many Saturday's to complete. The finished project looks great!
The last .01% is going to be a challenge. An irate next door neighbor says she has lost 3 inches of her yard
and wants the fence moved. She wouldn't listen to the argument that her property value has increased because of the upgrade next door to her. Only in Davis...All in all, it looks great and a lot of good fellowship was had by all who participated.

Vic Bucher
Happy Holidays, fellow Rotarians! We opened the last meeting of 2014 with Christmas songs accompanied on the ukulele and acoustical guitar, played by Riley & Frank from the Montgomery School choir. The songfest was mainly for the kids present. Members who brought their children included: Keith Watenpaugh, Nathalie Minya Mukome, Steve Short, Andrew Newman, Matt Dolcini, Mark Pratt, Mark Drabkin, and Mitch Mysliwiec. The kids, and the rest of the room all sang Rudolph, and Jingle Bells and Feliz Navidad, etc.. Thanks to Riley & Frank for their fun Christmas introduction.
We welcomed a visiting Rotarian, Rubin Winkle, an attorney from Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic. He presented to our Club in behalf of his Club, a ceramic plate sporting meringue dancers, and a bottle of Dominican wine.
And we welcomed back to our Club, Andrew Yang, from an extended trip to his native Singapore.
Then we dove right into Happy Bucks. Jim Smith was happy for his birthday, a fit fellow who is north of seventy, and the envy of this reporter who is just south of it. Jim Grieshop was happy for something that I missed.
Dr. Keith Watenpaugh was happy for a speech to the Redding Rotary Club. Gretchen Peralta was happy for the good work of Christmas elf Vanessa Errecarte. LTC Jay Brookman (ret) was happy for the completion of his teaching credential, as he launches his second career.
Dave Heard figured he would preempt a fine during the holidays and declared that he was happy for his new truck. And Don Winters was happy that Jim Grieshop signed off on his doctoral dissertation at Christmastime 1914.
So then, as a welcome for new members, there was a happy buck charged for new members, Meghan Likes, Steve Short, Mitch Mysliwiec, Nicky Grey–Rutamu and Irena Edmunson.
So then President Chuck Cunningham asked for members to tell us of Christmases away from home. Marc Thompson told of two successive Christmases spent in the Central African Republic with the Peace Corps. Jim Grieshop rang in with time in Ecuador and is now an RPCV (Recovering Peace Corps Volunteer), who would engage in throwing water balloons as a holiday celebrant. And Mack Walker, also an RPCV, was in Ecuador with the Peace Corps at Christmas. He explained that it was really San Juan Day, but the Catholic Church tagged along, and made Christmas the same day. One of the cultural cuisine items that he learned to ingest was fried junebugs. He said it tasted like chicken! Andrew Yang was in Singapore at Christmas. Andrew Yang spent a few Christmases in Singapore. And this reporter spent Christmas of 1990 in Singapore.
Apologies to others with stories of Christmas that I may have missed for the various table celebrations and general merriment that was enjoyed table by table. Great Christmas disorganization.
The draw of the day would have made Carolyn Stiver richer by $735 had she drawn the joker.
Wonderful merriment, and lots of Club fun. Thanks President Chuck, and the program committee.

President's Message for 2015President's Message for 2015
by Chuck Cunningham
Happy New Year!
As 2014 rolls into 2015, I’m reminded of some of the Club’s accomplishments so far this Rotary year. The highlight is the rousing success of Oktoberfest. More funds for our programs and great Club participation. 2015 will be even better! A few other noteworthy items, of many:
And, the cool thing about our new members is that six of them are women and the group definitely lowered the median age of the Club. Thank you Past Prez Susanne for setting the foundation for success this year.
What about 2015? Community Services Committee has a good list of potential projects, and I expect several opportunities for Club participation. New, energized leadership for Youth Services will actively engage with the Interact Clubs, and we will work with Rotaract on a mentoring program. Our scholarships for high school and adult school graduates pursing career technology will continue.
Just around the corner is the second Jay Gerber Young Community Leader award. And, International Committee will continue to find, evaluate and fund projects with community impact around the world.
I’m still optimistic about finding ways to further engage with kids and young adults at risk, perhaps in collaboration with other Clubs in our area.
What a great Rotary Club!
|
Who benefits from Davis Sunrise Rotary Club efforts?Thousands of local youth, seniors and others in need enjoy a better quality of life, thanks to the efforts of the Davis Sunrise Rotary Club.
Proceeds from our signature Oktoberfest fundraiser have benefited:
Our club is focused on helping youth, assisting children of migrant farm workers, foster boys and high school students seeking leadership skills and a vocational path.
Among our club youth projects are:
This year our club created a new award dedicated to recognizing younger contributors to the Davis community. This year’s inaugural recipient of the of the Jay Gerber Young Community Leader Award is Bill Habicht, associate pastor of the Davis Community Church, who was chosen for his commitment to social justice. The club gave Habitch $1,000 toward the future MOSAIC Tea and Coffee House that the associate pastor is organizing.
We also have long-time relationships a number of Yolo County programs connected to youth, and have donated hands-on help, soccer uniforms, landscaping, schools supplies and other gifts to:
In addition, Yolo County seniors are served through our weekly work for Meals on Wheels and our annual holiday gifts to the frail and elderly.
Our club is known for its interest in international service. Projects have included:

