Bruce Wolk served as acting President.  It was Mack Walker’s turn, but he was in the hospital recovering from quadruple bypass surgery.  We all wish Mack the best. He is recovering well, but when he gets out of the hospital he may have to wait awhile to get back out on the golf course.
On April 20, Nancy Storm started the Student of the Month program with the standard introduction about the purpose of Rotary.  First up was Da Vinci High.  Scott Stephen Bell introduced Susan Kirby, who is the intern coordinator.  Susan honored Merlin, who is an AP Design Student.  Merlin completed an internship with Lorraine May Design Associates, and was also offered a job by Lorraine may Design Associates after the internship.  Merlin has a great positive attitude, and outstanding design skills.

Lauren Smith is a teacher at DaVinci and she introduced Sophie.  She praised Sophie for kindness, warmth and all-inconclusive attitude.  She cited an incident when Sophie saw a student crying in the hall, and Sophie devoted herself to calming the disturbed student.  Sophie Marie is a student leader at DaVinci.

Lauren Smith also introduced Adrianna (Audrey), who is a leader in Study Skills Class.  Audrey treats all peers with unparalleled kindness and the upmost empathy.  She is always productive, on-time and professional.  It is a great joy to have Audrey at DaVinci.

Second up was King High.  Michelle Flowers principal of  King High honored Elise, who is an outstanding student and builds friendships easily.  Elise loves to ride horses and she teaches others how to ride.

Following King High, was the Davis School for Independent Study (DSIS).  Marvie Paulsen, the Counselor for the DSIS, introduced Alex Furlow, who is a teacher at DSIS.  Alex presented Sam Ferrer, who was Alex’s first student.  Alex said Sam was a great student and that Sam, like Alex, loved science fiction.  Sam was in a little pain Friday morning because his brother’s cat had just bitten him.

Davis High School had the biggest show at Student of the Month.  Tom McHale, the principal at DHS and also a Club member, introduced Ty Brown and Cassandra Stone from the Resources Department.  They selected Gerald Boyd as Student of the Month.  Gerald has shown the ability to overcome obstacles and worked hard to become the best student he can be.  Gerald has been a joy to work with.

Lynette Diem, teacher in the art department, spoke about Molly Dunning.  Molly is a dream art student.  She is focused on the creative process and delights in getting her hands sticky in clay.  When Molly becomes immersed in her art projects, she tunes out all distractions and seems to experience real joy in her discoveries.    Molly has come into her own this year working on large and imaginative pieces.

Christian Iturralde, math teacher at DHS, honored Sylvia Ponce.  Sylvia has outstanding leadership in the classroom.  She strives to become a veterinarian in the future.   She wants to become a vet and earn money to buy her parents a house.  Then her own house will come later.

Peter Reilly, Social Studies teacher, singled out Lauren Giovannetti as an exceptional student.  She is always positive in Peter’s American Government class, and is always willing to help her peers gain an understanding of the issues.  Lauren is prepared and thoughtful, and most important curious about how a person may make an impact on the political process.

After Student of the Month, the Acting President asked for announcements.  Bob Poppenga asked for volunteers to work at the Beer Concession patio improvements at the Fair Grounds on April 21 and 22.  Meaghan Likes reported that Ribs and Rotary would by May 19 from 4:30 to 7:30 at Central Park.  Gretchen Peralta announced that Wine Pourers were needed at the State Fair for the evening hours on July 28 and 29.  The deal is that if you volunteer, you can drink as much wine as you want and you may get some free bottles to take home as well.

Sydney Vergis was the Sargent for the day.  Irena Asmundson offered Happy Bucks because she gets to talk about pot all day every day related to her work analyzing economic impact reports for new marijuana operations.  Don Winters gave $100 to the Foundation for his 69th birthday.  Tim Deleiden gave happy bucks because his company Recology had taken over the Davis Waste Removal business of collecting garbage in Davis.  Carolyn Stiver gave thanks for her 8th wedding anniversary, and Meaghan Likes gave happy bucks for completing her 11th tax season.  Art Knutson of AGR, thanked the club with $100 for helping him find space and an assistant when he moved his company to Davis.

Sydney didn’t do her homework, and consequently there were few fines.  Poor Nancy Storm had to fine herself.  Dan Carson got fined for being endorsed by the Bee.  (A Bee Sting. Ha! Ha! Ha!).  Manny Carbahal got fined for being in the paper related to preparing tax returns.
