Day, which is celebrated annually on September 8th. Members of the club distributed youth, education, and literature books in Nickerie, emphasizing the essential nature of reading and writing in today's society. Through this effort, the club hopes to offer everyone equal educational opportunities. "Literacy goes beyond just being able to read and write. It's a tool for personal growth, critical thinking, and societal progress," notes Suraya Nanan, the current Community Service chair of the club. A special word of thanks goes out to the District Commissioner of Nickerie, Mrs. S. Gobardhan, and the Chairperson of Stg. Sari, Mrs. K. Bajnath. Thanks to their support and effort, this activity could take place at an appropriate location, accommodated in a tent. With this book donation, RCPR aims to contribute to a more literate, informed, and closely-knit Nickerie. |

Meeting 31 augustus 2023Op 31 augustus 2023 hadden wij een interessante spreker bij ons in de club Dhr.Karel Eckhorst die ons een update heeft gegeven over het IMF . Karel Eckhorst is an Advisor to the Brazilian Executive Directors in the Executive Boards of the International Monetary Fund (IMF; first from 2012 – 2013, 2016 – 2018, 2022 – present) and the World Bank Group (WBG; 2018 – 2022, Washington, D.C.). Na de lezing was er tijd voor onze RCPR Borrel with a lot of fun , food and fellowship. |

Greener Together ProjectThe Greener Together Project, a joint Environmental initiative of all four Rotary Clubs in Suriname, organized a teambuilding on August 18, with participation of all 12 companies, 15 schools and 3 Ministries. One of the teambuilding exercises was to perform a screen play and the team with the best play was selected as the winner by a Jury consisting of Nancy Del Prado, Manoj Parsan, Els Dams, Diana Halfhide (all board members of the 4 Rotary Clubs), and AG Steven Tjin A Djie. President Els Dams of the Rotary Club of Paramaribo Residence had the honour to announce the winning team, and Rotarian Alex van Petten handed over gift vouchers to the winning team. Rotarian Alex also announced the launch of the Rotary Eco Friendly Challenge - and urged the schools to participate. With this program the schools are invited to submit a proposal to reduce single used plastic. Final submission date is November. The best proposal will be selected by a Jury of experts and will be announced in December. |

childhood obesity prevention programAs part of its childhood obesity prevention program, the Rotary Club of Paramaribo Residence contributed to train a number of teachers from the VOJ( high school) and VOS (secondary school) to incorporate the factors of healthy eating and exercise into their lesson plan. The training was based on the Basic Life Skills principle of the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture. Recently, 54 teachers of HAVO2, VWO4, Nassy Brouwerschool and STS4 received their certificates. Together with the 23 teachers of the IMEAO1, these teachers can transfer the training to colleagues. Mangrove trees at Weg naar ZeeTo protect our coastal areas we planted mangrove trees at Weg naar Zee. This project we did together with our youth clubs Rotaract Club of FRESH and Interact Club Brick by Brick . The morning started with a presentation about the different kinds of mangrove trees we have in Suriname and what their function is , presented by Green Heritage Fund Suriname . After the presentation we went to weg naar zee. Part 1 of the day was to help in the nursery to plant small mangrove trees. Part 2 the big mangrove trees were planted in the coastal area. It was a day with lots of fun food and fellowship and bonding with the youth! |

I-Syi Empowering GirlsRotary Club of Paramaribo Residence kicked off Phase2 of the I-Syi Empowering Girls project on August 25, 2023. President Els Dams signed a cooperation agreement with Eurnice Amatodja the Director of Unnieq’s Fashion and Sewing School located at Meerzorg in the District of Commewijne. Phase 1 which was focussed on sewing environmentally friendly cotton bags was concluded in July. Phase 2 will focus on sewing environmentally friendly reusable cotton sanitary pads. At least 20 female participants will be trained and coached in producing 2,000 sanitary pads. The pads will be introduced for use by underprivileged girls and aid in relieving period poverty. The women participating in the project will also be trained to continue producing the pads as small entrepreneur. |

July is Maternal and Child Health Month In our meeting of July 13th, Dr.Wilco Zijlmans held a great presentation in our club regarding Maternal and Child Health. He did a lot of research and presented the outcome. As Rotary Club of Paramaribo Residence , we believe that ensuring the well-being of expectant mothers and the health of their children is a collective responsibility. To achieve this goal, we are joining forces with the Foundation for Perinatal Interventions and Research in Suriname, Perisur, to launch an awareness campaign and an 18-month project. Through these efforts, we aim to educate young women and men about the significance of preconception care and guide them on how to maintain a healthy pregnancy. |

Rotary Youth Leadership Awards 2023Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) is an intensive leadership experience organized by Rotary clubs and districts where you develop your skills as a leader while having fun and making connections. RYLA was founded in 1971. In District 7030 we have our District RYLA and in Suriname we have our own RYLA organised by all four Rotary Clubs in Suriname with help of the Rotaract Clubs in Suriname. The theme of RYLA in 2023 is SELF LEADERSHIP.     |

Corporate Challenge 2023De Rotaryclubs van Suriname organiseerden op zaterdag 1 april 2023 voor het eerst een bedrijvendag waarbij teambuilding, saamhorigheid, sport en spel centraal staan. Het is de bedoeling dat de participerende bedrijven tegen elkaar uitkomen bij de diverse spelen. De ervaring met soortgelijke projecten leert dat dergelijke spelen een beroep doen op samenwerking, behendigheid, intelligentie, inzicht en empathie. Leiderschap en goede communicatie staan hierbij centraal. Voor de deelnemende bedrijven waardevol omdat medewerkers de hele dag bezig zijn om strategieën uit te stippelen om het winnend team te worden: teambuilding. Tevens zijn de mensen in beweging, wat een positive invloed heeft op de gezondheid. De opbrengst van deze dag komt namelijk ten goede aan een school die vroeger door een serviceclub is opgericht. Dat is de school De Bloementuin aan de Achtersteeg. Dit is een MLK-school van het speciaal onderwijs waar moeilijk lerende kinderen onderwijs ontvangen. De gymzaal is in deplorabele staat en is dringend aan renovatie toe, terwijl deze kinderen juist veel behoefte hebben aan sport en spel. De bedrijven die meedoen, kunnen dus het verschil maken.  |

Rotary Suriname Runs for Charity 2023Op 23 maart 2023 heeft de overhandiging van de opbrengst van de Rotary Suriname Runs for Charity 2023 plaatsgevonden aan de goede doelen.  De Neonatale Intensive Care Unit (NICU)De Stichting DierenbeschermingDe Nationale Stichting voor Blinden en Slechtzienden (NSBS)hebben elk een bedrag van USD 4,400 in ontvangst mogen nemen. Nogmaals dank aan een ieder die een bijdrage heeft geleverd. Editie 2023 is nu officieel afgerond en we kijken al uit naar de volgende editie.  |

“Stuka Prisiri” projectIn the context of broad support for the “Stuka Prisiri” project, 22 teachers from the 4 primary schools in Coronie, have been trained. The training focused on increasing the math skills of the teacher. This training was held in Totness on Saturday March 18th. and was under the direction of fellow Ewald. In this he was supported by the teachers Ellen, Lucille, Urrella and Irene, all members of the RKBO-Rekenwerkgroep and the fellows Reina and Hortence The start was exactly at 10.00 am. The teachers were addressed by Agnes , president of the RCPR. This successful training was concluded at 2.00 pm by the completion of the evaluation form by each participant. Everyone received a Math handout to take home. At the end, each participant received a packed lunch. This training has been successful thanks to the excellent coordination of fellow Ineke and crew. Fellows have also supported this great project externally. I hereby thank fellows Malini, Oscar and Steven for their contribution In het kader van een brede ondersteuning aan het project “ Stuka Prisiri “ zijn 22 leerkrachten van de 4 GLO - scholen voornamelijk van de bovenbouw in Coronie getraind. De training ging om het verhogen van rekendidactische vaardigheden van de leerkracht. Deze training werd gehouden in Totness en wel op zaterdag 18 maart j.l. en was onder leiding van fellow Ewald. In deze werd hij ondersteund door de leekrachten Ellen, Lucille, Urrella en Irene allen lid van de RKBO- Rekenwerkgroep en de fellows Reina en Hortence De start was precies op 10.00u . De leerkrachten werden door Agnes , president van de RCPR toegesproken. Deze succesvolle training werd om 14.00u afgesloten middels het invullen van het evaluatieformulier door elke deelnemer. Een ieder kreeg een Reken handout mee naar huis. Ter afsluiting kreeg elke deelnemer een lunchpakket. Deze training is succesvol geweest dankzij de voortreffelijke coordinatie van fellow Ineke en crew. Extern hebben fellows dit mooie project ook ondersteund. ISYI in MoengoI-SYI broadens reach to district Coronie and Marowijne. I-Syi means DID YOU SEE in Surinamese Language. One of the objectives of the I-Syi Empowering Girls Project is to broaden the reach of the project; started in Paramaribo in October last year, the project team has now reached out to participants in two other districts: Coronie and Marowijne. In the weekend of 18-19 March 2023, the I-Syi project team launched the project in: 1. Totness, the capital of the District Coronie, 122 km west from Paramaribo, and 2. Moengo, the capital of the District Marowijne, 108 km east from Paramaribo 18 girls and young women received the basic training to sew the re-usable shopper bag and all are very enthusiastic to continue learning and when ready, participate in the production stream of I-Syi bags. With this roll-out the minimum target of 45 participants has now been reached. In Paramaribo a total of 27 girls have been trained and as per end of March will have produced more than 1,000 bags. We are very proud to mention that one of the participants (from Moengo) who started with the cohort in Paramaribo, has been trained and is now ready to coordinate the group of participants in Moengo. The next step in the project is to identify those participants who are ready to continue with the production from their home-base enabling them to produce more and in doing so, gradually prepare them for being their own entrepreneur, with support from the I-Syi trainer now from a distance. Simultaneously preparations for the next phase of the project are being initiated, which is the training and production of the re-usable cotton sanitary pads, which is planned to start in May 2023. The I-Syi team and participants are highly motivated to reach the next milestones.   |

Laureaat Henk van Vliet Op dinsdag 7 februari 2023 vond tijdens een joint meeting de plechtige ceremonie van de Vocational Excelence Award (VEA) 2023 plaats. De laureaat is dhr. Henk van Vliet. Zijn nominatie is unaniem bekrachtigd na voordracht van de VEA commissie door alle presidenten van de vier Rotary Clubs die Suriname rijk is. Agreement between the Rotary Club of Paramaribo Residence and the A.L. Waaldijkcollege for the execution of the I-Syi Girls Empowerment Project On September 21st the formal signing took place of the agreement between the Rotary Club of Paramaribo Residence and the A.L. Waaldijkcollege for the execution of the I-Syi Girls Empowerment Project. I-Syi means ‘Did you see’ in the Surinamese language At least 45 girls wiil be trained to use a sewing machine and to manufacture environmental-friendly and reusable cotton bags (and in a later stage other items) with cultural print and the I-Syi brand name. The agreement was signed by the President of RCPR, Agnes Moensi-Sokowikromo and by the Chair of the Board of the A.L.Waaldijkcollege, Denise Kort. The Waaldijkcollege is a domestic school incorporated as a Foundation and provides vocational - junior high level - sewing & fashion creation education and more. |

International Day of Peace - 21 Sept 2022 21st september 2022. International Day of Peace and the UN theme for this year was "End Racism Build Peace". After receiving the invitation from the district peace committee, we decided to join this online Zoom meeting with the whole club. We resceduled our regular meeting to a Zoom Peace meeting and enjoyed District Governor Leslie and the other speakers of this Peace event. The topics discussed on the day include: 1) Becoming a Peacebuilder Club and Opportunities for Building Peace through the Rotary Action Group for Peace - Alison Sutherland. 2) Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Based on RI Philosophy and Statements and the Role of DEI in Becoming a More Peace-Filled Rotarian - Dr. Vicki Radel. |

Stuka Prisiri Goes to Staatsolie On Saturday August 13     On Saturday August 13, the Stuka Prisiri kids visited the Staatsolie Refinery in Tout Lui Faut. They departed at 8 am with 2 Staatsolie buses from Totness and arrived at the Refinery complex at 11:30 am. Our President Agnes welcomed the kids on behalf of Staatsolie and Mr Refos and Mr Persaud were introduced. They organized the educational day on behalf of Staatsolie. The morning started with a film showing the safety regulations. The gentlemen then gave information in a PowerPoint presentation about the types of oil that were found and where, the processing and products. They involved the children with questions in the presentation. They explained this with demonstrations of drills present on the tables. After this, the children, volunteers, and Rotarians present were given a bus tour of the Refinery. They were told what was being done and the kids were allowed to ask questions. It was a very educational day for the SP kids. At the end of the afternoon, they were treated to nassie goreng and surprised with a school bag with contents when they left. The volunteers also received a gift. August is Membership monthOn Wednesday August 17, Rotary Suriname had the first joint meeting of the year 2022/2023 in the Staatsolie Conference Room. The Rotary Club of Paramaribo Residence led by President Agnes Moensi hosted this very successful meeting. Upon entering, the guests were welcomed with a welcome drink. After the walk-in, the official part of the evening started. The guest speaker of the evening, Mr Roy Rijger, tax lawyer, managed to captivate the fellows present with his interesting presentation on the current topic, 'the introduction of VAT in Suriname'. For the girls and women empowerment project (one of the focus areas) RCPR has introduced their “I-Syi” project. A 'catwalk' was held during which various models of I-Syi bags were shown. This joint meeting was also the moment to introduce and get to know all the new fellows of the 4 Rotary clubs. New fellows from all 4 clubs were placed 'on the spot'. This successful evening was musically framed by the tones of tabla and keyboard music and concluded with a raffle, a snack box, delicious drinks and of course sufficient fellowship. |