On a brisk, clear morning, the Rock called the Student of the Month meeting to order at 7:01. Café Italia was on time and most everyone already had their food. A great way to start SOM with such a large group.

Clay's CornerOn February 1st, Brooke and I attended the Rotary Club of Ione’s annual Crab Feed at the recently restored (by Rotary and other local service groups) Evalynn Bishop Hall in Howard Park just outside of Ione. We had a great time. We were invited by an old friend and immediate past-president of the Ione Club, Larry Costick. His small but mighty Ione Rotary Club (with just 27 members total) served (or sold as takeout) 1500 pounds or ¾ ton of crab to 425 attendees. Additional labor was supplied by an eager group of young Soroptomists from the local high school and the local Boy Scouts. With additional receipts from the silent auction, raffle and full bar, they raised between $8,000 and $9,000, not counting tips collected by the youth organizations.
To realize how amazing this event is for a small town Rotary Club, consider that in the 2010 census Ione had a population of 7,918 souls of which 4,160 folks were unable to attend due to their incarceration. So those 425 attendees represent more than 10% of the town’s population that is free to walk around.
At Larry’s invitation we stayed over until Super Bowl Sunday at his 33-acre ranch. Sunday morning before the game Larry gave us a tour of this Amador County part of the Mother Lode. Our tour included visits to 3 wineries for tasting, a look at the 33,000 acre Grant Ranch which Larry once managed for the Howard Family of Sea Biscuit fame, and a drive of the boyhood home of the late jazz pianist and composer Dave Brubeck . Brubeck’s father at that time was manager of the Grant Ranch. Then back to Larry’s to watch the Super Bowl and eat more delicious crab.

Clay's Corner The “Remembering Nelson Mandela” event at International House on January 24th hosted by our fellow Rotarian Nathalie Minya was a huge success. I have never seen that many people packed into the big room at I-House. Brooke and I joined- in, as did Keith Watenpaugh and family. We enjoyed African music and song, talks on Mandela and his Rainbow Nation (aka South Africa), and a ceremony honoring the elders among us, and a delicious African- themed Potluck. Keith honored me as an elder, which was nice, but just for the record I’d like to be considered a rather youngish-elder at this stage of my life.
After the kids went home or into the other room to watch children’s movie, about a third of the folks stayed to watch the movie SARAFINA with excellent South African cast and also featuring Whoopi Goldenberg in a supporting role. The movie was necessarily quite violent at times portraying the dark days of Apartheid. But the film begins and ends with an up-lifting message from the central character, Sarafina, a young, black South African women coming of age at a horrendous time in her country. Sarafina’s epiphany is “I will not let you make me hate you. I will not allow a desire for revenge to consume me.” Or in Nelson Mandela’s words “I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul.”
I have come to understand that Mandela’s power and effectiveness in transitioning a nation came in the end not from his ability to fight, but in his ability to forgive. The ability not to forget but to forgive unspeakable transgressions and to encourage a nation of one’s countrymen do the same is what in my eyes puts Mandela on a par with the great leaders of our country such as Washington and Lincoln. I’m glad I attended this event to honor this great man, and by his own admission not a saint, Nelson Mandela. |
New Member InductionNEW MEMBER INDUCTION, John Reed- sponsored by Mack Walker.
Says Mack,
"John is a retired Veterinarian (a UCD graduate no less) who has lived in Davis with his wife and two sons for over 40 years. He's an avid golfer, fisherman and wine maker so he should fit in quite well. He is looking for opportunities to participate in the community and help others and feels that Rotary is a great vehicle for such services.
I would also add that his wife, Joan, was a teacher at North Davis for many years. They have two sons, Brett and Garret and one spoiled dog, Rocky."

