SPEAKERS

Dennis Lindsay announced our speakers from Thriving Pink, a Davis based non-profit for anyone who is at risk of, going through, or has a family member going through treatment for breast cancer.  Thriving Pink offers many programs.

Joni Rubin, herself a 14-year cancer survivor, is the director of Thriving Pink.  Denise Rose is a fellow board member and also a breast cancer survivor.  See www.ThrivingPink.org for more information.  One in 8 women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer over the course of their lifetime.  Men can also get breast cancer.  There are 3.8 million breast cancer survivors in the U.S. currently.

Denise advises: “Use your eyes”.  Some types of cancer are harder to detect with a mammogram.  Denise noticed a change in her tissue and called it to her doctor’s attention.  After a needle biopsy, she was given her diagnoses and successful treatment.

Granting Pink is an individual grant program.  Denise leads this program of giving financial grants to Yolo County residents.  Last year Thriving Pink through Granting Pink provided $65k in grants that could be used for just about anything they need.  One recipient received a grant to get her car fixed so that she could continue getting to her appointments for treatment.  Demonstrating a direct need and being a current breast cancer patient are all the requirements to be considered for a monetary gift.

Mentoring Pink - provides other core services.  Each recipient gets a comfort bag which includes a beautifully embroidered heart and activities to do while they are going through chemo treatments and may include handmade cards.  The bags are given to the hospitals who then make the decision as to which patients receive a bag.

Pink Peers are women who have gone through treatment and are willing to visit and share with new and current patients as they start their journey.

Monthly Walks take place to enhance awareness of the organization and also to share and socialize with other survivors and current patients.

Educational workshops are conducted with medical professionals to share knowledge about treatment and this disease.

Renewal retreat - Once a year they have about a dozen women come together to create bonds with other individuals on the same road and have some down time in a supportive environment. Support groups have been funded and will be offered in the coming months.

Partnering Pink is a Thriving Pink program that promotes awareness.  They get the word out to assure that people are aware of this valuable resource.  In October they will visit 150 businesses in Davis.  Most of whom agreed to put the window cling for Thriving Pink in their windows to help promote awareness.

Fundraising includes the annual May Gala where grant recipients are recognized and gratitude is extended to the community for their support.  Also, Pinktober is the major push to raise funds for the program.  A core tenant is “What’s raised here, stays here.”  Funds raised by these events are used exclusively in Yolo County.

Thriving Pink is opening a new office on 2nd Street in Davis that will include a community room, a library, and a gathering space for events and workshops.  They will be increasing outreach and programs for the Spanish-speaking community as well. They are also providing programs for Youth both in Education and Support.

Please join Thriving Pink by spreading the word, helping to volunteer and if possible, giving financial resources to help support their programs.

QUESTIONS:

Brodie Hamilton asks if they have a Venmo account.  Not currently, but they have a Donate button on their website.    Lori Raneri asked about a woman named Anne Marie.  She sadly did not survive her cancer but carried through a legacy of positivity and positivity bracelets are included in every comfort bag in her memory and honor.  Vanessa Errecarte mentioned that she has two friends who are young and currently fighting breast cancer of the type which could not be diagnosed through a mammogram.  She is wondering about perhaps other types of tests and ways of diagnosing through MRI or digital mammograms.  Joni and Denise recommended advocating for yourself and having open conversations with your doctor about any changes you see.  Also, keep a close eye on your lifestyle as stress and diet can also be factors for this disease.

President Meaghan shared that her mom had not had a mammogram for 3 years and was diagnosed last year with breast cancer.

Many thanks to these lovely women for the important work they are doing for the community.

Next week we will have Student of the Month IN PERSON!!!

Please come and support OCTOBERFEST!

$831 in the draw of the day pot this week.  Ella Erracarte draws a ticket which belongs to Gretchen!  Free Breakfast!

Rose Cholewinski provided the quote of the week: “Make good choices, strive for excellence, make a difference, count your blessings.”  Excellent advice, Rose!

That’s it for this reporter.

Good night, and good luck.