Meeting 21 Juli 2022 On Thursday 21 July we had a special meeting where participation of the fellows was necessary. Due to the sudden road closure, thanks to the flexibility of the fellows, the meeting went ahead via zoom. The budget 2022-2023 has been voted on. July ,9th: Interact Club Brick by Brick  Yes It is official. As their sponsered club we are very glad to announce that we have our own interact club, INTERACT CLUB BRICK BY BRICK is the youngest interact club in Suriname and District 7030. Ready to serve the community! The Charter celebration party of the Interact Club Brick by Brick was held at Surinaamsch Rumhuis . The club started with 45 members who were pinned by the board. The Rotary Surinane family was invited to celebrate this special moment. |

Bezoek aan CoronieBezoek aan Coronie Op zaterdag 9 juli brachten fellows van RCPR een bezoek aan Coronie met een drieledig doel. 1. Er is een verzoek binnengekomen van OS Totness om toiletten te renoveren. 2. Onze President Agnes heeft een vrouwen empowerment project geïnitieerd in Paramaribo. Het gaat om een naaimachine project waarbij de vrouwen zijn geinformeerd en gemotiveerd mee te doen aan het project . 3. Voorbereiding voor een ICT activiteit die we met de Stuka kids zullen uitvoeren op 23 juli Het was een zeer geslaagde dag. Er was een goede sfeer , goede contacten gelegd en we zijn met lekkere snacks verwend.  |

BRICK BY BRICK, OUR NEWEST INTERACT CLUB IN THE DISTRICTBRICK BY BRICK, OUR NEWEST INTERACT CLUB IN THE DISTRICT The Rotary Club of Paramaribo Residence has their own Interact Club. After years of planning and the challenging Covid period the new club was established on May 7th, when 50 kids mostly from the Nassy Brouwer College started with their first training session. After receiving the original certificate from RI, the Charter Celebration and Pin Ceremony was held on Saturday, July 9th where the parents and the Rotary Family from Suriname were also invited. Now we have a third Interact Club in Suriname: Interact Club of Brick by Brick.  |

Handing-over and Appreciation Night       On Thursday 23 June RCPR held its Handing-Over and Appreciation Night in De Waag. During this evening, fellows were heartily thanked for their overall contribution and support to the projects carried out during the year. On this evening, our fellow Erwin Muntslag was also thanked for his many years of commitment to the club by appointing him as an Honorary member. Erwin, who also previously led the club as president, is seen as an excellent example of Rotary values and standards. His finesse for protocol will continue to be used within the club. Also, on this evening the leadership of the club was officially transferred to the incoming board, led by fellow Agnes Moensie. This board will take over the responsibility from the outgoing board starting 1 July. The evening was then concluded with a delicious dinner, where there was a lot of laughter and catching up done between the fellows. All in all, a very good night. |

Celebrating 20 years of Service!     RCPR, chartered on June 5th 2002, celebrated their 20th year of Service, on Saturday, June 18th with a birthday party held at De Waag. All current fellows, past fellows, honorary fellows, as well as representatives of our sister Rotary clubs, Rotaract club of F.R.E.S.H. and our new Interact club BrickByBrick as well as Innerwheel were invited to partake in this celebration. The night started off with a welcome dinner, followed by a short celebration program and topped off with setting off some firecrackers at midnight. Of course, dancing was also part of the festivities! We are ready for 20+ more years of service!  |

Preparing the future of Rotary - Interact preparation training  Rotarians and Rotaractors were very busy last Saturday, June 4th. Besides being represented at the unveiling of the nameplate at the Tamara Foundation (see previous post), they were also present at the Nassy Brouwerschool. Here they were giving an internal training to future interactors on core values held by Rotary International.

Unveiling nameplate of District Grant funded project   On Saturday, June 4th, RCPR and Rotaract of F.R.E.S.H. unveiled the nameplate commemorating the District Grant project initiated at the Tamara Foundation in March of this year. The Board of the Tamara Foundation, as well as the presidents of RCPR and Rotaract of F.R.E.S.H., and a few key project fellows were present. Part of the project was to provide those living at the foundation's housing, a sustainable way of growing vegetables. The first harvest they were able to pick this week were micro-greens and Tayer leaves. Way to go! |

COP walk: DG Sonya Alleyne participates!On Sunday 22 May, Rotary Suriname, together with the visiting District Governor Sonya Alleyne, participated in a COP walk. The group got together at 6:15 in the morning and warmed-up under the professional guidance of trainer Kim. After the warm-up they walked (some ran) approx. 4+ km and closed it with a very welcoming cooldown. |

Meeting 28 April 2022  On Thursday 28 April 2022 the end of the RCPR Child Obesity Prevention project was officially presented during our weekly meeting. The project team summarized the 8-week project, funded by Rotary Suriname, in the form of a report and handed a copy to the Director of Public Health Drs. Rakesh Gajadhar-Sukul. The dietician Wandy Somodihardjo and the trainer Randy Badal also shared their findings with those present; these findings are measurable and proof that a healthy diet and exercise really helps to control obesity. The night was very joyful since we also welcomed our new member Rachel Deekman and enjoyed some nice snacks given by incoming president Agnes. Wrap-Up COP Walk: 10 April 2022   Last Sunday we executed our final walk as part of the Childhood Obesity Prevention Challenge. Together with Kim and Leroy, our trainers of Rock Fitness, we started our walk at 7:15 a.m. Our goal was to walk intensely or run for 40 minutes. As usual, the local police was present and making sure that motorized vehicles did not enter the cordoned off section. After the 40 min it was time for the cool down - Leroy guided us by example, while Kim made sure we did not slack off during this last bit of our day. At the end Kim informed us that, in comparison to our first week, we all as a group had improved our average time by 2-3 minutes. That made our day  We are ready for the next challenge! |

Stuka Prisiri Coronie: Environmental lessons    The Stuka Prisiri team has once again been very creative with the children of Coronie. The theme was environment. The children learned about recycling, they saw examples of recycling products and they talked about why it is important to keep the environment clean. How can we enjoy making useful use of waste? The most fun models were created by the children. The day was not limited to creativity with the hands but also the brain was stimulated with the assignment for a poem in the form of 'elfje'. A poem consisting of eleven words. Project Deliverance Mulo Ellen   On Thursday 31 March, 2 projects RCPR funded for Mulo Ellen, were officially delivered to the school management. The projects included a gutter repair of the school building as well as the repair and donation of several personal computers for the computer room. This was done in the presence of the school management and some pupils. We would like to thank Mr. Jerrel Bonela for donating some computers, which were then made ready for local use. We also would like to thank our fellows Eddy, Reina, Arno and Henri for their part in the successful deliverance of these projects. |

COP Challenge Phase 3: 27 March 2022  Child Hood Obesity Prevention Challenge - PEOPLE OF ACTION- PHASE 3 (week 3) Sunday, March 27th : Walk This past Sunday we did it again with the help of the trainers of Rock Fitness and of course our very enthusiastic participants! The challenge this week was to finish 4 rounds along the Dr. Sophie Redmondstraat with intervals of running and walking in between. Some of us got tired and wanted to consider giving up, but with the awesome motivational support of the other participants they kept on going and finished their personal goals of the day - that's what this group is all about; motivate, inspire and reach our targets .Haven't joined us yet? Symbolic handing-over proceeds Rotary Suriname runs for Charity 2022On Wednesday, 23 March 2022, RC of Paramaribo hosted a special meeting. Together with RC of Paramaribo Residence and RC of Paramaribo Central, the donated amounts from the proceeds of the Miami Marathon were handed over by means of token checks to the selected authorities; Betheljada Foundation, Kennedy Foundation and SURESUR. The representatives expressed their heartfelt thanks and motivated the Rotarians to continue with this energetic and successful initiative. Unique this year was the MAIMI-PARAMARIBO combination, in which the SU runners, who could not be present in Miami, ran the course in Paramaribo on the same morning. This combination has created a platform for many Surinamese athletes and increased volunteer participation. The health aspect and the objectives awarded have also encouraged many non-Rotarians to donate to this event. Great cooperation of the Rotary clubs. Thanks to the motivation and many drops of sweat from the athletes, support from the donors and inspiring efforts of the volunteers. The script has already been written for the coming year   |

Fun and Play at Children's Home Tamara    Today, 19 March 2022, the Rotary Club of Paramaribo Residence has completed the first part of a long-term program financed by a District 7030 grant. Together with team Haukes, RCPR has provided the children's home with refurbishment of 3 classrooms, which are also equipped with all the necessary equipment that the children need for doing homework, crafts, and an IT room for playful 'learning'. For the IT room a 'kids for kids' program is being prepared, which will be carried out together with the Rotaract club of FRESH. A program in which the children will learn from each other and support each other in developing computer knowledge and the possibilities that this knowledge will offer. Under the guidance of the team the kids soon started clicking, playing, and zooming to get over the computer anxiety. The second part is the setting up of an ecological vegetable garden with the Rotaract club of FRESH. Good attention will be paid to this in due course. To ensure the sustainability of the projects in this plan, the Rotarians and the Rotaractors committed themselves to guide both the children and the leaders for a 12 month-period. For protection, no pictures of the children will be published. However, the Rotary team made sure to offer the children and leaders a memorable day with good food, drinks, play material and fun moments. |

Childhood Obesity Prevention Challenge: Phase 3   On Sunday, March13th Rotary Suriname started with phase 3 of the Childhood Obesity Prevention Challenge by launching the Walk Against Childhood Obesity. The participants of the challenge as well as their supporters started the morning with a warming up session by instructors of RockFitness gym. After the warm-up the participants started their walk in the Ministry of Public Health designated walk/run zone. Kick off COP ChallengeKick off Child Hood Obesity Prevention Challenge PEOPLE OF ACTION – PHASE 1 The Rotary Club of Paramaribo Residence has taken the initiative by personally guiding and supporting 30 NON-Rotarians consisting of 9 families and 10 adults in the Obesity Prevention Challenge for a period of 6 weeks. In this joint journey to awareness and action, they hope to be able to give a positive spin to a healthy and sustainable lifestyle for this focus group. For professional support, the club has called in the support of dietician Wandy Soemodihardjo and a Team of Coaches led by Rock crossfit gym owner Randy Badal. The process is divided into several phases. Yesterday the kick-off took place with exciting presentations given by the medical specialists of the club. It was an eye opener for all present. The shocking images and medical explanations have given the Rotarians and focus group extra motivation to take healthy action. Phase 2: Saturday 5 March: sports and nutrition event – focus group Phase 3: Sunday March 13 - start with Run/Walk series on the initiative of Rotary Suriname. This will happen 6 Sundays in a row. All volunteers and support group of the focus group. Phase 4: Personal guidance in nutrition and sports 2x a week - focus group Phase 5: Thursday April 28 - evaluation and conclusion with presentation COP in the prenatal phase.  |

Vocational Excellence Award 2022   Op dinsdag 22 februari 2022 heeft Rotary Suriname de jaarlijkse Rotary Vocational Excellence Award toegekend aan de laureaat Udo E.V. Karg. Dhr. Karg werd hierbij gehuldigd voor zijn bijdrage in de Visserij sector waarin hij al jaren in participeert. Het werd een hele mooie avond bestaande uit een kleine vertegenwoordiging vanuit de Rotaryclubs en familie en gasten van de laureaat. De club die dit jaar de eer toekwam om de avond en alles er om heen te organiseren was de Rotary Club of Paramaribo Central die uitmuntend vertegenwoordigd werd door haar president Shirley Sowma-Sumter. De laureaat kreeg verscheidene eerbetonen, alsook het bijbehorende plakkaat, het jury rapport en de door de Rotary op een usb stick samengestelde documentarie over zijn leven aangereikt. De overhandiging vond gezamenlijk plaatst door de 4 presidenten van de Rotary clubs. Na de officiële huldiging kon er onder het genot van een klein hapje en een drankje nog nagenoten worden van de avond; de vissnack kon hierbij überhaupt niet ontbreken. On Twosday 22-02-2022 the annual Rotary Vocational Excellence Award was given to Mr. Udo E.V. Karg who is active in the Fishery sector. The Vocational Excellence Award is given by Rotary Suriname to a person whose track record shows its social and economic impact on making a better Suriname. The motto ‘Serve to Change Lives’ is really applicable here. |

Stuka Prisiri: Learning New Things in Coronie   Learning new things in a very fun way! Saturday, 19 February. Music was the theme today in Coronie for the children and Rotary’s Stuka Prisiri team. The talented rapper, Gilton Amoksie, supported the project with a special assignment. The Stuka children would write and sing their own rap song on this day. At the end of the group discussion, the whole team was treated to a healthy snack and the children made drawings about what music evokes in them. After that, 'Gilly' took the children into the world of music and the many facets associated with it. The mood was very good during the sporty warm-up session for body and voice, which was achieved by having a mini dance battle by the team captains, as well as loudly calling out some text and slogans. The morning ended with a rap song about 'Stuka Prisiri' composed by the cheerful children themselves. They thoroughly enjoyed this creative morning. The children expressed the thought of already eagerly looking forward to the next Stuka Event. |