Clay's Corner Clay’s Corner is back by popular demand. OK, President Susanne put me up to it. BTW way Susanne’s Demotion Dinner has been set for the evening of Sunday, June 29, 2014, at International House. You won’t want to miss it or the pending spoof on social media featuring the funnier side of our President’s year.
Actually I’m glad to be back in this space. Me and Michelle Obama both have a birthday this Friday, July 17, 2014. Michelle will be 50. Yours truly will be 62. Michelle got an extended vacation in Hawaii. Let’s just say my birthday gift from the president has not arrived yet. I wish our First Lady all the best as she enters her 50’s. My New Year’s resolution at 50 was “To have more fun.” And I did, with the help of my Rotary pals, Larry’s Bike and Ski Club, my family, and once and while my work. In fact I was on a work trip in Humboldt County and doing a make-up at the Arcata Sunrise Rotary, when I came up with that resolution. I took first prize (a classy Rotary pin from their President) for having the best New Year’s resolution at that meeting 2002. Now at 62, on the threshold of Social Security, my New Year’s resolution is “To become more eccentric.” I know I have a long way to go to catch-up with my favorite senior Rotarians like Dick McCapes and Dick Berry, but those guys have a 20-year head start on me. I know that with due diligence, I’ll get there. Speaking fun, don’t forget to enhance your Rotary experience by visiting other Clubs and participating in their events, when you have the opportunity. Brooke and I are headed up to the Rotary Club of Ione’s Crab Feed on Saturday, February 1st. On display will be the recently remodeled Evalynn Bishop Hall, a cooperative project by Rotary, Native Sons, Ione Picnic Assn., Ione Business and Community Assn. and the Masons. According to my old friend and recent past-president Rotary president Larry Costick, “It was like a barn-raising, with 22 of us in there hammering and sawing.” Should be a fun time feeding on crab with friends old and new in the new old-Hall. |

President's ColumnA New Year’s thought about leadership and ideas: Some times you have a great idea that people leap on and sometimes your burst of creativity fizzles.
To use another, soggier, analogy: Ideas are like just-cooked spaghetti. Throw it against the wall and see what sticks… and what slides down to the garbage can. The goal is to keep on cooking that spaghetti.

The Holiday Season |
A Paul Harris MomentRotary's Power for World Peace
Rotary's Two Score and Two
It was a typical autumn in Chicago in 1946. There was a brisk, cold wind out of the northwest. The Chicago Cubs had just finished another unsuccessful season in the National League. And Leland Case asked Rotary International founder Paul P. Harris to write another article for the Rotarian, the typical, obligatory “It’s Anniversary time again, what’s in store for Rotary next year?” article.

22 November meeting
Dick Bourne
Between “Windy” (for the weather) and “Feelin’ Groovy”, Dave Morse #1’s magical fingers plinked out “Abraham Martin and John”- a reminder that on this day fifty years ago John F Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas. This was a day that most of our older members no doubt recall in vivid detail. It is a wistful time to reflect on how the world might be different absent that event (probably not much) and, on how in the world so many years have sped past.

Progress Ranch Update Boys at Progress Ranch, a group home in Davis, are now enjoying a play fort in their back yard, thanks to Davis Sunrise Rotary, the UC Davis chapter of Carpenters for Christ and other generous donations. The UC Davis volunteers traveled to Rocklin in mid-October to disassemble the donated play fort donated by the Jeffery Paylor family (formerly of Davis) and brought it to the Davis group home. There the carpenters reassembled the structure with the help from the Davis Sunrise Rotary.

President Susanne Rockwell called the Sunrise Rotary meeting to order promptly at 7:05 a.m. and with Dave Morse accompanying on the piano, the breakfast club burst (perhaps eked is a better verb) into song to open the meeting. Lots of visitors – mostly family members – at this meeting. Under announcements. Jay Brookman thanked everyone for their help on the Progress House project, Roy Kroener reminded all about Aggie football coming in a week – there is a sign-up sheet and we will buy a bloc of game tickets so we can sit together – and there will be a tailgating party at Roy’s home preceding the game. Clay Brandow presented President Susanne with a Rotary pin that actually says “President”.

The next weekend, nearly 20 Rotary members, with help from two sons of a Rotary member and a foster child, built a framed foundation and installed playground wood chips to keep the children safe. The fort, along with an accompanying swing set, are now being enjoyed by the boys.
Along with discounts from Hibbert Lumber and Davis Ace Hardware, Davis Sunrise Rotary paid for the playground foundation materials.

Each year our Rotary International President chooses a motto to reflect our organization. This year it is Engage Rotary. Change Lives. Our last meeting, a shame if you missed it, was a Club Assembly. “What is that?” you might ask. A Club Assembly is usually held twice a year and is focused at a review of where we are and where we might go. Simple, yet when our fellow Sunrise Rotarians get started, as it should be, anything is up for discussion!