Peace meeting with winners Give Peace a Chance Challenge   On February, 17th we had a special " peace" meeting. Our own fellow Krishna Mathoera, who is also the Minister of Defense, inspired us with a peaceful talk about how peace has different meanings. "Peace means to help where necessary, to help the people in difficult situations. To remain calm in stressful situations is also a form of peace; to understand each other is also peace, and to help one another is also peace. Peace starts from within, peace starts in a family". We want to thank fellow Krishna for her motivational inspiring and most of all peaceful talk. The winners of our peace project GIVE PEACE A CHANCE were also present at the meeting. The peace committee of district 7030 wanted to encourage and support Youth to create and try out their own ideas for facilitating, encouraging and promoting peace in the community. This is a combined project with our own Rotaract Club of F.R.E.S.H. The winners are: The 1st price winner : Shanelva Hoever, student of Havo 2. The 2nd price winner : Shannon Chotoe, student of Lyceum 2. The 3rd price winner : Shofar Cruden, student of NATIN. All winners were rewarded with nice prices! Rotary Runs for Charity     Today, Sunday 6 February 2022, several fellows and friends of Rotary Suriname participated in the Miami Marathon in Miami, United States and in Paramaribo, Suriname in the Surinamese version. The opportunity was given to anyone to sponsor the various participants for a certain amount. The total amount collected will go to the benefit of 3 institutions: Huize Betheljada, Suresur and the Kennedy Foundation. Very early in the morning, the water stations were manned by our enthusiastic water stop hosts who were ready to provide the athletes with a refreshing refillable bag of water. Sanitary Maintenance Service Sri Ganesh School    On Friday, January 27, the Rotary Club of Paramaribo Residence also completed a maintenance service with minor work at the Shri Ganesh school. The work was done on the toilet group which was donated to the school as a joint project with the Rotary Club of Purmerend (NL) more than 10 years ago. The headmaster received her maintenance report from Rotarian Roberto. The Rotary team was able to surprise the cheerful children and teachers with a tasty treat. It is worth noting that the school has a 4-person team of interior caretakers who work in a rotating schedule and support the children after using the toilet. They keep the whole school clean and pay close attention to hygiene and covid protocol during breaks. The school grounds and classrooms looked quite neat and tidy. Renovation St. Benedictus School   The Rotary Club of Paramaribo Residence completed the maintenance service of the toilet group of the St. Benedictus school last Thursday 27 January 2022. The toilet group was built for the school almost 11 years ago in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Rapid City (USA). It was a wonderful morning with grateful stories about the strict supervision and support of the teachers’ team to maintain the toilet building neatly. The maintenance report was handed over to the school principal by Rotarian Roberto, after which the children sang some songs beautifully. During the break, the cheerful children and teachers were able to enjoy the tasty treat that came along with the Rotary visit. Stuka Prisiri at CoronieOn Saturday December 18, Rotary club of Paramaribo Quota and Rotary club of Paramaribo Residence started a Stuka Prisiri project for the sixth time and this time in the Coronie district, 122 km from Paramaribo. The areas of focus addressed bij this project are: Child Health, Basic Education and Literacy, Economic Community Development. A total of 8 Rotarians participate in this project. Other Rotarians will join in occasionally. 24 children from 4 primary schools (7th grade) of this district have been selected to participate in the Stuka Prisiri program that runs from January 2022 to December 2023. The goal of this project is to develop their soft skills and in that way contribute to a positive self-image of these children. The program will include the following components: art and culture, basic life skills, sport and career orientation. This time it was a special occasion because the previous programs were all performed in Paramaribo, while now it will take place in a distant district. After singing the national anthem the President of Rotary club of Paramaribo Quota, Daniëla Herkul, opened this special meeting with a speech and a representative of Rotary club of Paramaribo Residence also spoke. The coordinator of this project and the 7 volunteers from Coronie who will support the Stuka Prisiri project were also present. The children all received a bag with, among other things, notebooks, a pencil case with contents, colored pencils, things that will be used for different activities. All participants also received a t-shirt with the Stuku Prisiri and the Rotary logo on it. In order to carry out the project, we received a laptop, a printer, cartridges and various other attributes from a number of fellow sponsors, which we handed over to the coordinator. In between we sang some Christmas songs. Of course there was no shortage of snacks and drinks on this special day in Coronie. We ended the meeting by singing two Christmas carols namely We wish you a merry Christmas (in 3 languages) and Jingle Bells, while everyone waved enthusiastically. We are all looking forward to starting the program in January!  |

Children's Day with the Tamara FoundationSunday 5 December 2021  Today is Children's Day! The purpose of Children's Day is not only to spoil children with fun things, but also to keep children's rights up to date. RCPR has therefore decided to approach the Tamara Foundation and organize a fun day for children in crisis. The Tamara Children's Home Foundation is a private institution that temporarily shelters children between the ages of 4 and 16 who are in crisis situations, offers them structure and provides the children with their daily care. The children stay in Tamara for 3 to 6 months. Tamara was founded in 1998 with the main goal of giving the children a better tomorrow (Tamara means tomorrow). The children come from various situations such as: physical abuse, mental abuse, neglect, sexual abuse, unexpectedly homeless or orphaned. To guarantee the privacy of these children and to protect the children, very strict rules are applied by this home. Pictures of children are therefore NOT PUBLISHED. The Paramaribo Zoo has given the children free admission and after the treasure hunt with Mrs. Marscha, a collection of beautiful reading books was also donated to the foundation. The children were delighted to enjoy a lunch meal provided by McDonald’s. After lunch, the children surprised the organization with a beautiful song of thanks and everyone went home with a smile on their faces. -TOGETHER we may give our children roots to grow, and wings to fly- |

Club meeting, speaker AnoepThe Rotary club of Paramaribo Residence has gained another doctorate and has celebrated this with him defending some humorous statements, a cheerful presentation and great food. Our beloved doctor has also been the winner of the last cooking challenge (the club's fundraiser) and has treated the fellows in excess to 'the winning dish' Curry duck and BBQ drumsticks. We all enjoyed a very nice club meeting with our guests. Cooking ChallengeNovember 6, the Rotary Club of Paramaribo Residence organized a fundraiser in the form of a cooking competition in which the fellows of the club had to prepare their food in teams at home and sell it in the Garden of the Waaggebouw. Possibilities for take-out service as well as consumption of small portions on the spot were available. The super fun sale went very smoothly and the bottom of the empty pots were quickly visible. The winners of the challenge cup and the cooks with the most bragging rights were announced by an expert jury. Proceeds will go towards the ongoing fight against Covid-19. This will be done through support and collaboration with all stakeholders. Part of this is to continue to raise awareness of the importance of vaccinations and support for doctors and patients who, due to the lack of beds in hospitals, are forced to be treated at home. The Rotary club looks back on a very successful and competitive fellowship activity with great results that will hopefully bring some relief to the ever-changing pandemic challenges facing our community. Door overdracht van kennis waarbij meerdere generaties uit de familie een solide basis hebben gelegd en vakkundige partnerships uit Nederland, heeft Varross zich kunnen bewijzen als de toonaangevende groothandel in vlees en vleeswaren binnen onze regio. Tijdens de presentatie werd al snel duidelijk dat Varross voldoet aan elke kwaliteitsnorm die de branche eist en dat zij gefocust blijven op het leveren van kwaliteit in hun producten en diensten. Het was een leuke en interactieve presentatie waarbij de Rotarians ook een kijkje achter de schermen mochten nemen. Uiteraard moesten ook wij aan de hygiënische protocollen voldoen maar dat leverde alleen meer plezier op. Na de rondleiding werden wij verrast met alle verschillende lekkernijen die door het bedrijf worden gemaakt. In deze gezellige setting heeft Rotarian Gerard zijn Rotarypin mogen ontvangen en hebben de fellows van een leuke fellowshiptijd kunnen genieten. Met een volle buik en ‘kerst’ pakketje in de arm hebben wij de Gastheer en gastvrouw voor deze leerrijke en leuke ervaring bedankt.  |

Launch Instructiefilm RekenprojectAls gevolg van de covid-19 pandemie is de noodzaak tot afstands/digitaal onderwijs, waarbij de leerlingen en leerkrachten niet meer fysiek aanwezig kunnen zijn, toegenomen. Op donderdag 9 september heeft de launch van het rekenproject “Instructiefilms voor leerkrachten rekendidactiek/methodiek GLO” in de Elisabeth school II plaatsgevonden. Dit zijn zelf geproduceerde filmpjes met didactische instructies van rekendomeinen, voor leerkrachten van alle RKBO GLO scholen in Suriname. Deze instructies vinden stapsgewijs plaats en geven de leerkracht de nodige inzichten. Voor enkele leerkrachten kunnen de instructie films ook dienen als een opfrissertje. De instructies in de films worden vertaald naar de leeromstandigheden en het niveau van de leerlingen. Met enige inventiviteit van de leerkracht en gebruik van deze instructie filmpjes, kan de leerstof op de juiste manier aan de leerlingen worden overgedragen. Het behalen van goede schoolresultaten door het rekenkundig blijven trainen van leerkrachten op GLO niveau wordt vanaf 2018 door de Rotary Club of Paramaribo Residence ondersteund en zijn er al 3 projecten onder leiding van Rotarian Ewald Levens opgeleverd.
Namens de Rotary Club of Paramaribo Residence, sprak president Margriet van Dijk-Nouh Chaia de groep toe en wenste hen veel succes in de uitvoering: “Uiteindelijk leveren kwalitief sterke leerkrachten een absolute bijdrage aan de ontwikkeling en persoonlijke groei van goede kwaliteit burgers in de toekomst”.  |

Stuka Prisiri Winti Wai en LivornoOp zondag 29 augustus is het project Stuka prisiri, een gezamenlijk project van RCPR en RCPQ en in samenwerking met stichting STIWEWA, feestelijk afgerond. De Rotary club van Paramaribo Residence en de Rotary Club van Paramaribo Quota zijn sinds 2006 partners bij de uitvoering van het succesvolle project 'Stuka Prisiri'. Deze samenwerking heeft als doel om jongeren met potentie door middel van een educatief en recreatief programma te stimuleren en te ondersteunen bij het ontdekken van hun eigen talenten, waardoor zij een positief zelfbeeld en goede richting voor hun toekomst kunnen creëren. Door tussenkomst van covid heeft het project bijna anderhalf jaar stilgelegen. Om geen verdere demotivatie te krijgen hebben de Rotarians gemeend om de activiteiten van het project op een leuke manier met de buurtkinderen van Winti Wai en Livorno af te sluiten. Er stond een dag op het programma met veel activiteiten die zouden plaatsvinden op het grote buitenterrein van het buurthuis. De regenbuien gooiden echter roet in het eten. Dat mocht de pret niet drukken en de kinderen organiseerden samen met de Rotarians spontaan andere in-house activiteiten zoals een dansbattle, waar leuke prijzen mee te winnen waren. De kinderen werden getrakteerd op lekkere hapjes, eten en andere lekkernijen en de winnaars van de dansbattles kregen een financiële bijdrage voor de aanschaf van schoolspullen. Deze werd onder toeziend oog van de ouders in ontvangst genomen. Ook hebben alle scholieren van dit het stuka prisiri project abonnementskaarten, met een geldigheid van 4 personen per kaart, voor de dierentuin -Paramaribo ZOO - gedoneerd gekregen. Ondanks de regenbuien werd de kinderdag vrolijk en tot volle tevredenheid van iedereen afgesloten. |

Het Rotary Rekenpuzzel-project 2021 afgerond Het Rotary Rekenpuzzel - project 2021 afgerond De noodzaak tot afstandsonderwijs oftewel digitaal onderwijs is steeds groter geworden door de COVID-19 pandemie. Afstandsonderwijs is een vorm van onderwijs waarbij studenten niet fysiek aanwezig zijn om onderwezen te worden en kan op verschillen manier plaatsvinden. Na afwisselend sluiten en openen van de scholen heeft het MinOWC het besluit genomen om de scholen weer gesloten te houden, omdat de condities voor optimaal en veilig fysiek onderwijs onvoldoende aanwezig zijn. Vanuit een maatschappelijk-verantwoordelijkheids oogpunt, voelt de Rotary Club of Paramaribo Residence (RCPR) zich ook (mede) verantwoordelijk een bijdrage te leveren aan het onderwijsproces uitgestippeld door het MinOWC. De RCPR heeft vanaf 20 januari 2021 de Rekenopdrachten (Rotary rekenpuzzels) geïntroduceerd, die zijn gedeeld via de Facebook pagina van de RCPR. Hiervoor zijn verantwoordelijk geweest de Rotarians Ewald Levens en Yvonne Mohabir, die respectievelijk belast waren met het opstellen van de puzzels en het verzorgen van de lay-out en plaatsen van de puzzels op Facebook. Wekelijks, op de maandag en op de woensdag, zijn de rekenopdrachten/puzzels geplaatst op de RCPR Facebook pagina. Elke vrijdag zijn de oplossingen van de voor die week verschenen rekenpuzzels geplaatst. Deze aanpak, bewust gekozen door de RCPR, dient ter ondersteuning van het rekenonderwijs in de bovenbouw van het lager onderwijs. Op vrijdag 2 juli is het projekt afgesloten voor dit schooljaar. In totaal zijn 46 rekenopdrachten gepubliceerd met bijbehorende oplossingen.. Inhoudelijk hebben deze rekenopdrachten/puzzels betrekking op de onderwerpen: samengestelde bewerkingen, breuken, decimale getallen, procenten, meten (lengtematen, oppervlakte maten, gewichtsmaten, inhoudsmaten , wegsommen), kapitaalsommen, verhoudingen en schalen. Deze onderwerpen zijn allemaal vervat in het leerprogramma van het leerjaar 8. De 46 rekenopdrachten met bijbehorende oplossingen treft u aan op de Rotary Facebook pagina https://www.facebook.com/rotarysuriname/.  Met dit project heeft de RCPR gepoogd kinderen te stimuleren om verbanden te kunnen leggen, problemen te doorzien en oplossingsgericht te denken en handelen. De RCPR heeft gekozen voor het vak rekenen – wiskunde, omdat dit vak één van de bouwstenen is van het onderwijs en dient vanwege die reden de juiste aandacht te krijgen. Er zijn heel veel beroepen, waarbij goed kunnen rekenen onmisbaar is. In het dagelijks leven maken we veelvuldig gebruik van allerlei berekeningen. Iedere arts, fiscaaljurist, kapster en winkelier moet op zijn minst goed kunnen rekenen. Rekenen is onmisbaar in de ontwikkeling en de toekomst van elk kind. De RCPR zal altijd ondersteuning verlenen aan het basisonderwijs op welke gebied dan ook.Voor het komend schooljaar werkt de Youth commissie van de RCPR aan een vernieuwd Rekenprojekt, waarover binnenkort meer informatie uitkomt. De Youth commissie van de RCPR houdt zich bezig met jeugd en educatie. Andere bekende projekten van de RCPR zijn o.a. het jaarlijkse Go GLO evenement en het Stuka Prisirie projekt.  |

2021 District Awards: District Governor Citation On Thursday 24 June 2021, the 2021 District Awards were held via zoom. Rotary Club of Paramaribo Residence was recognized by their outstanding contribution to the goals and objectives of District 7030 in 2020-2021 and received the 5-star District Governor Citation. RCPR would like to thank the Board of 2020-2021 for their outstanding execution during the past year in obtaining this recognition for the club.

Appreciation Night RCPR 2021 Last Friday, 25 June 2021, the Handing-over and Appreciation Night for the Rotary year 2020-2021 was held through Zoom. Before the meeting started, a package was delivered to each fellow. It contained a beautiful wooden (tapas) board, matching tapas, a bottle of wine and a thank-you card. Some fellows also received an envelope with a present. There were specific instructions for this - 'Only open it when President Robert tells you to'.  Around 7:15 p.m. everyone was welcomed by President Robert Hahn who showed the attendees a compilation film of the past year. Opinions about the film were unanimous: "Have we done so much in the past year?" And we really did. A Covid year, with a mix of virtual and physical meetings and also a bicycle ride, a vaccination activity, the distribution of school furniture and much more. But also the 'regular activities' like the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) and the Vocational Excellence Awards (VEA) were executed.              |

Het Vaccin Heeft Mijn Leven Gered PARAMARIBO - “Ik ben ervan overtuigd dat het vaccin mij goed beschermd heeft en ik geen permanent letsel of schade heb opgelopen aan mijn lichaam, na besmet te zijn geworden met het coronavirus”, vertelt de bekende Waddy Sowma aan de krant. Sowma, die zich nu uitstekend voelt en zijn dagelijks leven weer heeft opgepakt werd midden juni COVID-vrij verklaard. De 65-jarige Sowma vertelt dat hij op 17 mei bij de priklocatie van het Academisch Ziekenhuis Paramaribo (AZP) was gegaan voor zijn tweede dosis AstraZeneca-vaccin. De dag verliep vlot en hij kreeg geen last van bijwerkingen na te zijn gevaccineerd. Maar ongeveer een week daarna kreeg Sowma plotseling koortsverschijnselen en had last van hoesten. “Dit was voor mij aanleiding om te gaan testen. Ik ging toen naar Medilab om mij te laten testen. En in de middag kreeg ik helaas het bericht dat ik besmet was met COVID-19. Ik heb mijzelf toen gelijk in thuisisolatie gezet. De eerste vijf dagen waren de symptomen meer een beetje koorts, geen hoge koorts. Dus het viel redelijk mee. Maar de zesde of zevende dag begon ik mij echt zorgen te maken over de koorts die aanhield en mijn eetlust die afnam. En als mijn eetlust afneemt ben ik echt ziek”, vertelt Sowma zijn verhaal. Hij meldde zich daarom op 31 mei aan bij de checkpoint van het AZP, waar er een thorax-foto van hem werd gemaakt en labtesten en bloedonderzoek werden gedaan. Het bloedonderzoek wees uit dat Sowma een flinke inflammatie had opgelopen. Gelukkig bleek dat zijn longen schoon waren. Die dag werd hij opgenomen in het ziekenhuis. “Het waren voor mij twee heel slechte dagen in het ziekenhuis omdat ik slecht kon slapen vanwege al die zaken die zich afspeelden op de zaal in het ziekenhuis. Want je ligt met meerdere patiënten. De hele nacht is het een aan- en afvoer van zuurstofflessen voor de mensen die zuurstof nodig hebben. De verpleegsters die komen checken. Ik moet toegeven dat de verpleegsters, doktoren en ziekenverzorgers keihard werken, zij zetten zich ongelofelijk in om patiënten te verzorgen. Hun werk moet je niet onderschatten, want het verzorgen van COVID-19-patiënten is geen easy job”. Na twee dagen in het ziekenhuis te hebben gelegen werd Sowma ontslagen uit het ziekenhuis en ging in zijn eigen huis weer voor enkele dagen in isolatie totdat hij volledig hersteld was van COVID-19. De volledig gevaccineerde Sowma zegt ervan overtuigd te zijn dat het vaccin hem goed beschermd heeft nadat hij besmet is geraakt en niet dood is gegaan of permanent letsel in het lichaam heeft opgelopen. “Ik heb heel mijn leven lang het vertrouwen gesteld in de medische wetenschap. En als miljoenen mensen het vaccin al toegediend hebben gekregen en er geen idote dingen zijn gebeurd waarom zou ik dan moeten twijfelen. De vaccins zijn ontwikkeld door de wetenschap. En in het buitenland zie je nu dat landen, waar een groot deel van de bevolking is gevaccineerd, weer teruggaan naar normaal. Trouwens, mijn 84-jarige moeder en broer die ook gevaccineerd zijn en besmet zijn geraakt zijn nu ook helemaal hersteld van het coronavirus. Het vaccin heeft zijn nut bewezen”, aldus Sowma. |

Ryla Suriname 2021  Rotary Youth Leadership Awards ( RYLA) is a leadership development program run by Rotary. It fosters continued and stronger leadership of Youth by providing them with a valuable training experience. This edition included presentations, activities, and workshops that covered a variety of topics.    The theme of RYLA 2021 was Digital Connect and was held on Saturday 29 May and Sunday 30 May, all via Zoom. We started on Saturday with a lot of speakers who inspired the RYLA participants with their great topics. On Sunday the RYLA participants were put into various break-out rooms, where under supervision of a Rotary member they participated in writing a Manifest for the Future. A manifest is a concise, usually point by point, representation of assumptions. The choice of manifest was made to remind the RYLA participants what is important and what they believe in. It should help them to plan their course and sharpen their personal goals. It is also to motivate and inspire when shaping their own future. In the second half of the Sunday they had their presentations.   During the RYLA a small competition was promoted. The participants were asked to be creative and design their own Zoom background for the RYLA. Many did as asked and at the end of the two days two winners were announced.     In short, RYLA Suriname 2021 was great. We would like to thank all the participants, helpers and speakers for making this a successful event! |

Vocational Excellence Award 2021 Internist - Infectioloog Stephen Vreden ontving op donderdag 29 april jl. de Vocational Excellence Award 2021 van Rotary Suriname. De award is voor de 26e keer uitgereikt. Vanwege de corona situatie was de award ceremonie anders dan normaal; plechtig, maar in kleine setting met in acht neming van alle veiligheidsmaatregelen. De organisatie lag dit keer in handen van de Rotary Club of Paramaribo Residence. De drie Rotary Clubs van Suriname zijn zeer vereerd om deze markante en gevierde medicus en wetenschapper toe te voegen aan de lijst van laureaten.   |

COVID-19 Vaccinatie Hands-on ProjectOp dinsdag 20 april hebben we als Rotary Club of Paramaribo Residence samen met Buurtvereniging STIWEWA een Covid-19 vaccinatiedag georganiseerd. Het doel was de buurtbewoners van Winti Wai en omgeving de mogelijkheid te bieden zich zo dicht mogelijk in hun buurt te laten vaccineren. Vanaf 08.00 tot 14.00 uur kon men terecht op de Openbare school Winti Wai. Het BOG zorgde met zijn mobiele eenheid voor de vaccinatie.   Met flyers die in de buurt rondgedeeld werden, brachten we de vaccinatiedag onder de aandacht van de 60-plussers. Ook via radio-interviews werd deze doelgroep opgeroepen om zich te laten vaccineren. Bij het mobiliseren viel op dat er onder de bevolking weerstand was om het spuitje te ontvangen; er was angst voor bijwerkingen en twijfel of het vaccin wel werkzaam was. Uiteindelijk hebben in totaal 34 personen zich aangemeld, wat minder is dan waarop we gerekend hadden. We zullen als club deze activiteit evalueren. Belangrijk is dat er meer vertrouwen komt in het vaccin en dat men beseft dat het vaccin veilig is.            |

IN MEMORY OF PDG HENRI GUDA  On March 25, 2021 PDG Henri Guda from Suriname passed away. Rotarian Henri Albert Maria Guda was born on August 5, 1933 and has been member of the Rotary Club of Paramaribo since June 15, 1970. He became President of the club in the fiscal year 1988-1989 and the first District Governor from Suriname in 1997-1998. On July 29, 2019 he became an Honorary member. Unique was last year's celebration of his 50 golden years of Rotary service. A slideshow was also shared on the District Facebook page. (https://www.facebook.com/674235389262700/posts/3355736204445925/?vh=e&d=n). He was widely respected throughout the District for both his wisdom, charm and wit. At the District Conference 2019 in Guadeloupe PDG Harry Louis (1998-1999) even asked me about PDG Henri. It was then that I realized, that asked about after 22 years, how loved and respected he was. As former diplomat he was known for his strong belief in the power of protocol. He saved us from many a blunder! PDG Henri has been the initiator of several annual projects, among which, the Rotary Vocational Excellence award - a joint project of all 3 Rotary Clubs of Suriname, the National Art Fair, and the donations to the Salvation Army. As PDG Henri mentioned in one of his interviews : “Being a Rotarian gives me much satisfaction”. We know that his star will keep on shining on Suriname‘s and on District 7030‘s firmament! Workshop Rotary Healthy Cooking CompetitionAs part of the Child Obesity Prevention program, Rotary Suriname is organizing a Healthy Cooking Competition for children. In preparation for the competition, a workshop was held with the children on Saturday, March 6 2021, as to put together their healthy menu. For this event the children were shown a video made by a dietician, to explain to them the importance of healthy eating and what to pay attention to when cooking. There was also a chef present to talk to the children about healthy, but also tasty food. A lot of Rotarians were present during this event to help the children with their menu and any questions they might have. The finals of the Rotary Healthy Cooking Competition will be on the 24th of April. After the competition the recipes of the children will be compiled into a booklet. These will be handed out to schools and children of neighborhood organizations to show them tasty simple healthy recipes made by children for children.            |

Update RCPR Schoolmeubilair projectOnlangs is het jaarlijks terugkerend Schoolmeubilair project van Rotary Club Paramaribo Residence (RCPR) wederom van start gegaan. De trekker dit jaar van dit project is mevrouw Reina Ramautar-Ori met ondersteuning van het bestuur van RCPR en de overige Fellows. Zoals reeds eerder gemeld was het gedoneerd materiaal in januari ontvangen en nu was het in februari tijd om het te verdelen. In dit project zijn er dit jaar ook 2 ziekenhuizen meegenomen met name het s'Lands Hospitaal onder leiding van mevrouw Soenita Nannanpanday en het Diakonessen Ziekenhuis onder leiding van de heer Clyde Cairo. Beide directeuren spraken hun genoegen uit naar President Robert Hahn van RCPR en waren heel dankbaar voor de gedoneerde wachtkamerstoelen en kleuterstoeltjes voor de kinderafdeling. Hoofddoel blijft nog steeds de scholen te voorzien van schoolmeubilair daar waar de nood het hoogst is .   Op donderdag 11 februari 2021 zijn de fellows toen getogen naar Albina alwaar 4 scholen voorzien zijn geworden van schoolmeubilair, te weten: de St.Gerardusschool (RKBO) , de J.H. Aaronschool (EBGS) , Openbare school I Albina en Openbare school II Albina. Tegelijkertijd heeft president Robert ook enkele boekjes van het Rotary Suriname Child Obesity Prevention program afgegeven aan de respectievelijke schoolhoofden. Alle schoolleiders hebben vervolgens hun dank uitgesproken aan het Bestuur en de fellows van de club.          Hierna is het donatie project op 19 februari afgesloten met het voorzien van O.S. Pomona van schoolmeubilair. Ook hier was men dankbaar met het meubilair waarvan de kinderen zeker gebruik kunnen maken.    RCPR hoopt met dit project een wezenlijke bijdrage te leveren aan het prettig ervaren van het onderwijs leerproces. |

Childhood Obesity Prevention ProgrammaROTARY SURINAME LANCEERT KINDERBOEK OVER OVERGEWICHT PARAMARIBO – Rotary Suriname lanceerde via een virtueel ZOOM event, een kinderboek om gezond eten bij kinderen te stimuleren. Het boek kan landelijk worden ingezet als lesmateriaal voor de scholen. De Presidents van de drie Rotary Clubs van Suriname, Nicole Tjin A Djie, Robert Hahn en Vyas Gokoel presenteerden, dit kinderboek aan de Minister Ramadhin van Volksgezondheid en Minister Levens van Onderwijs. Rotary Suriname heeft hiermee gevolg gegeven aan een eerdere oproep van de District Governor van Rotary District 7030 voor het jaar 2020 - 2021, Dhr. Lisle Chase. Virginia Oostburg heeft als coordinator van dit programma in Suriname, het prioriteitsprogramma Childhood Obesity Prevention (COP) geimplementeerd. Een van de projecten is de uitgifte van het kinderboek getiteld “On Bon Mange” oftewel “Eet Goed”, welke in drie talen Frans, Engels en Nederlands is uitgebracht.  |

Ontvangst schoolmeubilairOp 30 december 2020 is de boot met de container vol schoolmeubilair aangekomen. Door de feestdagen was er enig oponthoud, maar op 4 januari 2021 kon de container worden ingeklaard en in ontvangst worden genomen door President Robert en PP Steven. De commissie is inmiddels al naarstig op zoek naar geschikte scholen voor het gedoneerde schoolmeubilair. Dank gaat uit naar de medewerking die onze fellows hebben gegeven bij het transporteren van het meubilair, het bieden van opslagruimte en coördineren van de ontvangst en selectie procedure van de scholen.       |

RCPR Fundraising: Plantation BrunchOp zondag 13 December organiseerde de fundraisingscommissie van de club een ware Plantation brunch. Deze werd gehouden in het district Commewijne en wel op Plantage Katwijk.    Fellows Jules, Caroline en team hadden een heerlijke brunch bereid a la buffet concept. Een ieder die zich had opgegeven was welkom de plantage aan te doen vanaf 11 uur in de ochtend en te genieten van de omgeving. Tegen 2 uur in de middag was de buffet tafel gereed en konden de aanwezige gasten genieten van een heus pre-Kerstmaal. Er was voor elk wat wils zoals skirt steak, Kerstham, pasta, salade en natuurlijk heerlijke desserts. Het was aangenaam om elkaar na zo lang te kunnen zien, kennis te maken met anderen en gezellig torie te praten.      |

RCPR Srefidensi FietstochtOm het 45-jarig bestaan van de Republiek te gedenken werd er op 25 November j.l. een heuze Srefidensie fietstocht georganiseerd. Hieraan hebben 20+ fellows, partners en familieleden geparticipeerd. De organiserende commissie, geleid door fellows Karen en Elviera, had een mooi schema in elkaar gezet waaraan er zich nagenoeg stipt aan gehouden is. Time management op zijn best! Al vroeg in de ochtend verzamelden we aan de voet van de brug over de Suriname rivier, Commewijne zijde alwaar iedereen zich gereed maakte voor de tocht.

World Polio Day Virtual ActivityDe virtuele polio loop activiteit is op zaterdag 24 oktober 2020, World Polio Day, van start gegaan. Voor deze loop werd gevraagd dat de deelnemers tussen 24 en 31 oktober of 5km liepen/renden of 25 km fietsten of 1 km zwommen. Hierna werd er een foto van de prestatie gepost op de facebook pagina van de loop. De Rotary Club of Paramaribo Residence heeft in het kader hiervan op donderdag 29 oktober op verschillende locaties een loop onder haar fellows georganiseerd. Er is gelopen in Commewijne, Paramaribo Noord en Zuid. De fellows hadden hun End Polio shirt aan en/of hun End Polio bidon bij zich. Met veel enthousiasme en fellowship is er 5 km afgelegd om de End Polio awareness te promoten.     |

Virtueel Bezoek DG Lisle ChaseVorige week vond het virtuele bezoek plaats van District Governor Lisle aan de Rotary Clubs van Suriname. Op woensdag 7 oktober was er een meeting met de Board en Chairs van RCPR. DG Lisle werd van harte welkom geheten door President Robert, waarna een korte film werd vertoond over de historie en de service projecten van onze club. Vervolgens werd het jaarplan gepresenteerd waarbij elke Chair de plannen voor het komend jaar toonde, en een voortgangsrapportage gaf. Extra aandacht werd gegeven aan de recent afgeronde projecten Go GLO en Sanitatie.           |

Sanitatie Project C.R. Froweinschool en SelectaschoolAfgelopen maandag 5 Oktober was de oplevering van het sanitatie project op de C.R.Frowein school en de Selectaschool. Beide scholen maken deel uit van de Stichting Onderwijs der EBGS. Na een speech van President Robert Hahn van Rotary Club Paramaribo Residence (RCPR), waarin hij onder meer de aannemer, directievoerders en de projectgroep bedankte was het tijd voor de officiële overdracht van de toiletten groep en de onthulling van het Rotary bord. Tezamen met respectievelijk mevrouw Plet, directeur van de Selectaschool en de heer Yzer, directeur van de Froweinschool, verrichtte de heer Robert Hahn van de Rotary de onthullingshandeling. De President benadrukte dat onderhoud heel erg belangrijk is voor een lange levensduur. Als ondersteuning hierbij werd ook een onderhoudsplan overhandigd aan de beide directeuren. Docenten en leerlingen werden rondgeleid en waren allen onder de indruk van de nieuwe toiletten. Ze beloofden daarom ook de toiletten netjes te onderhouden.   |

Shaping Peace TogetherDe meeting van Donderdag 24 September stond in het teken van ‘World Peace Day’. Het thema van dit jaar is “Shaping Peace Together” De doelstellingen van het Peace project in het district worden gepresenteerd. Deze zijn onderverdeeld in 3 delen namelijk: “Peace in our communities, schools and homes”.
Tijdens de daaropvolgende 30 min durende breakout sessies moest elk van de 4 groepen antwoord geven op de volgende vragen/opdrachten: 1. Wat betekent “Peace” voor jou als individu (in 1 woord). 2. Vorm met de woorden van de werkgroep een zin om op die manier “Peace” te definiëren. 3. Hoe draag je “Peace” uit namens onze club en wat zijn de mogelijkheden om het te realiseren Na 30 minuten heeft elke groep een presentatie gegeven van hun visie en hun definitie van Peace. Tevens zijn ook de mogelijkheden om Peace uit te dragen als Rotary Club of Paramaribo Residence gepresenteerd.  |

Drive Thru Go GLO 2020De 19e editie van Go GLO welke op 10 September j.l. is gehouden was een daverend succes.  Geheel in "Corona proof" stijl hebben 301 leerlingen genoten van een geweldige middag. Vanaf half vier in de middag was er op het terrein van de Assuria Hermitage High Rise een "Drive Thru" Go GLO feest. De veelal prachtig versierde autos werden via een aantal HOTSPOTS voorzien van leuke pakketjes, hapjes, drankjes, de welbekende Go GLO tas en een certificaat. Voor de certificaat uitreiking waren onder andere de Minister van Onderwijs, Wetenschappen & Cultuur en de Minister van Defensie aanwezig, alsmede vertegenwoordigers van diverse sponsoren.   Dit jaar hadden wij een TOP 5! Allen met 68 punten voor de zeven vakken. * Leandro Banari van de O.S. Devisbuiten * Yuvraj Bihariesingh van de Mohamed Tausschool * Rigel Idu van de Vrije School * Sryan Jokhoe van het Nassy Brouwer College * Sarah Marhe van de O.S. Zinniaschool De top 5 werden toegesproken door Minister Marie Levens van Onderwijs, Wetenschappen & Cultuur. Hierna mocht elke top geslaagde een cheque van maar liefst SRD 1.000,00 in ontvangst nemen.  De school met de meeste Go GLO-ers is de Vrije School geworden met maar liefst 16 Go GLO-ers. Zij kregen ook een cheque overhandigd die besteed moet worden aan een schoolproject. Rotary Club of Paramaribo Residence mag samen met de sponsoren en deelnemers terugkijken op een zeer geslaagde en gezellige middag!

Go Glo FellowshipNa maanden hadden we weer een gezellige fellowship middag. Afgelopen donderdag 3 September 2020 was het weer tijd voor het inpakken van de GoGlo tassen. De fellows waren allemaal blij om gezamenlijk iets fysieks te kunnen doen voor ons signature project.   |

Peace and Conflict Resolution: Mw Kavita Parbhudayal Msc - Wethouder Zorg, Jeugd en Volksgezondheid Den Haag Afgelopen donderdag 30 juli 2020 heeft Mw. Kavita Parbhudayal Msc, wethouder Zorg, Jeugd en Volksgezondheid Den Haag een presentatie gehouden voor onze fellows over de aanpak van huiselijk geweld en kindermishandeling in Den Haag, Nederland. In de presentatie ging ze in op de opbouw van de zorgketen in Den Haag voor zowel preventie van huiselijk geweld en kindermishandeling, als tijdige signalering, advies en indien nodig interventie. De focus ligt op preventie en op het aanpakken van de risicofactoren om daarmee het geweld duurzaam te stoppen. Er is sprake van een multidisciplinaire aanpak, waarbij onder andere GGD, scholen, kinder- en vrouwenopvang een rol spelen. Er worden ook wijkteams ingezet die aan de hand van veiligheidsbeoordelingen en/of veiligheidsvoorwaarden de veiligheid in het gezin/huishouden waarborgen, waardoor zaken als lichamelijke en psychische schade bij gezinsleden kan worden voorkomen. Per jaar vinden ongeveer 1000 interventies plaats en zijn er ca 15.000 adviezen en meldingen. Middels de adviezen en meldingen krijgt men zicht op de veiligheid in het gezin en huishouden. Vervolgens wordt besloten bij welke instelling of professional de verantwoordelijkheid wordt gelegd voor het nemen van de vervolgstappen. Al met al is het een hele keten waarbij inzet van alle partners essentieel is. Gezien ook in Suriname huiselijk geweld meer aandacht nodig heeft, wordt gekeken naar een eventuele samenwerking met Suriname in de vorm van bijvoorbeeld trainingen.   |

Appreciation and Handing Over 2020-2021Op 25 juni 2020 vond de unieke Appreciation Night/ Board Handing-Over plaats van Rotary Club of Paramaribo Residence. Uniek, omdat deze vanwege Covid-19 via een zoom meeting moest plaatsvinden. Het werd desondanks een succesvolle en mooie avond, die begon met een welkomstwoord van President Steven Tjin A Djie. Hij bedankte alle fellows van de club voor hun bijdrage in welke vorm dan ook in het afgelopen bestuursjaar, wat gepaard ging met een daverend applaus!  |

Surinamers in het District Leadership Team 2020-2021Surinamers in het District Leadership Team 2020 - 2021 Het Rotary jaar 2020 -2021 is op 1 juli j.l. van start gegaan. Dat betekent dat overal ter wereld in elke Rotary Club een nieuwe President de leiding overneemt. Tevens krijgen we ook op Regionaal niveau een nieuwe District Governor, en wel dhr. Lisle Chase. Uiteraard is er ook een nieuwe Rotary International President dhr. Holger Knaack De District Governor ziet erop toe dat er binnen de Rotary missie en visie, diverse projecten binnen het District worden uitgevoerd. Tevens heeft de Governor een eigen “speciaal” project. Voor de coördinatie vanuit het District worden Rotarians uit de regio aangewezen. Dit jaar heeft Rotary Suriname, maar liefst 6 Rotarians die op districtsniveau leiding geven aan en/of participeren in de District 7030 Rotary teams. Op deze manier levert Rotary Suriname, niet alleen lokaal, maar ook regionaal en internationaal een actieve bijdrage aan de projecten van het District.

Afsluiting Rekenproject 2019/2020Van 18 t/m 22 mei zijn dagelijks van 09.00u tot 13.00u de laatste Rekenworkshops op de Louiseschool afgerond. Het was de afsluiting van het laatste deel van negen gehouden Rekenworkshops, die zijn gestart op 15 november 2019. Op 22 mei werd tevens de eind rekendidactische toets afgenomen, die van 09.15u tot 11.15u heeft geduurd. Het is een zeer succesvol project geworden en we zeggen hartelijk dank aan de commissie onder leiding van fellow Ewald Levens! |

Violence against ChildrenOp verzoek van onze District Governor Trevor Blake, werd gevraagd dit Rotary jaar extra aandacht te besteden aan het onderwerp "Violence against children". Aangezien dit ook in Suriname actueel is ging Chair Mario Merhai van committee Youth Service aan de slag en heeft de nadruk willen leggen op het pesten van kinderen. Er werd een mooie korte pakkende boodschap in gesproken door Jörgen Raymann, waarna deze met behulp van Graficom in een radiospotje werd gegoten. Partner in Service Wendy Merhai heeft zich ingezet om ervoor te zorgen dat het spotje gedurende 2 maanden op de verschillende radiostations te horen kan zijn. De radiostations hebben spontaan en enthousiast gereageerd en hebben de uitzendkosten gesponsord. Het spotje is reeds vanaf 18 mei 2020 te beluisteren en de tekst is alsvolgt: “No naki, ma taki….no kosi, ma bosi…. gi lobi, ma no fasi…joe pikin, uw kind, heeft recht op een veilige omgeving..thuis en op school… kinderen onderling horen elkaar niet te pesten en met elkaar te vechten… let op elkaar, let’s fight violence against children TOGETHER……dit is een boodschap van Rotary Club of Paramaribo Residence” Het is zeer goed ontvangen in de samenleving en wordt nu ook door andere instanties gedeeld op facebook! Donatie schoolmeubilairOp zondag 9 februari heeft de Rotary Club of Paramaribo Residence enkele lagere scholen in het binnenland van Suriname blij kunnen maken met nieuw schoolmeubilair. De meubelen zijn geschonken door de lagere school ‘de Veerkracht’ in Amsterdam West. De Rotaryclub heeft voor transport gezorgd naar Suriname en Atjoni waar de RKBO en EBGS de meubelen voor transport heeft overgenomen naar het binnenland. Het RCPR - RKBO RekentutorenprojectIn de trainingszaal van het Rooms Katholiek Bijzonder Onderwijs ( RKBO ) is op vrijdag 15 november de Rekentutoren training van start gegaan. Bij deze gelegenheid hebben Mw Anita Baidjnathpanday waarnemend directeur van het RKBO en de heer Steven Tjin A Djie president van de Rotary Club of Paramaribo Residence ( RCPR ) kort het woord gevoerd tot de participanten.   Mw Baidjnathpanday gaf aan dat het RKBO heel dankbaar is met deze onderwijs ondersteuning vanuit de RCPR, terwijl president Tjin A Djie die vergezeld was door de fellows Ineke Bendter en Yvonne Mohabier de leerkrachten voorhield wat de Rotary precies is en haar doelstelling. Het gezamenlijk RCPR – RKBO Project is geïnitieerd door Rotary Club of Paramaribo Residence ( RCPR ) in 2018 en wordt volledig ondersteund door het RKBO.   Het RCPR – RKBO Rekenproject gaat voor de tweede keer van start. Vorig jaar had dit project een pilot karakter waarbij ruim 45 leerkrachten met succes hebben deelgenomen aan de rekentraining. Na evaluatie is het project aangepast en dit jaar uitgemond in het Rekentutorenproject. |

November 14th: Amazing hands-on project in CommewijneOn November 10th the Rotary Club of Paramaribo Residence organized a hands-on diabetes outreach project to create awareness about Diabetes and to share their experience with the community. The outreach was held at Commewijne one of districts with a fairly high incidence of Diabetes in the community.

Mi Gudu Sunset Cruise – second edition: Rotated meetingAfgelopen donderdag 7 november 2019 was het weer zover. Een rotated "meeting" op de 'Mi Gudu'. Het heeft even wat moeite gekost om de fellows over te halen, maar om 17.30 u stapten we met ongeveer 40 mensen aan boord.
We werden ontvangen met een drankje, waarna de meeting startte. Na een korte meeting van President Steven Tjin A Djie was het tijd voor fellowship. Aan drank en spijs geen gebrek. Heerlijke bitterballen, moksi alesi, pom en pastei waren op het menu.
Ook hebben we genoten van het uitzicht. De sunset was prachtig en met een bubbles erbij was het een unieke ervaring.

De Oase, Marisa, Rotary Suriname Wandelloop en Health Beurs 2019Op zaterdag 19 oktober organiseerde Rotary Club of Paramaribo Residence o.a. samen met onze 2 zusterclubs, de Oase- Marisa- Rotary Suriname Wandelloop en Health Beurs 2019.  Dit in het kader van World Polio Day op 24 oktober 2019. Het was een groot succes met ongeveer 2500 deelnemers aan de wandelloop en heel veel activiteiten op de beurs, zoals het mogen meten van de bloeddruk en glucose. Ook zijn er interessante presentaties door verschillende medische specialisten gehouden. Onze fellows bemande de "smoothie" stand, waar er overheerlijke gezonde smoothies te verkrijgen waren. Informatie over Dyslexie en Autisme werd ook gegeven in de stand van Stichting Rotary Suriname voor Autisme en Dyslexie. Het gebruik van minder plastic werd ook bevorderd door de verkoop van "Bidons", die speciaal in het kader van World Polio Day zijn gemaakt. Onze enthousiaste fellows hebben zich enorm ingezet en natuurlijk was er ook tijd voor fun en fellowship! End Polio Now 5K Wandelloop & Healthy Lifestyle Beurs Op 24 Oktober a.s. is het World Polio Day. In het kader hiervan wordt er op 19 Oktober 2019 door Vereniging Oase, Optiek Marisa en Rotary Suriname de End Polio Now 5K Wandelloop & Healthy Lifestyle Beurs georganiseerd. Het doel van dit event is om awareness te creëren voor de eindstrijd tegen Polio en een gezonde leefstijl te promoten. Polio (myelitis) is een ernstige en besmettelijke infectieziekte, veroorzaakt door het poliovirus. De ziekte wordt ook wel kinderverlamming genoemd. Besmetting met poliomyelitis kan een dodelijke afloop hebben. Polio is in veel landen uitgeroeid vanwege diverse vaccinatieprogramma's. Echter komt het in sommige landen nog voor en is het van groot belang dat de awareness waarom kinderen op jonge leeftijd gevaccineerd dienen te worden actueel blijft. Rotary International is al meer dan 30 jaar een belangrijke partner in deze wereldwijde Polio eradication campagne: "End Polio now" en heeft in deze eindstrijd de hulp nodig van alle Surinamers. Om een gezonde levensstijl te promoten wordt er op 19 Oktober eveneens een Health Beurs georganiseerd waaraan meer dan 50 bedrijven hun medewerking hebben toegezegd. Rotary Suriname heeft als één van haar speerpunten het promoten van een gezonde levensstijl om hierdoor chronische ziekten te voorkomen. Voor het jaar 2019 is de focus op Diabetes gericht. Tijdens de Health beurs zal de bezoeker/wandelaar gebruik kunnen maken van de volgende diensten: # Gratis metingen (bloeddruk, BMI etc.) # Informatie van gerenomeerde dietisten tav een goed eetpatroon # Informatie en presentaties van verschillende medische specialisten zoals diabetes, hart- en vaatziekten, enz. # Massages # Informatie over alternatieve geneeswijzen # Verschillende sessies zoals YOGA, Aerobic en andere sportactiviteiten # Verkoop van gezonde snacks en smoothies .. En nog veel meer………. Er zal eveneens gefocust worden op de noodzaak voor een groene leefomgeving Het verminderen van het plastiek gebruik door de Surinaamse bevolking zal inhouden dat het milieu minder belast wordt, want een schoner milieu bevordert natuurlijk de healthy lifestyle. Go-Glo 2019Op 24 augustus 2019 heeft Rotary Club of Paramaribo Residence in samenwerking met Rotaract Club F.R.E.S.H. voor de 18e keer de jaarlijks terugkerende Go GLO huldigingsdag gehouden. Op deze dag zijn de best geslaagde GLO scholieren, die voor hun eind toets in totaal meer dan 60 punten hadden behaald voor 7 vakken, in het zonnetje gezet. Go GLO is een project dat in 2002 is gestart. Het project heeft als doel om de GLO scholieren te motiveren hun best te doen op school en om excellente prestaties te behalen. Hiermee wordt ook gedoeld op het verhogen van het slagingspercentage van het GLO en het verminderen van het aantal GLO schoolverlaters. Het Go GLO project bevordert ook fellowship, omdat bij de voorbereiding en op de huldigingsdag de fellows samenkomen, om er een succesvolle Go GLO huldigingsdag van te maken. |

Joint Rotated Meeting bij Assuria High RiseOp dinsdag 6 Augustus 2019 heeft de Rotary Suriname een gezamenlijke meeting gehouden in het in aanbouw zijnde Assuria High Rise aan de Recolaan. De fellows konden voor het starten van de meeting genieten van het uitzicht die het gebouw biedt vanuit de hoogste verdieping wat een waar genoegen was!   |

Afsluiting RCPR-RKBO Reken Pilot Project 2018-2019Op maandag 22 Juli 2019 werd de afsluiting het joint Reken Pilot Project 2018-2019 van de Rotary Club of Paramaribo Residence en het Rooms-Katholiek Basis Onderwijs gehouden in de bovenzaal van het Waag Gebouw. Dit Reken Project, die gestart is in het bestuursjaar 2018-2019, had als doel om de leraren van de 6e klas GLO te ondersteunen in het beter begrijpen van de reken onderwerpen die de leerlingen moeten kennen voor de GLO toets middels een didactische training. Dit zou dan ook indirect moeten bijdragen aan een betere prestatie van de leerlingen tijdens de toets.  |

RCPR Handing Over CeremonieOp zaterdag 29 juni heeft de Rotary Club of Paramaribo Residence het Rotary jaar 2018-19 op een feestelijke manier afgesloten. Na een persoonlijk ontvangst en een respectvolle 1 minuut stilte voor de leden van de Rotaryfamily die ons zijn voorgegaan heeft President Clyde Cairo ‘het jaar in beeld’ gepresenteerd. Een kleurrijk overzicht met vele foto’s. Een fantastische mijlpaal is dat de club zowel de Public Image citation als de Rotary citation met Presidential distinction heeft behaald. Ook onze Rotaractclub FRESH mocht met het behalen van hun presidential citation niet ontbreken.

Eind Workshop Perisur Rotary Global Grant ProjectEind workshop Perisur Rotary Global Grant project In de periode maart 2017 tot en met maart 2019 hebben Rotary Club Paramaribo Residence en Stichting Perisur, met ondersteuning van Rotary Club Leiden en The Rotary Foundation, het Perisur Rotary Global Grant project “Preparing for Life” uitgevoerd. Het doel van het project is het ontwikkelen en implementeren van perinatale interventies in Suriname, die gericht zijn op het verbeteren van geboorte-uitkomsten, op gezonde zwangerschappen en op een gezonde start voor de pasgeboren baby’s. Binnen deze doelstelling heeft het project zich gericht op twee thema’s:
Op zaterdag 11 mei heeft de eindworkshop van het Perisur Rotary Global Grant project plaatsgevonden in het Waaggebouw. Aan de workshop hebben vertegenwoordigers van verschillende organisaties deelgenomen waaronder: de ziekenhuizen in Paramaribo, de Regionale Gezondheidsdienst, Stichting Lobi, Mr. Dr. J.C. de Miranda Lyceum, Ministerie van Volksgezondheid, BOG, Ronny Aloema Foundation, PAHO, Rotary Club of Paramaribo Residence, Rotary Club of Paramaribo, Rotaract club FRESH, Stichting Perisur en verschillende media bedrijven. Na de presentaties van het educatief programma door mevr. Mahalia Breidel van Stichting Lobi en Het SamenZwanger boek door Griselda Vliet-van der Leeuw, werd het eerste SamenZwanger boek overhandigd aan de Rotary.

Op donderdag 9 mei heeft de Rotary club van Paramaribo Residence hun meeting gehad in het nieuwe gebouw van Assuria. Op de agenda stond een rondleiding van dit prachtige gebouw, een kort achtergrond verhaal van Assuria door fellow Mario en een presentatie van het technisch gedeelte van het gebouw door fellow Oliver van FIRM engineering. Gastheer Mario heeft voor een warm ontvangst gezorgd.

RCPR Rotary FamilydayOp zaterdag 13 april waren we met een gezellige groep aanwezig te Acaribo voor de RCPR Rotary Familyday. Het was een leuke dag vol fun, enorm veel food en fellowship. Ook de kinderen hebben volop genoten. Het was heerlijk nababbelen bij een warm kampvuur in de donkere avonduurtjes. De Familyday was goed voorbereid door Elviera, Audrey en Jerrel. Een klein bloemetje als blijk van dank en waardering voor onze geweldige gastvrouw Gloria mocht niet ontbreken.

RCPR - 597 Oso FesaRCPR 597 Oso Fesa Op 6 april was de Fundraisingsactiviteit “597 Oso Fesa” van RCPR in de ballroom van Torarica. De bedoeling van het fundraisingsproject was om financien en middelen te vergaren voor enkele sanitatieprojecten op lagere scholen in Suriname. Jonge kinderen gaan onder erbarmelijke omstandigheden naar school en worden omringd door niet hygienische omstandigheden tijdens hun ontwikkeling. Het is de missie van de Rotary club of Paramaribo Residence om hier samen met partners en vrienden, school voor school, op langer termijn verbetering in aan te brengen. Het was een geslaagd evenement met muziek van dj Danny Play, South South West en dj Cat. De avond werd afgesloten met een loterij.

Kick off Go GLO te H.P.G. LatourschoolKick off Go GLO te H. P. G. Latourschool “Ready Steady… Go GLO!”. Zo klonk het vrijdag, 5 april, onder de zesde klassers van de H.P.G. Latourschool. Hier stopte de Go GLO Caravan van Rotary Club Paramaribo Residence, voor het houden van een motivatie sessie voor de leerlingen van de zesde klas. Het vorig jaar is er van deze school voor het eerst een Go Glo-er afgeleverd. Dit jaar is er besloten om de kick off Go Glo op deze school te beginnen om de school te stimuleren om meer Go GLO-ers af te leveren. De leerlingen werden door enkele Rotarians en motivational speakers toegesproken en gemotiveerd om hard hun best te doen op school, om zodoende ook deel te zijn van Go GLO. Go GLO is een jaarlijks terugkerend evenement georganiseerd door Rotary Club Paramaribo Residence met ondersteuning van Rotaract Club F.R.E.S.H. Go GLO wordt dit jaar voor de 18de keer uitgevoerd en heeft als doel excellente prestaties onder de GLO leerlingen te bevorderen. De leerlingen die excellente prestaties hebben gehaald worden hiervoor beloond.

Suriname wint 9 medailles tijdens Special Olympics QuatarSuriname wint 9 medailles tijdens Special Olympics Quatar De Surinaamse delegatie die momenteel deelneemt aan de Olympische Spelen voor mensen met een beperking heeft al negen medailles gewonnen, waaronder twee gouden plakken. Bij de Spelen in Abudabi en Dubai in Quatar won Donnegey Saite bij de mannen goud op het onderdeel 50 m schoolslag bij zwemmen. Bij turnen op het onderdeel vaulting liet Samora Ligeon zich ook niet onbetuigd bij de vrouwen en legde beslag op de gouden plak. Op de evenwichtsbalk en bij floor excercise won Ligeon respectievelijk brons en zilver. Lansky Kuijper won zilver op de parallel bars bij turnen. Ook bij kogelstoten liet Suriname zich niet onbetuigd. Juande Vrede werd daar tweede en won zo een zilveren medaille, terwijl Rachel Veldkamp op het onderdeel 50 meter schoolslag zwemmen brons won. Dennis Muskiet, één van de turncoaches, stelt vanuit Quatar dat de sfeer in de delegatie heel goed is. “Natuurlijk willen we meer, maar tot nu toe zijn we tevreden over de medailleoogst”, zegt Muskiet. De delegatie vertrekt op 21 maart uit Quatar om met een tussenstop in Amsterdam, Nederland, daags daarna huiswaarts te keren. Vanuit de samenleving is een financiële bijdrage geleverd, zodat de afvaardiging naar de Spelen mogelijk werd.Bedrijven zoals Staatsolie en Digicel hebben een forse donatie gedaan, terwijl een groep jongeren met het organiseren van een Cook-Out ook geld heeft ingezameld voor de sporters. |

Peace Project - Vredevolle DiscussieavondPeace Project - Vredevolle Discussieavond De maand februari is uitgeroepen tot de maand van ‘World Understanding Month’/ ‘Peace and Conflict Prevention/ Resolution’. Hiermee wordt het heugelijk feit gevierd dat Rotary International is opgericht op 23 februari 1905. In verband hiermee heeft de Rotary Club of Paramaribo Residence op donderdag 28 februari, een discussieavond georganiseerd waarbij drie religieuze leiders zijn ingegaan op vraagstukken uit de samenleving. De vraagstelling was: Draagt het geloof bij aan het vergroten van vrede in de moderne samenleving? De gastsprekers van de avond waren: Het christendom - Dominee Marjory Slagtand gehuwd Abendanon Het Hindoeïsme - Acharya Varun Mahtabsing De Islam - Imam Samseerali Sheikh-Alibaks Voorafgaand aan de discussie werden onze sprekers door discussieleider Margriet van Dijk geh. Nouh Chaia geïntroduceerd. Hun rijkdom aan spirituele kennis en werkervaring was erg indrukwekkend. Onze gastsprekers hadden zich met volle toewijding voorbereid om middels deze avond een goede bijdrage te mogen leveren in het verkrijgen van inzicht in religiën met als uitkomst het bereiken van vrede en begrip voor elkaar. Ondanks de pittige vragen overheerste de harmonie welke een basis legde voor een veilig gevoel waarbij een ieder in de vrijheid werd gesteld om stellingen en misverstanden uit onze samenleving te bespreken. Deze respectvolle, mooie discussie werd afgesloten met een korte samenvatting door president Clyde waarbij certificaten van dank werden overhandigd aan de gastsprekers. Er is flink gebruik gemaakt van de gelegenheid tot nababbelen onderling en met onze gastsprekers waarbij ook onze vice president Steven Tjin A Djie met zijn verjaardag is gefeliciteerd. Op een serene en gezellige manier is deze mooie avond afgesloten.

De fellows van RCPR zitten niet stil en doen op verschillende en creatieve manieren hun bijdrage aan de samenleving(en). De stichting Ramila en Ramayan foundation zijn op uitnodiging van het Ayodhia Research Institute naar India afgereisd. Diverse optredens en workshops zijn in de periode van 28 januari tot 9 februari gegeven. Het Ayodhia research center ligt in de stad Ayodhia, de geboorteplaats van Sri Ram, van de hindoe epos Ramayan. Het instituut doet onderzoek naar alles over Sri Ram en heeft zelfs een museum in de stad Ayodhia opgezet waarbij de gehele samenleving hun kennis over Sri Ram kan verrijken.
De toneelgroep van Ramilia team, waarvan onze fellow Sila deel van uitmaakt, heeft met ondersteuning van het Directoraat Cultuur, Suriname op een waardige manier vertegenwoordigd. Optredens zijn gegeven in Pragyaraj, bij de Kumb Mela, de grootste hindoe gathering van 120 miljoen mensen. De groep heeft meerdere malen de kranten gehaald met hun unieke optredens.

De 'Chinese Ambassadors 10K Swim Event' 2019 is een 10km lange open water zwemwedstrijd in de Suriname Rivier vanuit het privé terrein van dhr. Ramkelawan nabij de Pararivier naar de Marine trap in Paramaribo. Dit event werd gehouden op 10 februari 2018. Er hebben gemiddeld 100 zwemmers meegedaan in de Open Klasse en diverse Masters Klassen. Fellow Karen Wong Fong San naam ook deel en eindigde op de 2 plaats in de Vrouwenklasse 45-54.

Op woensdag 30 januari 2019 is een RCPR Grootbestuursmeeting gehouden met de District Governor van het District 7030, Dominique Venere. In deze interactieve presentatie heeft de Rotary Club de projecten kunnen belichten waar zij mee bezig is. Ook zijn er twee projectfilmpjes van GoGLO en de Sanitatieprojecten vertoond. Beide zijn enkele signature projects van RCPR. De DG was zeer tevreden met de professionele inzet van de club in de uitvoering van haar projecten en complimenteerde ook de fellowshipactivities. De meeting werd afgesloten met de overhandiging van het jaarplan, kleine clubbanner en kadootje. Daarna heeft de groep kunnen genieten van een heerlijke Surinaamse lunch.

Op woensdag 30 januari 2019 is in de Ballroom van Hotel Torarica een jointmeeting van de drie zusterclubs in Suriname gehouden ter gelegenheid van het bezoek van de District Governor van het District 7030, Dominique Venere.
De avond werd voorgezeten door de drie presidents van de Rotary Clubs en geleid door de MC Guido Koorndijk. Na haar introductie door AG Joseph Nouh-Chaia is DG Dominique ingegaan op haar doelstellingen en haar ervaringen met de Surinaamse Clubs. Het bestrijden van ‘Illiteracy’ en focussen op de ontwikkeling van jonge kinderen zijn twee van haar grote speerpunten. Zij is erg tevreden over de projecten die in Suriname worden uitgevoerd en feliciteert de clubs met hun inzet en saamhorigheid. Uiteraard heeft zij een ieder wederom uitgenodigd voor de District Conference welke in April zal worden gehouden in Guadeloupe. Het wordt een conference dat i.s.m. de Rotaractors zal worden uitgevoerd. Een andere gastspreker was de District Rotaract Representative, Delon Earle die de DG op haar bezoek naar Suriname heeft vergezeld. Hij gaf aan erg blij te zijn met de samenwerking tussen Rotarians, Rotaractors en Interactors en kijkt ernaar uit een ieder te ontmoeten op de komende district conferentie.
Op deze byzondere meeting is ook Charline Stein als Rotarian officieel welkom geheten en gepind door de District Governor. Zij was bestuurslid in de oprichting en het jaar daarop President van de Rotaractclub of F.R.E.S.H.
De avond werd spontaan en gezellig afgesloten met dansen op de muziek van de band bestaande uit veelal Surinaamse Rotaractors.

Nieuw AK-stadion stap dichterbij door financiering India

De bouw van een nieuw AK-internationaal voetbalstadion kan worden gerealiseerd met financiële steun van de Indiase regering. Dit bleek tijdens een beleefdheidsbezoek aan de ambassadeur van India die Rajen Pahladsingh en John Krishnadath, beiden lid van het SVB-team dat financieringsmogelijkheden uitzoekt voor dit project.
In het gesprek met de ambassadeur Mahender Singh Kanyal kwam naar voren dat de Indiase overheid bereid is de bouw van een nieuw AK stadion te financieren tegen zeer gunstige voorwaarden, zoals een lening van vijf jaar of langer met een aflossingsvrije periode en een rente van 3% of minder. Uitvoering van dit project wordt door India gekwalificeerd als een 'Landmark project for India in Suriname'.
Andere mogelijkheden tot financiering via de EXIM bank of India zouden ook open staan, zij het tegen minder gunstige voorwaarden dan via de creditline van US$ 80 miljoen, die India in juni 2018 aan Suriname aanbood.

Rekenproject RCPR / RKBO
Op vrijdag 18 maart is het tweede kwartaal van het joint rekenproject van de RCPR / RKBO van start gegaan. De prettige en leergierige sfeer in de grote groep van leerkrachten en trainers die vrijwillig aan dit project meedoen getuigt van passie voor kinderen en educatie! Het project omvat 6 workshops van 4,5 uur die verspreid over de drie kwartalen van het schooljaar gegeven zullen worden. Aan het eind van elk kwartaal vindt er een evaluatie plaats. Het doel dat RCPR met dit project wil bereiken is rekendidactische vaardigheden bij de deelnemende leerkrachten ontwikkelen om betere rekenresultaten te halen bij de eindtoets GLO. Mark Daniel Maloney selected to be 2019-20 Rotary president
Mark Daniel Maloney, of the Rotary Club of Decatur, Alabama, USA, is the selection of the Nominating Committee for President of Rotary International for 2019-20. He will be declared the president-nominee on 1 October if no challenging candidates have been suggested.
“The clubs are where Rotary happens,” says Maloney, an attorney. He aims to support and strengthen clubs at the community level, preserve Rotary’s culture as a service-oriented membership organization, and test new regional approaches for growth.
“With the eradication of polio, recognition for Rotary will be great and the opportunities will be many,” he says. “We have the potential to become the global powerhouse for doing good.”
Maloney is a principal in the law firm of Blackburn, Maloney, and Schuppert LLC, with a focus on taxation, estate planning, and agricultural law. He represents large farming operations in the Southeastern and Midwestern United States, and has chaired the American Bar Association’s Committee on Agriculture in the section of taxation. He is a member of the American Bar Association, Alabama State Bar Association, and the Alabama Law Institute.
He has been active in Decatur’s religious community, chairing his church’s finance council and a local Catholic school board. He has also served as president of the Community Foundation of Greater Decatur, chair of Morgan County Meals on Wheels, and director of the United Way of Morgan County and the Decatur-Morgan County Chamber of Commerce.
A Rotarian since 1980, Maloney has served as an RI director; Foundation trustee and vice chair; and aide to 2003-04 RI President Jonathan Majiyagbe. He also has participated in the Council on Legislation as chair, vice chair, parliamentarian, and trainer. He was an adviser to the 2004 Osaka Convention Committee and chaired the 2014 Sydney Convention Committee.
Prior to serving as a district governor, Maloney led a Group Study Exchange to Nigeria.
He also served as Future Vision Committee vice chair; Foundation training institute moderator; Foundation permanent fund national adviser; member of the Peace Centers Committee; and adviser to the Foundation’s Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene in Schools Target Challenge Committee.
Maloney’s wife, Gay, is an attorney in the same law firm, and a member and past president of the Rotary Club of Decatur Daybreak, Alabama, USA. Both Mark and Gay are Paul Harris Fellows, Major Donors, and Bequest Society members.

Het thema van het Rotary fiscaal jaar is: Be the inspiration.
De betekenis van inspiration, inspiratie kunnen we omschrijven als: bezieling, goddelijke ingeving.
We naderen het Kerstfeest, een feest van christenen, een feest van lichtjes, overwinning. Elke religie gedenkt op enig moment in het jaar de overwinning van het licht op de duisternis.
Ook vandaag staan we hierbij stil.

WYCCF and Rotary donate fundus camera to SMMC eye care clinic

CAY HILL--White and Yellow Cross Care Foundation (WYCCF) and Rotary Club of St. Martin Sunrise jointly presented a portable fundus camera to the newly opened St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC) ophthalmology clinic on Friday, December 7.
Rotary Club of St. Martin Sunrise initiated the purchase of the camera.
During the presentation, SMMC’s ophthalmologist Dr. Jerrel Pawiroredjo from Suriname, who is assisting SMMC with its newly opened eye care clinic, explained that he first visited St. Maarten in 2015 on the request of Rotary Club of St. Martin Sunrise. He was asked to install the then-newly-purchased fundus camera at WYCCF to start preventative screening activities for residents who suffer from diabetes and/or hypertension.
Rotary Club of St. Martin Sunrise then-President Dr. Virginia Asin initiated this. A physician herself and then working at the Ministry of Public Health Department of Collective Prevention Services in St. Maarten, Asin saw the importance of screening and early detection of eye problems.
When Pawiroredjo met with local stakeholders he realised there was no ophthalmology clinic on the Dutch side, which amazed him, as the prevalence of secondary complications from diabetes and hypertension (such as preventable blindness) was high. This triggered his first conversations with SMMC to research the possibilities of collaboration between St. Maarten and Suriname to set up quality ophthalmology services here in the country.
Rotary Club of St. Martin Sunrise President Valda Hazel stated that the club is extremely proud of the donation of the fundus camera to SMMC’s ophthalmology clinic.
“It shows how the project for a vital piece of medical equipment was the first trigger that later on resulted in full, high quality ophthalmology services being available locally, which is so important for the population of St. Maarten,” WYCCF and the Rotary Club said in a joint statement on Wednesday.
WYCCF representative Bregje Boetekees explained that the fundus camera fits best within the eye clinic at SMMC, where screening can now be done by a technical ophthalmology assistant (TOA). The camera operates painlessly and takes a picture of the inside of the eye, showing the optical nerve and blood vessels.
As diabetes and hypertension can cause damage to the nerve and blood vessels, early detection of such damage leads to early treatment, which will prevent far-reaching problems such as loss of vision.
Rotary International observes a different theme each month and each club throughout the Rotary world is encouraged to concentrate on programmes and projects to promote each of these months. December is observed as Disease Prevention and Treatment Month, and the camera donated ties in with the monthly theme.
Members of Rotary Club of St. Martin Sunrise continue with its service to humanity, the statement said.

Rifka Kasnan was een Stuka kid van de eerste groep, gestart in 2006 en afgesloten in 2009. Met de eerste groep begonnen we in de vierde klas van de lagere school en Rifka was toen leerling van de Cleviaschool.
Nu is ze 23 jaar oud, heeft de muloschool afgemaakt (Muloschool Geyersvlijt) en heeft daarna op het CPI haar opleiding als leerkracht (De nieuwe leerkracht) gevolgd en succesvol afgerond.
We hebben Rifka ontmoet tijdens het Joint rekenproject RKBO/RCPR als leerkracht van de zesde klas van de St. Aloysiusschool, die ook meedoet aan dit project.
Het gaat goed met Rifka en we zijn blij dat we haar weer ontmoet hebben en mochten verwelkomen in een Rotary project.

Publicatie oplevering sanitatie project L.D. Akselschool
Officiële Opening Toilettengroep L.D. Akselschool
Een van de ‘focus areas’ van de Rotary is gezond drinkwater en sanitatie. In dit kader heeft de Rotary Club of Paramaribo Residence (RCPR) reeds op enkele lagere scholen de toilettengroepen vernieuwd. Middels dit project probeert RCPR de schoolleiders te ondersteunen door de leeromgeving voor kinderen gezonder en hygiënischer te maken.
Ook op de L.D. Akselschool onder leiding van het schoolhoofd mevrouw N. Dixon en Rotarian Eddy Fränkel is de toilettengroep gerenoveerd en heeft vanmorgen de officiële opening plaatsgevonden. Zowel de kinderen als de leerkrachten waren erg enthousiast en opgelucht. De Rotary Club of Paramaribo Residence heeft nog 37 andere lagere scholen in Paramaribo geïdentificeerd die een dringende behoefte hebben aan het herstel of verbouwing van hun toilettengroepen.
Door middel van fundraisingsactiviteiten en het aanvragen van Grants in samenwerking met meerdere Rotary Clubs stelt RCPR het zich als doel om deze behoeftige scholen zo spoedig mogelijk van goed drinkwater en hygiënische sanitatie te voorzien.

RCPR Srefidensi Boottrip op de ‘Mi Gudu’
Op donderdag 22 november heeft de Rotary Club of Paramaribo Residence een fantastische srefidensi met elkaar kunnen vieren. In vrolijke Surinaamse kleuren begon de afvaart aan de marinetrap onder eerbiedig gezang van het Surinaams volkslied. En bij de eerstevolgende golfslagen hebben wij met z’n allen van een prachtige zonsondergang kunnen genieten. De avond werd met goede dansmuziek, leuke groupfie’s en heerlijk eten nog veel gezelliger. Met plezier is de vaart een beetje verlengd en meerden we al zingend en dansend weer bij de kade aan tegen half tien.
Namens de gehele club heeft President Clyde hartelijk dank gezegd aan de organiserende leden van dit leuke evenement. Elviera Jessurun, Audrey Lim A Po en Jules de Vries.
Kick off Joint RCPR/RKBO Rekenproject
Op maandag 12 november vond de kick off plaats van Rekenstruikelblokken, een gezamenlijk project van RKBO (Rooms Katholiek Bijzonder Onderwijs) en Rotary Club Paramaribo Residence. Namens het RKBO heette mevrouw Abia, Onderwijs manager RKBO, de 45 deelnemers welkom en President Clyde Cairo richtte namens RCPR het woord tot de aanwezigen. Namens het bestuur waren ook treasurer Brenda en sergeant at arms Roberto bij de opening. De gezamenlijke commissie van dit project bestaat uit drie trainers van RKBO te weten Ellen Gaddum, Jane Chang en Marjory San-A-Jong. Namens RCPR zitten in de commissie fellow Ewald Levens (voorzitter, tevens trainer), Robert Hahn en Ineke Bendter-Adams.
Het project omvat 6 workshops van 4,5 uur die verspreid over de drie kwartalen van het schooljaar gegeven zullen worden. Aan het eind van elk kwartaal vindt er een evaluatie plaats. Het doel dat RCPR met dit project wil bereiken is rekendidactische vaardigheden bij de deelnemende leerkrachten ontwikkelen om betere rekenresultaten te halen bij de eindtoets GLO. RCPR besteedt met het GoGlo-project al jaren aandacht aan leerlingen die een excellente prestatie leveren bij de GLO-toets. Met dit rekenproject wil onze club bijdragen aan een beter rendement van de rekencijfers op de GLO-toets en daarmee een beter slagings resultaat voor de zesde-klassers.
Aan deze eerste workshop namen 45 zesde klas-leerkrachten afkomstig van 20 RKBO-scholen enthousiast deel. De trainers hadden opgaven voorbereid over de domeinen breuken en kommagetallen. In vijf groepen werkten de deelnemers de opdrachten uit en elke groep presenteerde een aantal uitwerkingen plenair. De overige deelnemers mochten vragen stellen/commentaar leveren en de trainers gaven feedback en tips. Aan het eind van de workshop evalueerden de trainers samen met de deelnemers de inhoud van deze eerste trainingsdag en de deelnemers gaven te kennen dat ze vooral erg veel aan tips voor het oplossen van breuksommen hadden gehad. Voor de handouts met de uitwerkingen van alle sommen waren ze zeer dankbaar. De directeur van het RKBO, mevrouw Baidjnath Panday, sloot deze eerste workshopdag af. Ze motiveerde de leerkrachten de opgedane kennis toe te passen en zich verder te ontwikkelen. Vanaf de tweede workshop zal er in twee groepen gewerkt worden, omdat de afwezigheid van beide leerkrachten van de zesde klassen een te zware wissel trekt op de scholen; er was de eerste dag sprake van onderbemensing op bepaalde scholen. De verdeling in twee groepen van 24 deelnemers brengt als voordeel met zich mee dat er meer individuele aandacht kan zijn voor de leerkrachten en ook krijgen de groepen meer ruimte om te zitten. De sponsoren van de consumptie op de workshops zijn de fellows Oscar Cambel en Steven Tjin A Djie. Het rekenproject is gestart en de commissie mag terugkijken op een goede eerste aanzet met volgens de leerkrachten direct toepasbaar resultaat.

1e Dinnermeeting

Op zaterdag 27 oktober hadden wij onze eerste dinnermeeting met de club. Vanwege het beperkte budget moesten we als cie onze creativiteit aanwenden en besloten we te kiezen voor een POTLUCK meeting. Het woord Potluck zorgde al voor de nodige verwarring en hilariteit, omdat het niet een dagelijks gebruikte omschrijving is. Na raadpleging van Van dale en Google voor een correcte uitleg werd dat omschreven als zijnde een samenkomst, waarbij er door elk de aanwezigen een gerecht wordt gebracht ( homemade) voldoende voor het aantal aanwezigen. Om de gerechten in stijl te houden kozen we voor het thema mediterranean oftewel gerechten uit de landen rond de middellandse zee. Vanwege de vele fellows die helaas uitlandig waren en anderen die reeds andere activiteiten hadden gepland was de opkomst minder groot maar zeker niet minder gezellig! Uiteindelijk leken er meer gerechten op tafel dan fellows aanwezig!
De meeting werd gestart met het bedanken van gastvrouw Audrey en PIS middels een bloemetje, die echt letterlijk alles uit de kast heeft gehaald. Bij de mededelingen kwam er een onverwachte goede discussie op gang over het reken project en ook over onze fundrasingsactiviteit van 27 december a.s. Een toast op de jarigen van de afgelopen week w.o fellow Robert onze pres Clyde en sec Margriet mocht zeker niet ontbreken. Het werd een gezellige boel daarna met al het eten. Voorgerecht, hoofdgerecht en nagerechten z.a. Pompoensoep, Paellea, Aardappelsalade, Couscous, Pastas, Shoarma Romansalade, Garden salade, Sates etc. Fellow Reina trakteerde daarnaast nog vanwege haar nieuwkomerschap op een heerlijke homemade fijne bojo. Verschillende soorten wijnen en een heerlijke Sangria ontbraken ook niet. Tussen al het eten, babbelen en lachen door gaf fellow Waddy ons ook een voorproefje van het Rotary spel (die uitgesteld is).Fellow Manodj toonde daar een geduchte tegenstander te zullen worden vanwege de vele goede antwoorden. Kortom een informatieve, leerrijke en vreselijk gezellige avond, waarbij fellow Ineke het al heeft gezegd wie er niet was heeft gemist. Wij als cie bedanken iedereen die een bijdrage heeft geleverd m.n. de spontane koks! Deze avond heeft weer gezorgd voor de nodige uitdagingen en wie weet leidt dit tot een volgende kook “batlle” !

Sushil Kumar Gupta, of the Rotary Club of Delhi Midwest, Delhi, India, is the selection of the Nominating Committee for President of Rotary International for 2020-21. He will be declared the president-nominee on 1 October if no challenging candidates have been suggested.
Gupta wants to increase Rotary’s humanitarian impact as well as the diversity of its membership.
“As individuals, we can only do so much,” Gupta said in a statement. “But when 1.2 million Rotarians work together, there is no limit to what we can achieve, and in the process, we can truly change the world.”
Gupta has been a Rotarian since 1977 and has served Rotary as district governor, training leader, and resource group adviser, and as a member, vice chair, or chair of several committees.
He was awarded an honorary Doctor of Science degree by the IIS University, Jaipur, in recognition of his contributions to water conservation.
He has also received the coveted Padma Shri Award, the fourth-highest civilian award in India, conferred by the president of India for distinguished service to tourism and social work.
Gupta has also received the Distinguished Service Award from The Rotary Foundation for his support of its humanitarian and educational programs. He and his wife, Vinita, are Major Donors to The Rotary Foundation and members of the Arch Klumph Society.
Gupta is chair and managing director of Asian Hotels (West) Ltd., and owner of Hyatt Regency Mumbai and JW Marriott Hotel New Delhi Aerocity. He has served as president of the Federation of Hotel and Restaurant Associations of India and on the board of directors of Tourism Finance
Corporation of India Ltd. He is the president of Experience India Society, a public-private partnership between the tourism industry and the government of India that promotes India as a tourist destination. He is also vice chair of the Himalayan Environment Trust and serves on the board of
Operation Eyesight Universal in India.

Turning teens away from crime
Rotary clubs in Canada invest in the PACT program, an urban peace initiative that aims to break the cycle of youth crime

Akeem Stephenson wanted to go to jail. He believed it was the only way he could free himself from a life of crime — a life he desperately wanted to change.
After being arrested for a fourth time more than 10 years ago, for aggravated robbery, the teenager in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, was set to go to prison. But the judge saw something in Stephenson that suggested that he could redeem himself. So he gave Stephenson a choice: participate in an 18-month youth program, or serve the six-month sentence.
For Stephenson, the choice was clear. He decided to transform his life through the PACT Urban Peace Program.
PACT, which stands for Participation, Acknowledgement, Commitment, and Transformation, is a Toronto-based, award-winning charity supported by Rotary clubs in Canada. It works with at-risk young people and those who have committed crimes to change their direction in life. Entrepreneur and Toronto Rotary member David Lockett co-founded the program more than 20 years ago.
The intensive, step-by-step program aims to break the cycle of poverty and criminal behavior. Its goal is to determine what the participants need and develop strategies “to put them on a positive path in their life, so they can enrich not only their own lives, but their community,” says Lockett, a member of the Rotary E-Club of Social Innovators D7090.
Lockett says PACT builds peace in urban communities. “It’s all about looking at the impact of violence and criminal behavior, and understanding the dynamics of the problem, and creating highly effective solutions to make investments for at-risk youth at an early stage,” he says. “It’s really quite simple. If you want to help at-risk youth, you really have to understand the simple needs they have.”
He acknowledges that young people who commit crimes should be held accountable, and for many of them, that includes serving jail time. But for some, those he says come from “squalid and deplorable backgrounds” with very little parental guidance, PACT is a resource that can change their lives and reduce the likelihood that they will commit more crimes.
The organization works with the judicial system to identify repeat offenders ages 12-19 who may benefit from the program. After a young adult is convicted of a crime, the judge or judicial official refers them to PACT as part of a probation order.

On 15 August, 2018, Rotary announced nearly $100 million in grants to support the global effort to end polio, a vaccine-preventable disease that once paralyzed hundreds of thousands of children each year.
The announcement comes as Nigeria marks two years without any reported cases of wild poliovirus, following four reported cases in 2016.
“The fact that no new cases of wild poliovirus have been detected in Nigeria points to the improved surveillance and rapid response protocols Rotary and its Global Polio Eradication Initiative partners have established, particularly in insecure and inaccessible areas,” said Michael K. McGovern, chair of Rotary’s International PolioPlus Committee. “While this progress is promising, it’s time to redouble our efforts so we can continue to maintain the political and financial support necessary to end polio for good.”
While significant strides have been made against the paralyzing disease, wild poliovirus is still a threat in parts of the world, with 10 cases in Afghanistan and three cases in Pakistan this year so far. As long as a single child has polio, all children are at risk, which underscores the need for ongoing funding and political commitment to eradication.
To support polio eradication efforts in countries where polio remains endemic, Rotary is allocating the majority of the funds it announced today to Afghanistan ($22.9 million), Pakistan ($21.7 million), and Nigeria ($16.1 million).
Further funding will support efforts to keep 12 vulnerable African countries polio-free:

Africa will also see $5.8 million in funding for surveillance activities and $467,800 for technical assistance. Additional funding will go to Bangladesh ($504,200), Indonesia ($157,800), Myanmar ($197,200), and Nepal ($160,500), with an additional $96,300 funding surveillance in Southeast Asia. The remainder of the funding ($6.6 million) will go to the World Health Organization (WHO) for research activities.
Rotary has committed to raising $50 million a year to be matched 2-to-1 by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, yielding $450 for polio eradication activities over a three-year period. To date, Rotary has contributed more than $1.8 billion to fight the disease, including matching funds from the Gates Foundation, and countless volunteer hours since launching its polio immunization program, PolioPlus, in 1985. In 1988, Rotary became a core partner in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative with the WHO, UNICEF, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The Gates Foundation later joined. Since the initiative launched, the incidence of polio has plummeted by more than 99.9 percent, from about 350,000 cases in 1988 to 22 confirmed in 2017.
